A particularly interesting post came up on my dash today from @superherorobots; cover artwork for a new Mega Man board came from Jasco Games, the studio behind ‘Mega Man: The Board Game’! The post was of great interest to me for a variety of reasons. For one, the cover artwork itself is BEASTLY. I think the pose they drew Mega Man in is one of his best key art poses we’ve seen in a while, and it’s really neat to see some appreciation for some underrepresented robot masters like Shade Man and Magic Man (All we need now is Centaur Man and we’re golden). Even IMPACT MAAAAAAAN is there! Secondly, the logo for Mega Man All-Stars I quite like, mostly because of how big of a ‘classic Mega Man’ influence it has with the gradient typeface and star symbol. I liked it enough to the point where I figured out just how to spend my afternoon...
Tumblr media
By making an 8-Bit demake of it! Surprisingly, this was actually a great deal tougher than I had expected it to be merely because of the ‘All-Stars’ text itself. Getting text that size to look any good especially in italics is never an easy task, but I think that it looks pretty great for the extremely short timespan I made this in! Enjoy this demake of Mega Man All-Stars’ fantastic logo!

Even though my Redesigns of "Mega man Dr Wily's Final Attack!" didn't get much attention, I'm going to show my Redesigns of the robot masters from "Mega man Rocks!" A game created by Eric Ruth. Eric made this game as a joke so at times the level layouts and programming is a bit infuriating, but I honestly just want to work on the robot designs. At the end of this post, I have a link to a full play through of the game, but be warned that the music can be hard to listen to.
Snow Man☃️
Tumblr media
Snow man is a robot that does look like a literal snow man, but mixed with a snow plow. Originally his arms were just the snow pusher and his head would lift up to reveal his Snow blower attack. For the redesign I made his body a bit more rounded, gave him arms, and a smaller snow shovel. Snow men make me think of Christmas, so I added a bit of red and green. His head lifting up to reveal the snow blower felt off to me, so instead I made his hat lift up. Originally in the game his weakness is Repo claw since he's part vehicle, but I don't think heavy treads work the same as tires, so I made him weak to Fire popper instead, since heat melts snow (plus, I feel his room layout could hint at it being his weakness). This is the only weakness chain where I mix it up a bit. My version of Snow blower would still work like the original, It's a fairly decent weapon that fires a short range but multi-hitting blast of snow.
Mechanic Man🔧
Tumblr media
Originally named "Repair man" (as all robots are supposed to have pun names related to professions and such in this game) I decided to redesign him with extra tool arms and made up in his lore that he's made for testing a new experimental tool which Wily decides to weaponize after stealing him. He's originally weak to the Fire weapon, but in my new chain he's weak to Snow Blower, since his prototype phase design hasn't been properly weather proofed yet. His original weapon, Repair blast, is usually just a boring and semi slow projectile that heals enemies rather than harming them, and only interacts with machinery, which is interesting... but makes it not really a weapon. The Laser Wrench takes what was interesting about the Repair blast, but adds three aditional perks: armor piercing, upwards aiming, and the ability to heal Mega man at the cost of high energy consumption, like the original it still interacts with machinery too.
Anchor Man ⚓
Tumblr media
Anchor Man originally had an airmen body type like he does here, but that was it really... he was just a round boi who could swim and drop sinking scrap metal for apparently no reason... so I took his shape and worked with it a bit more. His face is now the bottom hull of a boat/submarine, and whenever he swims up you can see that his back is the top of a ship. Why does he drop scrap? Now he has a hatch where he collects scrao and cleans the ocean. Originally he's weak to repair blast, but only when shooting the scrap and turning it into sea mines that float back up to hurt him, which is actually cool. I kept that weakness, but since Laser Wrench can pierce through his armor and won't heal him you don't have to rely on a single attack phase just to hit him with it. His weapon now works a little differently too. Instead of just being a boring projectile, it can also be aimed up a bit so it bounces.
Door Man🚪
Tumblr media
Door man actually had a fairly nice design to begin with, so I just added my own little touch ups and focused more on explaining why he has a screen wiping flash attack and a rotating body. In my lore, he's a hotel managing robot with a rotating body for multitasking, but when Wily kidnaps him and modifies him for Combat, he decides to install experimental quantum Technology, which even baffles Door man himself. His weapon now called Quantum Door instead of Door Stopper still has a screen wiping flash, but my buff allows mega man to warm a short distance so it's not just a Centaur flash clone. His weakness is still Steel Anchor, as a heavy anchor makes a good battering ram and he wasn't made to be armored or heavy to begin with.
Police Man🔰
Tumblr media
I was stuck on this one admittedly, so he ended up being heavily inspired by Fake man's concept art when redesigning him. During his boss fight he can fly for some reason with no visual indicator that he's able to, so I gave him a jetpack that Wily installed after kidnapping him. In the lore he's a good well intentioned cop, but he's a bit too serious and has a habit of jumping to conclusions, and getting extremely embarrassed and apologetic when he realizes he's done so. Originally he's weak to Hit Man's weapon, but his shield protects him from that super effectively, so I made him weak to Quantum Door instead. Even a shield is no match for a distortion of space. His weapon is unchanged, but has the added buff of destroying projectiles completely, even while being thrown.
Mercenary Man❌
Tumblr media
He actually had a very cool design as well, but I decided to add my own creative twist to it and made him Cyclopic, with a target eye. In my lore he's actually built by Wily, not stolen, and was made to have very incredible and lethal aim. His weapon remains unchanged, as a target reticle that summons a bullet storm once it lands on a target is really epic. While he was originally weak to Door, he's now Weak to Badge barrier, based on the fact I gave it the projectile destroying buff and all of his attacks are projectile based.
