Occupation:  Former intel specialist USMC,  former black market intel specialist (under the High Table),  former black market intel specialist (under Nik Khan),  currently (in NGBA) a silent partner in Tyler’s mercenary business, owner of ‘Turn the Page’ bookstore, and runs a little business (called ‘Seven Holigans’ ) from home selling handmade baby clothes, blankets, hats, mitts etc etc etc.  She also is vice president of the Cooktown Business Improvement Area and secretary for the Chamber of Commerce.
Interests:  gardening, baking,  crocheting, sewing,  buying old pieces of furniture and refurbishing and modernizing them,  paddle boarding, swimming, hiking, camping, bike riding. Loves cheesy 80s and 90s movies and pop music,  and reality tv shows.
Personality:  Esme is a ‘forever optimist’ as Tyler refers to her. A social butterfly who is well loved in their community and by the tourists who visit her store (she was featured in magazines and a ‘places to visit in Australia’ documentary) where she doesn’t just sell books, but homemade pies, cakes, muffins, cookies and other various goodies.   She is warm and friendly and a little too trustworthy.   She is highly intelligent and has a quick and playful wit, but can be cutting and hurtful if deserved.   She describes herself as ‘slightly neurotic with a hefty serving of anxiety’.  She is compassionate and understanding, but do not cross her.  Do not betray her confidence or hurt her family in any way. She may be small, but she can more than hold her own and won’t think twice about enacting revenge.
Background: a graduate of Arizona State University, Esme holds a degree in psychology.  Served in the USMC as an intel specialist in Iraq and Afghanistan.  Married a superior from USMC who was sixteen years her senior, but the relationship crumbled due to abuse (of all kinds). She met Tyler through Nik Khan, who -in a tweaked storyline from the first Extraction- needed the two of them to team up in Dhaka to find Ovi so Tyler could then extract him. After the incident on the bridge,  Esme stayed by Tyler’s first in a Mumbai hospital and then one in Sydney, Australia.   In the series, they settled down in Sydney after his release and that year she gave birth to their first, a daughter they named Amelia Grace Rake.
In ‘Lost and Found’, they lived in Tyler’s shack (featured in the movie) in The Kimberley.  They eventually (after a four-year separation) settle in Broome.

"Attack on American Free Enterprise System"
That about adding Regan's inauguration got me to thinking. I wonder of there's a correlation between the recipients of The Powell Memo and financial contributors to Ronald Reagan's election campaign.
On August 23, 1971, less than two months before he was nominated to serve as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, Lewis F. Powell, Jr. mailed a confidential memorandum to his friend Eugene B. Sydnor, Jr., Chair of the Education Committee of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. The memo was titled Attack On American Free Enterprise System and outlined ways in which business should defend and counter attack against a "broad attack" from "disquieting voices."
Initially the memo was viewed, and praised, by only a select few within the Chamber. That all changed on September 28 & 29, 1972, when the leaked document was the topic of negative treatment in syndicated newspaper columnist Jack Anderson's Washington Merry Go Round. With quotations from the document now public, the Chamber published it in full in Washington Report, the Chamber's newsletter. An off-print of the memo was made available to anyone requesting it from the Chamber.
Interest in the memorandum was revived in the early 1990s. The Alliance for Justice's 1993 report, Justice for Sale, mentions it prominently. The case for the memo being a seminal document in the neoconservative movement in the U.S. was made in 2000 with the publication of John B. Judis’s The Paradox of American Democracy. The Internet became a medium for access to the memo and for posting articles about it. Mediatransparency.org was one of the first World Wide Web sites to feature the memo, as was the official site of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. Today the memo is both credited as having "changed America" and scorned as being "far out of touch with the concerns and structures of the current right."
Whatever it's influence, it has been and remains today the single most requested document in the Lewis F. Powell, Jr. Papers. On the fortieth anniversary of its creation, the Powell Archives has here assembled links to the memo and related documents from the Powell Papers. Lyman Johnson, Robert O. Bentley professor of law at Washington and Lee university School of Law, also wrote this piece in commemoration of this anniversary.

