worse

It was the sixth playoff game in the first series and Penguins have won two so far. Kensington was having some great games in the games so far.

Kensington asked her family not to come out for the first round and come out if that make it two the second and her friends were all busy with the school year ending soon they couldn’t join anyways.

It was halfway through the third period and the teams were tied 2-2 and Kensington had just scored the last goal tying them back up during her last shift.

She looked up as she took the pass from Sidney when she suddenly felt the other team player slam into her but more importantly they slammed into her bad knee, she quickly crumpled to the floor and instantly she was groaning out in excruciating pain, it was completely worse than the first time it was injured.

Kensington was on her side and curled in to a little ball, holding her knee to her chest, whimpering out in pain as she felt so much pain in her knee, more than she has the whole time it’s been injured.

Sidney and Braden both quickly rushed over to her as well the penguins trainers, everyone on the team knows about her injury and they can see her holding her bad knee.

Kensington looked up with teary eyes and shook her head, she knew she wouldn’t be playing any longer.

The trainer had Sideny and Braden help her up again and she had all her weight on her good leg, her bad knee not even close to touching the ice. She wrapped her arms around the two and they both wrapped an arm around her back helping her stand.

They slowly helped her get of the ice and down the tunnel. Luckily they were playing at home so they had there full medical staff, Kensington was helped down the tunnel and in to a medical room and in to the medical bed.

Sidney and Braden both wanted to stay and be by her side, “Go, go win the game.” Kensington croaked out barely being able to open her eyes from how much pain she was in.

They didn’t win the game and the Penguins were out from the playoffs.

Kensington had gotten helped changed out of her uniform and equipment and they took her into the MRI, the medical team shared a uneasy look seeing how bad the knee had gotten from that hit, they knew surgery was now needed and as soon as possible.

Kensington was staring at the celling devastated as she knew her knee was worse she could feel how bad it was and she had just gotten out of the playoffs for the first time.

She looked up as the door opened and the doctors walked in with hesitant looks on their faces and Kensington felt dread fill her stomach as she knew something was bad, something bad with her knee.

“Tell me.” Kensington politely demanded she wanted to get it over with, she knew nothing good would be coming from them and she prepared for the worst.

“Your tear is still there and it has gotten worse, but you also damaged more in your knee. Kensington you have a grade 3 tear in your ACL and MCL. You’ll need surgery as soon as possible.” The doctor gravely told her.

“How long will i be out.” Kensington desperately questioned as she realized she know how three different tears in her one knee.

“At least four months up to six months depending on how it heals.” The other doctor sadly told her, “We can schedule your surgery for tomorrow morning we just need your consent.”

“Do it.” Kensington quickly agreed knowing the sooner she gets the surgery the sooner she can heal up.

The doctors left the room giving her some space.

One of the team members had gotten her personal items and brought her to Kensington, she grabbed her phone and saw hundreds of texts and she knew everyone saw her fall and were definitely texting her very worried.

She ignored everything and clicked on her mom’s contact, for the first in months she was calling someone else and not declining someone else’s call or face time, she held the phone up to her ear waiting for her mom to answer.

“Sunny!” Ellen quickly answered the phone and had four pairs of eyes on her all just as worried for Kensington.

Jack, Luke, Jim, Quinn and Ellen were all at home in Michigan watching her game together and had been worried like crazy since they saw her fall and get helped off the ice.

“Mama.” Kensington felt herself tear up at her mom’s voice, “I really need you to come here.” Kensington knew she couldn’t hide this any longer and she needed her family.

“Of course we will be out as soon as possible.” Ellen quickly assured just wanting to see her daughter, “Sunshine are you okay?” Ellen heard the wavering in her daughter’s voice.

“No. No I’m not okay.” Kensington whispered out, she hadn’t been okay in along time, “I’m getting surgery tomorrow.”

“Oh my sunshine.” Ellen covered her mouth knowing it has to be bad to get a surgery that quick, “We will be there okay.” Ellen reassured her.

“Thank you Mama.” Kensington sniffed blinking her eyes to keep her tears in.

“And uh could you tell Will please.” Kensington whispered softly she knew she needed Will just as much even if she felt like she didn’t deserve to ask for him to come with how she’s been treating him.

“I will.” Ellen hummed she knew she would tell Will, Ryan and Gabe and they all would be coming out as well, “I’ll see you tomorrow my sunshine i love you.”

“I love you too mom.” Kensington whispered back.

proud little sister

Jack ran a stressed hand through his hair sitting on his bed in his apartment all alone in New Jersey. He had just lost the game to the panthers 5-3 tonight and despite scoring a goal he didn’t feel anyone better.

He heard his phone ringing and looked at the contact seeing a photo of him and his little sister smiling at the camera, he felt him self relax slight and picked up the phone, He smiled very softly at the facetime seeing his baby sister who seemed to never stop growing up.

“Hi sunny.” Jack grinned slighty at his baby sister.

“Jacky!” A fourteen year old Kensington happily grinned at her older brother, “Your goal was amazing!” Kensington proudly smiled at her big brother.

“Sunny we lost.” Jack muttered looking at his fingers not seeing how his goal could be that amazing.

Kensington face shifted into a more serious look, “Jack what do you tell me after every goal get.” Kensington raised an eyebrow towards the screen as Jack lifted his head to look at his sister.

“Good job?” Jack uncertainly anwsered.

“Basically, sometimes different words but Jack you compliment my goals whether or not i lost or if i had a shit game. The point is Jack you scored a goal and you didn’t have a bad game, your whole team didn’t play the best and you played a team who is at their best. And i’m proud of you. Whether you score every game or play on the ice only one shift, your my brother you can’t do anything to make me less proud of you.” Kensington passionately spoke to her brother whose eyes were filled with tears seeing his baby sister speak to him.

“Language.” Jack emotionally croaked out wiping the tears from the corner of his eye.

“You sounded just like Quinny.” Kensington sassed her brother with a sweet smile.

