John Dilnot
Bad Apples.
The work of this artist in regard to food intrigued me.
Why are the apples deemed as "bad" as opposed to just being rotten or decayed? There's a good vs bad it seems.
I came across an edition of post cards by John Dilnot, which feature beautiful printed illustrations of various states of apples. In this little book, the artist, John, revisits memories of his childhood when he played amongst apple trees in his grandparents garden. It also tells of when he sorted out the good apples from the bad to store for the winter. In the book, he looks at some of these "bad apples", and displays them in the spotlight, showcasing them all.
The sentimental value of this is quite lovely. There is a nostalgic, childish quality to it. Love its peculiarness!

In spirit of John's miniature book, I made my own.
I love the style of printing used in his work. I might use a similar style when I work into my mini-book. I'm going to use this mini book as a "sketchbook" as such, keeping John Dilnot in mind throughout the process. I'd like to add sentimental value to this booklet too, by adding some personal anecdotes in there, or research maybe.

Artist Book Talk/ Library Introduction
We were introduced to a collection of books and zines, including children's books, in which we looked at how the author made the books engaging and playful to keep children interested. A lot of the books were very interactive and hands-on, which has inspired me to possibly create a book which includes more involvement from the audience for the Intersections Project. One of the books I particularly enjoyed was Forbidden Fruit, by Dilnot John; it has inspired me to possibly create a photography based book.

Global Capitalism: As US Capitalism Shakes, US Socialism Renews [July 2020]
Topics: mass unemployment undercuts US capitalism: tenants can’t pay rents, landlords can’t repay banks, employers close permanently; Trump vs Biden: neither are solutions, the choice is a symptom of system decline; what old socialist responses to today’s crisis would be; what new socialist solutions to today’s crisis could be.
In addition to Wolff’s discussion of the main topics above, he will also cover the following issues at the July 8, 2020, event: why US capitalism has needed racism, and and how it has used it; why US current protests against racism and police violence are so strong.

Concertina book
June 15th 2018
I met with JH to begin my research into making a book of images for my degree show. Following our conversation and developing my initial idea (posted Feb 22nd 2018) I feel that a concertina style book is the best option because:
Its simple to construct so it makes it more in my control.
I have the option to take time to look at the pages individually or simultaneously as one page.
A book provides a haptic experience to the audience which compliments and contrasts my digital animation work
Next:
I have to research the construction of this type of book and consider the arrangement and images I want to use.
I took time to look at examples in the NUA special collection library.
Tumblr media
Artist Stephen Gill’s book A series of disappointments. I liked this because the concertina of images was detachable from the cover, holes punched in the top of each page meant it could be displayed as a single long page so the images could be seen simultaneously regardless of the size or number of images.
Tumblr media
John Dilnot’s book Saplings was remarkable in that if was approx 7cm x 4cm and prompted me into considering the scale of my book. This small scale made viewing all the images at once easy.
Tumblr media
Si Lewen’s book Parade had a separate front and back cover which I felt made it unwieldy and vulnerable to damage when viewing the book. I came with a box to protect the book because of it vulnerability but I felt this distracted me from looking at the work.

Today we start proejct 5, a research project! Im actually quite excited for this one. We went to a special section of the library and looked at artists books which was really interesting, these were a few of my favourites. The little ones that were screenprinted(?) were by John Dilnot and had a fold out page style to them and they were really cute, using repetitive imagery but they had a unique charm to them. I liked them a lot. Makes me want to make little screenprints or stamps.

Lotte Inch Gallery and Design Shop has recently opened its doors in the stylish shop space at 5 High Petergate. An array of design items and artworks ranging from delightful gift ideas to unique accessories are beautifully displayed in the front shop. A few steps into the back gallery space and you can really feel the care and appreciation of art that has gone into the selection and display of works, without it coming across as pretentious or exclusive. This is certainly an art space which compliments the quaint and elegant character of York.
The exhibition currently on display, titled 'Entomology', gives a nod to the Damien Hirst fever that hit the gallery-going public this summer by exquisitely tying his butterfly works to the delicate insect installations of Tessa Farmer and the miniature box works of John Dilnot. This exhibition is on display until 22nd November and is worth a visit if you find yourself in York city centre.
