Books of 2023
I was pleased to read lots of books this year! I greatly enjoyed the majority of these - the only one I wouldn't really recommend was Rated M for Mature - and the favourites are bolded. There were quite a lot of others that I didn't end up finishing, which were mostly memoirs of people who I felt interested in but didn't find their writing very compelling, and some second-world fantasy novels that didn't grab me. Most of this year's reading was historical, contemporary, memoirs, or horror: it was only towards the end of the year that I got some fantasy in there, which is funny as I've always thought of myself as a big fantasy fan - if anyone has any queer non-YA fantasy recommendations, I'd love to have them. The most recent new-to-me fantasy I loved was The Sacred Dark series by May Peterson, if that helps!
I was really happy to read Alison Rumfitt, Torrey Peters, Maya Deane, Lee Mandelo, EE Ottoman, and Brandon Taylor for the first time in particular, and look forward to reading more of them in the future; Ducks by Kate Beaton hit hard and stuck with me; Passion and Play is a massively illuminating read for anyone interested in writing intimate scenes in games and made me feel a ton more confident and intentional in doing so; I loved returning to and crying over old favourites Elizabeth Wein and Terry Pratchett after a very long time.

Kristin Peterson (@alteredstatesstudio ) is always exploring and expanding the creative depths of being an artist. She very much enjoys vintage collage work and mixed media. Kristin loves color and things that have a love-worn comfortable feeling-like an old favorite pair of jeans-coffee stained, patched, painted and well loved. She wants her art to project feeling and make people feel good while looking at it. Her style contains vibrance mixed with a little funk, which is sprinkled with discreet sensibility. Small PSA for anyone looking for a fun TV show over the summer:
Trial & Error, Trial & Error, Trial & Error (chanted to the tune of “Murder board! Murder board! Murder board!”)
Tumblr media
It’s a mockumentary southern legal comedy from 2017 that ran for two seasons, then was tragically cancelled too soon. Season one features John Ligthow playing a character that riffs on Michael Peterson/Staircase documentary case (aka, the very odd Durham, NC man who said his wife was struck by an owl, not murdered).
Tumblr media
Season two has Kristin Chenowith as East Peck, SC’s richest resident and accused husband killer Lavinia Peck-Foster:
Tumblr media
It really deserved more seasons!

Gilbert residents in a letter demanded the immediate resignation of Police Chief Michael Soelberg and Mayor Brigette Peterson, citing “negligence and inaction” related to ongoing investigations into the “Gilbert Goons.”
“For four long months, we’ve given you the chance to stand up and be leaders. Instead, you’ve chosen to punish those who’ve come together in anger due to the police’s failure to make our community safe for our teens,” reads the letter posted Tuesday on the Lily Waterfield Facebook page, which has become a beacon for calls of justice for victims of the Goons.
It’s a call to action by Gilbert parents Kristine Brennan and Angela Rogers, who run the Lily Waterfield page, to flood Soelberg and Peterson’s email inboxes with the demand.
An investigation by The Arizona Republic in December found the Gilbert Goons, a gang of mostly affluent teenagers, had engaged in a string of attacks on other teens in the southeast Valley for more than a year. Most attacks occurred in Gilbert. Parents, students and community activists say members of the Goons were involved in the Oct. 28 fatal beating of 16-year-old Preston Lord at a Halloween party in Queen Creek.
Gilbert Police Chief Michael Soelberg has said officers never had connected the attacks because victims did not specifically mention the gang. Victims since have referred to their attackers as being associated with the Goons, according to the department. Gilbert police have opened multiple investigations related to what officials there describe as "teen violence" cases.
Sixteen people have been arrested so far in connection with group attacks on teens in Gilbert, Mesa and Pinal County.
Parents remain unsatisfied that leadership has done enough, claiming police have “turned a blind eye to the kids who continue to pose a threat.”
“Every day that law enforcement chooses to target scared, terrified parents instead of the violent teens terrorizing our youth brings us one day closer to another senseless beating or the next tragedy of a teen murdered,” the letter reads.
Brennan told The Arizona Republic the police department has begun to go after parents for doxing, an act to publish private information about a person as a form of punishment or revenge.
The Republic has not independently verified these claims. Gilbert police cited one resident, accusing the person of publishing the address of someone who had no connection to the Goons cases, according to police records reviewed by the Republic. Other claims of doxing remain, for now, unsubstantiated.
Assistant Chief Jim Bisceglie, who heads the department’s investigations bureau, gave a brief statement at Tuesday’s Town Council meeting. Soelberg did not attend Tuesday's meeting to give the council and public a biweekly update, as he had over the past several months.
Bisceglie addressed the doxing claims, saying one arrest has been made related to the issue, with others pending. He called it irresponsible and said it would not be tolerated by the Gilbert police.
Peterson announced on Jan. 25 she was suspending her re-election campaign and in an internal email to the town vowed to stay in office until the end of her term.
“Step down now, or we’ll make sure our voices are heard even louder,” the last line in the letter reads.
Residents petition the council
A dozen residents attended Gilbert's council meeting wearing orange.
Peterson's announcement that Gilbert's iconic water tower for two days would be lit orange in solidarity with Preston Lord's family and other victims of teen violence was met with applause from residents. This fulfills a request they made in previous meetings. Some residents pleaded for additional days.
Katey McPherson told the council she had reached out to the council about the simmering teen violence in the town in 2023, before Lord's death. Ninety days later, she said she doesn't see a plan to address the ongoing issue.
Brennan, during public comment, pushed back against Peterson's previous comments that she had been unaware of community events for Lord because Brennan had made her aware of the Dec. 27 community march.
"Kindly do the right thing" and resign, she said.