“The horror!” Jack playfully gasped making his sister throw her head back laughing, Jack watched her with a find smile before her laughs slowly died down, “Thank you sunny.” Jack sent a smile needing her words more than ever.

“Always big brother.” Kensington promised with her sweet smile, “Now go get some sleep you’re starting to look like Quinny with those eye bags.” Kensington giggled to herself.

“Hey!” Jack playfully scoffed, before softening, “We didn’t get to talk about your day though.” Jack frowned having not talked to her on the phone the last few days and missed her telling him about her day.

“That’s alright, we’ll talk later but you need some serious rest Jacky.” Kensington smiled at her brother who looks exhausted.

“Alright we’ll talk later, goodnight Sunny, I love you.” Jack smiled softly at his baby sister.

“I love you too.” Kensington brightly smiled at the camera before waving bye to her brother.

introducing kensington

Kensington Grace Hughes was born July 3, 2005, making her the baby of her family.

From a very young age is was clear she had a natural ability in Hockey, She skated with an incredible speed and elegance that not many players had, Kensington has always seemed to have an ability to always be able get the puck into the net, from any angle, any distance, she could get the puck in just as easy from behind the net.

It was no surpise when she was one of the first picks of the 2023 NHL Draft, going second to the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Kensington was accepted into Boston College, University of Michigan, University of Massachusetts Amherst, Princeton University, Harvard University, University of Wisconsin. Kensington didn’t want to go somewhere because her brothers went there she wanted to pick the school she wanted to play at, and it happened to be Boston College, she fell in love with the collage when she went there for the first time.

Kensington played two seasons with the USA Hockey National Team Development Program, breaking Jack’s record of all time points.

Kensington has always had a passion for music, loving anything to do with music and extremely enjoying how to learn new instruments. She’s a very great singer and if Hockey wasn’t her main passion she would’ve choose to have a career in music.

Kensington has always been a very sweet person, very caring and kindhearted, gaining the nickname Sunshine from her brothers when she was young and something that’s always stuck.

Kensington was known for being incredibly sweet but that doesn’t mean she always sweet like when she is on the ice. With three brothers of course they made sure she could fight, which is something she doesn’t usually do as she faster than most players in the ice and has no need to get into a fight.

Kensington has enjoyed fashion from a young age, something she shared with her mother Ellen, and then her brother Jack. At first Jack didn’t really care for shopping or anything fashion but he loves spending time with his little sister and mother so he grew to something he loved as well.

Kensington and Luke have a pretty close relationship having spent the most time together, especially with Jack and Quinn leaving home and Kensington and Luke still both being at home.

When Luke went to Michigan he was only a few minute drive from home and saw Kensington a lot especially because the USNTDP is based in Michigan as well, they could go to each other’s games pretty often. Luke ends knowing a lot more things going on in Kensington’s life then their other two brothers by having seeing her more often, Like Luke knows Kensington has feelings for Will Smith before she even realizes then herself.

Quinn and Kensington are very close and Quinn is definitely the one Kensington always goes to for advice most of them or just needing to be calmed down. Quinn tries to watch as much of her games as he can and if he is ever near by he tries to go see her play. Kensington always looked up the most to her oldest brother Quinn.

Jack has adored his sister from the moment he held her, his little best friend and his all time favorite person in the whole world, he’s very soft and sweet with his sister. His little sunshine has always been wrapped right around his fingers and everyone who knew Jack automatically knew who Kensington was as Jack is always bragging about his baby sister.

The three boys all absolutely adore their little sister, Quinn and Luke wanted a little brother but Jack hoped for a little sister and he was definitely the most excited for a sister, he even picked out her middle name Grace.

The three are all very protective of their little sister but also know to let her fight her own battles sometimes, but that doesn’t mean they wouldn’t do anything for her.

It was the USNTDP where she met the rest of her best friends Ryan Leonard and Will Smith. Kensington had joined the team with her best friend Gabe Perreault, the two met Ryan and Will and the four quickly all became best friends.

When Kensington was drafted to the Penguins within 24-hours she got a text or call from every player on the team, who all were very accepting of having a girl join their team soon.

The Penguins team all quickly grew to adore Kensington and by her first season playing they were very protective of their baby penguin, and other teams quickly learned not to touch her.

Sideny Crosby who is always keeping eye on kids in hockey leagues, had kept an eye on Kensington Hughes for awhile and was very hopeful she would get into the NHL, he was the first one to call her to congratulate her from the team. He took her under his wing and offered for her to stay with him and his girlfriend Kathy, during training camp.

Once Kensington moved to Pittsburgh for her first season, she got an apartment near Sidney and Kathy, the two always inviting her over for dinner and keeping an eye on her.

Evgeni Malkin and his wife Anna love Kensington, if she isn’t at Sidney house she usually at theirs. Their son Nikita adores Kensington and is always extremely excited to see her. The family started teaching her Russian.

wanted to win

April 13, 2024

Kensington felt her heart drop even further once the buzzer finally rung, meaning that Boston College had officially lost the national championship to Denver University.

She felt her stomach just drop and felt like she suddenly couldn’t stand on her own two feet. She shakily kneeled down on the ice letting out an extremely shaky breath and could feel the tears in her eyes.

Kensington had officially played her last game for Boston College and her last game with all of her best friends and no one even knew but her and her family. She hopped that a day or two after the game if they won that she could tell everyone and it wouldn’t be so bad because they would be on a high after the win but now she knew now, it would be devastating.

Cutter stumbled a few steps over to Kensington and kneeled down in front of her, He looked at her with a nauseating look on his face and felt his jaw trembling making him clench his jaw, he leaned his forehead on her shoulder taking a deep breath.

Kensington leaned her head on top of his helmet letting a few tears drip down her face as she also knew Cutter was leaving.

“You’re leaving aren’t you.” Cutter whispered having a suspicion for awhile, he’s known her for years now and with how much she was sneaking off to talk to her agent and how guilty she looked when the topic of next season came up, he knew.

