Ann's Mourning of Anne
Discover the ways Ann implicitly and explicitly mourned Anne Lister after her death in 1840. Read this new blog by Diane Halford
This blog seeks to show the ways in which Ann Walker explicitly and implicitly mourned her wife after her death in 1840. She would not have been able to grieve in the way we would expect a widow to do so due to the lack of acknowledgment and acceptance of the true nature of their relationship within wider society. These facts are based on primary resources found in the archives. Anne’s Death and…

1835 January Sunday 18
8 25/..
11 1/4
no kiss very fine morning – hard frost – F 35° at 9 20/.. a.m. in my study – breakfast at 9 25/.. in 1/2 hour – from 10 5/.. to 11 1/2 wrote 3 pages and ends to Mariana – almost fear she will begin to think me long in writing – hope poor Watson is recovered and that she, Mariana, did not suffer from the fatigue of her journey to London but was better for it, and found Dr. Foley’s opinion of Pavey favourable and that he had no sever[e] apprehensions for the future (from consumption to which Mariana thinks she has one heredity claim) – Mariana’s better account of herself a great comfort to me – ‘It matters little who or what it was did the good, medicines or I, as long as the good really was done – my visit was altogether very well arranged; and, trust me, you will be more and more satisfied about it – I am quite sure Louisa would be of this opinion – now everything looks well, and everything will go well – the door is closed against every unpleasant remark; and I confidently hope, and think, we may “all live to meet in happiness” – at any rate, I shall find no fault; nor is it at all likely, you should find yourself wanting in my “good opinion to the last” – I am not a person of all promise and no performance – you have, at least, some confidence in the sincerity of my regard – and only get up your spirits, and take care of yourself, and I see nothing for any of us to fear – I may still be “the little box with a slit in it” with as much security as ever – But you will understand this better, and believe it more implicitly by and by’ – amused by her message from ‘ master Henry Hinchcliffe’ – ‘unfortunately his year could not be my year’ – however much I should like the tour he mentioned cannot leave home – my aunt however great her suffering may continue another 12 month at least – very busy at home – in Mr. Lawton’s way, - carting stuff from 1 place to another – she would see we gained one point (Mr. Wortley’s election) by only one vote – but it is confidently hoped our present premier will have a very sufficient majority in the commons, and I think the present ministry will weather out the 2 years and many more I hope – Mr. Lawton wagered a guinea with me that present ministry could not last 2 years - …… ‘I had no especial reason for leaving out the word you allude to; on the contrary, I had more reason for putting it in, had I thought of it – give me some credit for being as steady in time to come as in time past, and believe me always my dearest Mary very especially and affectionately yours A Lister’ – went to my aunt to read prayers at 11 55/.. and with her till 12 3/4 – then reading the 1st  xv pages De la Beche’s Geological notes till 1 50/.. – off to Lightcliffe church at 1 55/..  – there in 25 minutes – waited 12 minutes Mr. Akroyd did all the duty – never heard so much nonsense from any pulpit belonging to the established church of England – Mr. Akroyd preached 42 minutes from Matthews xx. latter part of verse 21 – sad, unconnected, bad English and stuff – very cold work – sadly impatient and tired – home at 4 35/.. 20 minutes with my father and Marian then wished good night and came upstairs – Adney had little John and Ann Booth as usual – wrote as follows about the newspaper – ‘Shibden hall, Sunday evening 18 January, 1835 Sir the morning Herald of Friday (the 16th) did not arrive yesterday evening, as it ought to have done, and was not arrived this morning – I shall be obliged to you to send it me, as I am anxious to have the set complete – Several papers of last summer, during my absence on the continent, were not received – I am sorry to have to complain of this negligence – if it does not originate with you, I shall take care to investigate the matter at the Halifax post office – Be so good as let me have your bill, up to the end of last year, (from 11 June); and I will give you an order on Messrs. Hammersleys for the amount. I am, sir, etc. etc. etc. A Lister’ – then at 5 3/4  put into the letter bag (to go by John this evening) the above letter to ‘Mr. Robert Walker newspaper-vendor 2 and ones Street Berkeley square, London Post Paid’ and my letter written this morning to ‘Mrs Lawton, Claremont house, Leamington, Warwickshire’ dinner at 6 1/4 – coffee – came upstairs at 7 1/2 – sat talking 1/2 hour – then reading with Adney one of Plumpton Wilsons sermons volume 2 – then had the newspaper – with my aunt from 9 40/.. to 10 5/.. at which hour F 35° - very fine day – hard frost –

Also visited the final resting places of Anne Lister and Ann Walker. It’s a shame they’re not together after being together against all the odds of the time ☹️
Anne Lister is interred at Halifax Minister and her memorial stone was found during renovation works in 2000. They don’t know exactly where she’s buried in the minister, but they know the general location. Apparently there are plans to make a replica of her memorial stone, which as you can see from photo is damaged.
Ann Walker is buried at St Matthews old church, Lightcliffe. She was buried under the pulpit of the church, but the church was was demolished in the 1970’s. The grounds are maintained by an organisation called Friends of the Friendless Churches. There is an official plaque in the church yard but someone has marked the spot where the pulpit would have been ❤️

Marian: It’s past ten o’clock, where have you been? It’s dark out!
Anne: *walking away clearly not giving a shite*
Well, Marian, since you’re so eager to know, I was busy over at light cliffe trying to get my hands into miss walkers tightly knit drawers.

Marian: I- what?
Anne: Which is more than I can say for you!