Repo Man🗜
Tumblr media
Repo man was originally kind of your generic Guts man styles big boi, but I added some extra traits like a backwards cap and parts based on cars. In his lore I made up, he's made to dismantle cars, but he loves to collect car parts, and has a keen interest in Turbo man. Originally he's weak to Police, but I decided to make him weak to Target Tag instead. Both play on the fact car repossession can sometimes be a shady business, you can sometimes get in trouble with the law, or make dangerous enemies. His weapon is also pretty solid and left unchanged, a powerful spiked clamp that can grab items is always nice.
Pipe Man🔥
Tumblr media
Pipe man was originally named Fire man, so out of the eight robots he was the one who definitely needed a name change. While he is a hydrant, I also didn't want to name him that since that would imply he attacks with water. So I looked up Firefighting related words, and came across a page explaining Fire fighting slang, and found a slang term that fit with Eric's original profession pun style: Pipe man, the Fire fighter who runs right up to the Fire with the hose (Fire fighters refer to the hose as a pipe). While keeping his hydrant design, I gave him only one hose arm, a fire fighter helmet, boots and gloves based on a fire fighter, and a lore explinaton for his odd balloon weapon. When not fighting flames, Pipe man would exchange his water tank for a helium tank because he loves showing kids around the station and handing out balloons, but then Wily kidnapped him, using a flammable gas to weaponize both his hose arm and balloons. Originally he's weak to Snow Blower, but instead he's now Weak to Repo claw, since the clamp could pop his balloons and rip up his hose. His weapon also remains unchanged as a balloon that pops into a shower of fire upon contact with a surface or enemy is really cool.
Sorry if this post got long, I actually really loved redesigning these robots because while Eric made the game as a joke, I still kind of like the themes he went with for his robots. Here's that play through of the game I mentioned at the beginning, did I do Eric's bots justice?

Reviewcaps: Mega Man: Fully Charged (BOOM!) #1
Tumblr media
After 5 long years the Blue Bomber returns to comics and to the Fully Charged Universe! Things get a lot more grim as Aki grapples with a new robot army under actual robots, his buried past, and the fact Mega Mini is still around for some reason. Cracked skulls and dead cells under the cut.
So i’m a huge mega man fan. I haven’t really talked about video games here because this is my first video game adaptation, but yeah, I love em and Capcom’s vast and awesome franchise of robots and humanoids in blue, and in one case red, is one of my faviorites. From children blowing up tons of robots from a balding man who dosen’t get the hint already, to the pacifist soldier forced to fight in a war against robot whales, buffalo, mammoths, and other bizzare robot animals, to his best friend who has amnesia for some reason fighting more robot animals because capcom ran out, to his human sucessors wearing him like a hat, to some guy who turns out to be a war machine I haven’t played yet because I haven’t gotten the chance to and is the only part of the franchise I haven’t, to another universe where he’s the ai versoin of a dead child whose now a teenager mentally, to that ai’s sucessor a shy child whose dad was kidnapped by a space monster and fuses reguarly with a much cooler space monster. What i’m saying Is I deeply love this franchise, this franchise is complicated iwth all the branches, and it’s also full of lovely nonsense.
So naturally with that many versions and a decades long history Mega Man’s had a healthy life in one of my other faviorite meddieums: Comics. Over in his home country of Japan Mega Man’s had tons of Manga: The biggest and one of the few to make it here is Mega Man Megamix, a bunch of stories that, after the first two adapted the first two games in their own rough way, took place after each of the various games, and is pretty damn good. Others off the top of my head include a Mega Man x adaptation where X dates a mermaid, a weird mega man zero adaptation, and a longrunning adaptation of Mega Man Battle Network, all ones I need to read.
Even Brazil had a Mega Man Manga... which I need to cover too.. less because it’s actually good or notable, and more because it’s BATSHIT INSANE, and you can read about it here. But the cliffs notes: Roll is an adult woman who goes around naked half hte time and is the most importnat character, X is master roshi with all the restraint and panty snatching that implies, and ther’es a character that one writer tried to have kill everyone and take over the comic.. yes really. I go most of this .l from that page but it’s documented on various wikis that this did actually happen. Just.. why. All of it.  Meanwhile in the US.. we didn’t get that many. No nintendo power adaptations despite being a huge franchise, no horrible malibu comics like street fighter got. There was one attempt by Dreamwave comics in the early 2000′s a series that only lasted 5 issues, and had mega man trying to go to school and some intresting if loose takes ont he franchise.. but the company bottomed out due to horirble mismanagment soon after and mega man sat ont he shelf for a while until the early 2010′s. At a time when Capcom had given up on the franchise, which has thankfully changed dramatically with the release of 11 and the various mega collections, they still gave the liscence to Archie comics, who, wanting some more of that sweet money they were getting off of sonic, gladly took the lisence and gave it to  Sonic Scribe and easily the best one the comic had during it’s long run, Ian Flynn, who set about adapting mega man from day 1, while incorperating nods and call forwards to the various other versions of the blue bomber, and adding his own nice touches. What i’ve read is really damn good and it’s a shame it got cut off right before the adaptation for mega man 4. I’m only being so brief as .. I intend to cover it like i’ve been saying. I love the character, Flynn’s comic was one of the best versions of him bar none, and I could use more comics content on here too. It’s a win win, smiles all around.  But yeah sadly Archie lost intrest in doing non-Archie stuff, with the Archie Horror Line proving a sucess and a reboot on the horizon. While I do LOVE Archie Comics, this edotiral decision still leaves a bad taste in my mouth and left fans without any mega man till 11 came out and any comics till this year, when the rights apparently lapsed and Boom! Studios, home of such great comics as the mighty morphing power rangers ongoing and JOhn Allison’s wonderful Giant Days, swept it up. Hopefully Boom! will reprint the archie comics eventually, but until then they decided to do a softish reboot of another version of the franchise, another one that like Archie had been given a raw deal.. but unlike Archie had issues: Mega Man; Fully Charged
