So, I'm writing a fic (and you know that writing is mostly just staring at a blank cursor, rereading, googling random things for context and actually very less writing than intended)

I found something I couldn't Google. So I have to come up with a few antagonists in the story, and I wanted to them to be maybe some of the most hated people in the Harry/Larry Fandom. Totally something you can't Google. Please help me out with a list! If you can't and you've still read this, thank you.

I suppose everyone will have a slightly different take on this, but I’d say most people hate anyone from Modest!Management, Simon Cowell, Dan Wootton, Simon Jones, Ben Winston, many of the beards but Olivia is probably the one that was most universally hated although back in the day I would have said Swiftie and Eleanor, Briana Jungwirth, Cousin Ashley, Tami and Brett Clark, Rob Stringer, James Corden (funny how he was once so loved in this fandom).

Some people don’t like Nick Grimshaw, and he’s occasionally the bad guy in fics. But just as many write him as Harry’s friend or as a romantic partner for H or L. A lot of people hate Ellen Degeneres and Jimmy Kimmel for the way they treated the boys on their talk shows. And then there’s the crowd who hates Jeff and Irving Azoff.

That’s all I can think of at the moment. But I hope that helps! 💙

I was thinking about the Harry Styles/ Ben Winston CBS sitcom, Happy Together.

When I was a Larrie, the show seemed like a vehicle to erase any trace of Louis: the show was saying, Harry and Louis never lived together; Harry always brought girls back to the Winston attic to bang (or as Ben Winston heavily hinted in the GQ Australia interview, Taylor Swift hung out nude in his kitchen).

In retrospect, the show was HSHQ’s transparent myth-making propaganda. Its purpose was to establish the myth that One Direction might have been a passing teen fad, but Mr. Harry Styles was the real deal, the rock ‘n roller, the genuine It Boy, the natural star. He was the looker, the talent, the charisma. He carried it all; the rest were hangers-on.

[btw this strategy is still HSHQ’s modus operandi, and most of the public bought it hook, line, and sinker.]

Unfortunately, Ben Winston’s hamhanded incompetence with the show’s storytelling crippled any chance of popularity with the general public, and of course 1D fans hated this myth (Harry’s fandom was still majority OT5 and Larries back then).

But they tried. How they tried!

Harry had the urtext rock journalist, Cameron Crowe, writing his first Rolling Stone cover story. Rob Sheffield and Shirley Halperin followed up. Harry had one of the decade’s biggest and most accomplished producers, Jeff Bhasker, lushly delivering a blend of Laurel Canyon/ White Stripes lite sound for his first album (Harry’s fandom still can’t tell that HS1 was a complete Rock Lite ripoff). Bhasker invented Harry’s protean musical taste.

The old money men behind Harry Styles tried to fabricate a rock star legend before there was any actual product. They tried to establish the bandleader-boyband-breakout myth before Harry had released a single solo song. Eight months before Harry’s first single, he was interviewed by Sir Paul McCartney, an actual living legend with sixty years of music lore behind him, as if they were already on par.

And yet…

And yet…

Harry just couldn’t land it. He just didn’t have it in himself, not without the hoopla, without the window dressing, without hands inside the puppet moving the wooden parts. He couldn’t get the big awards or sufficient numbers his first round. Harry failed. He was an embarrassment. He couldn’t do it until Louis was sidelined for two years, and Zayn disappeared from media, and Liam’s mental health destroyed.

With dramatic irony, the go-ahead for Happy Together was discovered on the same day (July 14, 2018) that Louis made his Twitter video, announcing he would be a 2018 X Factor judge, and specifically mentioning that this would, in no way, interfere with his musical career. What an interesting, transparently sad way to announce a judging gig.

What an interesting coincidence, as well, that Louis’ very first solo interview was with Dan Wootton, back in 2017, specifically for the purpose of denying Larry— a fact that Wootton heavily promoted. This took precedence over the discussion of Louis’ solo music, his album, his tour, One Direction dirt, his personal history— of anything else, really.

Denying Larry is something that Harry Styles has never done. Not once in 13 years. (Interesting, as well, that Harry had to do an interview with Wootton for the release of HS1, but neither audio nor video were ever released.)

What an interesting coincidence that when offered the chance, during the Cooper Lawrence interview for Sweet Creature, Harry clumsily tried to play both sides instead of denying Larry. He couldn’t bring himself to say the words. It took him six full years to explicitly dedicate it to his sister. Six years! Baiting his fans is far more important to Harry than Gemma ever will be lol.

