‘Will win 150 seats’: Rahul Gandhi's prediction for Congress in MP election
Gandhi addressed the media after the party's 'election preparedness meet' in Delhi, attended by top Congress leaders, including party chief Mallikarjun Kharge.
Tumblr media
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Monday predicted that the party will win 150 out of 230 seats in the upcoming Madhya Pradesh assembly election later this year. “Karnataka election result will be repeated in Madhya Pradesh,” Gandhi told reporters after the party’s meeting on election preparedness.
“We had a detailed meeting just now, and our internal assessment indicates that after securing 136 seats in Karnataka, we are now projected to win 150 seats in Madhya Pradesh,” Gandhi said, as quoted by news agency ANI.
In a video shared by ANI, when asked about the Congress party’s chief ministerial candidate for Madhya Pradesh, Gandhi chose not to provide a direct answer but emphasised the party’s goal of winning 150 seats.
Kamal Nath who served as the state chief minister during Congress’ short-lived government in the state between 2018 and 2020, said, “We discussed the strategy and the issues on which the party should contest these polls. We are all of the opinion that we will enter the poll fray unitedly.”
Preparing for upcoming elections in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh
Besides Rahul Gandhi, Kamal Nath, Digvijay Singh, and AICC general secretary KC Venugopal, met party chief Mallikarjun Kharge to discuss the upcoming assembly election in the state.
According to news agency PTI, Rajasthan Congress leaders were also slated to convene in Delhi, including chief minister Ashok Gehlot and his former deputy Sachin Pilot.
Both Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh are set to hold elections by the end of this year. Currently, Rajasthan is under the governance of the Congress party, led by Ashok Gehlot, while Madhya Pradesh is governed by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), with Shivraj Singh Chouhan serving as the chief minister.
Congress promises for Madhya Pradesh
Congress, last week released a list of ‘five promises’ to the people of Madhya Pradesh ahead of the assembly election:
1. Gas cylinder at ₹500
2. ₹1500 to every woman per month
3. 100 units of free electricity, 200 units halved
4. Farm loan waiver
5. Implementation of old pension scheme
Rajya Sabha MP Digvijaya Singh had earlier said that Madhya Pradesh Congress president Kamal Nath is poised to be the party’s chief ministerial candidate for the upcoming 2023 assembly election.
The assembly polls are expected to take place at the end of the year. In the 2018 elections, the Congress emerged as the largest party and formed government under Nath’s leadership. But in 2020, Nath was forced to resign after his government was reduced to minority due to resignation of 23 Congress MLAs owing allegiance to Jyotiraditya Scindia. The BJP later formed the government under Shivraj Singh Chouhan.

BJP’s outreach suffers setback as party scores ‘zero’ in tribal seats
Tumblr media
BJP's tribal outreach program suffers setback in Karnataka: In the 2018 elections, BJP won six of the 15 ST reserved seats in Karnataka, but lost all of them to Congress this time. Congress dominates among tribal voters in the key heartland states of Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Chhattisgarh, which have a total of 101 ST reserved assembly seats. BJP's focus on tribal outreach for upcoming elections: BJP has been focusing on reaching out to tribal population to secure maximum tribal votes in the upcoming assembly and 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The next phase of assembly elections will be held in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Chhattisgarh where tribal voters play a crucial role. For more reads : Political news

NEW DELHI: The counting of votes for the aggressively contested Karnataka elections is under way, three days after the voting concluded to elect the 224 members of the state assembly. Most pollsters have given an edge to the Congress over the ruling BJP, while also indicating the possibility of a hung assembly in the state. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been holding roadshows in key parts of Karnataka in the lead-up to the state's assembly elections. The first of two roadshows in Bengaluru on Saturday could be a gamechanger and make history in the state's electoral politics. In the 2018 elections, the BJP fell short of nine seats, but formed a government with the help of some Congress and JDS MLAs. However, the coalition did not last and the BJP came to power. BJP's poor performance in Bengaluru city and some parts of Karnataka was attributed to the failure of its workers to micro-manage at the booth level. To avoid a repeat of this in 2023, PM Modi and Karnataka BJP leaders are focusing on winning all the seats in Bengaluru city. During his campaign, PM Modi traversed 26 kms in the city and plans to hold a 10-km roadshow the following day as well. His roadshow passed through Padmanabha Nagar, where the former Deputy Chief Minister and sitting Revenue Minister of Karnataka, R Ashok, is fighting the election. PM Modi's opponents, particularly the Congress, have questioned his roadshows. However, devoting maximum time and energy to election campaigns has always been a part of PM Modi's strategy, and he enjoys connecting with people directly. PM Modi's rivals also inadvertently give him material to use against them during his campaigns, and he does not miss an opportunity to do so. The Congress has a good base in Karnataka, and rather than hurling insults at PM Modi, they could have unveiled a vision for the development of the state to gain electoral advantage.