Kensington’s shuttering breath was the answer to his question.

Kensington slowly stood up and put a hand down for Cutter, he stood up for her and she turned about seeing Gabe, Will and Ryan walking over to them.

Kensington felt her eyes tearing up even more as she saw her three boys and she quickly pulled them into a hug making the three all wrapped their arms around her.

Ryan hid his face against his best friend’s head and sniffled desperately, Gabe leaned his head onto Ryan’s looking extremely out of it. Will just hid his face in his girlfriend’s neck grabbing onto her hand and holding it like it’s his lifeline.

Kensington didn’t know how she was going to break their hearts even more when she tells them she is leaving.

Kensington, Ryan, Gabe and Will all reluctantly let go of each other and stumbled slowly off the ice and down the tunnel, into the locker room.

Kensington slowly sat down onto her stall, feeling robotic as she slowly started taking off her equipment. Her brain was so fogged that all the words from the coaches and Eamon just didn’t even register, she kept her eyes downcast on the floor of the locker room.

Kensington was the last to get up and start stumbling to the showers, she didn’t know how long she stood under the burning hot water but long enough to not see anyone left in the locker room when she finally came out.

She looked at her stall once more and gently traced her fingers over her name and looked to the left seeing Will’s and Ryan’s name and to the right Gabe’s name, the last time she would ever play with all three of her best friends.

Jack walked down the hallway having seen the whole team come out already and meeting with their family and he saw Will’s sad shake of his head when Jack looked at him.

Jack knew how devastating and heartbreaking a lost like this is, he was close to Kensington’s age when he had a terrible lost at the WJC, getting second place is the last place you want.

Jack walked into the locker room gently leaning against the door being mindful of his sling, he watched as his sister gently traced her name above her stall, “I had a feeling you would still be here.” Jack spoke watching as his little sister didn’t even flinch at his presence.

“Yeah why’s that.” Kensington monotonously spoke not looking at her brother because she knew she would crack and start sobbing and she was afraid she would never be able to stop.

“Because you’ve always liked to be alone when you’re upset.” Jack fondly commented and walked into the room sitting down gingerly on the stall next to hers, he patted her stall gently and gave her a look.

Kensington let out a breath and sat down to Jack, “I wanted to win.” Kensington played with her rings.

“I know.” Jack simply hummed and gently wrapped his good arm around her shoulder.

“I-.” Kensington voice cracked with emotion making her sniffle and wipe her eye, “I just wanted to end in a happy note.” Kensington didn’t want her last game and memories with the team to be so sad, she loved everything about Boston College and it’s been one of the best year of her life and she hates that it as ending so heartbreaking.

Jack just pulled her to his chest and gently rubbed her back and that just made her bust out into sobs, her who’s body was just shaking with her sobs and her face was soaking wet with salty tears that were getting Jack’s jacket wet.

“Ssh, It’s okay Sunny, let it all out.” Jack softly cooed feeling his heartbreaking even more for his baby sister as he gently rubbed her back and kiss the top of her head.

“I’m never gonna play with any of them again.” Kensington chocked out between her sobs, the first time she’s spoke about her leaving out loud.

Kensington just sobbed even harder and could feel her breathing catching as she sobbed so hard, “I just wanted to win.” Kensington whispered and held onto her big brother tighter.

Jack felt tears come to his eyes seeing how upset his baby sister is and a part of him right there hated that hockey had done this to her, to Luke, to Quinn, to Him.

Jack pressed more soft kisses to the top of her head and could feel her tears starting to soak through his shirt now.

Kensington’s sobs slowly started to calm down and she just leaned her forhead still on Jack’s chest trying to catch her breath.

“I’m sorry, i know how much this sucks.” Jack softly comforted her, he knew nothing he would say would really make her feel much better so he just had to be there for her.

Kensington nodded and reluctantly leaned up and lifted her head off Jack and winced apologetically seeing the wet spot on Jack’s jacket.

Jack just smiled shaking off her concerns and pulled his jacket down onto his hand and gently wiped off her tears and gave her a soft kiss to her forehead.

He sent her one more comforting smile before looked at the door seeing Will walk in.

Kensington looked up and saw her just as heartbroken boyfriend and she got up and met him halfway in a tight hug.

Jack smiled softly at the two, he knew there will never be anyone better than Will for his sister and if they can get through the distance then they would be together forever. He quietly left the locker room.

Will held onto his girlfriend tightly and slowly shifted them to the floor and Kensington shuffled closer sitting on his lap, on the floor in the middle of the locker room as they hugged each other tightly.

She knew she had to do this eventually, “I’m leaving this season Will.” Kensington pulled back and avoided eye contact with her long time best friend and boyfriend.

Will swallowed harshly, he knew she was going to leave before him because he knew her team wanted her this season but she declined as she wanted to attend Boston College, so he isn’t surprised but it still hurts just as bad.

Will just let out a shaky breath and cupped her face turning her back to him and pressed their foreheads together closing his eyes.

“I know baby. I know.” Will mumbled softly sniffling as he felt tears running down his face again. Kensington just let out a watery breath and closed her eyes.

Kensington frowned looking at her phone seeing Will either not responding to any of her texts and he hasn’t answered any of her facetime’s which is something he always answers since they have been friends.

Kensington had tried not to think about the almost kiss and how Will was ignoring her the the last three days she was in Jersey spending time with her family before she flew back to Boston late Tuesday night with Jack.

Kensington had Jack staying with her until the Devils play at Boston on the 15th and she was happy to be able to spend more time with her brother, especially because school doesn’t start till the 14th and she only has hockey so she can explore around the city with Jack.

Kensington walked out of the room seeing Jack on his phone sitting on her couch, “Hey i’m gonna head out for practice but i’ll be back before dinner.” Kensington leaned down pressing a kiss to his cheek and she slid her phone into her sweatpants.

“Ok, I’ll see you soon Sunny.” Jack smiled softly at his sister, while he isn’t glad to be out and not playing he can’t help but enjoy the time he’s going to get to spend with his baby sister, time that doesn’t come up often anymore.

