Memoirs of an Angel from BrownPolar on Vimeo.
Twenty years after his untimely death, Krzysztof Kieslowski, the undisputed master of modern cinema, remains in our minds as strong as ever, through an impressive portfolio of films that are widely considered as benchmarks of cinematic excellence. At film schools and societies and in libraries and private collections worldwide, his achievements continue to be a boundless source of inspiration and education for generations of cineastes.
Kieslowski’s movies are always about ordinary people, who are searching for a meaning to life. What is most striking about these portrayals though is that they become instantly and effortlessly familiar and relatable, an astonishing feat which is achieved through meticulous attention to detail in script development and painstaking craftsmanship in set design, so that the resulting audiovisual atmosphere conveys more about a character than the performance alone. Every shot in a film by Kieslowski is an exquisitely conceived exploration of light and shade, colour and texture, and of sound and silence, a rich tapestry of symbolism, depth and meaning that arrests and compels an audience to think. It is a unique and exemplary, cinematic language that derives from an enduring collaboration with his close associates such as Krzysztof Piesiewicz, Jacek Petrycki, Agnieszka Holland, Krzysztof Zanussi, Edward Zebrowski, Slawomir Idziak and Zbigniew Preisner. Ingeniously, Kieslowski never used Preisner’s spellbinding music just as a supplement, but rather as a thematically contrived character, much an integral part of the narrative to underpin the emotional resonance of a story.
Published on the twentieth anniversary of Kieslowski’s death (13.03.1996), this heartfelt tribute to our favourite director profiles his life and accomplishments, using excerpts from interviews, workshops and some unforgettable movements from his movies.
To appreciate what modern cinema should be, you need to see at least one film by Kieslowski, and here is how:
