Hiiii everyone.
So you may have noticed that I haven't been updating very much this month (aside from The Ice Plague, which was already written, I haven't actually put out a chapter since around the 12th of June).
That's because on the 13th, Glen's Dad passed away from Dementia with Lewy Bodies (DLB), and then on the 14th I got some bad health news (we don't know exactly what kind of bad yet, but the one thing we do know is that I have copper toxicity (a kind of heavy metal poisoning) and we have no idea why, so after an abdominal ultrasound next week, I'll need to see a liver specialist).
Initially I thought I'd be fine to keep writing (I often write to cope with life stuff), I have kind of gone the other way and only finished an FFS chapter yesterday and was too tired to edit it or do anything today. So there's a chance I won't make my 25k minimum monthly wordcount this month, and I'm going to struggle to get out the chapter commentaries for Patreon (though I will do it *clenches fist*).
Glen and I are holding up about as well as anyone can expect and if anything significant changes with my health I'll let folks know! I'm just...slow at writing and I don't think now is the time to put a lot of pressure on myself. So thanks for everyone's patience! The Ice Plague will keep its schedule because that's all written, it's just everything else that's slowwwwww.

Health: Misconceptions with Anemia and "Iron Deficiency"
Iron Absorption & Utilization
Simply taking iron supplements often doesn't cure anemia.
Proper absorption and utilization of iron involve many processes.
1/3 of the population has trouble absorbing and utilizing iron; it's considered the most common nutritional disorder in the world.
Anemia is usually about iron dysregulation, not deficiency.
Iron supplements or injections tend to circulate excessively, potentially causing toxicity.
Iron overload strains the iron recycling system and the liver.
Liver plays a key role in regulating iron uptake.
Iron doesn't regulate itself; it's copper-dependent.
Copper is essential for ceruloplasmin, a protein that mobilizes iron from tissues into the blood. Without copper, iron accumulates in tissue leading to inflammation and tissue damage which can develop into others issues like heart or liver disease and diabetes with increased risk of infection and cancer.
Retinol (Vitamin A) enhances iron absorption and influences genes regulating iron metabolism.
Iron Testing
CBC can detect anemia but it can't necessarily tell you the cause.
Serum ferritin doesn't give a true measure of iron stores.
Approximately 70% of iron is found in hemoglobin, around 20-25% is stored as ferritin and hemosiderin in tissues, about 5% is in myoglobin and enzymes, and roughly 0.1% as serum iron.
For accurate assessment, consider all containers of iron including hemoglobin, serum iron, and ferritin, as well as non-iron markers such as zinc, copper, and vitamins A & D.
The only direct way to measure iron stores is to keep removing blood until anemia sets in, then account for the iron deficit and dietary iron consumed during this time.
Sources (meat, liver, and seafood)
Copper: liver, nuts, molasses, oats, bee pollen, shellfish, pumpkin seeds, dark chocolate, acerola cherry powder, shilajit.
Retinol (Vitamin A): liver, other organ meats, egg yolk, seafood, fish liver oils, dairy products.
Other Insights
Phytates in plants can hinder non-heme iron absorption but vitamin C helps to counteract these inhibitory effects.
Over-supplementing with zinc can cause copper deficiency since copper and zinc need to be in balance.
There are many causes of anemia beyond "iron deficiency", such as vitamin B12 deficiency.
The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine was awarded in 1934 to George Whipple, George Minot, and William Murphy for their discoveries related to liver therapy in cases of anemia.
Other studies have supported incorporating beef liver (which contains copper, iron, zinc, vitamin A and D) into the diet.
The key is to have food that isn't concentrated on a certain vitamin or mineral but provides a mixture of what we need in a way that our body can properly absorb without inhibiting effects.
Men are naturally higher in iron than women and women are naturally higher in copper than men (estrogen levels contribute to the production of copper).
Female menstruation is why iron deficiency anemia is more common among women.
Signs of anemia include fatigue, pale complexion, blurred vision, dizziness, irregular heartbeat, cold hands and feet, scanty menstruation, numbness, insomnia, poor memory, dry skin, brittle nails, vertical ridges on nails, muscle twitches, shortness of breath, chest pain, headache, swollen or sore tongue, unusual cravings, restless legs.