While most of you probably know this as a refrsher Mega Man: Fully Charged was a cartoon from a few years back, a CGI adatpation of the games in an attempt to get in on that market by Ben 10 and Generator Rex maestro’s Man of Action. Like the Dreamwave comics it followed Mega Man, now Aki LIght as he went to school, did school stuff, and also fought rouge robots after school with secret powers he unlocked before the pilot and were never elaborated on in show.  The show kept Dr. Light, Mega Man’s creator and dad, and his dog Rush who while at first looking nothing like the games was later upgraded to resemble his game counterpart more from what i’ve heard and what’s present in this comic. Replacing Mega’s sister Roll, as his real name was Rock because the Mega Man staff loved musical puns, was Suna.. whos basically the same character but human and with an entirely diffrent design.  The show also, for whatever fucking reason, added... Mega Mini.. a tiny robot with a brooklyn accent who lived inside Aki, Mega Man’s regular name in this series which i’m fine with as while I do lik ehim going by Rock, I get that’s not really a name. Mini also manages his powers, makes stupid jokes and makes me pray for death but death won’t come. As you can tell I hate the little bugger from the handful of episodes i’ve watched. Rounding out our main heroes is Aki’s best friend Bert Wily, whose likely related to the canon wily and is your standard dorky best friend, but his roll as an inventor does come in handy since Mega hasn’t told his dad he’s a superhero, though it’s revealed in the end that he knows.. I did do my homework, even if i’ve only seen a handful of the series. More on that in a minute.  Opposing Mega Man were various robots from the games, adapted with varying degrees of design, from the good.
Tumblr media
To the okay if a bit weird.
Tumblr media
To the how the fuck is this airman. This is airman
Tumblr media
Really good basic design. This is what fully charged calls airman,
Tumblr media
Why.. why not just make him Wind Man. He looks more like Wind Man.. why did ... I can bitch about this later when I cover the series, which, yes AGAIN I intend to. BUt seriously he has an awesome looking fan for a face. How do you screw that up.
Behind the robot masters was Sgt. Night. See in a nice twist, and one of the things I like about the series, the world of Fully Charaged already had the kind of robot on human war that would plauge the main mega man timeline for centuries in the backstory, with LIght and Night being vetrans. Night being a racisit moron, wanted to keep robots apart and set up a false flag operation do do so as Commander Night. He however.. wasn’t a compelling vilian and apparnetly dosen’t really get better, not having any depth to his operations or actoins and his basic plan turns out to be, thank you research, to wipe all robots minds to be subservient.. he’s just.. bland compared to wily who while not complex in his motives, he just wants to take over the world, still has style and in some cases, real thought to his plans. Sure the vast majority are “blame it on someone else” but in a LOT of those cases, there’s still thorught and effort put into who he’s blaming to take doubt away from him. IN universe at least.  Helping night, is Namagem... yes Mega Man..spelled backwards and this series protoman, but hte character suprisingly DOES sound intresting... he just has one of the worst names in human history. Like my god, in god we trust why not just use proto man. the Character is basically proto man, with the interesting backstory of night kidnapping him, and apparently the series gets loads better once he arrives, so i’m not going to be too hard on the name, as the writers were likely stuck with it.    But as i’ve made apparent.. I haven’t watched much of the series. I do want to watch it all and i’m aware the second half is much better, but when trying to binge watch it at a friends house I only got about halfway through season 1, and then just forgot to keep going. And the series does have good pieces: a compelling background of a brutal war, mysteries to unlock, and a steady supply of new villians via the games long history and the series own original, and honestly intresting sounding and looking, robot masters... but it stapled all this to a “cocky hero fights vilians” every week setup we’ve seen a million times and didn’t grab me, but the intresting worldbuildnig and original bits do have me wanting to give it another try so look forward to that.  And with all the intresting bits i was truly invested to see a comic make more out of this part of the franchise,a nd was utterly excited, as it could be what the series could’ve been with less hampering by the various parties involved, as fully charged felt like it had a lot of executive madates slapped on. So free of those and free to be whatever it wants with Joe Kelly advising, what has fully charged become? let’s take a look.
We Open 6 months after the series with the comic helpfully catching us via news broadcast.. and the art being moody with washed out colors the tone having done a 180. Seriously it is kind of weird for this unvierse to go from early generator rex, a dark backstory with a bizzarely cheery tone to full on Blade Runner or to put it in mega man terms, The Megas. Seriously the breif bit of silicon city we see , the constant rain as a mysteroius figure whose revealed at the end of the next page to be Namagem.. I expect that a pretty hologram in a raincoat is going to pop up next to him any moment... what I can pick which blade runner I want to refrence. Shoo.
Anyways a broadcast debate between a human reporter and her robot coanchor , ron roburgundy as I will call him, fills us in on exposition, while Mega Man himself narrators like this is a noir.. again i’m half expecting harrison ford to show up. Aki muses about how the city, HIS CITY, almost fell.. oh god is frank miller writing this? Are we going to get a middle schooler talking about how much he wants to make love to a city because no one wants that.  Anyways, we get expostion, both for anyone who hadn’t watched the series to give us the cliff notes, and to also catch up returning fans on what they missed. I like it, despite not having watched fully charged to the end, or known exactly what happened until research, this fills it in nicely: At the end of season 1, as I explained earlier Night was arrested, and is thankfully not a part of it nor is his foghorn leghorn attempt at a southren accent. However the remaning Robot Masters are still rioting and a new army of them has started a legit revolution, vandalizing the good guild, which still has that name for some reason despite the tone shift, who are about as compitent as the name implies. Here’s file footage of them fighting Pharoah Man.
