Eddie Kohler, Statement of Purpose, University of Washington
This is my second try at my statement of purpose for you twits. I am still working on Anne's piano teacher's advice which is just to sit down and give yourself a time limit and just write. I think Anne's piano teacher is stupid.
I have trouble thinking far into the future so plans are kind of sketchy but tomorrow I want to go to my aerobics p.e.
I also want to have a cat and a grand piano. And everyone should be happy and peaceful and like Shostakovich. But that probably won't happen. not even if you accept me into grad school.
I like your grad school more than all the others because of the skillful use of LaTeX in your course catalog. I mean seriosuly, get a life!!!!!! Computer Modern is for the birds!!!! Hire a graphic designer!!!!!!
Computer science is good because it has two words and I like both of them. I also like "butt" and "futz" but you have no degree in futz butt. I can't go into chemical engineering because the other edward kohler jr is in that and there is a Pauli edward kohler jr exclusion principle. It's bad enough that we're both at MIT at the same time. Sometimes i get stomach cramps thinking about it.
The Coffeehouse is closed. You care.
Please accept me *right now* or I will write another statement of purpose.
love, ed

July 8 (UPI) -- A federal grand jury in Brooklyn has charged two men connected to the Department of Homeland Security on accusations of being involved in a scheme organized by Beijing to spy on and harass pro-democracy activists in the United States.
The Justice Department identified the two men Thursday in a statement as Craig Miller, a 15-year employee with the department who is based in Minnesota, and Derrick Taylor, a retired DHS law enforcement agent currently working as a private investigator in Irvine, Calif.
The grand jury returned the superseding indictment Wednesday charging five people, including the two DHS employees and three others who were previously charged in March on allegations of "perpetrating a transnational repression scheme that targeted U.S. residents whose political views and actions are disfavored by the PRC government," the Justice Department said. The People's Republic of China is the official name of China.
"This case involves a multifaceted campaign to silence, harass, discredit and spy on U.S. residents for exercising their freedom of speech -- aided by a current federal law enforcement officer and a private investigator who provided confidential information about U.S. residents from a restricted law enforcement database, and when confronted about their improper conduct, they lied and destroyed evidence," said U.S. Attorney Breon Peace for the Eastern District of New York.
According to court documents, Qiang "Jason" Sun, 40, of China, directed Fan "Frank" Liu, 62, of Jericho, N.Y., and Matthew Ziburis, 49, of Oyster Bay, N.Y., to discredit pro-democracy Chinese dissidents living in the United States by disseminating negative information about them.
The indictment states unnamed co-conspirators under Liu hired Taylor to obtain personal identification information on multiple Chinese citizens living in the United States. Prosecutors said Taylor then tasked two DHS officers, including Miller, to obtain passport information and photos as well as flight and immigration records on the targets from a restricted database.
On receiving that information, Taylor then shared it with Liu's co-conspirators. That information was then used by Liu, Ziburis and Sun to target and harass the U.S. residents, the court document states.
According to the criminal complaint, Miller and Taylor also lied about their actions to the FBI and attempted to destroy evidence.
Prosecutors accuse Miller of deleting text messages he sent Taylor from his smartphone amid interview with the FBI, while Taylor directed an unnamed co-conspirator to not hand over evidence to the U.S. government.
"When interviewed by the FBI, Taylor falsely claimed that he obtained the records in question from a friend who was using the 'Black Dark Web' -- likely a reference to the dark web," the Justice Department said.
Miller and Taylor have been charged with obstruction of justice while Taylor also faces charges of making a false statement to the FBI.
If convicted Taylor faces up to 25 years' imprisonment while Miller faces up to 20 years' imprisonment.
"Actions taken by the defendants -- two of which are current or former federal law enforcement officers -- demonstrate how the PRC seeks to stalk, intimidate and silence those who oppose it," Assistant Director Alan Kohler Jr. of the FBI's Counterintelligence Division said. "The FBI battles transnational repression because it is an evil in its own right, and an assault on the freedoms of an open society."

Former U.S. military pilot admits to selling aviation information to 🇨🇳 CHINA
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 06/25/2022 - 3:10 PM in Military
Chinese Army Z-20 helicopters, a possible copy of the U.S. Black Hawk.
