Chargers Shock NFL World with Draft Decision: Is Joe Alt the Key to Unlocking Herbert's Potential?

Alright, let's get to the biggest head scratchers of the 2024 NFL draft, coach. You gave us a little teaser on this. Who's the biggest, the biggest "what the heck were they thinking" for you? Well, to me, I go back to the Los Angeles Chargers. Coach Harbaugh comes in, he's got the fifth pick, and yes, I know what he wants, and I know he's got that University of Michigan Midwest mentality. We're going to pound the ball, we're going to run, we're going to be physical, and Joe Alt is going. I think he's going to be a multi-year Pro Bowler. They got a great player. But you're sitting with the fifth pick and you've got Justin Herbert, a franchise quarterback. Last year, you were 23rd in yards per attempt throwing the ball. You were 14th in passer rating with Justin Herbert. And you lost Mike Williams, Keenan Allen, and Gerald Everett. Now you've got the choice of the best offensive players in football. And you can take Brock Bowers, you can take Malik Neighbors, you can take an offensive tackle too. And he's going to be, I know he's going to solidify you for the next 10 years. But man, when I had Peyton Manning, we were looking to feed that machine and put playmakers around him. So we're drafting Edgerrin James and Dallas Clark and Reggie Wayne and Joseph Addai, and just trying to put those playmakers around. You aren't going to pick fifth in the draft many more times. And who did you pass up to take that offensive tackle? I look back at the 2020 draft, the Giants were picking fourth, the Jets were picking 11th. The Giants picked Andrew Thomas, very good offensive tackle. The Jets, 11th, picked Mekhi Becton, very good offensive tackle, highly rated guys. Who did they leave on the board? Justin Jefferson, CeeDee Lamb, Brandon Aiyuk. You know, I want those weapons if I've got a great quarterback, yeah. And I want protection. And that was one of the things that the Chargers didn't have last year, and the year before that, they struggled on offensive line, in particular at the right tackle spot. We know about Rashawn Slater, he's an All-Pro. But you get a chance, and you set it out your mouth, coach, that this guy is going to be a Pro Bowler the next eight or 10 years. I mean, how do you pass that up? I understand. And I wanted the Chargers to take Brock Bowers. I was a big fan of them taking Brock Bowers. But you get a chance to solidify your $200 million quarterback. You don't have to worry about the left side or the right side. And just think, if Rashawn Slater, your All-Pro, if you can't work out a contract with him, then you have Joe Alt who you can move to the left side. So I understand, and this is what the Chargers are probably thinking, "Okay, here in the next year or so, we're going to have to pay him $25, $30 million a year." With Rashawn Slater, do we want to pay him that? You don't want to be in a situation where the Ravens were in with Ronnie Stanley, where they guaranteed him a whole bunch of money and he got hurt. So, I get it. I understand it. I think it's a smart pick. Yeah, it's really interesting to hear you say that, coach, because I also think about the decision, "Do we want to take Jamar Chace or do we want to take Peneh-Sewell?" You know, and that was a legitimate conversation. Exact same conversation, yeah. When you hit it, when you hit it right on the money, it seems like that playmaker worth it. If you get a guy that's maybe your second wide receiver, as it plays out, you're probably kicking yourself going, "Man, I could have freaking had Joe Alt and he'd be holding down the left side." Like a Jamar Chace, there ain't no doubt. It's worth it. You're never going, "Man, I wish we had Peneh-Sewell." So, that, to me, is the question. How great are these CPs? He is a stud. I mean, he's considered one of the top two or three offensive tackles in all of football, correct? He's phenomenal. Would you rather have... No question. But if you're asking me, and I love Jamar Chace, you know, I love Jamar Chace. If I had a chance for either one of those guys, I'm going with the guy up front, absolutely. I'm going with the guy up front that I know is gonna be there for the next eight, ten years. Absolutely. It's not even a question. What would you say, coach, between those two? If I've got a great quarterback and I am building to scare the other team, I'm taking a great receiver. You know, it's just... I understand that philosophy of winning up front, protecting your quarterback. But if I have a chance to draft Jonathan Ogden or Randy Moss, I'm taking Randy Moss. If I've got a great quarterback, yeah. But it's only one Randy Moss. Okay, yeah. Who are those guys? Who are we talking about? Are they the real deal? That guy that can't be stopped. And I guess that's what... That's what you have to evaluate. But guys, at the end of the day, you can't go wrong with either one of these guys. I mean, at the end of the day, you solidified your offensive line or even if you get a wide receiver, you get a big play explosive wide receiver. And coach, you're not wrong for what you just said at all. I get it. And to Rodney's point, they came back for McCown in round two. So they... You know, maybe they didn't get a top-five pick as a receiver, but they got a damn good player in McCown. So you kind of middle out and you get both guys. And I just felt that the Altpic was a reflection of Harbaugh's personality and how, you know, him sending a message, yes, sending a message. Coach, I think that's, for me, for me, in the third round, um, I'm going with Trey Benson. I thought this guy was going to get drafted in the second round. I thought he was tough watching him play at Florida State, just how big and how physical he is. He made a lot of um, guys missed tackles. Just tough. And he runs downhill. It's not a lot of wasted steps. He's not guessing where the hole is at. He sees the hole, he hits it, and he's always moving forward. I think this is an outstanding pick for the Arizona Cardinals. You get Marvin Harrison Jr., you come back and get Trey Benson, I mean, two guys that are going to be two starters from day one. Kyler Murray should be feeling good about himself right now. Chargers' season tied to training camp