Tumblr media
Anyways Dr. Light is going to negotiate peace and as I mentoned earlier nams is watching with a glare on his face. And yeah I .. I can’t keep calling him Namagem. That name is just bad and whoever came up with it is one of the biggest morons in marketing history as is whoever decided to force the poor creative team to use it. However while he is Protoman in ways.. it just dosen’t fit. The two were made together in this unvierse, maybe we’ll see as this comic fills in the blanks, and furthermore he’s a bit of protoman and bass.. and since protobass sounds stupid, and blues dosen’t work without the theme naming.. i’m going with Breakman, protoman’s disgusie from 3. With the heavy scaring, broken past and general state of him it just.. fits and HOPEFULLY the comic will give him a full on rename. If it does i’ll go with that but for now I just want to keep from slamming my head into a keyboard every time I have to type out NAMAGEM... excuse me.
hgfjnhnghbjnh
That’s better. Okay so moving on from my new headache, we cut to the desert where the good guild, which is somehow even worse than Breakman’s actual name, are escorting light to a bunker in the desert, where the robots outside tell light to leave the good guild inside. Just as well he’d be better protected with a paper mache sword anda  note telling them to go away.
Naturally, not long inside the robot masters leader forces light to bow and handcuffs him, before revealing himself.
Tumblr media
Skull Man. Who looks really badass in this thought, the skulls themed scrap throne, his regal posture and his speeches about how he feels that the only way things will be right, and settled is not by the fragile peace silicon city has but by humans beneath his rather sizable boots. And honestly.. he was a good choice for the main robot antagonist: Skull Man’s always had a cool look to him and most versions of him have been pretty cool, and the Megas gave him one hell of a theme song. If you haven’t heard of htem the Megas are an indie rock band that do reworkings of the various songs from mega man games, at the time of this recording a full album for 2, two full albums for 3, an ep for 1, and scattered other songs since the second 3 album, with plans to do their next full album on mega man x. Each of the stage themes for the robot masters is from the prosepctive of one of them and are really damn good and I’d recommend thema nd skullman’s.. really fits him here. take a listen.
youtube
But yeah Skull Man feels like a good choice for a menacing revolutionary, as well as a former combat robot as he himself was apparently in the hard wars. He honestly reminds me a lot of more than meets the eye megatron in flashbacks.. just good stuff. But being in the wars, he’s naturally not too fond of repetant vetran light and plans to kill him as an example. Light however.. isn’t an idiot.. a good man who seeks to do his best, who came in good faith.. but just in case he put some sort of device under his skin and presses it, signaling his son to come save his ass. And thus he does come ...
Tumblr media
And one of skullman’s minons mistakes him for a bomb.. which light clarifies i’ts a BLUE BOMBER. To skullman’s credit his response is to just order them to go full throttle showing no panic as Mega Man makes his entrance.
Tumblr media
Light thanks him by.. asking what took him so long.. when his son, whose a middle schooler mind you, had to fight through a bunch of armed assholes to get in here most likely. Mini shows up to my annoyance.. though credit where it’s do his zinger of what took so long “some birds, a plane, some guy in a cape” is actually.. really funny. I question why they kept him at ALL, but hey, at least he’s less grating and isn’t around long.. more on that in a minute.
A really well drawn action scene insues.. while the expressions vary for this comic, I will give the fight scnee, I will give the artist credit for having fluid motion and nice pops of color, most things are kind of blendy into the background other than major character but the color pops where it should.. not exactly my style but it works okay. In a nice change of his character though, Aki offers to spare the various robots there of a fight and possible death, as while he already attacked them it was in self defense.  And while it is a 180 from the show.. it’s not only a welcome change as it’s closer to the games canon and a more intersting personality.. it also still works. Aki went through a LOT at the end of season 1: while he did win, he found out he had a brother, his dad knew who he was but was never honest with him about it and also likely knows where his power came from but hasn’t told him, and has had to deal with 6 months worth of rioting where he’s unsure what side he’s on, machine like he is or man like his family. He’s trying to find the right ballance; be the hero his city needs.. but be the man he needs to be, one who will spare his enemies and won’t fight unless he needs to, for the good fo everyone, His friends, his family, everyone in the city who deserves to sleep soundly. And he’s also starting to wonder, via narration of course, if he’s a hero.. or even a kid.. or a weapon> Which again while a bit of a shift from the series again makes sense: he’s a middle school aged boy who started this jsut fighting random assholes and some idiot racist who was transparently evil and had selfish goals.. now he’s fighting against a revolution who MIGHT have a point. While Silcion city seemd fine and equal.. there wer eplenty of idiot swilling to listen to night. As the real world has proven over the last few months, just because things have gotten better, dosen’t mean that things are 100% or that prejudice is just gone. He’s a 12 year old asked to take a stand in a messy conflict that lead to war in the past with his father offering no answers and growing colder. While I thought his angst was  bit overblown on first reading the more I think about it the more it fits.
Anyways Mega makes short work of the skull squad after they refuse to back down, but while Mega Man’s ready to ghost.. Skull Man’s not done and drills into mega man’s head... and reveals something. Flashbacks.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
But yeah, Skull Man’s either implanted or restored some memory of Aki fighting in the hard wars.. right alongside dr. light.. with a drill because science. DR. Light then gets REALLY badass, breaking out of the robot restraining him’s grip before fucking UPERCUTTING Skull Man.. jesus christ, Dr.Light clearly traded his empathy for miraclo pills holy balls.  Rush helps him escape and take Aki with him but skull man’s confident, he lost the battle but won Mega’s mind.  On the way home Mega Man tells dr.light what he saw and isn’t sure if it’s the past the future or something else but Dr.Light assures him..
