I think kids are born inherently good. If we form an attachment with them, if we really connect with them regularly, then they feel loved, secure and good in themselves. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Unfortunately, anytime we try to control our kids, they may rebel --subtly or dramatically. They are programmed to respond to us and our moods. So if we are harsh or sound "mean" to them they will act out. But if we can come at them from a place of love and calm then it is much easier to work together as a team. We need to be their calm when they are chaotic.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ By the same token, one of the best things you can do to have a well behaved child is to figure out why they are misbehaving in the first place. Look at what is happening for them that might be causing them to act out. Are they having trouble at school? Perhaps there is something happening in the family. Acting out is their way of solving a problem that they don't have the skills to solve on their own. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ One of the biggest issues for them is inconsistency. When one day they ask for an ice cream for example and you hand them one, but another day you yell at them that it's not time or it's bad for them, they don't understand. That makes them feel less safe and certain in their world.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Consistency in behavior is much more likely when you are consistent as a parent. They need to feel safe, and to feel safe means knowing what reaction they can expect. Rules and boundaries that stick--and that come from a place of calm--make them feel secure. Let's face it, hearing our kids cry makes us uncomfortable and anxious. When they are infants we are wired to automatically go to them and soothe them and we try to suss out why they are crying. But as they get older, that instinct diminishes a bit.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ We still run to our toddlers but we tend to ask what's wrong--and they may not know. Crying is one of the main ways they process emotion--any emotion. .So when we ask what's wrong, they may not be able to tell us. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ And telling them to just stop crying not only doesn't work, but it makes them feel disconnected and not heard. In fact, often it just makes them cry louder in frustration.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ As parents, its our job to support our children and teach them how to self soothe and regulate. We can do that by connecting with them and showing compassion and empathy--and helping them determine what their emotions are.
