The best part about these two cdramas, Hidden Love and When I Fly Towards You is not just that it is the best portrayal of a healthy green flag relationship with mutual love and trust as base...

... it's that you can see all that yourself. You aren't told it's a great romance, you see it! Both the actors re allowed to act! To emote! Zhang Lurang, introduced as a quiet, even cold character, shows feelings and emotions and not just after falling in love! This evokes a strong connection where we as viewers watch them fll in love with each other rather than hear it/read it in words

Fell in Love with Hidden Love

I have never watched any K-drama or C-drama in my entire life. On Instagram from time to time, I will come across some cute scenes from such dramas but never bothered to make an effort to watch them. There was this particular scene that has been showing up on my reel, it is of a cute Chinese/Korean guy who is giving a speech and a girl in the audience is trying to take his photo but she keeps adjusting because a professional photographer is blocking her view. Then he moves so that she has a clear view and tells everyone that his girlfriend is trying to take his picture, that is some rare kind of green flag I have come across and trust me when I say this, even if I have never watched any C/K-Dramas, I do watch a lot of dramas and have read even more books. I also find the pair extremely cute looking although aesthetically speaking, Chinese/Korean people are not really my type and I mean that in a subjective way and not in a racist way at all.

So on a whim, last weekend, I started watching the show and by God, I honestly cannot remember the last time I fell in love this hard with a show and a ship. Watching Sang Zhi have an unrequited crush on her brother's older friend to watching Jia Xu fall in love with her once she grows up and everything they have gone through to finally find the love they both deserve was a pure endorphin rush. I have rarely come across a love story, as pure, as innocent, and as healthy as theirs and their chemistry together is just a cherry on the top as was the supporting cast. It was rare to see that almost all the supporting characters also had their roles to play in their love story. There was this episode where Sang Zhi feels heartbroken when she finds out Jia Xu may be in a relationship and I honestly could not take it if this story did not have a happy ending so I had to Google the ending to find out if I could actually continue watching it or not. I just couldn't bear it not having a happy ending cause Sang Zhi even as a kid loved Jia Xu so purely. They are both there for each other no matter what, protecting, defending, and growing together. Watching this drama was like hugging a golden retriever, that is how stupidly it made me smile throughout, and I just cannot stop rewatching their scenes. Be it their cute scenes when Sang Zhi is still a kid to their grown-up scenes, this show made me laugh, cry, and love with them and to me, that is the mark of a great storytelling.No doubt, this has become my latest comfort show and possibly, one of my favourite dramas. Both Sang Zhi and Jia Xu are such green flags in their own ways and couple goals which is very rare both in dramas and real life. Hidden Love to me is now the epitome of a perfect love story.

“I’m a very generous and gracious person,” Sang Zhi announces one day out of the blue.

Duan Jiaxu and Sang Zhi were spending a lazy afternoon in the comfort of their home, cuddled up on the couch and snacking on fruit as they watched TV.

At least they were until Sang Zhi spoke up without warning, declaring herself to be a most magnanimous person.

(Duan Jiaxu didn’t disagree; he just wanted to know why she felt the need to announce it at this specific moment in time.)

He turns to look at her, tilting his head questioningly. She was stretched out on the couch, her back leaning against his side.

She looks up at him, eyes wide through her eyelashes where he could clearly see mischief swimming in their depths.

He smiles at her, choosing to play along.

“Are you now?” he asks, unable to stop himself from playfully poking her cheek.

“I am,” she nods seriously, eyes flicking back to the screen across from them and popping another slice of apple in her mouth.

Duan Jiaxu’s lips twitch as he tries to hold in a laugh, nodding along.

“And is there a particular example you’d like to share with the rest of the class?”

She looks back up at him then, the slight curve of her lips giving her away. He was asking the right questions.

“You’re too old to still be in class, let alone school,” she says matter-of-factly. Duan Jiaxu is about to retort but she cuts him off as she continues. “But since you asked so nicely…”

She bats her eyelashes at him, then looks up at the ceiling.