Tumblr media
Even though his eyes give away he’s clearly hiding something. Also I haven’t mentioned it yet but Dr.Light looks like santa in this sisue, red shirt, blue pants, big white beard. Just.. why though. Just put him in a suit or something. Also Mini crawls out of Mega’s head and passes out due to the memory restoration.. a nice way to write him out while still giving it weight since while the audience is presumibly cheering his long overdue demise, he is aki’s friend.. why I have no idea but he is.  Back at the lighthouse, the light’s home and home base, which is admitely a really good alternate name for light labs and a better one in my opinon. Light brushes off Suna, telling her to go to bed and avoiding telling her anything. Yeahhh.. while it could be the pressure of the situation I really dont’ like dr.light’s characterization before. Fully Charged, outside of the whole secret identity thing which at least was expalined as Aki not knowing if his dad would let him continue as mega man if he knew, though it extended clearly past the point he was clearly supporting mega man’s actions so I dunno. But he was a compationste scientest, deeply ashamed of his past in the war and wanting to make peace, he was done really well and peformed well by gary chalk. Here? He’s a dick who clearly did something terrible in the past and treats his kids like crap. It’s okay to be suspcious of him given the flashback but he’s given us no reason to like him or want to hear his side eventually, and hopefully that changes.
Suna talks to Aki who tells her what happened and both side give out good arguments; Suna points out she reallyc an’t trust what some creepy asshole put in his head, as Skull Man could just want to brainwash him.. but Aki counters easily and quietly: How’s he supposed to know what’s real if his dad won’t tell him anything? He took months to tell Aki he knew about his alter ego, and even before his id came out avoided talking about the hard war, which hasn’t changed. He vows to find out though, and Suna naturally is helpful, pointing out there’s more people to ask and since she actually pays attention in school she knwos just who.. Dr. Wily. Yup he’s finally here. dun dun dun. We then close as Breakman watches and tells his brother he can’t stop what’s started. And we’re out.  Mega Final Thoughts: This was a decent issue, doing a fair job of bringing in new readers, and the art was decent and matched the tone.. which If elt was a bit too bleak at times. Better than say a Zack Snyder film at least, but still a bit too close to that form of edgelord for my case. That said it opens up some intresting mysteries and has me at least willing to give it another shot next month and was a solid opener, which while not having the best charcterzation for dr light, vastly improved Aki and Suna’s while giving us a far more intersting villian in Skull Man. If this holds, we’ll see. But until then I plan to cover more mega man comics, as well as my continued weekly coverage of amphibia. Until I see you again, stay safe, wear a mask and later days

Have some Mega Man 2 Personality WriteUps!
MEGA MAN 2 ROBOT MASTERS PERSONALITIES (SORT OF; PLAYING OFF OF PRE-EXISTING) Author: milkywaywishes
I don’t have much purpose for posting this, other than I love Mega Man 2, and wanted to post my analysis of their personalities (with a little headcanon swirled in!) If you wanna use these as reference by all means reblog, like, etc!
METAL MAN:  The silent one of the group. He rarely ever talks, and when he does, it's usually to give advice or look down on one of his brothers' actions. Prefers to act as backup for one of his other brothers, but becomes significantly more dangerous and sporadic when fought one - on - one. When fighting, he is a little more talkative and a lot more sarcastic, and his aim is extremely precise. Though Quick Man likes to act like he is the head of the group, all of the second generation robots know that Metal Man is the true leader. AIR MAN:  Is the toughest looking out of the group, and while he has earned a fierce reputation (can't beat Air Man), is actually one of the friendlier brothers. Truly enjoys fighting, and though he does have the intent to destroy his opponent, likes to go out of his way to make an exciting battle rather than finish off his enemy immediately. Tends to spend his both his battle time and spare time alone, and makes a hobby out of planning out future attacks on Monsteropolis and Mega Man. Is not one for conversation, but if you ask him about himself he will spend hours giving you the answer. BUBBLE MAN: Is the weakling of the group, but makes up for it in optimism and specialized talent. He’s extremely neat by nature and is constantly spending excessive money, mostly on new organizational systems for the many Wily Fortresses. Despite having a weapon that even Wily admits is awful for combat, the Bubble Lead does have handy corrosive features that allows him to carve away at most metal surfaces, and combined with his waterproof systematics, is the only robot from his line truly capable of fighting in multiple environments. Becomes nervous a little easily, but is able to stand his ground even if he’s being picked on. QUICK MAN:  Is very arrogant and hyper all the time, but is the most loyal of the group. Besides Flash Man, who he argues with constantly, he cares for his brothers deeply and is willing to jump in their way to (literally) catch a bullet or two. He talks almost as fast as he walks, and never stops once he starts. Constantly uses his speed and boomerang powers to the point that his left optic is almost always glitching and flickering from lack of energy. Does better fighting solo, but works well with Crash Man and Heat Man, as they both have very destructive attack patterns that keep him on his toes and prevent him from getting bored and making mistakes. CRASH MAN: Is the wild card of the group, and easily considered the most threatening. Though he can be pleasant at times, he gets into trouble a lot for losing his temper, subsequently causing the destruction of helpful equipment and/or ruining surprise attacks. Admired by his brothers for always being forthright and truthful, even if his honesty tends to be very blunt and provoking. Always ends up in the wrong situation at the wrong time, and is constantly getting damaged, either through bad luck or sheer recklessness. Probably Wily's least favorite of the second gens, therefore the doctor doesn't really try to keep tabs on or control him as much as the others. FLASH MAN:  Is a serious fighter who tends to complain and gets into a lot of small rifts with his brothers, namely Quick Man. Is one of Wily's favorites and is secretly considered one of the more dangerous brothers, despite not having a very powerful blaster to accompany his weapon. Gets teased a lot for being grouchy, but can find it in his heart to be caring at times. Has also been known to steal little things (such as rings) occasionally when using his time stopping powers, and loves to fluster enemies by attacking them solely during time pauses. HEAT MAN: Is extremely obnoxious and known to be the slacker of the group. Gets along with others without much issue, and works best in a team environment, where he can coordinate his attacks with others. While he can fight really well, he tends to overestimate his strength, which can lead to close calls or even his loss of the battle. Despite this, he is very resilient and defends himself well, and always keeps in mind the strength and range of his weapon compared to his opponent's when fighting. Is constantly targeted by Metal Man for slacking off from his duties, or for smoking in non-designated areas. WOOD MAN: Is the peacekeeper of the group, and is very kind but firm with others. Loves spending time with others outdoors, but fights best alone due to his tendency to worry way too much about his cohorts. Definitely is the easiest to befriend of the brothers, but also is extremely loyal to Wily and therefore takes a lot of time to forgive dishonest actions. Works very hard at assigned tasks, but likes to take his sweet time and isn't always the fastest option. Despite this, Wily is very quick to give him favor and praise (mostly because Wily spent lots of time figuring out how to construct him, and is therefore very proud of his existence in general).