sorry if you've been asked this before, but what are some doberman breeders you personally trust? ive been saving up for years to get my own puppy, and i have already done research on a lot of breeders myself, but i would love your input too. if it matters at all, im looking for a pet, not a show dog, though i will be doing a lot of training :3
I don't do breeder recs because literally every time I do them- or even get this question- I get a frankly stupid amount of ridiculous drama and I'm very done with it at this point.
What I will recommend is doing your own research and making sure to buy from a breeder who is doing the following:
Fully health testing their breeding dogs. Embark! Is not! Enough! The dogs need to have their hips and elbows (shoulders preferred not required), eyes, kidneys livers and thyroids, and also most importantly have their hearts holtored and echo'd, as well as genetic tests for DINGS, vWD, and the DCM markers. ALL of these should be done, but the most important is truly the heart testing. If the heart testing is missing, I would 100% pass on that breeder. Over 50% of the breed dies from cardio problems with the majority of those deaths being DCM-related. There is no cure and no preventative or predictive method for ridding the breed of DCM, but it also causes sudden death, so doberman breeders NEED to be doing the best they can to make sure they are keeping on top of their dogs' heart health.
Some sort of breed-specific temperament testing. In dobermans there are several- the WAE, the ATT, the breed survey, some form of bitesport, some form of police/military/border patrol testing, etc. Remember that the doberman was created to be and always has been a breed for biting. "They are therapy dogs" is not breed-specific temperament testing. "They are good companions" is not breed-specific temperament testing. The breed is intended to bite. If you want a doberman, you want a dog that bites.
This requires a little pedigree knowledge, but personally I think it behooves everyone to look for breeders who are prioritizing pedigrees with higher -than-average lifespans (10+; average in the breed is 7.5 years) and who are prioritizing pairings that produce less than 30% COI. I also think you should see for yourself what the reported COD is for the dogs who have passed- any that seem very odd should be thought of as a DCM death (you wouldn't believe how many dogs in Russia are supposedly hit by lightning right at 5 years old...). Breeders that do necropsies on any dogs that die suddenly with no other explination (because otherwise it needs to count as a DCM death as that's DCM's calling card). And breeders that participate in projects related to genetic diversity and heart health.
Similarly this is less dog ethics and more human ethics but I think it is very important in this breed to make sure you are not buying from an obvious bigot. There are a lot, and I mean a LOT, of nazis and racists and klan members in this breed. This is not an exaggeration or hyperbole. There are literal nazis in this breed. There are literal klan members in this breed. There are a lot of QAnon people and Trumpers who support them. And there are a lot of homophobes, transphobes, racists, antisemites, islamophobes, xenophobes, and misogynists in this breed. There is a guy who labels himself a wonderful family-oriented breeder who is a convicted pedophile. No, seriously, the case is public record and he was charged with the kidnapping and assault of a minor while he was in his mid-20s. You need to be careful, and you need to not just trust what people tell you about themselves.

Matcha Health Science: An Evidence-Based Review
Tumblr media
Recently I found a fantastic tea company called Tezumi that obtains teas from all over the world, namely Japan. I got to talking with the owner and he invited me to write a post for their blog about the scientific publications that have been done regarding matcha's health benefits. I thought you all would enjoy it too! Link.
A gurgling, clear stream from a boiling kettle tumbles into a vessel holding dried plant matter. A frenetic symphony of swirling H2O molecules draws out a host of larger, more complex molecules: catechins, epicatechin, gallocatechin, L-theanine, caffeine, and more. The steaming water, now steeped with a plant’s essence, is strained into a clean empty cup. For thousands of years this was the universal chemical process for the creation of tea. It is called infusion.
Black tea, oolong tea, white tea, and green tea are all brewed via an infusion process. However, there is a curious exception within the world of tea: matcha. While all other teas are extracts infused into warm water, matcha is a suspension. The powdered green tea is suspended, floating within the water, and then whisked into a thick solution with a light foamy topping.
How did this unique beverage come to be?