“Did you know,” she starts off, arm rising up in the air as she swings it around, “that I,” her hand comes down dramatically as she pokes herself in the chest, “have been letting you,” this time she pokes him in the chest, “live in my heart rent free for….” her hand flies back up in the air, swinging it left and right as she thinks it through. “5 years!” she bursts out, seeming almost triumphant. She giggles at her outburst, tilting her head back against his shoulder to look at him.

All Duan Jiaxu can do is stare at her, momentarily dazed, momentarily speechless.

“See?” she asks, unaware of the effect she has on him. “Generous landlady.”

He feels his heart beating loudly in his chest, feels a pleasant warmth he’s only ever experienced with Sang Zhi bubbling up in his chest.

He’s known this — known about her secret ever since she had rushed back to Yihe for him with her paper stars.

And yet…every time something like this reminds him of how deeply and how long she’s been loving him for…it takes him by surprise.

He always thought he was alone in this world — after his mother left him, after his father had succumbed to his injuries and remained comatose in a hospital bed for years.

But the more he realises how wrong he was, the more it takes him by surprise. Because he…he had never truly been alone.

Sang Zhi had always been there for him. Carrying him in her heart this entire time.

He loses himself in his thoughts, in her eyes, and it’s only when her smile starts to falter does he snap out of it.

He turns slightly to better face her, careful not to jostle her, and reaches out to cradle her (still upside down) face in his hands.

His thumbs swipe gently across her cheeks, fingers gently holding onto the most precious person to him ever.

He sees the question in her eyes, but he just shakes his head at her as a small smile starts to grow on his lips.

Leaning down, he presses a lingering kiss to the crown of her head, then pulls back just enough to see her expression. Her smile is now softer, reassured, while here eyes start to shimmer brighter in the afternoon light.

He then leans back down, pressing a kiss to her forehead. Than her left temple. Right. The spot above her right eyebrow. Left. Her eyes flutter shut at his ministrations, allowing him to move onto her eyelids.

He continues to press kisses on every inch of her face until she’s squirming in his hands, the sound of her giggles filling up their living room.

“What- what are with doing?” she manages to breathe between giggles, her arms now reaching up over her head as she attempts to grab hold of him.

“I,” he starts, finally letting her go only to shift their positions, turning her around so that she was finally facing him. “Am,” he continues, crawling over her as he gently pushes her back against the couch cushions. “Paying,” he says when she’s nearly flat on her back. “My dues,” he finishes, now fully hovering over her as they both lay stretched out over the couch.

She looks up at him with those eyes again, shining brighter than the sun or stars ever could. Duan Jiaxu can feel the warmth in his chest stay spread all over his body. His eyes flicker down her face, pleased with himself when he sees her smile still lingering on her lips, her quiet joy now also visible on her rosy cheeks.

“Your dues?” she asks, out of breath. His gaze travels back up to catch hers just as her hands crawl up his neck to softly cup his cheeks in the palm of her hands.

“Mm,” he replies, bracing himself with his arms on either side of her head. “I’m finally paying my rent.” He slowly lowers himself closer to her, only stopping when he’s in reach of her face. Placing a soft kiss to the tip of her nose, he grins as he adds, “I have a lot of catching up to do.”

No matter how long it takes, no matter what the future holds for the both of them, Duan Jiaxu was certain of one thing: he was going to spend the rest of his life making sure he always paid his rent on time.

And sometimes maybe even in advance.

(and as for sang yan, disregard anything i've told you about his personality in first frost, i'm talking about silly and obnoxious and Untourtured sang yan, the personality and presence we see in hidden love.)

also, slightly related but still somewhat tangential, sang yan is a style icon i'm begging to raid his all-black closet, someone let me innnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn. all black is not as easy a look as it sounds but he makes it work. also jiaxu??? and sang zhi?????? i wish my style aligned more closely with theirs (especially sang zhi <3) — i would model my own clothes of of them sooooo fast. i mean, it's unsurprising that everyone on a TV show has really good taste and style but still; those characters knew how to dress, when can they come and redo my wardrobe, i have like $40, a kettle of tea, and a dream.

… ok this is a REALLY HARD question. i mean, duan jiaxu is THE green flag that has raised the bar (so attentive! so caring! so affectionate! a real man could never) BUT dare say sang yan would have the banter?? he is successful, owns his own bar, and you just KNOW the grumpy x sunshine would be <3 <3
