Overclocked
This piece took me a long while. It’s 11 pages long, so to save you all the trouble, I’m gonna be posting it in parts, and the rest of the posts will go into a queue to go up once a day. Anyway, here’s the opening chapter! I hope it’s as much fun to read as it was to write.
When we were walking home that day, I thought the villain that jumped out to get us was just some dime-a-dozen, low level scumbag. He must have followed us home from UA, because from the moment we saw him, it was clear he was looking for a fight.
“Hey, you two! Try this on for size!” He shouted, and flung out a hand.
Without a second thought, I dove in front of Kailey as the beam emanated from his outstretched fingers. Thankfully, my motion worked, and I caught the brunt of the beam in my chest. I must have blacked out for a moment after, as the world shifted just a bit before my eyes as I lay on the sidewalk, breath heaving.
As I scrambled to my feet to protect Kailey from any further blows, however, it became clear that whatever this villain just did, it wasn’t good. I felt my muscles shift and tighten, and my heart begin to race, as I stiffened strangely. Glancing down, I noted the ground beneath my feet beginning to frost over, even though I hadn’t forced any cold to move in my body.
“Feel that, kid? Your body, ramming itself into a higher gear as your quirk spirals out of control? That’s my quirk, and where I get my name. You can call me Overclock.” Overclock boasted, the bravado clear in his voice.
“W-Well, Overclock, I-” My voice quavered and failed as I extended a hand toward him, only to notice the frost ensheathing my fingers. I squinted a bit at this, and brought my extended arm back in close to myself, gritting my teeth to try to force the cold back down into myself. Why couldn’t I focus my power..? Then it snapped into place. He wasn’t exaggerating, that wasn’t just a boast. He really did dial my quirk up a few notches, but.. Why? I swayed a bit on my feet as I looked up at him, asking the question that had just run across my mind.
“Well, usually, kid, you get the whole beam, and the quirk buried in your gut rips you to pieces. If any so called ‘hero’ survives their quirk ripping them up, then they get to fight me, one on one, without it.”
I stumbled once more, my knees hitting the concrete as the cold continued to build in my hands. As my eyes began to frost over, I looked up at Kailey, who had recoiled in shock at my slowly cryogenifying body, and whispered, “I’m sorry, K.”
Then, unable to hold back the rushing tide of power, I screamed, and a wave of cold tore out of me, my fingers cracking and shattering under the strain. My teeth began to chatter with the force of it, and I tried one last time to wrest my power back under my control. It felt like biting into the antarctic ice shelf, but I persisted, trying to hold myself back so I didn’t destroy not just Kailey, but everyone around me as well. The pulse faded slightly as I marshalled every last ounce of strength in my body, trying to wrangle back in the cold leaking from every inch of my soul. Then, as if to taunt me for trying to hold back, the cold tore through me once more, and I reacted as though something hit me. I fell to the ground, back spasming with the force of the frigidity unleashed from every cell of my being, in just enough time to see the wave of rippling cold wash over Kailey, and the last thing I saw was my best friend frozen in shock.
The blaring of my alarm jolted me out of sleep, the flinch rolling over my body throwing me a few inches from the bed as I fumbled for the snooze button. Blearily dragging a hand across my eyes, I flinched as I heard the glass next to my alarm tumble to the floor. “Oh come ON!” I shouted as my foot firmly planted itself in the puddle of water, shocking me awake. As the sound of the sliding door reached my ears, I whirled in shock, brain sent stammering in confusion alongside my mouth. “K-k-k-kailey?? You’re alive? What happened yesterday? Why can’t I remember after-” “Alive? Of course I am, dummy! What else would I be?” “B-b-but-” “C’mon, we’ve got a test today, and I don’t wanna be late!” My hand tugged at my face, and I groaned. The last thing I needed after yesterday’s... yikesfest, to put it lightly, was the stress of another test at U.A. After hurrying through the process of getting ready to face the day, I rushed to school, Kailey at my side as usual.