The story goes that a particularly brutal Japanese winter hundreds of years ago inspired farmers to cover their tea plants with straw to shield them from the damaging frost. The plants, in response to the shade created by this covering, synthesized more chlorophyll to maintain energy metabolism. The farmers then discovered that these new, darkly pigmented plants made for an even more robust and rich brew of green tea.
When a traveling monk named Eisai returned to Japan after traveling in China, he supposedly introduced a powdered suspension method for tea brewing. Combining one tea innovation with another, the result is supposedly the matcha we know today.
While there are various health benefits attributed to all kinds of teas, matcha enjoys a superior status because it is a suspension rather than an infusion. A simple online search yields a bevy of claims from preventing disease to curing cancer. But what does our most rigorous, evidence-based scientific research tell us about the true benefits of matcha?
Obesity and Metabolic Syndrome Benefits
Studies in both mice and humans have given evidence for several benefits matcha may provide regarding obesity and appropriate weight loss.
A Chinese study by Wang Et al.1 created an experiment in which they divided mice into four groups. Two groups were given either a high-fat or normal diet while another two groups were given matcha supplementation along with either a high-fat or normal diet. A number of different variables were then analyzed before and after the 8-week experiment, including blood lipid levels, blood glucose levels, liver enzymes, fat and liver cell samples viewed under a microscope, gut microbiota, fecal bile acids, and more.
When comparing the high fat diet with the high fat plus matcha diet, the study found that matcha supplementation inhibited the fat accumulation and limited the dyslipidemia and hyperglycemia caused by the high fat diet. Additionally, matcha reshaped the intestinal microbiome by promoting bacterial strains associated with healthy body weight, reducing glucose and increasing insulin levels, and reducing inflammation. There have been other well-designed studies with similar findings in humans as well.2,3
Put simply, there have been repeated experiments with findings that suggest matcha intake may benefit prevention and reversal of obesity as well as the serologic, microbiotic, and histologic markers associated with metabolic syndrome. And for those who may not be aware, metabolic syndrome significantly increases risk for heart attack, stroke, and diabetes.
Cognitive and Systemic benefits
A South Korean study examined the effect of matcha on cognitive dysfunction and systemic inflammation in mice.4 The authors stated, “Air pollution is a complex mixture of particulate matter that contains heavy metals, carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and ozone, and is known to be harmful to human health.” They further explain that the pollution “is absorbed through a variety of pathways, such as skin, nasal cavity, respiratory organs, and digestive system, and causes type 2 diabetes, respiratory infections, cardiovascular disease, and systemic inflammation.” This in turn also creates oxidative stress in the brain, leading to cognitive impairment.
Few studies have examined the way matcha may impact individuals exposed to pollution, especially with respect to the effects on cognition. The authors set out to answer these questions by designing a sophisticated experiment with mice. Essentially, they were exposed to high levels of pollution and one group received matcha extract while the other did not.
The results were extensive. To summarize: matcha inhibited cognitive dysfunction caused by the neurotoxic effects of pollution, downregulated systemic inflammation, reduced behavioral and memory dysfunction, promoted lung, skin, and brain anti-oxidation, improved regulation of mitochondrial function, and benefited several cholinergic and anticholinergic systems.
Several other studies in humans have found similarly encouraging results with respect to the impact of matcha on overall brain health.5 Some have even found results that suggest green tea may reduce the risk for developing Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia.6
A systematic review7 of matcha’s health benefits created the following diagram to summarize:
Tumblr media
Takeaways
Whether improving cognitive performance, protecting important organ systems, or reducing the likelihood of developing metabolic syndrome, matcha has effects on the human body that are as complex as its own storied history. The ongoing study of this traditional beverage will continue to shine light on its potential benefits.
While the evidence does suggest that matcha may benefit several conditions, there can be too much of a good thing. Drinking matcha in excess can lead to nausea, vomiting, acid reflux, and may worsen symptoms for anyone with stomach ulcers. Furthermore, there is no evidence to suggest that matcha may treat health conditions in the absence of our current medical standards of care.
