Ling becoming Emperor and one of the first things he does is start sending Ed “betrothal” gifts.

Higher ups encouraging this as “it would promote peace”.

Ed pointing out he doesn’t want to just be someone’s concubine, and whatever envoy Ling sent with the gifts being like “oh no, you would be the official spouse.”

Ling may have let on about Ed’s parentage and his knowledge and his skill with alchemy (let’s say he just used “father” as his payment for Al and kept his alchemy) (I just dislike people having to give up something they love and is intrinsic to them) and Ed is practically the equivalent of an entire army in one person, making the xigian court be like, if it's him he can be your official consort. Adding that being male, edward will produce no issue thus ensuring that one child will still be chosen as usual from the clans.
