Buy now pay later service is driving many fintech companies into the world of credit offering and installment payments. Young consumers are attracted to BNPL because it provides easy loans with few barriers. The major reasons consumers opting these services are the inability to pay the full price of a product or service, budgeting, and avoiding interest charges or fees. BNPL is a better form of credit than credit cards, resulting in hidden fees, penalties, and compounding interest.
In addition to major players in the BNPL market such as AfterPay, Affirm, Klarna, LazyPay, Simpl, ZestMoney, and PayPal, many new companies are entering this space. For instance,
Apple, the world's second-largest smartphone manufacturer, has announced its plan to enter into BNPL space in June 2022. With this new Apple Pay Later service, the company is expanding its financial services, including credit cards and mobile payments to BNPL. Apple Pay Later allows users to pay for products in four equal installments monthly without interest. As per industry experts, key competitors in the BNPL space such as PayPal, Affirm, and Klarna are in trouble with the new entrant.
National Australia Bank (NAB) launched NAB now pay later service in May 2022. This service allows users to access up to US$ 695 and split payments into four installments wherever a visa is accepted. NAB now pays later services and offers no late fees, account fees, and interest. This service can be integrated into the NAB app, allowing customers to add this service to their digital wallets as a virtual card for online or in-person payments. NAB is the last bank of the big four that introduced some versions of BNPL.
Rite Aid, an American retail pharmacy chain, has partnered with BNPL payment platform AfterPay to provide its customers an easy way to purchase products and pay in four installments without additional cost when paid on time. Rite Aid is planning to launch its BNPL offering to online customers at its e-commerce site, and it will roll out this flexible payment option in stores in the coming months.
To sustain the competition from new entrants into the BNPL market, existing market players are expanding their offerings by partnering with other platforms. For instance, BNPL provider Affirm has partnered with Singapore's online travel agency Agoda to provide BNPL options for approved travelers. Travelers can book hotels costing more than US$ 50 on the Agoda platform and make interest-free payments every fortnight or once a month through Affirm's checkout. As traveling has become normal, like pre-covid level, the travelers are now seeking flexible options to pay for trips over a time instead of a lump sum amount.
According to PayNXT360’s Global BNPL Consumer Survey (Q2 2022), around 47% of young consumers in the age bracket of 25-34 years in India and 67% in the United States are early adopters of BNPL services. Furthermore, the Australian BNPL space is flocked by more than 71% of millennials. Based on the statistics, it is evident that most young consumers are using BNPL services worldwide. The dominating segments include fashion, electrical goods, household appliances, and furniture. Increasing smartphone penetration, rising adoption of social media among millennials and influencers partnering with BNPL companies are also driving growth opportunities for the BNPL market in coming years.

I make too much money to still be broke.
The first step to recovery is realizing you have a problem in the first place.
I make a US$66,000 salary, which is pretty decent for where I live. I saved $7,000 to move to a new state, rent a one-bedroom apartment and live alone for the first time. (I’ve always relied on living with other people to help pay the rent, but during this “anything goes” COVID situation in the US I realized it’d be better for my mental health to finally move out on my own.) 
When I moved into this apartment in May, I told myself that minimalism would help me stay on-budget. With that in mind, I splurged on the essential things that I knew would make me feel more at home and establish new routines — nice new cookware, a Fellow digital kettle, a Thuma bed frame that Instagram convinced me I needed...and because I was coming from San Francisco, where the cost of living is completely insane and nothing is reasonably priced, suddenly I could afford anything I wanted with no problem! I adopted a rescue cat, installed bookshelves, bought my first “smart home” thing (an Alexa Dot speaker) and some Philips Hue smart lights I could control with my voice. Fancy! Oh, wait...wasn’t I supposed to be “minimalist?”