My advice? A cup or two of matcha tea per day is a reliable lifestyle addition for experiencing the relaxed focus effect of combination caffeine and L-theanine. And in doing so, you can enjoy the added satisfaction of knowing you are likely benefiting your brain, metabolism, and intestinal microbiome.

What to Do if You’re Skinny Fat
Maybe this describes you. You’ve got skinny arms, skinny legs, hardly any pecs . . . and a belly. It might not be a big belly, but it’s a soft, doughy paunch nonetheless.  You look kinda skinny, but also kinda fat.  You’re skinny fat.  What Is Skinny Fat? Skinny fat dudes have a normal body mass index (BMI). But, as has often been observed, BMI doesn’t tell the whole story. BMI doesn’t differentiate between muscle mass and body fat. So if a guy has low muscle mass combined with average-to-slightly-above-average amounts of fat, their BMI will be reported as normal. Skinny fat guys are walking around thinking they’re healthy. Nonetheless, as we’ll see here in a bit, a skinny fat person might have all the health issues typical of the obese. The underlying issue of skinny fat dudes is that they lack substantial muscle mass AND have average amounts of fat (which, in men, gathers primarily around the waist).  The Biggest Problem With Being Skinny Fat The biggest problem with being skinny fat is that it can deceive you that you’re perfectly healthy when you’re actually not.  A skinny fat person has a low muscle-to-fat ratio, and muscle helps your metabolic health by doing things like clearing glucose from the blood. So if you’re skinny fat, you may not look fat, but you likely have all the same health issues an obese person would have, like type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol. This is why obesity researchers often call skinny fat “normal weight obesity”; a skinny fat person has a normal weight and BMI, but when you look at other markers of obesity like insulin and blood pressure, they’re essentially obese.  What can make being skinny fat even more of a health hazard is that the fat that a skinny fat guy accumulates is often visceral fat. Visceral fat is a fat that lies deep in the body and grows primarily around our internal organs like the liver, colon, and pancreas. Visceral fat makes and releases proteins that inflame your body and constrict blood vessels, contributing to maladies like diabetes and cardiovascular disease. So visceral fat is no bueno.  So your health is the biggest issue with being skinny fat. But it’s also just not a great look.  You’ve got chicken legs and scrawny arms with a belly to boot. When you wear a t-shirt, your arms don’t fill out the sleeves, but you’ve also got a pooch showing through your midsection.  Doesn’t inspire thumos.  How to Stop Being Skinny Fat When most guys try to stop being skinny fat, they work on not being fat first. They’ll reduce calories and do lots and lots of cardio.  But this will just make you skinny. Remember, skinny fat is caused by a lack of muscle mass combined with average-to-slightly-above-average body fat.  Instead of focusing on being less fat, focus on being less skinny by increasing your muscle mass.  How do you increase your muscle mass? Two ways: 1) strength training, and 2) nutrition. Strength Training If you want to stop being skinny fat, you’ve got to strength train consistently for months. Compound barbell lifts like the squat, bench press, shoulder press, and deadlift will give you the most bang for your buck when it comes to strength and muscle gains.  If barbell training isn’t your thing, you’ve got other options. Bodyweight exercises, dumbbell routines, and resistance bands all provide muscle-boosting benefits.  Strength training works, but you have to do it consistently for a long time. Don’t expect to see a drastic decline in your skinny fatness in just a few weeks of strength training. Expect it to take a few months. It seems like a lot of guys who are trying not to be skinny fat give up on their training after just a few weeks. Don’t do this! Keep going. Be consistent, and the results will come. As you increase your muscle mass through strength training, you’ll create a virtuous cycle that will allow you to increase muscle mass while reducing body fat at the same time. As you increase muscle mass through strength training, you’ll burn more… http://dlvr.it/SxvG3q

Anxiety and stress have frequently been linked with vulnerability to illness. Numerous long-term studies have found that people who experience pronounced feelings of tension or anxiety are substantially more likely to develop coronary artery disease, or die from it, over the following years.
For example, an American study which tracked several hundred people over a twelve-year period found that individuals who exhibited high levels of psychological distress were roughly twice as likely to die as those with only average levels of distress. This connection between distress and death held up even when other medical risk factors such as old age, obesity, smoking, high blood cholesterol and high blood pressure were taken into account, so it was not merely a question of distressed subjects also being old, fat or smokers. Psychological distress was related to subsequent mortality in its own right.