Karnataka shows what Modi should most fear ahead of 2019 general elections
Tumblr media
As a politician, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is distinguished by his relentlessness. Every vote, every constituency, every election matters. Modi has built his Bharatiya Janata Party into an electoral juggernaut that runs 21 of India’s 29 states; 70 per cent of India’s population is ruled by the BJP at both the state and the federal level.
In some of these states, such as the vast northern territory of Uttar Pradesh, the party swept elections on its own. In others, such as UP’s struggling neighbor Bihar, the BJP stole away one member of the ruling coalition in order to seize power for itself. In yet others, such as the coastal state of Goa, the opposition Congress Party in fact did better than the BJP in the elections only to discover that Modi’s lieutenants were far more skillful alliance-builders.
Last weekend, in the southern state of Karnataka -- home to India’s IT capital, Bangalore -- Modi discovered the limits of this strategy. Karnataka was the last major state ruled by Congress; after a bruising election campaign, the BJP ended up winning more seats in the state assembly, though not quite enough to form an outright majority.

Quote
We expected the exams, IPL and Karnataka Assembly Election to hit business for two to three weeks. But the effect was felt for over two months. A bigger problem for the Kannada film industry is the absence of films of big stars. Star films are good for the industry. These films ensure that audience come to theatres. Even a bad film of the stars generates business. Each of these stars should have at least two films a year for the good health of the industry.

Karnataka Government Formation: Supreme Court tells BJP to face floor test tomorrow; top updates
While the Supreme Court resumed its hearing over the Karnataka government formation, the Congress observed ‘Save Democracy Day’ across the country. Catch all the updates here.
Tumblr media
Karnataka Elections Results 2018 » The Supreme Court on Friday held a hearing in the Karnataka government formation matter, directing that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and the state’s new chief minister, B S Yeddyurappa, must conduct the floor test on Saturday at 4 pm.
The hearing came after the apex court issued notices to the Karnataka government and BJP’s Yeddyurappa seeking their replies on the plea filed by the Congress-Janata Dal (Secular) combine, which has opposed Yeddyurappa’s swearing-in and termed Governor Vajubhai Vala’s decision to invite the BJP to form the government as “unconstitutional”. Meanwhile, the Congress, for its part, observed ‘Save Democracy Day’ today across the country.
The Supreme Court has directed the Centre to place before it two communications sent by Yeddyurappa to Governor Vala in which he had staked claim to form the government, saying their perusal was necessary to decide the case. Among these communications to be furnished in court will be the letter of support from newly-elected legislators that Yeddyurappa submitted to the Governor. The Congress has argued that the letter submitted by Yeddyurappa has only 104 signatures, which is clearly short of the majority mark of 112-seats in the 222-member Assembly. The Congress-JD(S) had submitted a letter with 117 signatures.
On Thursday, Governor Vala administered the oath of office and secrecy to Yeddyurappa at the Raj Bhavan in a morning ceremony. Vala has told Yeddyurappa to prove within 15 days that he has the majority in the Legislative Assembly. Although the BJP emerged as the single-largest party, winning 104 seats, in the May 12 assembly election, it fell short of eight seats from the 112-halfway mark in the lower House. The Congress trailed behind the saffron party with 78 seats and the regional JD(S) with 37 seats.
At a special pre-dawn hearing, a three-judge Bench of the apex court had rejected a joint writ petition, filed by the Congress and the JD(S) on Wednesday night, to halt the swearing-in of Yeddyurappa as Karnataka chief minister. However, the top court said Yeddyurappa’s swearing-in was subject to the final outcome of the matter before it.

Karnataka: SC refuses to stay Yeddyurappa swearing-in; latest updates
Tumblr media
In a joint petition in Supreme Court, the Congress and the Janata Dal (Secular) had sought a stay on the oath-taking taking ceremony of BJP's chief ministerial candidate Yeddyurappa
Karnataka Election 2018 News: The Supreme Court, after a midnight hearing on Thursday, refused to stall the swearing-in of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader B S Yeddyurappa as Karnataka's new Chief Minister.
The court, however, made it clear that the swearing-in and the government formation would be subject to the final outcome of the case before it.
The top court sought the letters which Yeddyurappa had written to Karnataka Governor informing him his election as BJP legislature party and posted the matter for further hearing at 10.30 am on Friday.
In a midnight legal push, the Congress and Janata Dal (Secular) had approached the Supreme Court seeking an immediate intervention by the chief justice to stay the move, which it termed as an "encounter of the Constitution".
The Congress urged Chief Justice Dipak Misra to hold an urgent hearing on Wednesday night itself since Yeddyurappa is slated to take oath as chief minister at 9 am on Thursday.
In a joint petition, the two parties had sought a stay on the oath-taking taking ceremony of BJP's chief ministerial candidate Yeddyurappa.
The Governor on Wednesday invited Yeddyurappa to form the government, as the saffron party has emerged as the single largest party with 104 seats. Along with one independent MLA, the BJP has staked the claim at forming the government.
However, they are still short of the halfway mark of 112 by seven MLAs.
Whereas Congress-JD(S) alliance has 115 MLAs, just above the halfway mark.
"BJP has 104 seats, how will they prove majority on floor, even if they get some independent MLAs? Only way out is to bring Congress and JD(S) MLAs with them, either by using muscle power or buying MLAs. We have filed a petition urging Governor to give us a chance," Javed, lawyer of the JD(S) and Congress, told ANI.
