Why you should watch "Ku'damm 56 - The Musical"

I promise it's good!!! My friends and me liked it so much that we saw it live several times. There are people that went there over 80 times. There is a pro-shot that you can watch for free (here)!

Why you might like it:

The music is really good. It's mostly rock with some other genres mixes in. They don't have an orchestra but a rock band instead

The main character is a well written young woman defying the society of West-Berlin in the 1950s

One of the characters is gay and the musical in general has very queer vibes. (That might be because two of the creators are gay men)

It's pretty funny with a very German sense of humour. Very dry. Also a lot of weird sayings.

It's dark but with a hopeful message at the end

The costumes, set and lighting are very creative and good, as well as the choreography.

The actors are fantastic and the characters all have a lot of depth. They're all incredibly complex.

If you like Tanz der Vampire or Elisabeth, you might also like this. It also kind of has Hamilton and SIX vibes.

Why this might not be something for you:

It's in German. (I'm working on a translation English subtitles can be found here)

It contains graphic depictions of: rape, domestic violence, sex, suicide attempts, conversion therapy, misogyny, homophobia

It contains discussions of: all of the above, abortion, the holocaust, war, trauma, infedelity, depression, suicide

One of the characters is a rapist who is portrayed kind of sympathetically. I think his whole plot-line is kind of problematic. Also, basically everyone is morally grey in this. I mean, almost all of the older characters were Nazis...

All of this said: this musical was advertised as something for the whole family and it manages to balance lighter and heavier subjects very well. Weirdly, it really captures the spirit of a lot of Germans, especially people from Berlin.

I'm probably going to make another post later where I'll talk more about the plot and the characters.

I had no idea that they actually filmed the musical of Ku'damm 56 and that it is available to stream for free until September 2025. Definitely need to put this on my watch list.

Ku'damm 56 really could have done a perfectly fine enemies to lovers storyline and instead they went with excusing rape.

I went to see Ku'Damm 56 today, mainly because I love musicals, was visiting Berlin and I watched it without any previous knowledge of the show.

Hindert sie erst am Rausspringen aus dem fahrenden Zug und richtet dann auch gleich noch ihre Strapse. Ganz schön cool und etwas frech.

Wäre aber schon auch recht unfreundlich sich vor der Hochzeit seiner Schwester auf die Gleise zu werfen.

Die gute Frau scheint nicht die höchste Meinung von ihrem Sohn zu haben. Klingt fast so, als ob sie froh ist, ihn los zu sein.

Der Möchtegern-James Dean ist nicht nett. Ich habe ja gehofft, dass sie ihm den Kaffee anleert und ihm danach die Kanne über den Scheitel zieht. Aber dafür ist das wohl der falsche Film.

Na, immerhin glaubt ihr die Mutter. Oder auch nicht.

Wieso bis zum Ende des Abends warten? Stech ihm das Messer gleich am Anfang zwischen die Rippen. Das spart Zeit.

Oh, jetzt ist mir auch eingefallen, woher ich Joachim kenne. Dachte doch, dass mir die Wangenknochen bekannt vor kommen. Das ist ein Film, den ich bis jetzt nur über Gifs gesehen habe. Irgendwann muss ich den auch mal suchen.

Die andere macht mit ihrem Arzt auch den Doktor. Da wäre eine arrangierte Ehe einfacher. Müsste sie sich nicht so viel Mühe machen, den Auserwählten von sich zu überzeugen.

Glaubt er wirklich, er könne Monika noch von sich überzeugen, nach dem, was er getan hat?

Immerhin wird sie etwas selbstbewusster.

Die neuen Tanzstile sind der Mutter zu sexy, aber die Töchter drängt sie dazu sich an Männer zu schmeissen.

Jetzt hatte er seinen James Dean Moment. Hatte aber Glück und hat überlebt.

Ist schwul und wird trotzdem eifersüchtig, wenn die Frau in der Fernsehwerbung von jemand anderem geküsst wird. Die hat man gerne.

Hoffentlich ist ihr nur übel von der ganzen Flasche Sekt, die sie alleine getrunken hat.

Ihr Tanzpartner ist recht umtriebig. Aber immerhin weiss sie, dass sie ihn mit anderen teilen muss.

Es war übrigens nicht nur der Sekt.

Das habe ich schon fast gedacht, sie sieht auch ganz anders aus als ihre Schwestern.

Das sie tatsächlich auf den Vorschlag ihrer Mutter eingeht. Aber immerhin hat sie jetzt eine neue Brille. Wie gut, dass die Schauspielerin gleich schlecht sieht.

Die Töchter könnten nicht viel unglücklicher ausschauen, aber die Mutter freut sich, dass beide endlich eine gute Partie gelandet haben.

Jetzt ist er eifersüchtig. Selber hat er immer andere, aber wenn dann plötzlich eines seiner Mädchen einen anderen hat, wird er eifersüchtig.

Das war spannend. Ich bin gespannt, wie's weiter geht. Es sind doch alle Charaktere so interessant, dass man mehr über sie erfahren möchte.

I'm not working on a new fic yet, but I have it on my to do list for next week to look over the ideas I've accumulated and think about what I want to do next!

And I do speak German! My dad is from Germany, his whole family lives there, and I have citizenship. I spent a semester studying in Tübingen! I think of my vocabulary as being fairly rudimentary and I have a lot of anxiety about not speaking it well, but I've been told my accent is good. I'm currently watching Ku'damm '56, partially to try to maintain/expand my German.