James D. (Jim) Edwards, Jr., former top executive with Arthur Andersen & Co. and influential Atlanta civic leader, died July 15, 2023, in Tallahassee, Florida. He was 79.
A loving husband and father, Jim is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Sharon Bordelon Edwards, son David Lee Edwards of Charlotte, NC, sister Carolyn Edwards Smith (Larry) of Greenville, SC, two grandchildren, Mary Zipporah Edwards of Charlotte, NC, and David Basile Edwards of Washington, DC, nephew, Ryan Smith of Greenville, SC, and nieces Nicole Ferris of Jupiter, FL, and Erin Adams of Tallahassee, FL.
Jim was the son of Dr. James D. Edwards and Elizabeth Reynolds Edwards, and was born in Cleveland, TN, on November 4, 1943, and raised in Greenville, SC. He graduated first in his senior class from Bob Jones Academy, where he was elected senior class president and president of the student body. He graduated with a degree in Accounting, with honors, from Bob Jones University in Greenville, SC.
Jim spent his entire professional career with the public accounting firm Arthur Andersen & Co. He was hired as a staff accountant in 1964 and began a stellar rise that would lead to the No. 3 position in an organization with more than 85,000 employees operating in 84 countries. Before he reached the age of 30, he was admitted to partnership in 1973, making him the youngest ever to achieve this level. In 1979, he became the Managing Partner of the Atlanta office and ushered in an era of unprecedented growth. During his tenure, the office prospered and expanded from less than 400 to more than 900 professional employees. Arthur Andersen, as the largest such firm in Atlanta, grew to nearly twice the size of their closest competitors, and were auditors of over 40% of the top 50 public companies in Georgia. In 1987, when he was 44 years old, Jim became responsible for managing North American operations comprising 85 offices and 20,000 employees, and was elevated to Arthur Andersen's Executive Committee. In 1989, he became Managing Partner for North and South America. Until his retirement in 2002, he served as Managing Partner for Global Markets.
Jim was generous in devoting time and resources to numerous civic and charitable organizations in the city he loved - Atlanta, Georgia. His service included terms as Board member or Chairman of numerous nonprofit organizations, including Central Atlanta Progress, Metropolitan United Way, Atlanta Chamber of Commerce, Metro Atlanta Salvation Army, Atlanta Junior Achievement, National Junior Achievement, Woodruff Arts Center, and the Cousins Family Foundation.
At the conclusion of his career with Arthur Andersen, Jim served on the Board of Directors of various publicly traded companies, including IMS Health, Inc., Crawford & Company, Cousins Properties, Inc., Huron Consulting Group, and Transcend Services, Inc.
Jim enjoyed competing in tennis and was the perennial champion of the Atlanta Country Club members' tournament. Golf was another favorite pastime, with annual trips to Scotland to play the old courses, and frequent rounds played with his wife at their home courses on Spring Island, SC, and Placida, FL. When he turned 50, he celebrated by making a coast-to-coast motorcycle trip from the Statue of Liberty in New York City to the Santa Monica pier in California. In later years, he enjoyed hiking in Colorado and spent many summer months there.
Jim was a man of rare qualities, capabilities, and interests. His life exemplified success achieved through dedication, integrity, and hard work. His professional accomplishments, outstanding character and sterling personal conduct inspired and impressed his employees, peers, business associates, and virtually everyone who came to know him. He made immense and lasting contributions to his employer, community, family and those who were fortunate to be his friend. In his passing, the world lost a true leader and a man of accomplishments; one who lived a principled life, faithfully followed Christ, and rejoiced in helping others.
A memorial service will be held at the Saint Mark United Methodist Church of Atlanta at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, July 24, 2023. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made, in memory of James D. Edwards, to Mayo Clinic for Alzheimer's Research, Mayo Clinic Florida, 4500 San Pablo Road, Jacksonville, Florida 32224.

Business Leaders Condemn Violence on Capitol Hill: ‘This Is Sedition’
Hours after supporters of President Trump stormed the Capitol, industry groups and C.E.O.s called for an end to the chaos.