COSTA MESA (News4usonline) - Training camp for NFL ballclubs is about getting better. It’s about getting acquainted with the playbook. It’s about getting more familiar with new teammates and adjusting to new schemes to learn. It’s about bonding. It’s also about getting ready to play football at its highest level. The expectations for the Los Angeles Chargers during this training camp is anything less than a playoff bid would simply be not good enough. Tasting the postseason is something the Chargers have not tasted since they lost to the New England Patriots in the 2019 AFC Divisional round. The painful agony of the 2021 season for the Chargers came about in the last four games of the regular season.

Photo by Melinda Meijer/News4usonline The Chargers lost three of their last four games-two in overtime, including a 35-32 defeat in the last game of the season to the Las Vegas Raiders that knocked them out of playoff contention. On the first day of training camp, Chargers head coach Brandon Staley talked about that frustration at the end of the season.   “I mean, I didn’t like the way we finished the season, not getting a chance to compete in the tournament — that stayed with me ever since I walked across that field in the last game,” Staley said. “I liked the way we competed as a team in the last four games, but we were 1-3. That’s the facts. We didn’t finish our season, and I think that we’re going to draw a lot of lessons from that.” The Chargers have never played in a Super Bowl. Based on the moves the Chargers made in the offseason to go along with the veteran makeup of the team, this season could very well be the Year of the Bolts. Those expectations were there last season with Brandon Staley operating in his first year as the team’s head coach. Linebacker Troy Reeder knows something about expectations. Reeder was a member of the Los Angeles Rams team that beat the Cincinnati Bengals to win Super Bowl LVI. His biggest takeaway from being with the Rams is that everything begins now with the foundations of training camp.

Photo by Melinda Meijer/News4usonline “The biggest thing is you have to be built to go all the way,” Reeder said. “That really starts right now and it seems kind of crazy being that it just turned into August right now. The habits that we’re creating right now are stuff that is going to drive us all the way through September, October, November, and then hopefully into mid-February. Just the little things about what it takes and how to stay healthy and do the right things every single day. I was blessed to be around a group that did do it the right way every day and coming out and competing. I see so many similarities in that here. I think this team has what it takes. We just have to put it all together and keep competing in practice and making each other better.” The Chargers had their moments of success but couldn’t quite sustain it over the long haul of the season, and were denied an appearance in the postseason. Justin Herbert still hasn’t made the postseason. This season should yield different results for the third-year Los Angeles Chargers quarterback. In his rookie season, Herbert was thrust into the starting lineup at a moment's notice after starter Tyrod Taylor went down with an injury just prior to the first game of the regular season in 2020. He hasn’t left the lineup since. Not only has Herbert injected himself as the team’s starting quarterback for the foreseeable future, but he is also now ingrained as the face of the franchise. Since being tapped as the starter, Herbert has done wondrous things with his strong right arm. He’s broken all kinds of NFL records and has a place in the Hall of Fame. This just after only playing two seasons in the NFL. Now in his third season with the Chargers, throwing for a pile of yards and erasing passing marks are not going to cut it anymore for Herbert or for the Chargers. They expect a playoff run this season. “You just have to compete and you have to execute when it matters most,” Herbert quipped. “Unfortunately, we fell short of that, but I think we have the team, and definitely the pieces, it’s all about how we come together and work as a team. I’m looking forward to the challenge, of course, but a lot of great guys here, for sure.” Even though this is Staley’s second season as head coach of the Chargers, Los Angeles has a wealth of talent and depth on both sides of the ball to make that a reality.

Photo by Melinda Meijer/News4usonline As the team enters the middle and final stages of training camp with preseason home games against the Los Angeles Rams and Dallas Cowboys, the Chargers have the confidence of a ballclub that has already been there and done that. At training camp, the Chargers are putting in the work to try to formulate that kind of atmosphere. So far, Staley likes what he sees from his team as they work out the wrinkles in preparation for the regular season.    “It’s where it should be through seven practices,” Staley said about the team’s intensity during an Aug. 5 press conference. “You have to build these guys up. You have to build a foundation in pads. I felt like we had two really good days in pads. Then, came back down here in the red area — a really short practice, get an off day, and then come back and have a lot of quality work, then finishing with a scrimmage. That third day, they’re ready to really compete and have a lot of plays and really build some wind. More drives, more substitutions and having to play longer.