Hope this helps someone out!!

4 Reasons Mega Man 11 is the Best Game in the Series Since 2
Tumblr media
Mega Man’s been around a while; 31 years, to be exact. The Blue Bomber was one of the biggest characters in gaming in my ancient youth, right up there with Mario, Link and Final Fantasy Guy. The main difference is that while most of gaming’s legends of yesteryear evolved to keep up with the changing times, Mega Man was a victim of his own success. The formula that made his name---the punishing difficulty, the precise platforming, the stealing of boss weapons---was so incredibly specific that it was hard to imagine the series thriving outside of those roots. Indeed, when Mega Man did go 3D, the resulting Mega Man Legends, while good, was basically an entirely different game with a Mega Man-based coat of paint. The throwback Mega Man 9 and 10 were hits with us old fogeys, but didn’t appeal to a new generation of kids like Rock had to us. The series needed something fresher. And after a decade-long hiatus, it got it. Here are four reasons why Mega Man 11 is the best game in the core series since 2.
Tumblr media
All of Your Weapons are Actually Worth a Damn
Well…almost. Acid Barrier is pretty garbage (so, naturally, it is the final boss’s weakness). For the most part, though, the Mega Man tradition of giving you a couple boss weapons you regularly use, a couple you use situationally, and a bunch you play around with once and then never touch again seems, mercifully, to have ended. The first boss you’re recommended to beat gives you the amazing Block Dropper weapon, and from there you get the ability to summon tornadoes of ice, electrify the walls, and literally fire a flaming dragon. The gear system allows you to power up your attacks, turning most of them into real displays of power (again, other than Acid Barrier, which is really half-assing it). Even the melee weapon is pretty cool, a thing I thought I would never say about a Mega Man game. I’m a bit of a Mega Man fan; I even ranked every weapon in the series, an extremely nerdy article you can find at the link below. If I were to update the list, most of MM11′s weapons would be near the top.

Tumblr media
The Bosses are Exciting Again
Face it, guys: in Mega Man 9 and 10, fighting the actual Robot Masters, the eight bosses that rule each stage, was starting to feel less like an epic showdown, and more like an obligation after overcoming their booby-trapped hell gauntlet. The process hadn’t changed much since the original game, and although many (including myself) found the 8-bit throwback graphics charming, they also kept the full potential of a boss’s art design from being put on display. No more. Most of the eight bosses in 11 are crisp and detailed visually, and the fact they can now transform into powerful secondary modes brings that epic feeling back to boss fights. The obligatory ice boss is a totally fabulous figure skater, the electricity-based one is like fighting a super villain, and the fire one has moves like a street fighter character. Familiar tropes are given new life here. The only downside is that there’s no way to play as these bad-asses; there were several I’d want to see in the next Capcom crossover fighter. It also must be said that unlike the much-maligned voicework in Mega Man 8, these guys are actually good at taunting you.
There’s an Actual Significant Change to the Formula
When I first read about the Double Gear system, which allows you to either slow time or power up your attacks as long as you’ve got enough juice, I assumed it would be a lot like the Mega Ball or the then-controversial Mega Buster as it originally appeared in 4: things you never used unless you had to. In practice, the game never forces you to use these abilities at all, yet at the same time is designed and built to make full use of them. Purists can fight through the game without ever touching them, but if you’re like me and don’t have the time to die over and over, Speed Gear is especially cool, and seeing everything during a boss fight slow down is pretty slick. Power Gear allows you to charge up even your special weapons, ALA Mega Man X, resulting in things like massive bombs that cause huge explosions and being able to drop a building’s worth of bricks on your enemies. It’s a fun change, and for once it really feels like it was fully implemented in the gameplay.
Tumblr media
It’s Accessible
Mega Man 11 adds the option of four difficulty levels, from the blisteringly impossible Superhero to the kid-friendly Newcomer. Unlike the easier difficulty in Mega Man 10, no pits are covered, and no challenges are bypassed; the only difference is more forgiving checkpoints in stages, more starting lives, and that good ‘ole Rock takes less damage. The one exception is Newcomer, which negates instant death from pits and spikes and is designed for modern kids, who didn’t grow up expecting games to whip them like rented mules for daring to enjoy themselves.
This has been the big sticking point for a small-but-vocal minority of hidebound 30-and-40-somethings, who, like a septuagenarian insisting kids are too soft these days, stubbornly demand that people should either play Mega Man the way they did, or not play it at all, because the experience just isn’t “right” unless it’s punishingly difficult.