A former U.S. Army helicopter pilot who became a civilian contractor pleaded guilty in federal court on June 24, admitting that he acted as an unregistered agent from China and accepted thousands of dollars from Chinese government representatives to provide information related to defense contracts.
The pilot also pleaded guilty to making false statements related during national security background checks.
Shapour Moinian, 67, from San Diego, served in the Army in the United States, Germany and South Korea from approximately 1977 to 2000. After his service, Moinian worked for several cleared defense contractors in the United States - including San Diego - as well as the Department of Defense. "Cleared" is a term that indicates that a contractor is allowed to work on projects involving confidential information.
In his confession agreement, while Moinian worked for an authorized defense contractor, or CDC, on several aviation projects used ?? by U.S. military and intelligence agencies, he was contacted by an individual in China who claimed to be working for a technical recruitment company. This person offered Moinian the opportunity to provide advice to the aviation industry in China.
"Moinian was a paid agent of the Chinese government who sold American aviation-related technology," said Assistant Attorney General Matthew G. Olsen, from the National Security Division of the Department of Justice. “The Department of Justice does not tolerate those who help foreign governments violate the law to undermine American competitiveness and innovation.”
"This defendant took the aviation materials from his American employers and sold them to China," U.S. Attorney Randy Grossman told the Southern District of California. "This conduct was an outrageous breach of trust of a former member of the U.S. armed forces. The United States will aggressively investigate and prosecute anyone working under the direction of foreign governments to steal American technology and intellectual property."
"The People's Republic of China remains determined to acquire our information and technology. In this case, we witnessed a former U.S. government official acting as an agent of the Chinese government and the extensive use of social media by Chinese intelligence officers to identify willing targets," said assistant director Alan E. Kohler Jr. Counterintelligence Division. “The FBI is committed not only to leveraging the risk and consequences on the defendant, but also to confronting the behavior and policies of the Chinese government that threaten our national security and freedom.”
"The defendant admitted to being an unregistered agent of a foreign power, lying in his background verification documentation to obtain his security clearance, knowingly providing proprietary information to people controlled by the Chinese government and receiving payments from them willingly. This is another example of how the Chinese government improves its defense capabilities through the illicit exploitation of U.S. technology," said Special Agent in charge Stacey Moy of the FBI field office in San Diego. "When someone has a security authorization, they know what information should be reported to security officers. In this case, the defendant betrayed his sacred oath, knew that his actions were wrong, and subsequently lied about it. The FBI and our Counterintelligence Task Force partners will pursue anyone who abuses their location and access to obtain proprietary information on behalf of a foreign government. I want to specifically thank the Naval Criminal Investigation Service (NCIS) for its ongoing partnership in this case."

Similarities between the Chinese Z-20 (above) and the US Black Hawk (below).
"Sir. Moinian sold information to the Chinese government and repeatedly lied to cover up his crimes," said responsible special agent Michelle Kramer of the NCIS Special Projects Office. "Now he is being held accountable for his actions. NCIS and our partners remain unwavering ?? in our commitment to protect the U.S. military and eradicate crime that threatens the superiority of the U.S. fighter."
In March 2017, Moinian traveled to Hong Kong, where he met with this alleged recruiter and agreed to provide information and materials related to various types of aircraft designed and/or manufactured in the United States in exchange for money. Moinian accepted approximately $7,000 to $10,000 in U.S. currency during this meeting. According to his confession agreement, at this meeting and at all subsequent meetings, Moinian knew that these individuals were employed or directed by the government of the People's Republic of China.
Upon returning to the United States, Moinian began gathering aviation-related materials, including the transfer of material from a CDC to a flash drive. In September 2017, the defendant traveled abroad and, during a layover at Shanghai airport, met with Chinese government officials and provided aviation-related materials on a flash drive, including proprietary information from a CDC. Subsequently, Moinian arranged for the payment of this information through his stepdaughter's South Korean bank account. Moinian told his stepdaughter that these funds were the payment for her consulting work abroad and instructed her to transfer the funds to him in various transactions.
Moinian also received a mobile phone and other equipment from these individuals to communicate with them and assist in the electronic transfer of materials and information.