Similar conclusions emerged from a Harvard University project. This investigated the health of former Harvard students whose psychological and biological profiles had been assessed thirty-five years earlier, as part of a series of laboratory experiments on stress. The way subjects reacted during the laboratory tests predicted their physical health years later. Individuals who displayed signs of severe anxiety during the original stress tests subsequently suffered from significantly more physical illnesses, including coronary heart disease, over the following decades. Responding anxiously to a stressful situation when a young adult proved to be a reliable marker for ill-health of all types in middle age. Another investigation by scientists at Harvard Medical School found that very shy children, who suffered from severe anxiety when in social situations, were more prone to allergic disorders such as hay fever.
It may help to look in greater detail at one specific example of a fairly subtle connection between psychological factors and subsequent disease. An American research project conducted in the 1970s investigated the psychological characteristics associated with infectious mononucleosis, otherwise known as glandular fever. This unpleasant and debilitating disease is prevalent among teenagers and young adults. The symptoms include a general malaise, fever, sore throat, loss of appetite, headaches, together with swelling of the lymph nodes or ‘glands’ in the neck, groin and armpits. Recovery can take many weeks.
Occasionally, serious complications arise, such as damage to the liver or spleen. The disease is caused by a type of herpes virus known as the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), which we encountered in chapter 1 as a once-favoured cause for chronic fatigue syndrome. In common with other herpes viruses like herpes simplex (which causes cold sores and genital herpes), EBV can remain dormant in the body for years without causing any symptoms. Dormant viruses are normally held in check by the individual’s immune system, but anything that weakens immunological control over the latent viruses can trigger the emergence of disease symptoms.
The subjects of this investigation comprised over 1300 young men entering the West Point military academy. On arrival at West Point each student was screened to see whether he was already infected with EBV. About two-thirds of the students carried the virus, which is typical for a normal population. The remaining third had not yet been infected. These potentially susceptible students were then tracked to see who would become infected with EBV.
And here lies an important general point: not everyone who is exposed to disease-causing bacteria or viruses becomes infected. In fact, only about one in five of the originally virus-free students went on to be infected with EBV during their four years at West Point. Of those who did become infected, a quarter developed obvious clinical symptoms of disease. And here lies a second general point: not everyone who gets infected with disease-causing viruses or bacteria develops a clinical disease.
Psychological assessments revealed that those men who went on to be afflicted with infectious mononucleosis shared certain distinctive psychological characteristics. In particular, they tended to be the ones who had suffered most from academic pressure. Students who had the dispiriting combination of a strong motivation to do well, but a poor actual performance, had a greater likelihood of contracting infectious mononucleosis. And once they became ill these highly motivated but poorly performing students spent longer on average in hospital. They were more susceptible to the disease and when they got it, they got it worse. Relatively minor traumatic events can also push up the odds of becoming ill. For example, Australian scientists found a marked increase in high blood pressure, gut disorders and diabetes among people who had been indirectly affected by a bushfire that occurred in southern Australia in 1983.

I'll stare directly at the sun, but never in the mirror.
firstly, I want to thank everyone who sent me messages checking in and wishing me well. I’ve had no energy to check in.  secondly, I want to thank the person who sent me a gift from my amazon wishlist? like how did you find it? I posted that link a lifetime ago, so thank you so much it made my day so much better.
So just a small update on me and where I’ve been. I’ve been lurking but not really here.  I am exhausted, my heath is failing me, badly and I’m just really tired all the damn time. I’m focusing my energies on small things. I’m so grateful for all my wonderful friends for being so patient with me.
So it turns out I don’t just have arthritis in my hands and my feet as I originally thought, its in my spine basically as well and my shoulders and hips are starting to go too.
I’m also having more testing done for other things because other markers in my blood and scans are showing other things.  my liver and kidneys aren’t coping well with everything thats wrong and on top of that we are having an La Niña which means it will not stop raining which triggers my migraines and my arthritis (I cannot catch a break).   So I spend pretty much all my free time sleeping, the rest of my time is spent at doctors appointments and work.