Jan. 6, 2021Updated 6:56 p.m. ET
Business groups and leaders of large corporations condemned the violence on Capitol Hill that disrupted efforts to certify the election of President-elect Joseph R. Biden Jr. on Wednesday.
Hours after supporters of President Trump forced lawmakers from the floors of the Senate and House of Representatives, the Business Roundtable, a group of chief executives from some of the nation’s largest companies, called on the president and other officials to “put an end to the chaos and facilitate the peaceful transition of power.”
“The chaos unfolding in the nation’s capital is the result of unlawful efforts to overturn the legitimate results of a democratic election,” the organization posted on Twitter.
The National Association of Manufacturers, one of the country’s largest lobbying groups, suggested that Vice President Mike Pence should consider invoking a provision of the 25th Amendment that allows members of the president’s cabinet to temporarily remove him from power.
“Anyone indulging conspiracy theories to raise campaign dollars is complicit,” the association said. “Vice President Pence, who was evacuated from the Capitol, should seriously consider working with the cabinet to invoke the 25th Amendment to preserve democracy.”
“This is sedition,” the group said of the actions of the mob, and said Mr. Trump had incited the violence.
The U.S. Chamber of Commerce also denounced the violence.
“The attacks against our nation’s Capitol building and our democracy must end now,” said Thomas J. Donohue, the chamber’s chief executive, in a statement. “The Congress of the United States must gather again this evening to conclude their constitutional responsibility to accept the report of the Electoral College.”
“Today’s riots are repugnant and fly in the face of the most basic tenets of our Constitution,” said Matthew Shay, the president chief executive of the National Retail Federation, the world’s largest retail trade association.
Other business leaders spoke out individually, though many avoided calling out the president and other politicians by name. “I strongly condemn the violence in our nation’s capital,” Jamie Dimon, the chief executive of JPMorgan Chase, said in a statement on Wednesday afternoon.
“Our elected leaders have a responsibility to call for an end to the violence, accept the results and, as our democracy has for hundreds of years, support the peaceful transition of power,” he said. “Now is the time to come together to strengthen our exceptional union.”

Mitt Romney says Trump incited an ‘insurrection’ at the Capitol.

The entire D.C. National Guard has been mobilized.
The chief executive of Wells Fargo, Charles Scharf, called on leaders to “come together to address the divisions in our society.”
“We must embark on the peaceful transition of power to President-elect Biden,” he said.
Michael Corbat, the chief executive of Citigroup, said he was “disgusted by the actions of those who have stormed the U.S. Capitol in an effort to disrupt the certification of the Electoral College.”
The chief executive of Bank of America, Brian Moynihan, called the events “appalling” and said they “underscore the urgent need for all Americans to unite behind one of our most cherished principles: the peaceful transfer of power.”
Sundar Pichai, the chief executive of Alphabet, Google’s parent company, said the events were “shocking and scary for all of us” in an email to employees that was obtained by The New York Times.
“The lawlessness and violence occurring on Capitol Hill today is the antithesis of democracy and we strongly condemn it,” Mr. Pichai said.
Tim Ryan, the chief executive of the accounting firm PwC, formerly known as PricewaterhouseCoopers, was addressing staff during a previously planned webcast as the Capitol was stormed, prompting him to tell employees what was happening.
“Our Capitol building has been stormed by protesters that are resisting our democratic process and are threatening violence,” Mr. Ryan said, according to the company. “I think it is safe to say that this is a surreal day that will go down in our country’s history, and it is devastating to watch these events unfold right before our eyes.”
Dan Schulman, the president and chief executive of PayPal, called the events “shocking and disturbing” and said they violated “the very foundation of our democracy.”
“IBM condemns today’s unprecedented lawlessness and we call for it to end immediately,” Arvind Krishna, the company’s chairman and chief executive, posted on Twitter.
Labor unions also denounced the violence.
Mary Kay Henry, the head of the Service Employees International Union, said the violence was about “wielding the power of whiteness to threaten what we hold dear — the chance for families of every race to thrive.”
Richard Trumka, the president of the A.F.L.-C.I.O., posting on Twitter, called the actions an “attempted coup.”
“We are witnessing one of the greatest assaults on our democracy since the Civil War,” he said.