Please note, my dear, probably nonexistent reader, that it doesn’t end there. As I began to fill out my apartment, every new addition inspired another. I have a smart home assistant now, so shouldn’t I have more than one Smart Thing to connect it to? I bought a smart TV. But my apartment is a bit small, so I should hang the TV on the wall to save space! I bought a TV mount. Oh, and my Redbubble side business will be easier to launch if I have a scanner...but here’s a scanner-printer combo that’s also Alexa-capable! Obviously that’s the more optimized choice. But now I need a place to put it...time to install more shelves! While I’m at it, I’m working full-time and going back to school next month, so I should put some effort into getting organized...time to hit up Container Store? All the while, I continued to voraciously consume the local pillow market. Bed pillows, throw pillows, floor pillows, body pillows...so many pillows! So much comfort!
This is my problem. That $7,000 ran out months ago. The phrase “I should look at my budget” only enters my brain the day before payday, and no other day. I paid for the essential furniture with my debit card using money I already had, but by the time I got to the “throw pillow” circle of hell, I was using “buy now pay later” services like Klarna and Affirm. On pillows. Pillows! I realized my TV was purchased through a lease-to-own business for twice its value over a week after it had been delivered to my home. 
For the amount of money that I earn, I shouldn’t even need to think about these sorts of services. Back when I was actually struggling I used my upbringing as an excuse for why I’m living paycheck to paycheck; my mom wasn’t great with money either, and she didn’t like her “little girl” going outside on her own, so I wasn’t allowed to get a job in my teens. She died when I was still in high school, and I was wholly unprepared to fend for myself or participate in the economy. I wallowed in a painful period of underemployment, couchsurfing, and struggling to put myself through college, but I “picked myself up by my bootstraps” as well as I could, eventually dropping out of college to take an internship that turned into a lucrative job. As soon as I was getting paid enough to furnish the comforts I never had as a child, I dove right into late-stage capitalism and never looked back.
At 30 years old, that look back is way overdue. I’m going back to school — which costs money. I have a (cat) son now and would love to adopt a dog soon, both of whom will costs lots of money to keep healthy and happy. I have a therapist, who is worth every penny, but good god does she cost money. I don’t buy things I don’t value, or keep things I don’t use; I can look around my apartment and tell you what everything cost me and why I have it. I spent so much of my energy in COVID making this place as perfect, as functional, as OpTiMiZeD as possible, and I regret nothing! 
That’s the problem. All of this stuff is necessary, sure, but the timing wasn’t. I needed a printer a month from now, so why did I overdraft my debit card to get it last week? Why did I agree to adopt the cat without at least some savings to back me up in case of an emergency? I mean, shit...what about my own health? I am lucky enough to have a health savings account...with nothing in it, because I keep withdrawing money. Why do I feel such an urgent need every payday to drive my account balance back to zero in the name of “optimization?” Spending all of my money on Friday makes it impossible for me to be in my friends’ lives the next Wednesday. What’s more, I need to save money for a computer this year, and I want to buy a car next year. If I logically understand why I should save my money, why can’t I do it? What is keeping me in this ongoing loop of “optimizing” my space when saving would help me optimize my life and overall happiness?
I started this blog to chronicle my journey through compulsive shopping, retail therapy, and overspending in hopes that I can find other people who have started from the bottom of financial literacy, like me, and lived to tell the tale. In plenty of time: the need for slower supply chains
There are shortages of lots of things at the moment: shipping and freight, computer chips (with a knock-on effect on cars and other products now that chips are in everything), oil and petrol (thanks to hackers), rare earth metals (used in chips and batteries). And so on. And the flow of goods is slower (covid and brexit).
For over 50 years the world has been optimised for the speedy, predictable and efficient delivery of cheaper products. But the world is becoming less predictable. So maybe *optimising* is the wrong approach for the future - because just in time may end up looking like just about to break. Maybe supply chains need to run slower and fatter: more slack, more give in the systems, more resilience. More spare parts in the inventory, more stock on the shelves and on the balance sheet: demand for warehouse space surges in the UK. 