As dramatic as this sounds I promise I’m not dying, I’m just struggling.  I am hoping to end the year with no WIP and my health some what more stable.
I have big plans for 2023 and I would like the energy to execute them.
and I miss y’all so much.

Reading And Interpreting Your Liver Function Test - A Guide To Commonly Used Liver Tests
Tumblr media
The liver is a vital organ responsible for numerous metabolic functions in the body, including detoxification, protein synthesis, and bile production. Monitoring liver health is crucial for early detection and management of liver diseases. One of the primary tools for assessing liver function is the Liver Function Test (LFT). In this guide, we will delve into the commonly used liver tests, how to interpret the results, and what they indicate about your liver health.
Understanding Liver Function Tests
Liver Function Tests (LFTs) are a group of blood tests that provide valuable insights into the health and function of the liver. These tests measure various enzymes, proteins, and substances in the blood that are indicative of liver health.
Key components of Liver Function Tests
Alanine Aminotransferase (ALT): Elevated levels suggest liver damage, commonly caused by conditions like hepatitis or fatty liver disease.
Aspartate Aminotransferase (AST): Similar to ALT, elevated AST levels indicate liver damage but may also be elevated in conditions affecting the heart or muscles.
Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP): Elevated ALP levels may suggest liver or bone disease.
Total Bilirubin: Increased levels may indicate liver dysfunction or obstruction of bile ducts.
Albumin and Total Protein: These are measures of liver synthetic function; decreased levels may suggest liver disease.
What are the causes of abnormal liver function test results?
Causes of abnormal liver function test results can vary and may indicate different underlying conditions. Some common causes include:
1. Build-up of Fat in the Liver:
* Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) can lead to abnormal liver function tests, especially in overweight or obese individuals.
2. Liver Inflammation and Damage:
* Infections, toxic substances like alcohol or certain medications, and immune conditions can cause liver inflammation and subsequent abnormal test results.
3. Liver Overworking:
* When the liver is under stress from processing medicines or toxic substances like alcohol or paracetamol, it can result in abnormal liver function tests.
4. Bile Duct Blockage:
* Blockages in the bile ducts, such as by gallstones, can lead to abnormal liver function test results.
5. Liver Conditions and Diseases:
* Underlying conditions like Wilson's disease, haemochromatosis, or Gilbert's syndrome can affect liver function and result in abnormal test values.
6. Liver Injury:
* Physical injury to the liver, trauma, or presence of abscesses or tumors within the liver can cause abnormal liver function tests.
7. Medications and Supplements:
* Certain medications, over-the-counter drugs, herbal remedies, and traditional medicines can also impact liver function test results.
8. Other Factors:
* Factors like high alcohol intake, viral infections, autoimmune conditions, metabolic liver diseases, heart problems, and tumors in the liver can contribute to abnormal liver function tests.

Higher body temperature is associated with stronger immune system, lower inflammation, fertility, good thyroid function, faster digestive transit time and more efficient elimination of toxins through the liver.
Lower body temperature is associated with obesity, inflammation, being more susceptible to pathogens, digestive issues, estrogen dominance, hypothyroidism and high stress to name a few. Anywhere below 97.4f … but ESPECIALLY below 97.0f) this can be a sign that you are struggling with sluggish thyroid or even subclinical hypothyroid.
Lowering temperature is a mechanism used to CONSERVE ENERGY. Have cold feet and hands all the time? Chills constantly? You may have a lower core temperature. When our basal body temps are consistently low, there is metabolic stress on the body in some form!
*temperature can just be one sign something is off, if you believe something is abnormal look to see what other symptoms you may have and track your temp for at least three cycles to see a pattern*
A strong BT to aim for is around 97.8f (36.5C) upon waking and slowly and gradually increase after every meal and over the course of the day reaching 98.6 or a bit above (during your luteal phase). Keep in mind that running off of stress hormones burns calories too (through the inefficient process of glycolysis- breaking down our own tissue just to make enough energy to survive) and CAN keep body heat higher, even when metabolism is struggling. This is why looking at all metabolic markers as a whole is so important. If body temp drops after meals, this can mean our food is actively lowering our stress. (which is good, but we want to get to a point where chronic stress is low enough that our meals increase metabolic function and heat).