He couldn’t help but watch her fondly and she walked out of her apartment and he couldn’t feel bittersweet just seeing how well she lives on her own and how she has her own little life.

Jack also couldn’t help but think something had been bothering Kensington since she came back form Sweden, he’s seen her always checking her phone and frowning at it and she seems just genuinely more sad and it’s definitely making Jack sad that he has no idea what is making his baby sister so upset.

Kensington drove to the rink and walked through the building greeting a lot of the staff, she walked through the door of the locker and froze seeing Will but quickly shook her head and walked past him heading to her stall, which unfortunately for her right now is very close to Will’s stall.

Will felt his shoulders tense as he smelled the perfume that he knew belonged to Kensington and heard her go to her stall, he took a deep breath and tried to ignore her and continued to get ready for practice.

Kensington quickly threw her hair into ponytail after throwing on all her equipment and quickly left the locker room and grabbed her stick heading straight to the ice, and starting to skate around.

Kensington ran a hand through her hair as she finished the team practice, she was one of the first one’s off the ice and quickly headed to the locker room and stripped her equipment off and headed to the showers and took a quick shower and changed into her sweatpants and sweatshirt. She headed back to the dry locker room’s grabbing her phone and keys and quickly left the building.

Will frowned watching Kensington hurry off the ice and by the time he got into the locker room she was gone and her equipment already hung up.

Ryan and Gabe shared a look at the end of the practice wondering why Will and Kensington were completely ignoring each other.

Ryan set a hand on Will’s shoulder as Gabe sat next to Will on a stall, “What’s wrong with you and gray?” Ryan softly questioned one of his best friends. Luckily they were the last three left in the locker room.

“I screwed up.” Will muttered out in defeat, sitting down on his stall looking at his two friends, “I think i ruined our friendship.” He knew trying to kiss her could ruin everything and then ignoring her completely for days was probably not the best idea.

“What happened?” Gabe asked looking at Will in concern.

“We almost kissed the night of the gold medal and i uh kinda gave ignored her since?” Will sheepishly explained realizing it sounds pretty bad.

Gabe narrowed his eyes at Will, Will may be Gabe’s friend but Kensington has been his best friend a lot longer than Will has.

Gaba smacked the back of Will’s head, “Your an idiot.” Will winced rubbing the back of his head.

“Why are you ignoring her?” Ryan questioned after Gabe smacked Will.

“She didn’t want to kiss me and i don’t know i think i ruined everything.” Will mumbled playing with his hands.

Ryan gave Gabe a look, Gabe smacked Will on the back of the head again, “Your an idiot, Gray has been head over heels in love with you for years, why didn’t you guys kiss?”

“Ry interrupted us.” Will couldn’t help but feel hopeful that Gabe was being truthful and Kensington does have feelings for him.

Ryan winced, “By the bathrooms?” Ryan remembered seeing them standing close there that night but being too drunk to realize anything else, Will nodded, “Sorry.” Ryan grimaced muttering.

“This is what you are going to do. Your going to go to Gray’s apartment and your going to apologize and your going to confess your feelings.” Gabo sternly spoke to Will.

“What if-“

“No what ifs. You don’t know untill you try.” Gabe quickly interrupted Will, “Now go shop, you have a girl to confess too.” Gabe pushed Will up and towards the door of the locker room.

He jogged to his cars and quickly started driving. Will took a quick detour and stop at the flower shop buying a bouquet of marigolds because there Kensington’s favorite flower before he rushed back to his car and quickly drove to her apartment. He pulled into a parking spot and rushed into her apartment and ran up the stairs and quickly knocked on her front door.

Will bounced on his toes anxiously as he waited outside her door, The door opened and Will saw Jack standing there.

Jack raised an eyebrow seeing Will stand there with flowers and a nervous look on his face, “I’m assuming your the reason my little sister has been so upset?” Jack glared at Will.

Will nervously gulped and nodded, “I screwed up and i would like to be able to try and fix it.”

Jack raised an impressed eyebrow respecting that Will admitted to his mistakes, while Jack would love to punch anyone who hurts his baby sister he knows she is more than capable than handling herself, “She’s in her room, I better come back to her happier.” Jack glared at Will once more before patting his shoulder and heading out of the apartment going pick up dinner but also give the two some time alone.

“Thank you?” Will called after Jack.

“Don’t screw it up.” Jack chirped back.

Will slowly walked into the apartment closing the door behind him. He walked down the hallway towards her room and knocked on the door.

“Jackie i told you i’m fine.” Kensington groaned from where she buried her head into her pillows once she got him, she groaned hearing a knock again and threw her blankets off her and headed to the door opening it and froze seeing Will standing there looking nervous with flowers in his hands, “Willy?” Kensington asked confused.

“Hi Gray.” Will nervously smiled and handed her the flowers, “These are for you.”

“Marigolds, my favorite.” Kensington muttered as she looked at the flowers.

“I know.” Will admitted with a shrug remembering when she told him.

“What are you doing here?” Kensington questioned not forgetting that Will has been ignoring her.

“I messed up.” Will admitted, “I didn’t think you might of wanted to kiss me back that night and i um assumed i messed everything up between us and that’s the last thing i wanted to do. Kensington i’ve liked you for years now and i’ve tried to get rid of these feelings not wanting to mess up our friendship but i can’t because you are so extremely easy to fall in love with.” Will softly spoke to his best friend as her hand reached for his as he spoke to her, both of them had tears in their eyes as Will spoke.

Kensington let out a watery chuckle, “I’ve liked you for years too.” Will felt his face light up hearing the words he’s been hoping to hear one day.

“So…” Will smiled stepping closer to her, He reached up and tucked a piece of her hair behind her ears as his thump gently caressed against her cheekbone, “Does this mean i get to finally kiss you?”

“Are you going to ignore me after?” Kensington quipped back with a smile as she leaned into his touch, Will shook his head with a fond smile and lifted her chin up as he leaned and gently connected his lips to hers.