Walmart losing ground
Walmart says its grocery business is "rapidly" losing ground to competitors. A leaked memo outlines that it’s getting ever harder to stay on top. It’s not a surprise that discounters have grown faster, and that Amazon is catching up in general retail. But Instacart approaching parity with Walmart in online grocery is notable.
Again, the background is an unpredictable world - the pace of change is higher, driven by technology, capital, the virus and looming in the background climate. 2PM reckons that Walmart needs to invest in winning and retaining customers for Walmart+ (an unlimited free delivery membership programme a bit like Prime). And empower stores and staff “to be able to fulfill these orders, giving customers more options and better service. A lack of investment in its store employees, many of whom don’t receive benefits and rely on erratic scheduling, would sink Walmart’s subscription strategy”. 
Two thoughts: 
Could supporting unionisation offer a valuable difference, one that Amazon couldn’t stomach? 
Should Walmart buy Fedex to build out its logistics infrastructure, before someone online like Shopify does?
Elsewhere: New 'Russian Lidl' supermarket to open in Yorkshire. Mere (the European brand for Svetofor) says it will be the cheapest supermarket in the country.
Rapid grocery delivery
US rapid grocery delivery co Gopuff is buying the UK’s Fancy. Others in the UK: Getir, Gorillas, Dija, Weezy, Zapp. Eventually one or two of these may get enough scale to consolidate.
Southern Co-op extends Snappy Shopper home deliveries to new areas - Co-operative News. The retailer has filled nearly 10,000 orders through the partnership. (Related: Sainsbury's ex-boss invested in Snappy Shopper recently.)
Amazon expands in-garage delivery service - this piece is also a decent summary of the state of in-home/in-garage grocery delivery by others like Walmart.
Buy Now Pay Later says it increases order value 85%
“When retailers remove price as a barrier, everybody wins. That’s why businesses that offer Affirm’s pay-over-time solutions see an 85% increase in average order value and a 20% lift in repeat purchasing on average.” 
That’s from an advert by Affirm, a “buy now pay later” financing company. The general model for financing used to be lending - charge the consumer an interest rate. The new general model of retail financing reverses that. Now a BNPL company like Klarna, AfterPay or Affirm will make a 0% loan to the consumer, and charge a fee to the retailer because, unlike Some Bank’s credit card, BNPL is a payment channel that can increase sales value and volume.
The other key innovation seems to be having enough data that you can pre-approve customers in the shopping basket checkout itself, accepted with a click. The shopper can try the goods at home before the first payment is taken. Not all is rosy with BNPL of course - you can see that it could amplify problem debt.

A step ahead of the rest: Hand Dyed Shoe Company claims crown in Klarna’s ‘Smoooth Stores’ competition
With entries received from all over the UK, a visit from Hugo Taylor and a competitive voting period which saw over 5,000 votes cast by the public, The Hand Dyed Shoe Co. was crowned the winner of Klarna’s ‘Smoooth Stores’ initiative at last night’s star-studded awards.
‘Smoooth Stores’ – launched by Klarna to discover and develop top retail talent across the UK – has named Simon Bourne and his experiential shoe making business from Durham the overall winner. He’ll receive £10,000 alongside mentoring from senior Klarna executives , and free use of Klarna’s Pay later service for 12 months.
The Hand Dyed Shoe Co, which creates handmade footwear from scrap leather in the furniture industry, has always done things a bit differently. Founder Simon claims his mission is to change the way the world buys shoes, offering a unique experience and service through all the touch points of the business. His approach has grown alongside the business, and started with free shoe-shining lessons, fresh coffee, and local gin for G&Ts.
With experiences offered in Durham, Dubai and London – the company has focused on putting customer experience, as well as workplace culture front and centre of its brand.
Special commendations have also been given to runners-up Britannical, the luxury children’s outerwear brand who came in second place, Charlotte Jade in third place, who offer hand drawn plant, floral and animal themed designs for wallpaper, upholstery and tiles. The pair have been awarded a £5,000 cash prize.