Oral temperature is best for measuring core body temperature, but oral + armpit gives us even more data.
Ladies, you want to see your temperature sitting around 97.8f+ during your luteal phase! After ovulation you generally see a spike 0.6-1.0 degrees in your temperature, which is the tracking method utilized to see if you ovulated or not! Temping is not just for fertility but good to see your overall cycle health!

There are multiple risk factors for the development of osteoporosis. These include but are not limited to advanced age, cigarette smoking, chronic glucocorticoid therapy, low body weight, previous fractures, history of rheumatoid arthritis, and excessive alcohol intake.
Antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) are associated with adverse effects on bone health. The AEDs most commonly associated with altered bone metabolism are those that induce the cytochrome P450 enzyme system. Specifically, the AED phenytoin has a direct inhibitory effect on intestinal calcium absorption and can stimulate osteoclastic bone resorption.
A score of less than -2.5 on DEXA scanning would indicate osteoporosis, a score of -1.0 to -2.5 would indicate osteopenia, and a score greater than -1.0 indicates normal bone density. Additionally, a fragility fracture (fracture from minor trauma such as a fall from a standing height or less) is diagnostic of osteoporosis without any further workup.
Bottom Line: The risk factors for osteoporosis include advanced age, cigarette smoking, chronic glucocorticoid therapy, physical inactivity, poor intake of calcium and vitamin D, body weight less than 127 lb, previous fractures, anticonvulsant use, hyperthyroidism, celiac disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and excessive alcohol intake.
The characteristic need for the child to use his hands to push himself to an upright position when arising from the floor is the Gower sign. It results from weakness in the proximal lower extremity muscles. Physical examination reveals pseudohypertrophy of the calf, lumbar lordosis, a waddling gait, shortening of the Achilles tendons, hypotonia, and hyporeflexia or areflexia. Patients usually use wheelchairs by age 12 or 13. Additional complications include delayed growth, dilated cardiomyopathy, increased fractures, progressive scoliosis with impaired pulmonary function, cognitive impairment, and eventual respiratory insufficiency.
Bottom Line: Elevated laboratory markers in the setting of Duchenne muscular dystrophy include serum creatine kinase, aspartate aminotransferase, and alanine transaminase.
COMBANK Insight: DMD is a progressive, myopathic disorder inherited in an X-linked, recessive fashion and caused by a defective gene on the X chromosome responsible for dystrophin production. Dystrophin normally serves to stabilize and prevent the breakdown of muscle fibers. Loss of dystrophin thus leads to muscle fiber degeneration, resulting in muscle weakness.
Wilson Disease, also known as hepatolenticular degeneration, is an autosomal recessive defect involving an ATPase, Cu2+ -transporting, β-polypeptide. In this disease state, copper is deposited in tissues of the brain, liver, kidneys, and Descemet membrane of the cornea (known as Kayser-Fleischer rings, which are seen in the exhibit). Parkinsonian-like tremor and dementia may be evident when the nervous system is affected. Renal tubular damage occurs in the kidneys and cirrhosis can develop in the liver. Diagnosis can be made with the observation of decreased serum ceruloplasmin. Treatment includes penicillamine, which creates a soluble complex with the metal that can be excreted through the urine.
Bottom Line: A Kayser-Fleischer ring is a golden brown ring observed in the Descemet layer of the cornea as a result of copper deposition and is seen in Wilson disease. Labs reveal low serum ceruloplasmin and treatment with penicillamine can stop the progression of this degenerative disease state.
The types of cancers that metastasize to the bone most commonly are lung, breast, thyroid, renal, and prostate. Multiple myeloma and lymphoma can both form lytic lesions from their origins within the marrow.
A SPEP and UPEP are sensitive for multiple myeloma and should be obtained along with a measurement of the patient's total protein and globulin levels.
