"Thomasine & Bushrod" (1974) is a romance-western film written by Max Julien and directed by Gordon Parks Jr. The movie is a spin on the 1967 classic, "Bonnie & Clyde." Julien and Vonetta McGee team up in an underrated film that ventures into the Wild West, where these two lovers commit a streak of crimes over four years. A year removed from his iconic role as Goldie in the 1973 film, "The Mack," Julien continues to expand his versatility as an actor and writer. However, this was Julien's last role until 1997, when he played Uncle Fred in "How to be A Player."

McGee was in the prime of her career as she had established herself as a well-respected actress. The further I look into her career and roles, the more I am impressed. She was a phenomenal individual and easily one of the best actresses of the 1970s. Her role as Thomasine was authentic. She identified well with her character and delivered on multiple levels throughout the film.

Juanita Moore and Glynn Turman also appear in the movie, adding to a remarkable and dynamic cast. But, unfortunately, like many black films that make films that spin on other major Hollywood productions, their budgets are not comparable. However, this film is a solid adaption, which also took advantage of the booming blaxploitation era of cinema. It's an entertaining movie, so I recommend it to you.

Now, fugitives of the law, Thomasine and Bushrod, go on a bank robbing spree while the U.S. Marshall tracks them down.

Was watching an old 1952 movie called LYDIA BAILEY and encountered scenes in which the stars have to don Blackface (! - see above in pics 1 & 2) to escape their Haitian tormentors during the Haitian revolution.  I have heard of the actress who plays the title character, #AnneFrancis, but this was time knowingly seeing Dale Robertson, who plays an American lawyer that comes to Haiti for Ms. Bailey’s signature on her deceased father’s land deed during a rebellion against Napoleon, which he needs in order to get supplies for a new America that is also seeking freedom.   

The only reason to really watch is to catch William Marshall’s bravura performance as King Dick (a dumb azz name) and Juanita Moore (see pic #3)  who fans know best from the 1959 ver. of Imitation of Life) as Bailey’s maid and nanny to her stepson.  Her role was uncredited even though she appears in key scenes in direct action throughout the film. SMH

Also key is that famous dancers Alvin Ailey and Carmen deLavellade also appear during a vodou dance sequence, and black actors Joel Fluellen (also uncredited), Roy Glenn, and Bill Walker

365 Day Movie Challenge (2019) - #22: The Jackie Robinson Story (1950) - dir. Alfred E. Green

In honor of Black History Month and the centennial anniversary of pioneering baseball legend Jackie Robinson’s birth, I watched The Jackie Robinson Story, an unusual biopic in that it stars the athlete himself. While the direction and dialogue are not particularly impressive, made even more obvious by the mediocre quality of the public domain print that TCM showed, the film is absolutely a significant cultural document. Robinson does a wonderful job of portraying his life and career in dramatized form, especially in the tense scenes that delve into the racism that Robinson battled with dignity and grace. Minor Watson also does well as Branch Rickey, the manager who went against the grain by signing Robinson to the Brooklyn Dodgers, breaking the “color barrier” of Major League Baseball; other important supporting performances include Ruby Dee as Robinson’s wife, Rachel (who is still around at age 96!), Louise Beavers as Robinson’s mother and Joel Fluellen as Robinson’s older brother Mack, who was an outstanding athlete in his own right, finishing second to Jesse Owens in the 200m race at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. "Uptight" (1968) is a drama film based on the novel, "The Informer" by Liam O'Flaherty. There is also a movie called "The Informer," released in 1935 and directed by John Ford, and "Uptight" is an updated version of that movie. "Uptight" is an outstanding film with an incredible cast. Cleveland, Ohio, is the setting for the movie, which takes place right after the assassination of Martin Luther King. This film also gives an authentic look into Cleveland throughout the movie, showing you a great sense of the environment. The film star, Julian Mayfield, was only debuting in his 2nd film and first lead role. Still, he was with an incredible supporting cast of actors, including Max Julien, Raymond St. Jacques, Ruby Dee, Frank Silvera, and Roscoe Lee Browne.

The timing of this movie was before the burst of Black films in the 70s, known as the Blaxploitation era. "Uptight" takes a concrete revolutionary stance unheard of in black cinema then. So, there is no denying its influence on black films in the 70s, when several actors saw successful careers during that decade. Booker T. and the M.G.s produced the soundtrack for the movie. This soundtrack is potentially the first of its kind for black films. Using funk and soul bands to make a soundtrack was a significant player in black cinema in the 70s. It's arguable that "Uptight" was a trendsetting movie on multiple levels.

The social commentary within the film is powerful. The film touches on black issues of economics, education, revolution, the justice system, sexuality, the welfare process, unemployment, politics, and much more. Each character in the film represents an aspect of those issues and is responsible for bringing these issues to life.

"Uptight" is a fantastic movie. I highly recommend it for viewing. The high-definition version of the film is very detailed, and the cinematography is brilliant, especially in the surroundings of 1968 Cleveland, Ohio. Also, make sure to do some additional research on Julian Mayfield. His compelling life story helped him write a portion of this movie.