As we hurried through the school gates, Kailey turned to me, an eyebrow quirked, and asked a question that seemed to be on her mind the whole walk there.
“Aaron, what did you mean by you’re alive? You looked at me like you’d seen a ghost!”
“What did I mean by it?” I spluttered, lowering my voice and stepping in closer to make sure my compatriot could hear me, “K, we nearly DIED yesterday fighting that overclock guy. I’m the forgetful one here, I mean, I can’t remember the rest of the day after that big kaboom, I was hoping you could shed some light on that!”
“Overclock? Aaron, are you feeling alright?” Kailey felt at my forehead, brushing aside a few stray hairs, and her eyebrows crinkled along with her nose in confusion. “You don’t seem any warmer than usual, but that big of a blank space in your memory is kinda bad, even for you. You sure we don’t need to go to recovery girl? I’m certain that the teacher would understand if you weren’t feeling alright.”
“No no no, I don’t wanna be late, I have enough tardies as it is. I’ll sort it out, let’s just get to class.”
Our first class passed uneventfully, though the test we were taking certainly seemed a bit familiar. As we emerged from the sterile brightness of the basement classroom, I once again turned to K, trying to avoid my confusion at what’d happened in the past by focusing on what we just did.
“Hey K, that exam was really a breeze, wasn’t it? I’m surprised the teacher spent so long hyping it up, I felt like I was just doing our worksheets over again!” I burbled cheerfully, excited that I didn’t have much to gnash my teeth over.
“eASY?? DUDE I WAS LIKE, SWEATING SO HARD I ALMOST MELTED!” Kailey burst out, whirling on me like I had gone nuts.
“J-jeez, K, I thought you had done your studying! I was the one who was supposed to be worried about the test today, like the one from yesterday-” I cut myself off midsentence, realizing that there was a test yesterday, too. Why would the professor load us up twice?
“Yesterday’s test was a practical, Aaron, you know I’m the one who’s gotta worry about those! You do so much work on your own you hardly break a sweat!” Kailey said, her fist whapping me on the shoulder suddenly.
I rubbed at my shoulder, mostly joking, but also considerably surprised at the force of her blow. Did she usually pack that much of a.. Well, punch? I shook my head to clear the confusion from it, and glanced at my watch, to find that we’d blown almost all of our passing period.
“oH HECK K, GRAB MY WRIST, WE’RE GONNA HAVE TO SKATE TO CLASS!” I cried, hopping a bit to form the skate blades and ice over the floor that I knew the janitors hated to deal with.
“Aaron, no we’re no-” My friend’s protests were cut off by my sudden movement, floor freezing over just enough in front of me that I could keep up the speed supplied by my skates. However, my stomach fell into my feet as I saw who was leaning out of the door next to our next class. Aizawa hated when kids used their quirks indoors, especially to get out of receiving a tardy. Sure, he could be late all he liked, but his reasoning was, “I’m an adult, I missed my chance to learn how time works.” My arms a-flail, I did my best to slow down, but it was too late. The all-too familiar glow crossed his eyes, and I bit back a groan as heat flooded my body. I didn’t have but a moment to complain at the warmth suffusing my body, however, as the ice underfoot almost immediately ran out, and I pitched forward, whirling to land beneath my best friend so she’d have a somewhat soft landing. The smack of my head against the tile rang through the almost empty hallway, and I saw stars for a moment.
“Ugh, did you catch the number of that bus that hit me?” I groaned up at Kailey, Aizawa rolling his eyes at my honestly terrible wonderful joke.
“You’d best learn not to rely on your quirk too much, kid. It’ll land you in a much worse situation in a real fight if you’re without it.” Aizawa deadpanned as he handed Kailey a hall pass. “Take your dazed friend here to recovery girl, young lady. I get the sense that blow to the head isn’t treating him too well.”