Saturday 17.. February 1838
7 ½
1 55
fine morning F27° at 7 ¾ and the same at 9 am at which hour breakfast in about (near) an hour A- read a little aloud of vol. 2 Lardners’ Russia – then had people in a/c of Northgate – Mercer glazier paid up in full – Crossley painter paid the whole – Shaw the plasterer came in vain – no order for him – ditto ditto Moorhouse who wanted about £26. did not ask Shaw the sum – then had Schofield the joiner small bill extra of May last for the Stump X Inn – settling took me till 12 –then with A- at luncheon too till one – then had Engine-Holt lately returned from York castle – unfairly sent there by the plotting of his partner Mr. Thomas who wanted to get the business to himself – offered Holt £200 if he would give up – yes! if Thomas would see the concern properly wound up and all the concerns paid – and the partnership was solvent – but Thomas had H- arrested by his (Thomas’) brother for lent money £300 – equally lent to Thomas as to H- but H- the only one arrested – H says they tell him there will still be 15/. in the pound for concerns – they seem to have behaved very kindly to H- he tells me Thomas had charged me in the books about £20 for plans etc – as H- own he never knew such a thing done – no! nor I – said I would never pay it – I owned them nothing – ordered no plans – as for H-‘s plan of the mill near Keighley, it was H-‘s own volunteering – I considered that a thing of his own – he said he would bring it – I never ordered it – I merely said I should be much obliged to him, and never him to make any charge – but I thought of giving him something sometime for his trouble – spoke to him now about the engine which the assignees had to sell – wanted H-‘s estimate of what he would set it up for, if I bought it but if I found they thought of pressing in anyway unfairly on me, I would have nothing do to with it – poor fellow he said everybody had been very kind to him, and he did not fear – he had done the best he could and his creditors were satisfied – when he left home he had only 3/. or rather when they took him off his wife had but 3/. in the house and she gave him 2/. of it – but two of his creditors had given him 2/. and 5/. and thus he set off – Joseph Mann (and he should always respect him for it) had lent his (H-‘s) wife a sovereign – after talking above ½ hour partly in the hall (while A- had William Pearson of L-..... near Lightcliffe) and then in the upper kitchen – gave H- a sovereign and came away – he is to come on Tuesday evening to tell me about the Engine – I said if I could not buy it worthwhile I would have nothing to do with it – then sat with A- a little – then while she wrote her journal a little while in the west tower and looking over papers – with A- and then again had her for a few minutes before she rode off about 3 to Cliff hill – snowy day – began before 10 am and has continued snowing more or less ever since – snowing hard now at 3 ½ pm – then all the afternoon (out a minute or 2 in the barn about 4) till 7 looking over and assorting all Mr. Harper’s letters and those of Messrs. Parker and Adam then had Crook the bell-hanger in a/c of Northgate – gave him check for £40 – will want about £20 more when the Casino is done – dinner at 7 ½ and sat reading the newspaper till 9 – then came upstairs and till 12 10 read over H-‘s letters and copied very small and close on one sheet all his 7 papers respecting the Listerwick water wheel – snowy day – F27° at 9 ¾ pm found my cousin come tonight
The Manns did not come this evening – too busy tubbing Listerwick pit

1835 March Thursday 19 part 1
7 10/..
10 55/..
no kiss ready in an hour fine morning F 44°. at 8 1/2 a.m. at which hour breakfast till 9 3/4 – read (till 10) from page 278 to 288 (read from page 270 to 278 yesterday) Parnell on roads – then with my aunt above 1/4 hour (better this morning) – then with my father and Marian till Throp’s son came at 11 3/4 to say he and his man had done planting in lower brea wood a 100 young oaks from Throp’s put in this morning – with Throp from 11 3/4 to 12 3/4  - then came home and found Washington who had brought a section of the intended water wheel and water drift – asked him for his valuation of Wellroyde and the Stag’s head Mytholm – mentioned the applications of Jonathan Mallinson and James Smith for the Mytholm farm land – Washington said 30/. per DW. were enough for the Mytholm brows - I made no answer – asked what could be done with Carr about the dam – nothing said Sam Washington and agreed with me the only way was to send Carr notice to quit, and do the dam next spring - I could very well put 2 acres to the dam – we walked over the new site of Engine pit and drift, and he made no objection – thought the present plan would do very well – would make no difference as to dam and level - the drift would always stand full of water - it must be worked with great care, and done by a working level 3 yards long – Charles Howarth senior could make it - Dam-embankment at this end would be 6feet high - to stand 4 deep of water, and draw off by a sluice to 2feet deep of water – Samuel Washington going to a Lightcliffe town’s meeting at the Poor house (called Bottom hall) and left him at Hannah Green’s door and turned in to see her about 2 or after – after much talk irrelevant as usual it turned out that Aquilla often asked if I had called and would have been dissatisfied if I had let the land without his knowing more about it! – said he might call again about it if he chose – could not conveniently come before Sunday – very well, I would not decide anything before then - I mentioned the plan of dividing between James Smith and Jonathan Mallinson - she told me I had not let to John Mallinson because he was a yellow – wanted to beg for Dewhirst to stay at Mytholm house and said Mr Wiliam Priestley and Mr Bateman were coming to me to beg for him - I said they would do as they liked but if all Lightcliffe came it would make no difference - I had passed my word and I should stand by it – However poor Hannah herself could not in the end say much against my resolve or for Dewhirst’s character about this girl he goes after but with no intention of marrying -
