The beautiful Gaston School was founded in 1925, and it was built in Joinerville, Texas, to serve the communities of Joinerville, Miller, and Mount Hope. This was during the “oil boom”, and the area was really flourishing. Hugh and Irene Gaston donated the 9 acres of land for the new school to be built on; which was then named in their honor.

In the 1930′s three other local communities joined their schools with Gaston School, and soon there were 10 buildings there. Within the first 12 years of operation, the school’s staff increased from 4 to 65; and the school’s student population jumped from 85 up to about 1,600. The campus included football and baseball fields, several tennis courts, a power plant, a bus repair shop, a home economics building, a cafeteria, and its own water tower. The campus was beautifully landscaped, and it even had a circle drive out front. Soon it received the distinction of being declared the largest rural school in the world.

One of the most-remembered events at the school was the performance in the school’s auditorium by Elvis Presley on Friday, January 28, 1955. The school band and the Band Parents Booster Club sponsored and arranged the event. Tickets for the performance were 50 cents for children and $1.00 for adults, and $95 was earned for the band’s summer trip. Talk about having cool parents!

The school was closed when it was combined with the New London School in 1965; which then became the West Rusk County Consolidated Independent School District.

The campus, which had grown to about 34 acres, was purchased by Church Fellowship International in about 2001, to be used to help young people facing drug addiction or other life challenges. Volunteers worked very hard cleaning up and modernizing the buildings and grounds, but as time passed the number of volunteers dwindled. The buildings currently show signs of needing some TLC. The sign out front says the campus is listed for sale. A local tells us that it’s been for sale since 2004.