Kensington slid her hands around his neck curling at the base of his hair, Kensington felt his grin against her lips which mirrored hers.

They both reluctantly pulled away resting their foreheads together, Will and Kensington both panted as they tried to catch their breaths.

“Woah.” Will mumbled out his smiled still bright and wide on his face as he cupped her face in his hands, “You busy Sunday?” Will asked softly.

Kensington softly shook her head no.

“Will you go on a date with me on Sunday?” Will softly question feeling nervous even if they just kissed.

“Yes.” Kensington smiled nodding and leaned up pecking his lips, “You gonna ask another question?” Kensington giggled slightly.

Will let out a fond laugh, “I would very much like to be your boyfriend, if you will let me?” Will softly smiled as he still held her face delicately in his has hands.

“Yeah.” Kensington nodded biting her lip to stop herself from giggling like crazy.

“Yeah.” Will breathed out in disbelief leaning closer to her, Kensington smiled and connected their lips again, this time more urgent.

Kensington pulled away from the kiss making Will whine and try to follow her with his lips, “My brother is gonna be home soon.” Kensington raised an eyebrow at her now boyfriend.

Will nodded realizing anything more probably wasn’t a good idea now.

“Come Willy, My flowers need to be in a vase.” Kensington grabbed his hand and pulled him to the kitchen with her. Will willingly let her drag him across the apartment towards the kitchen.

Will reached up and grabbed the vase from her cabinet knowing that’s the one she likes for flowers, as she cut off the stems and took all the plastic off.

Kensington smiled admiring her flowers as they rested in the vase, “They are very pretty.” Kensington hummed as Will wrapped his arms behind her and rested his chin on her shoulder.

“Just like you.” Will smiled kissing her cheek.

“Dork.” Kensington playfully pushed him ignoring the burning on her cheeks.

Will closed his eyes as he held Kensington in his arms and gently swayed her as they stood there for awhile just holding each other in silence before they heard the door unlocked and Jack walked in with a bag of food and he raised an eyebrow seeing Will with his arms around Kensington, “See you fixed everything.”

“I did.” Will proudly smiled.

Jack smiled before dropping his smile and glaring at Will, “Next time don’t hurt my sister.” Jack finished speaking and his smile was bakc on his face.

Kensington snickered at her brother who playfully winked at her.

Will turned around letting a breath of relief as he grabbed silverware.

“Tell me everything later?” Jack mouthed over to his little sister, seeing her wide smile and sparkling eyes and they way both of Kensington and Will’s lips are slightly swollen which tells him exactly what the two did.

Kensington quickly nodded smiling knowing the second Will was gone she would be spilling everything to her best friend and older brother.

the four musketeers

Kensington Hughes, Will Smith, Ryan Leonard, and Gabe Perreault

At least once a night at week, The four always have a movie night together even though they usually end up just watching sports, when they all get to Boston they always go to Kensington apartment for their movie nights and the boys usually end up sleeping on the couch or the guest room.

Whenever they are on the bus or plane together Kensington, Will, Gabe and Ryan always sit in one row, two on one side and two on the other side.

They always try to go spend some time at the rink outside of practice or games just the four of them. A lot of the times they will bring a football or soccer ball and just mess around and have fun on the ice to just forgot about everything and make sure to always remember the love and fun they have for the sport.

They are all very competitive and everything is always something that enjoy turing into a competition from board games to hundred of ping pong games.

Ryan and Will have every class together and Kensington and Gabe have four of the five classes with them too, and then Gabe is taking a french class and Kensington has her musical arts class. The four all share theater class and Kensington finds it hilarious sharing the class with the three.

The four end up finding they love chilling in the student hockey lounge after class and before practice, and most of the time Kensington always sit on the couch and Will next to her and she will end up taking like an hour nap, and Will will let her use him as a pillow as Gabe and Ryan goof around with someone on the team.

Ryan and Gabe are waiting for the day that Kensington and Will stop being obviously and noticed their feelings for each other and finally get together.

Will is definitely the best cook out of all four of them, Ryan is alright but it is not always edible, Gabe is a disaster in the kitchen and something is always burnt, Kensington is a good cook but hates cooking so she would rather be Will’s taste tester.

Ryan and Gabe always have to end up dragging Kensington and Will away from animals that catch their attentions because the two could sit for hours petting animals.

Kensington is a very big Taylor swift fan and has gotten all of the boys addicted to her as well, she did drag all three of them to the concert with her. The four did scream all night long to her songs.

Will committed to Boston Collage first and quickly after Ryan announced his commitment to Boston Collage as well. Kensington and Gabe had still haven’t made a decision with all the schools they were accepted too, they decided to go take a tour of a few different schools and they immediately both knew when they toured Boston College that they would be choosing that one.

Ryan had found a small part of the library that no one is ever in and it’s almost likes its own little room with the way the bookshelves are around the couches so if they aren’t studying in Kensington’s apartment the four are all sat around the two couches and the one table.

Kensington has taught all the boys how to play at least one instrument and Ryan is always saying if they fail at hockey they can just become a band.

Ryan, Gabe and Will have all gotten in fights to defend Kensington, Ryan usally is more so the one that fights for her but Gabe and Will have many times. Kensington is pretty difficult to get her to snap and actually fight but the very very few times she had it was defending one of her boys.

Kensington, Gabe and Will all love Ryan’s girlfriend and quickly approved of her when they saw how in love Ryan and Julianna are. Kensington loves having another girl around and Julianna really enjoys seeing a different side of her boyfriend around his best friends.

They have done group costumes for halloween for a few years now, the most recent one was Kensington as Rapunzel, Will as Flynn, Gabe as Pascal and Ryan as Maximus.

When they played in the program for two years, Gabe lived at Kensington’s house for two years and Will and Ryan stayed together for two years.