Who is right in this scenario? Who has the ability to tell one side their opinion is wrong? I do. If a classic series becoming accessible to people who are not you pisses you off, you’re wrong, and dumb. “Kids these days” have gotten it in their empty little heads that the point of a video game is to have fun (gasp!), not to be brutalized. Hell, I don’t like playing a game that is the equivalent of being whipped in the genitals over and over; I did my playthrough on Casual difficulty, the second tier, and felt it was just the right balance of fun and challenge. And if you’re a masochist, the Normal and Superhero difficulties are still there. The fact that Mega Man is now accessible to everyone is probably not only necessary for the series to survive in a time when pain is no longer more important than pleasure in gaming, but is what makes this entry the best in decades.

Title Luminous Avenger iX Developer Inti Creates Publisher Inti Creates Release Date September 26th, 2019 Genre Action platformer Platform PC, Nintendo Switch, PS4, Xbox One Age Rating T for Teen – Blood, Fantasy Violence, Language, Suggestive Themes, Use of Tobacco Official Website
I’ve been a fanboy on the Gunvolt bandwagon long before Gunvolt Chronicles: Luminous Avenger iX. Not only did I play the first two games, but I also reviewed them both on the site. So in case there was any concern about my credibility talking about the series, let’s put that to rest. The initial question I had when I heard about Luminous Avenger iX was how far after the second game it took place. As I played, other significant questions came up, though there’s not much I can discuss for fear of spoilers. That said, I will do my best to touch upon those issues for other fans, as well as tackling the gameplay itself. While I’m still a fan of the Gunvolt series after Luminous Avenger iX, there’s also a few bumps in the road I need to address.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
As I stated above, it’s unclear how long after Gunvolt 2’s events that Luminous Avenger iX takes place, but things have definitely taken on new urgency. Now, Adepts are completely in power, and go so far as to hunt down and execute un-powered humans, referred to as Minos. Whereas I used to think of the Azure Striker Gunvolt series as a nod to Mega Man, now I can’t help but notice the similarity to the X-Men. In a way it’s a reverse of that comic series, a world where the super powered rule over the weak with cruelty. At the head of this dynamic is the Sumeragi Institute for the Promotion of Human Evolution, which is a group that should sound familiar to fans of the games. It’s not clear how this came to be, nor where Gunvolt himself is, but Copen’s not about to sit back and watch this atrocity continue. While his primary goal is to find the source of something called the Butterfly Effect, he also elects to protect a group of young street urchin Minos. Despite his often caustic and emotionless exterior, I found this was consistent with his personality. After all, he himself is technically a Mino, and his hatred has always been against Adepts. The key difference between him and your average Mino is his technical genius, which let him build Lola to copy and utilize Septima powers through mechanical means.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
Much like Inti did with previous series such as Mega Man Zero, each installment of the Gunvolt games has become slightly less hardcore and more welcoming to players of various experience levels. That is true in Luminous Avenger iX. An example of this is that the game has gotten rid of individual achievements. You still get graded after each level, so worry not if you’re a hardcore completionist. It’s just now you don’t have to worry about satisfying other arbitrary requests. Much like the last game, I found it somewhat easier to get a good score than in the original Gunvolt game, but not so easy I ever felt I wasn’t working for it. I got plenty of B’s, a few A’s and even one shining S+. The reason it’s still a challenge is that the gameplay is pretty similar to the most recent game, meaning that the bosses are still quite challenging.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
In case you need a refresher course, the game keeps the trend of tagging and then blasting foes. For Copen, you tag foes by literally dashing into them. You have a small window of invincibility when you connect, so you’re encouraged to be aggressive, but don’t be so aggressive you accidentally wander into enemy fire. When you tag a foe, it uses up a Bullit, of which you have 3. Once you’re out of Bullits, your Prevasion turns off, meaning you can take damage again. So combat is a tight balance of dashing into foes, hitting them with homing rounds, avoiding getting hit and rinsing and repeating. One nice new change is if you reload your Bullits in mid-air, you’ll charge down to the ground with a crash capable of breaking objects. Though you’ll have to be careful using it, since if you don’t land on solid ground, it’s game over.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
I’ve said previously how much I enjoy playing as Copen, and that’s still true. He’s fast, furious and frankly brutal. Coupled with Lola’s Septima EX weapons, he’s a veritable Swiss Army Knife of mayhem. Even then, playing him requires great reflexes and better strategy, especially against the bosses. One thing that’s changed from previous games is Copen can’t use credits to buy new active combat abilities. There is a Customize screen, where you can buy things like additional Bullits. You can also buy passive modifiers, such as Regenerator, which restores Copen’s health when he uses his SP Skill, or OD Guard Up, which halves damage when in Overdrive mode. If I sound a bit uncertain about these, it’s cause I didn’t purchase any of them during my playthrough. I like playing a game in as pure a form as possible, and for me that meant learning to master Copen without any extra helping hand. That said, if you’re the sort that likes to tinker, there’s a multitude of options for you to try out. If you’re feeling brave, you can also try out Lola’s new Darkness Trigger, which puts her in berserk mode, attacking with random EX skills until her meter depletes.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
While the combat is most definitely one of the biggest draws in Luminous Avenger iX, it would be meaningless without exhilarating boss fights. This game assuredly carries on that tradition, as it does the pattern of having 7 main Adept bosses you confront. While I normally don’t cover these in detail, I feel I should touch upon all seven Falcons real quick. First let’s talk about Rebellio. He’s on death row for crimes he committed, and Sumeragi decides to offer him a deal – kill Copen and live. His Septima is Energy Wool, which lets him create crimson constructs out of thin air, such as mace balls, gatling guns and more. As for his appearance, he looks like nothing so much as a very angry Ram. Then there’s Crimm, a psychopath who loves explosions and considers himself an artist. His Detonation Septima lets him rain pure destruction wherever he desires, gesturing with crustacean limbs while protected by a circular shield. Then there’s Stella. She may look like a floozy and talk like a sailor, but she’s actually the president of an electronics manufacturer. Her Septima is Gravity, which not only gives her the power to alter your movement, but to also manifest dangerous buzzsaws and energy beams. Of all the Adepts in this game, her transformation is the most mechanical, making her look like a living blade.