At the end of March 2018, Moinian traveled to Bali and met again with these same individuals. Later that year, he started working at another CDC. During this period, the same individuals in China transferred thousands of dollars to the South Korean bank account of Moinian's stepdaughter, who subsequently transferred the funds to Moinian in several transactions.
In August 2019, Moinian traveled again to Hong Kong and met with these same individuals, where he again received approximately $22,000 in cash for his services. Moinian and his wife smuggled this money back to the United States.
According to his confession agreement, Moinian also admitted that he lied in his government background questionnaires in July 2017 and March 2020, when he falsely stated that he had no close or continuous contacts with foreigners and that no foreigner offered him a job.
In the sentence, Moinian faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000 for acting as an agent of a foreign government, and up to five years and a fine of $250,000 for counting false statements. The sentence is scheduled for August 29.
This case has been investigated by the FBI and NCIS and is being prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney General's Office for the Southern District of California and the Department of Justice's National Security Division.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Three individuals were arrested following a joint investigation by Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) offices in Louisville, San Diego and San Francisco after a federal indictment was unsealed in the U.S. District Court in the Western District of Kentucky.According to court documents, Phil Pascoe, 60, of Floyds Knobs, Indiana; Monica Pascoe, 45, of Floyds Knobs, Indiana; Scott Tubbs, 59, of Georgetown, Kentucky; and Quadrant Magnetics LLC were charged with wire fraud, violations of the Arms Export Control Act and smuggling of goods for their roles in an illegal scheme to send export-controlled defense-related technical data to China and to unlawfully supply the U.S. Department of Defense with Chinese-origin rare earth magnets for aviation systems and military items. “The HSI Counter-Proliferation Investigations Program is responsible for the enforcement of U.S. import and export laws involving military and defense-related products and sensitive dual-use technology,” said acting Special Agent in Charge Nick Nelson, HSI Nashville. “The indictment is a credit to the collaboration of multiple law enforcement partners, including our special agents in HSI San Diego, San Francisco and Louisville, Kentucky, as well as the complex investigative work involved in protecting the attempted theft of our nation’s military assets and sensitive controlled technology.” The indictment alleges that between January 2012 and December 2018, the defendants conspired to send approximately 70 drawings containing export-controlled technical data to a company located in China without a license from the U.S. government in violation of the Arms Export Control Act and the International Traffic in Arms Regulations. The technical data drawings were the property of two U.S. companies and related to end-use items for aviation, submarine, radar, tank, mortars, missiles, infrared and thermal imaging targeting systems, and fire control systems for DOD. The indictment further alleges that Quadrant Magnetics imported rare earth magnets that were smelted and magnetized by a company in China. Quadrant then sold these magnets to two U.S. companies that included them in components sold to the DOD for use in F-16 Fighting Falcon and F/A-18 Hornet aircraft, as well as other defense assets in violation of the Defense Acquisition Regulations System. Under the DFARS specialty metal clause, rare earth magnets sold to the DOD must be produced and magnetized in the United States or an approved country. China is not an approved country. Arraignments will be scheduled before a U.S. Magistrate Judge in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Kentucky. If convicted, Phil Pascoe, Monica Pascoe and Scott Tubbs face statutory maximum penalties of up to 20 years in prison for each count of wire fraud; 20 years in prison for each count of exporting technical data without a license; and 10 years in prison for smuggling goods from the United States. Monica Pascoe and her codefendants face a penalty of up to five years for conspiracy to defraud the United States. A federal district court judge will determine their sentences after considering the U.S. Federal Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors. Assistant Attorney General Matthew G. Olsen of the Justice Department’s National Security Division, U.S. Attorney Michael A. Bennett for the Western District of Kentucky, Assistant Director Alan E. Kohler Jr. of the FBI Counterintelligence Division and Special Agent in Charge Jodi Cohen of the FBI Louisville Field Office made the announcement. The Defense Criminal Investigative Service, FBI, IRS-Criminal Investigation, the Naval Criminal Investigative Service, and the Department of Energy’s Office of Inspector General are also investigating the case. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Joshua Judd and Christopher Tieke for the Western District of Kentucky and Trial Attorneys David Recker and Liz Abraham with the National Security Division’s Counterintelligence and Export Control Section are prosecuting the case.
An indictment is merely an allegation, and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