Will plays with the number 2, Gabe plays with the number 4, Kensington plays with the number 3 and Ryan plays with the number 9.

draft day

June 28, 2023

Kensington woke up to sound of her alarm and sat up shutting it off quickly before realizing it was her draft day. She quickly jumped out of her bed and walked across the hotel room to where Quinn, Jack, and Luke were sleeping. She jumped into the bed that Jack and Luke were sharing and slid into the spot between the two.

Kensington shook both of them. Jack woke up first seeing his little sister next to him shaking him, “Sunny! it’s your draft day.” Jack smiled pulling his little sister into a tight hug, making her fall onto him.

“I know!” Kensington giggled happily making Quinn slowly wake up to the sound of his sister’s giggles. Luke rolled over opening his eyes looking at his siblings.

Ellen and Jim walked in brining breakfast, Ellen smiled seeing all her babies together, “Good you are all awake!” Ellen set the bags of food on the table before walking over to the bed that three of her kids were in and leaned down pressing a kiss to her youngest forhead, “Happy draft day Kensi!” Ellen proudly smiled at her daughter.

“Thanks mama.” Kensington smiled leaning her head on Jack’s chest.

“Alright all of you need to eat we have got a big day.” Ellen looked at her four kids, getting two half asleep nods and two smiles from her other kids, “And Kensi yours is going to melt.” Ellen mischievously smiled at her youngest.

Kensington looked at her mother before gasping excitedly before quickly getting out of the bed and rushing over to the desk where her father was sitting. Kensington leaned down pressing a kiss to her dad’s cheek, “Hi dad.” Before she looked down at the door and smiled seeing two of her favorite things, Iced Matcha’s and Açaí bowls. Kensington grabbed her breakfast before sitting crisscross on the end of the bed eating her bowl as her brothers all got out bed grabbing the food for them.

Luke grabbed his food stealing the spot next to his sister pressing a soft kiss to her head before digging into his food.

Quinn walked over to his sister giving her a side hug careful of her food and pressed a soft kiss to the side of her head, “Happy draft day little sunshine.” Kensington smiled happily at her older brother as she was chewing her granola from her bowl.

Jack jumped onto the bed behind Kensington and Luke, He sat up behind the two happily munching on his breakfast burrito. Quinn sat behind Luke.

The four all quickly ate their food in silence as their parents ate at the desk.

Jack leaned over Kensington’s shoulder gaining her attention, Jack pulled out his famous pout towards his little sister.

“Alright.” Kensington fondly agreed, Jack whooped taking her iced matcha and taking a sip.

Jack handed it back to his sister after drinking some of it and continued eating.

The six all quickly finished their breakfast and the boys started to get ready first as the camera were coming on wanting to see Kensington get ready. Ellen and Jim had already gotten ready before they brought breakfast.

The boys are walked out the room as Kensington was sitting at the desk doing her makeup and hair with her mother, Kensington opened and closed her mouth in shock as she looked at the three and their suits, she turned to look at her parents as saw her dad put on his tie and her mom was holding her heels.

Kensington smiled feelings her eyes welled with tears, Jack has a pink vest and tie, Luke has pink bow tie and pocket square, Quinn has a pink button up shirt, Her dad has pink socks and tie, Her mom has pink heels and earrings. Pink her favorite color

“Thank you.” Kensington smiled wobbly at her family, Jack threw an arm over her shoulder pulling her in a side hug.

“Of course sunny it’s your draft day.” Jack proudly smiled at his sister and he was very excited when he got to pick out something pink for his suit.

Ellen continued to get Kensington hair softly curled as Kensington did a very soft makeup look not liking a lot on her.

They had just finished her hair as the camera crew had come in, they talked to the whole family as Kensington went into the bathroom to change into her suit.

Kensington picked a very pink suit with a few other colors in a plaid pattern, and a white tight long sleeve bodysuit. Kensington opened the bathroom door as she put on her suit jacket. Kensington smiled as she spun around in her suit.

“Ah My mom and I went to New Jersey and we got my suit designed, i really want bright colors and specifically a pattern, on the inside of the jacket i got all my family’s initials stitched over my heart so i’ll have them with me.” Kensington smiled at the camera showing them her suit. “Oh my Jewelry i really wanted it to be simple and minimal, my grandmother made me a pair of beautiful colored earrings when i was younger and it was my inspiration for the colors in my suit so i obviously chose those, i chose just a small pair of sun earrings for my second piercing and then this my sun bracelet my brothers picked it out for me a few years as a gift so it seemed perfect for today.” Kensington smiled finishing the talking at the camera.

Kensington sat on the bed slipping on her white platform boots that give her a good four inches of height.

Kensington smiled in the hundreds of photos that was taken of her and with her family before they were finally out of the hotel and at the bus to take them to the arena.

Kensington sat next to Quinn and rested her head on his shoulders taking a few minutes of peace and quiet while taking a few deep breaths. Quinn stayed silent just gently squeezing her hand letting her take a few moments to herself.

Kensington could hear the crowd get louder and louder as they got closer to the arena and before she knew it she was getting out of the bus making even louder cheers as she got out of the bus and she was signing millions of different things for fans, she took many photos with fans and did the little interviews as she walked the red carpet and before she knew she was in the arena with her family and looking for her friends.

She saw the blonde fluffy hair, next to a mop of brown curls and a brown fluff of hair and she immediately knew they were her best friends. Her and family walked over to where Will, Gabe and Ryan were all standing with their families

Kensington mischievous smiled and put her arms around Ryan and Gabe’s shoulders , “Boo!”

Gabe just laughed used to Kensington scaring him, Ryan flinched at her, “Gray!!!! How many times do i have to say don’t sneak up on me!” Ryan groaned hating how she always gets him, Gabe, Will and Kensington just laughed knowing Ryan has always been easy to scare.

“Many. I just ignore them.” Kensington sweetly smiled at her best friend grabbing his arm when Ryan went to mess up her hair, “Do not mess it up Leno.” Ryan just smiled putting his arms up in surrender.