More Falcons on Page 2 ->

If you think Stella’s a hard case, then you should see her android manservant, Dystnine. He’s the only robot capable of using Septima, other than Lola, and his is particularly strange. His transformation makes him look like a mix between a unicorn and a bullfighter, and his Vectored Cloth Septima allows for some very interesting tricks, such as blocking attacks and tangling you up. Beyond just being a skilled fighter, he’s also completely loyal to Stella, to almost a romantic degree. Or take one of my personal favorites, Isola, who is essentially an evil Idol. Think Hatsune Miku but pink and insane, and you’re on the right track. Her Septima is Companion, and while you might not think she’s that dangerous, you’d better watch out before Isola shatters you with bright pink lights and holograms. If you feel like a tough guy, you can try on Bakto for size. He’s essentially a Yakuza boss, and his Spiral Septima turns him into a fierce, blue lion man. Lastly, there’s Blade. Blade is incredibly powerful, and doubly so when outraged and in berserk mode. Unlike the other Falcons, Blade seems to not be entirely in control of their actions. But don’t let that lower your defenses, since you’ll need all your skills to beat this recurring boss character.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
Frankly, I really enjoyed all the Falcons in the game, and felt they added a lot of personality and depth to the story. Especially since they reveal how diabolical Sumeragi has become. Most of the Falcons are only working for Sumeragi cause they’re forced to. Hell, Rebellio is on death row unless he can finish the job. Despite being in power, this shows how out of control and desperate they have become, a fact which becomes painfully apparent very late in the game. I can’t say why, but once you find out the truth behind the Butterfly Effect, you’ll hate Sumeragi with a burning passion. And by the very end of the game, you’ll question a good many things about the Gunvolt universe.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
As much as I loved the Falcons, I’m not sure I can say the same for all the Minos. They’re all adorable, especially self proclaimed pixie leader, Kohaku, but they just don’t feel that relevant in the game. Sure, Kohaku and her history serves a purpose, but the rest of them kind of feel like kawaii Charles Dickens knockoffs. Maybe if they got a bit more development I wouldn’t feel that way, but frankly I feel this is a pattern in the Gunvolt series. We get introduced to a new band of side characters each time, and very few of them actually matter. Which is a shame, since there’s so much I otherwise enjoy about the games.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
Visually, I can easily say Luminous Avenger iX is the most beautiful game in the series. Everything is bold, colorful and full of detail. Though I would never call the original 3DS graphics ugly, everything is so much better on Switch. Even the menus are attractive, and I really like the portrait art as well. As for the sound design, it’s also fantastic. The music is dynamic and draws you in, and the sound effects pop with personality. One of my favorite changes here is that now dialogue happens at set points in the level, and NEVER during combat. This is such a great improvement, and shows Inti Creates listens to fan feedback. It doesn’t hurt that all the voice actors in this game are tremendously talented. If we were grading this game just on the artistry, it would easily get a perfect score.
I know typos happen, but they still take me out of the experience…
Sadly, there are a few areas I feel Luminous Avenger iX falls short. Firstly, it really bothers me that I’m not sure if this game has different endings, as is tradition. While I can’t go into reasons why this bothers me, suffice it to say that some of the late game revelations really have me scratching my head. I would almost go so far as to suspect this game takes place in an alternate universe, it’s that big. But without knowing that for sure, it’s hard to ascertain how much I enjoyed the story at large. Another area that my lack of clarity irritated me was with the Bonus Medals. There’s 4 in each stage, and I’d love to tell you what they do, but I have no idea. While it’s true I did apparently unlock some Special Missions at some point in the game, I’m pretty sure that had nothing to do with the Medals. A more substantial gripe I have is with the translation. I usually don’t point out this sort of thing in the games I’m fond of, but it’s unavoidable here. Not only do some characters have very awkward grammatical flubs, there’s also some weird Westernization that occurs. I mentioned Bakto early, and how he’s essentially a Yakuza boss. I said “essentially” since in the game, he’s called a Mafia boss. Problem is, everything about him screams Yakuza, from his name to his demeanor. This wouldn’t bother me, except for the fact Inti Creates usually waves their Japan flag pretty high and proud. It just struck me as awkward to change that sort of thing, especially since fans of the series can tell what’s up. Lastly, a recurring issue I have is with the leveling system. It still feels too passive and unnecessary to me. It’d be one thing if leveling up did more than increase your base health, such as opening up modifiers you can equip or something. As it is, I just don’t feel that’s necessary at all for a game this fast paced and frenetic.

I did truly enjoy Luminous Avenger iX, but I can’t help but feel it wasn’t consistently awesome in every regard. The plot left more questions than it answered, and while the combat was definitely a lot of fun, I wanted more of it. Perhaps that’s because the last game had two protagonists instead of just one, but regardless there should have been something more to keep me playing. I managed to beat the entire game in a little over 3 hours, though I spent another 2 and change to try and find a secret ending. While I didn’t succeed in unlocking any new endings, there is still a bit of replay value. Those who like to tinker can unlock a lot of customization options, and truly hardcore fans can try and get an S+ for each stage. There’s also the aforementioned Special Missions, which are basically remixed forms of stages with harder boss fights. For $14.99, you still get an amazing game with Luminous Avenger iX. I just hope that the next adventure does more to explain the setting of this title, as well as to expand on the areas the series already excels.