Kailey offered me a hand up, and it momentarily doubled, but I still did my best to take it, bouncing to my feet, only to feel the world spin for a moment, as though my brain was annoyed at my sudden movement. “Aaron, c’mon, we don’t wanna be too late for hero support class!”
“A-are you sure about that, Kailey? You don’t usually like support class.” I squinted at my pal, holding at my head. Maybe that knock on my head could sort just what the heck went on yesterday out.
I managed to get not much outside a minor scolding about my recklessness from recovery girl, and made it through the rest of the day without much else happening. When we were walking home from school, however, I felt a wave of deja-vu hit me so hard, my ears almost rang a little, and I stepped in front of Kailey, though I wasn’t quite sure just what I did that for.. As was Kailey, as she ejaculated the same question to me after slamming into my back, face first.
“What the heck, Aaron? I was walking there, you dingus!”
“I.. I’m not sure, K. I’ve got a bad feeling about going that way.” I muttered, almost to myself.
“What do you mean? That’s the way we always go home! You’ve been acting weird all day. Just come on, I’m sure between you and me we could handle anything that came for us anyway.” Kailey spouted, striding past me firmly with a surprising degree of confidence.
I blinked, raising a hand as if to grip at her shoulder to stop her, but let it fall, and ran to catch up with my friend. Not a moment later, the bushes next to the sidewalk rustled, and out stumbled a rather disheveled looking guy.
“Who are-” I started, only to be cut off by an overdramatic shout from the stranger.
“Hey you kids! Try this on for size!”
Out rang his words, but that wasn’t the only thing flung our way, a beam extending from his outstretched hand. I once again found myself in front of Kailey, this time a hurried dive making me once again conk my head. When I got ahold of myself, I found that Kailey had already tugged me to my feet, and I shook myself, raising an arm to stop the villain who dared attack my best friend.. Only to find that my chest was tightening, and the temperature falling with it.
“What the.. This.. I..” words fell from my mouth in confusion as the cold seeped out of me, the sidewalk freezing over in an ever-expanding fractal.
“Ha, well, good try, taking half the attack for your little gal pal there, but now you’re both overclocked!”
“Overclocked.. I met you yesterday! What happened after I blacked out?” I shouted, my hands shaking as the cold continued to force it’s way out of my body.
“Yesterday? Kid, I ain’t seen ya before, and I never forget a quirk! Even on a two-bit snow machine like you. I’m curious, if youse been hit before, can yer handle it now?” Overclock gripped at his chin, seeming excited for the coming fight.
“D-D-Does your dialing up cause memory loss?” My teeth began to chatter as it got cold enough around me for even my nerves to start getting my brain worried. The shivers rushing through my body pitched harder, and I fell to the ground.
A scream tore it’s way through my body, and a wave of cold tore out of me in kind, my fingers letting out an angry creak under the strain. I grit my chattering teeth, and steeled my resolve as I tried one last time to wrest my power back under my control. My tongue crackled as it began to freeze between my teeth, but I had to keep trying to hold myself back so I didn’t destroy not just Kailey, but everyone around me as well. The pulse faded slightly as I marshalled my will, attempting to plug the holes in the crumbling dam that was holding back the cold. Then, as if to taunt me for trying to hold back, the cold tore through me once more, and the dam crumbled, the force of that last wall shattering making me react as though struck. My arm that was propping me up went limp, and I fell to the ground, back spasming under the strain of my quirk ripping my body to shreds, in just enough time to see the wavering air that clearly carried the chill that drove my soul wash over Kailey, and the last thing I saw was my best friend literally frozen in shock.

In the throes of art block, my brain latched onto a character I designed about a year ago and now I've been doodling him pretty nonstop
So, meet Abbel Achard! A robot originally designed to be a nothing but an apple company's mascot. When that company died, Abbel was left to do whatever he wanted, and he more or less became his own person!! Unfortunately, he's still occasionally recognized as a Mascot and it kills him inside. and outside.