Bottom Line: The initial workup of a new lytic lesion generally involves a CT chest/abdomen/pelvis, SPEP/UPEP, bone scan, basic labs, and mammogram or PSA

My bad for misunderstanding, and sorry if my ask sounded rude. From what I saw heart exams alone cost about €40, didn’t check prices for X-rays or bloodwork tho. The hereditary testing was for DCM1, DCM2, DM, OA and VWD1.
Heart exam or 24-48 hour holter? A vet listening to the heart with a stethoscope is not health testing. Strapping a holter to the dog and getting a readout of what the dog's heart does at rest and when active is a much better indicator, but it is significantly more expensive. I would be surprised if a holter only cost 40 euros, which would be roughly 42 USD. Holters here cost about 400 each time you do it and they must be done at minimum yearly. Then you have ekgs, bloodwork for thyroid kidney and liver, xrays of the hips and elbows, an eye exam, AND the genetic testing for vwd, dm, and the two dcm markers... that's not going to be cheap.

Adagrasib Sensitizes Polyhematoporphyrin-Mediated Photodynamic Treatment inside Cholangiocarcinoma through Focusing on xCT
Although Any. baumannii is considered as among the more threatening "superbugs'' for the health-related technique, minor is understood concerning the factors adding to their pathogenesis. In this function we all show that A. baumannii ATCC 17978 has the O-glycosylation system responsible for your glycosylation regarding multiple meats. 2D-DIGE and also bulk spectrometry methods discovered several Any Fluorouracil inhibitor . baumannii glycoproteins, regarding but unfamiliar operate. The actual glycan structure was resolute utilizing a mix of Microsoft and also NMR tactics along with consists of a branched pentasaccharide containing N-acetylgalactosamine, sugar, galactose, N-acetylglucosamine, plus a kind regarding glucuronic chemical p. A glycosylation bad tension ended up being produced simply by homologous recombination. This particular stress would not present virtually any growth flaws, yet displayed the greatly diminished ability to create biofilms. Dysfunction with the glycosylation machines additionally led to diminished virulence by 50 percent contamination types, your amoebae Dictyostelium discoideum and the caterpillar with the insect Galleria mellonella, and lowered in vivo health and fitness in a computer mouse button model of peritoneal sepsis. Despite A. baumannii genome plasticity, the actual O-glycosylation machinery is apparently seen in just about all clinical isolates analyzed along with each of the genomes sequenced. This suggests the existence of a solid transformative strain in order to retain this technique. These types of outcomes jointly reveal which O-glycosylation in the. baumannii is necessary regarding entire virulence and so represents a manuscript targeted to add mass to fresh antibiotics. At any time there have been a truism that is that their a totally defensive Plasmodium falciparum malaria vaccine can be desperately needed. Each of our institute features devoted all its endeavours over the last Thirty years to be able to creating a fully protecting, small subunit-based, multiepitope, multistage (focusing on sporozoite as well as merozoite protein), chemical produced antimalarial vaccine, given that peptides with good joining activity to their equivalent host tissues (hard working liver cellular material or even crimson body cellular material) form the springboard pertaining to vaccine layout. Nevertheless, such maintained high activity joining peptides should be exclusively altered for you to render them straight into extremely immunogenic and protection-inducing peptides since they will be immunologically noiseless. These types of adjustments, reviewed in the Animations constitutionnel amount through H-1-NMR, enable them a much better squeeze into your MHC II-peptide-T-cell receptor complicated to stimulate an appropriate resistant result, providing the reasonable as well as logical method (reviewed with the solitary atom amount) pertaining to vaccine improvement, especially in the area of malaria. Background Babies using post-haemorrhagic ventricular dilatation (PHVD) have a superior likelihood of severe incapacity and also selleck chemicals llc parenchymal infarction boosts this specific threat. Present cranial ultrasound exam (CUS) markers of neurodevelopmental outcome are based on categorical features. Objective To analyze how much quantitative CUS proportions methylhexanamine associated together with seriousness of developing outcome along with the requirement for ventriculoperitoneal (Vice president) shunt from 2 years of age. Design 69 premature babies using PHVD had side ventricle area, intraventricular echodensity as well as parenchymal lesion sizes tested at the start of strategy to PHVD.
