The 1981 abduction and murder of 6-year-old Adam Walsh went on to change law enforcement in the United States. On 27 July, 1981, Adam was abducted from a Sears department store in the Hollywood Mall in Hollywood, Florida. His decapitated head was discovered in a ditch two weeks later by a fisherman over 100 miles away. Authorities searched for leads, and at one point in the investigation, they even suspected that his own father, John Walsh, who would later go on to become the host of America’s Most Wanted.
The case seemed to go cold, until two years later when Ottis Toole confessed to the brutal murder before recanting. Ottis Toole and his partner, Henry Lee Lucas were the tag team from hell, having confessed to brutal hundreds of murders over the span of a few years, although only a few could be corroborated. During the investigation, authorities somehow lost Toole’s impounded car and the machete that he claimed he had killed Adam with. John Walsh still continued to suspect that Toole was the man who killed his son even though the case remained unsolved due to mishandling evidence.
John Walsh became a famous victims advocate and assisted police in closing dozens of cases. In 2008, while on his death bed, Toole confessed to his niece that he did in fact kill Adam Walsh. The police, satisfied with this confession, closed down the case.

Adam Walsh❤️👼
(Warning: somewhat graphic)
On July 27th 1981, six-year-old Adam Walsh was abducted from a Sears department store while shopping with his mother in Hollywood, Florida. Two weeks later Adam’s severed head was found in a drainage canal in St. Lucie County. The rest of his body was never found. A coroner concluded that the cause of death was asphyxiation (strangulation). In 1983, a man named Ottis Toole admitted to the abduction and murder of Adam Walsh. He claimed that he lured the boy into his car with the promise of candy and later strangled him with a seatbelt. Toole was never charged in the murder of Adam, due to a lack of evidence connecting him to the crime. In 2007 allegations were made that the infamous serial-killer, Jeffrey Dahmer, had killed the boy. Two eyewitnesses claimed to have seen him at the shopping center Adam was at on the day of his disappearance. But no evidence connected Dahmer to the murder. Today, it is heavily believed that Ottis Toole is Adam’s Murderer.
After Adam’s death, his father, John Walsh, became an advocate for victims of violent crimes and children’s rights. He founded the National Center for Exploited Children. John was also the host of the famous television show “America’s Most Wanted”.
Adam John Walsh is remembered as a happy child, who brought light into the lives of others. His family still celebrates his birthday every year. “He was a beautiful little boy. He made me a better man.” - (John Walsh, Adam’s father)