Kensington looked between her three boys looking at them all cleaned up for the drafy, she brushed one of Gabe’s curls off his forehead having lived with him for two years she’s made his hair routine for him,

Kensington’s eyes stopped on Will’s tie, it was pink. Her eyes looked up to Will who jsut offered her a small smile and a nonchalantly shrug, making Kensington remember a moment from a few months ago.

Will smiled shaking his head at his two friends before looking at Kensington who was looking at him with a look he hasn’t seen before, “What gray?” Will curiously questioned his best friend.

“You should wear pink more often.” Kensington answered not even realizing the words came out of her mouth making her blush and quickly scramble with words and leaving the room to where Gabe and Ryan were.

Will watch her leave with pink cheeks and silly smile, “Pink, alright.” Will muttered to himself nodding looking down at his baby pink sweatshirt.

“Oh you look beautiful Kensington!” Collen Smith smiled pulling her into a hug, as the four families all chatted and said their hellos around the group.

“Thanks Colls!” Kensington smiled having adored Will’s mom since the moment she met her two years ago.

Kensington scooted over to Will when everyone else was distracted, “So pink tie.” Kensington whispered to her best friend with a small soft smile.

“Someone said i look good in pink.” Will whispered back with fond smile.

“You do.” Kensington softly agreed looking a little flushed as she gently fixed his tie softly.

Will felt his face warm, “You look beautiful.” He smiled at his best friend.

“Thank you.” Kensington was cut off by Grace Smith coming over and grabbing her attention.

Ryan and Gabe were in conversation when they realized their two best friends were whispering together with smiles, “When are they gonna realize.” Ryan groaned not saying much as he knew he had a mic on him but he knew Gabe knew what me meant.

“Honestly. I want my money.” Gabe agreed but also wanted them to get together soon so he could win the money in the bet he had with Ryan for when Will and Kensington would notice their feelings for each other and get together.

Will watched two of his favorite girls talk and laugh together before he felt a hand smack the back of his head seeing Jack looking at him with a smirk, “You ever gonna admit your totally whipped for my sister willy boy.” Jack smugly smirked at the boy who his sister is always talking about.

“I don’t know what to it talking about.” Will scrambled out looking panicked, “Besides do you even want someone to be whipped for your sister?”

Jack pursued his lips, “Not really but my sister seems to enjoy your company so if she’s happy i’m happy.” Jack shrugged having not problem with Will until Kensington’s feeling were hurt.

Will opened his mouth to reply when his mom called for him.

Kensington was in one row with her family and the row in front of her was Will and his family, Gabe and his family in the row in front of Will and Ryan and his family in front of Gabe.

Kensington say between Luke and Jack holding both of theirs hands as they watched the draft began, she knew Connor was going first and she knew he deserved it she smiled watched him walk across the stage and accepting his jersey, having become good friends with him during the Combine and ended up going to a playoff game with him.

Kensington took a deep breath as the Pittsburgh Penguins representative walked up the stage to select the second pick of the draft, “The Pittsburgh Penguins are proud to select Kensington Hughes from the USA Development Program.” Kensington smiled standing up immediately Jack pulling her in a tight hug and she could feel him vibrating with excitement for her.

“I’m so proud of you Sunny.” Jack pressed a kiss to her head, before letting her go to Quinn who softly hugged his baby sister, “Enjoy this little sun. Well done.” Quinn smiled pressing a soft kiss to her cheek, Kensington smiled turning around hugging Luke tightly.

“Good job Sunshine.” Luke whispered to her with a proud smile on his face before letting her go and let her walk by to her parents.

“Oh my littlest love well done.” Ellen pressed a million kisses to the side of her daughter’s head as they hugged, before reluctantly letting her go to Jim.

Jim gently hugged his only daughter and kissing her cheek letting her slip off her suit coat handing it him.

Kensington walked down three stairs swing her three best friends all waiting there for her with proud smiles, she chuckled as they all pulled her into a hug at the same time, she tightly hugged all of them before continuing her walk down the stairs and across the cat walk.

She shook everyone’s hand as she walked across the stage before she was handed the black and yellow jersey and smiled as she slipped it on smiling at the crowd seeing her family and friends in the stands.

Kensington was dragged into a million diffent directions for interviews and photos taking a good few hours and before she knew it she was meeting up her three best friends and all of their families and her family at a restaurant the parents had reservations for and the rest of the night was filled with good foods, laughed and quality time with family and friends.

Luke and Kensington are quite smart and that’s both something that many people dismiss or look over for their hockey skills so Luke and Kensington have always had little ice cream days to celebrate when they went to school near each other. Kensington still tells Luke all about her grades when she’s is collage and since they don’t live near each other anymore, Luke will always get icecream delivered for her as a surprise.

Luke was the one who to Kensington how to drive, Quinn and Jack were gone in the NHL, and Kensington never asked her parents to teach her because Luke had already offered and he took her to get her drivers license.

Luke was always be the one who would make Sandcastles with Kensington when they were younger and he would hold the bucket for her as she picked out seashells.

Luke as he has gotten older his hair got more curlier and had no idea how to style it so Kensington was the one who always helped him, going with him to get it cut, finding hair products and making him try them all.

When Quinn and Jack bought the Lake house, Quinn had made sure there was a room that Kensington could have as her music room, he made sure they got a couch put into the room as all of the brothers, Quinn especially love listening to Kensington play music and always end up falling asleep as they do. Quinn was also the one who started slowly buying Kensington more Musical Instrument that she could keep at the Lake house not having to travel even more with them.

Quinn always has a plane ticket ready for Kensington to come out for his family skate every year, his whole team loves the baby Hughes.

Quinn is the one Kensington likes to go to for advice and they always FaceTime and Quinn enjoys hearing all the gossip Kensington has for him, and he always gives great advice for his sister.

Kensington has always said Quinn gives the best hugs and that something he always brags about to Jack and Luke.