If you don't know what a javelina (pronounced have-a-LEEN-a) is, you shouldn't fear that you are lacking out on an enormous secret. Many people dwelling outdoors the southwest U.S. But the tide might simply be turning thanks to a Tucson actual estate agent who captured a lone javelina hotfooting it at top pace alongside an house advanced by way of cellphone video not too long ago. The short video went on to propel the speeding creature to social media fame overnight, and the clip has since shown up on Twitter amusingly set to tunes from the "Chariots of Fire" theme tune to Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." The dashing javelina even made a cameo appearance in the pages of The new York Times, and was a scorching topic on quite a few Tv information exhibits as nicely. And although the animal does tend to resemble the wild pig that I first turned conversant in while rising up in Arkansas (it even goes by the nicknames "muskhog" and "skunk pig"), I could not have been more incorrect.

FEMTOBER BLOG: Fridays & Franchises
Happy Friday the 13th!
While no woman has directed an installment of the Jason Voorhees saga, there have been a few franchise films that women have helmed, including one featuring Jason's rival Freddy Kruger, Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare, directed by Rachel Talalay.
Perhaps somewhat predictably, Freddy's Dead received poor reception but was a modest box office success, outgrossing its previous installment. The movie was relatively tame in its violence; Talalay instead wanted to focus on more surreal meta humor that the series had begun to stray from. True to its name, Freddy's Dead is the last film in the original Nightmare canon. The next three installments (New Nightmare, Freddy vs. Jason, and its 2010 reboot) all existed in a separate canon from the original franchise. While Freddy's Dead is not necessarily looked on fondly, I personally find it to be a very passable installment in a franchise I otherwise don't really enjoy. The 90s introduced the more acerbic side of humor in horror, so the slapstick goofiness of Freddy's Dead feels like a fitting goodbye to the previous decade.
Tumblr media
The most powerful man in horror currently, Jason Blum, infamously stated in 2018 that "There are not a lot of female directors period, and even less who are inclined to do horror." He's since rightfully walked back on this statement, and while Blumhouse - under its various labels - has produced a fair number of horror films directed by women on streaming and television, theatrical releases of these films are few and far between. Enter Black Christmas (2019) directed by Sophia Takal.
Black Christmas is an interesting beast. On first glance it seems as though there's heavy studio interference. There's virtually no language or blood, and the story seems fractured. How much interference, it's hard to say. Sophia Takal stands by her vision for the film, wanting to make it as feminist as possible for a PG-13 audience. The end result, unfortunately, is underwhelming. Black Christmas ultimately feels like a shadow of its predecessors. While the 2006 remake is also maligned, there's a certain level of insanity that serves the film well in hindsight. The 2019 version often feels less focused on horror and more on identity, a criticism I hate to make about a female-directed film. Black Christmas's negative reception may have helped it fade into obscurity; in addition to being a critical failure it was also a box office bomb. I'm not the biggest fan of Takal's work, and certainly not of Black Christmas, but I think the most important takeaway we can have from this film is that women should be allowed to fail. We do not need an all or nothing approach to intersectional filmmaking. Sometimes things can be bad, and sometimes they can be worse than bad. We persist.
Tumblr media
To date, Black Christmas is the only major theatrically released Blumhouse horror directed by a woman. Of course, this will change in just a few weeks with the release of Five Nights at Freddy's, directed by Emma Tammi. I can't say I'm particularly excited about the content of the film, but the prospect of a highly anticipated studio film directed by a woman is a major milestone. Between FNAF and Barbie, it's a good year for women to be making films, but of course there's always room for more.
My biggest pet peeve with major films directed by women is the passing of the torch to a male director when the first film succeeds financially (see Twilight, Fifty Shades of Grey, To All the Boys I've Loved Before, etc.). Blumhouse is obviously planning on making FNAF a franchise IP, so it would be great to keep the momentum going with Tammi or another woman continuing to lead the series. Fingers crossed!
Tumblr media
If you're interested in any other female-directed franchise horror films, check out the following: •Candyman (2021), directed by Nia DaCosta •See No Evil 2, directed by the Soska Sisters •Critters 3, directed by Kristine Peterson •The Slumber Party Massacre series •The Pet Sematary Series, directed by Mary Lambert •Sorority House Massacre, directed by Carol Frank •The Fear Street Trilogy, directed by Leigh Janiak •V/H/S/94, 99, and 85 •Darlin', directed by Pollyanna MacIntosh •Mirror, Mirror, directed by Marina Sargenti and more!