Jack was the only brother who didn’t really care is she went to Michigan like Luke and Quinn, when he found out she got into Boston Collage he was extremely excited for the possibility that she would only be four hours from him and meaning they could see each other a lot more. He was also happy she decided to go to Collage and turn down going straight into the NHL, wanting his sister to be able to experience a life that isn’t all hockey.

Jack of course wanted his sister on the Devils with him and Luke but he knew it wouldn’t be possible knowing she was going to be one of the first pics and he was glad she got drafted to Pittsburgh especially since Devils and Penguins play very often during the season.

Jack knew how much Kensington loves her music and could see how sad she was when she realized she wouldn’t be able to bring most of her music equipment and instruments with her to collage as it wouldn’t all fit in the dorms, so being the big brother who is always spoiling his baby sister, he worked it out with his parents to surprise his sister. Instead of her getting a dorm, Jack got her an apartment close by the school and big enough for everything she wants to bring and an a extra room when any of them visit her.

Jack and Kensington both love sleeping, and it’s pretty common whenever they are together seeing them napping cuddled together, it’s also normal for a lot of the times that they facetime they end up falling asleep.

Quinn had gotten a old car from his parents when started driving that he passed onto Jack, Jack who drove it a lot before finally passing it onto Luke and by the time it got to Luke it was at least fifteen years old and had many problems, It lasted Luke just enough until he when to Jersey and it was supposed to be passed down to Kensington so she didn’t have to keep borrowing her parents cars, but the three quickly decided they didn’t want her driving that car especially driving it all the way to Boston from Michigan and through the crazy winter weather, so Quinn, Jack and Luke all spilt the price and for her birthday got her 2021 black dodge durango.

Whenever the four played hockey when they were younger, they would have the teams spilt up as an older sibling and a younger, most of the time it was Quinn and Luke on a team and Jack and Kensington on a team together, but as they got older especially in the summer after they both got drafted, it ended up switching and Luke and Kensington would always be on the same team giving their older siblings a difficult time.

When Kensington was young she was able to persuade all three do her brothers to always have tea parties with her, Jack was always the easiest wanting to spend time with his sister and had no problem wearing a tiara, Luke was more difficult but all Kensington had to do was mention the snacks she picked out and he would willingly join and Quinn usally didn’t really want to get dressed up but he easily agreed from his sister’s puppy eyes.

The three loved spoiling their sister and make sure every week she gets flowers. It started with Quinn when he left for the development program he would send flowers home for her, and then Jack would make here to send some for her when he left to Jersey. Quinn and Jack have continued this for the last five years and now that Luke has moved away from Kensington he now sends her flowers too.

Before Kensington first ever hockey game when she was very young her brothers all were messing with her hair doing braids and when she went into the ice she still had one little braid under all her hair by her ear and she didn’t know which one of her brothers did that one. It’s something she always makes sure she has on game days or big days is a little braid on the under-layer of her hair. She always is reminded of her brothers as a braid is three strands of her hair for her three brothers, the main reason she picked her hockey number to be number three.

Ever Mother’s Trip with either the Devils or the Canucks, The boys make sure Kensington joins them with Ellen.

The four FaceTime at least once a week all together, and are all constantly texting each other in their sibling group chat.

the first ever post for her soft launch, carter started her years long soft launch today.

vera and jack and they have never officially said they are together but they have posted each others for almost a year so it’s kinda obviously.

as fas as everybody besides her family and a few friends, Kensington isn’t in a relationship with anyone, everyone assumes her brothers got her these flowers, and while her brothers did they didn’t get theses one.

ice cream

February 10, 2023

Kensington hurried home after hockey practice excited because she knew Luke was coming home after school and should he at their parents house by the time she got home from hockey.

Kensington pulled into the driveway and went up the front steps and quickly opened her front door smiling seeing Luke’s bag by the door and she could hear his voice in the living room.

Kensington walked into the living room seeing Luke and her mom sitting on the couch talking, she quickly walked over and jumped onto to Luke and hugged him tightly.

Luke grunted slighty at the weight but smiled once he noticed who it was, “Hi Sunny.” Luke smiled hugging his sister tightly and pressing a kiss to the side of her head.

“Hi Lulu.” Kensington whispered happily cuddling onto of her brother, Ellen smiled watching her two youngest missing the days their home was filled with all four of her kids but she also was so proud of all of them.

“How did you test go?” Luke softly questioned. Luke has always been the one who helped Kensington with her school and when he went to college she would facetime whenever she needed help.

“98%!” Kensington leaned up looking at Luke excited, she was really nervous for history exam she had this morning and spent most of the last night on facetime with Luke studying.

“Sunny! That’s amazing!” Luke smiled proudly he had no doubt she was going to do amazing on her test, “Ice cream?” Luke questioned.

Kensington and Luke have had their ice cream tradition since they were very young and Ellen would take them when they were in elementary school after doing a good job in school or having a rough day and once Luke could drive it was always just Luke and Kensington. Since Luke went to college they couldn’t get ice cream as much but whenever they see each other they also end up getting ice cream to make up for it.

“Yes!” Kensington nodded smiling. Luke laughed and let her get up and he got off the couch as well they both said bye to their mom and Luke hoped into his drivers seat and Kensington in the passenger seat.

Luke drove them to their favorite ice cream shop and they both smiled at the very familiar place and workers, Luke ordered his favorite chocolate soft serve and Kensington got the matcha soft serve.

They headed back to the car with their ice creams in hand and sat in the car chatting as that ate their icecream.

March 8, 2024

Kensington looked up from her laptop hearing a knock on her door, she set her laptop on the couch and walked to the door looking through the door hole seeing a delivery man, she opened the door.

“Kensington Hughes?” The delivery man asked and he got a nod in return, he handed the bag to her and walked away.

Kensington shut the door behind her and opened the bag smiling seeing two pints of her favorite ice creams and a note.

She smiled softly shaking her head fondly at her brother. She was quite sad when she realized Luke and hers ice cream tradition would be basically over when she moved to Boston and him to New Jersey but Luke had started sending her ice cream instead.