What an interesting coincidence that Jeremy O. Harris tagged Harry in the infamous Euphoria episode depicting Larry fanfiction, which made Louis angry enough to tweet about his lack of consent, yet Harry stayed silent. Throwing Larry, and by extension Louis Tomlinson, as fresh meat for Harry’s fetishizing, fantasizing, mostly heterosexual female fans was, and is, a major HS marketing strategy.

I think about Harry’s new-found “best friend” Mitch Rowland, the pizza-parlour story sticking around long enough for Harry’s fans to forget he had 1D bandmates, about Harry’s never mentioning 1D except as “the band,” his mocking tone calling Zayn “Ringo.” “They’re not here, are they?” he had said smugly, triumphantly on SNL, “I am.”

I think about Harry’s statement that making his first album in Jamaica was the “happiest” he had ever been in his career. About Sir Paul McCartney “interviewing” Harry in 2016 (for Another Man) as if Harry were already in the pantheon of legends.

In 2023, Harry’s 1D bandmates are supposed to be gone and buried because they are no competition whatsoever for his natural genius, the entertainment supernova, the quadruple threat to music and movies and stage and television, this one-man theme park, a soulful poet and universal gift to womankind. One Direction was supposed to be just a back story for Harry, the way NSYNC was for Justin Timberlake (the parallels), or The Police for Sting, or Fleetwood Mac for Stevie Nicks (same management tricks).

[And yet, despite the industry shutting him out, despite BBC Radio pretending he doesn’t exist, or Billboard’s misleading headlines, or Greg James saying fans bring tomatoes to throw at his concerts, or Roman Kemp making fun of Louis and 1D, despite Rolling Stone, Pitchfork, and many other media outlets never reviewing an album that debuted No. 1 in the UK and No. 5 in the USA, despite all of that, Louis Tomlinson has survived. He’s made it. He is an industry presence. He’s thriving, with indie artists and bands appreciating his generosity and genuine support. Louis’ opinions and person are respected. Fans pay attention to what he has to say. Critics can no longer ignore his actual value. His judgment has weight. He has gravitas, personality, intelligence, creative talent. And most important to the music industry— Louis brings with him a big fanbase, and the potential for impressive revenue.]

In retrospect, the contortions Harry went through to be an entertainment juggernaut are both gristly and amusing. His chosen personal friends: James Corden, Ellen Degeneres, Kim Kardashian, Rande Gerber, Irving and Shelly Azoff, Lizzo, Jann Wenner so influential in rock journalism— embody a list of the most entitled, narcissistic, abusive traits of the Hollywood rich, but Harry, famously, habitually, lamentably— stays silent. He sides with the abusers and colonizers, because that’s where the money and fame are.

Has it been worth it for him? Harry is certainly one of the most famous entertainers in the world at the moment, surrounded by hype, desired by millions, someone every media outlet wants to interview. His career is lava hot, yet in the midst of this glory, Harry’s story is built on a core of brutality and cruelty, underhanded behavior, an amoral, depthless hunger for fame, transparent sexism and misogyny, a willingness to smear colleagues and partners on his way to the top, good old classism, a talent for politicking and sucking up to power, and an unblinking drive to steamroll everything and everyone in his way. And his worshipful, gullible, obsessive fanbase often imitate Harry Styles’ ethos. His H/Larrie fans have persistently tried to snuff out solo Louis fans and paint Harry as a victim. Multiple Tumblr, Twitter, IG Harrie accounts follow Louis’ every move and stalk solo Louies and Larries by the second. They attacked Liam Payne to an extent that made him feel suicidal. Harry is still young, but has the face and body language of a middle-aged industry player. How long can he be sustained by negative, rather than positive, motivators for his work? How much is enough for him? For a person who craves to be loved (his TPWK motto is aimed mostly at himself), how long can Harry Styles be satisfied with a manufactured, datamined, inauthentic, pretentious façade of a life, where his every thought and action are aimed toward marketing?

In retrospect, Harry has achieved everything he set out to achieve, and seems very happy with the bed he made for himself. One can argue that nothing is consequential in the world of some celebrities except fame, wealth, and power. We know so little about their motivations other than a tiny fraction of the outcomes of their actions. But we do see this fraction, and the fractions add up over time, no matter the data scrubbing and the Google search manipulations and the second-to-second Columbia Records datamining. One Direction is old history, which also means there are lots of fans who have been here forever, and 1D fans do not forget.

Whatever history has in store for Harry, it can never change Harry himself. Throughout his solo career, Harry has made a habit of passing off other people’s work as his own, conflating personal and business relationships, and siding with oppression and greed. That is a truth— good or bad— he’ll have to live with.

I don’t want anyone to be fired. / I'm the anon who sent this ask, back to explain myself better now that I'm slightly less blindingly angry at Dan Wootton. When I said I hoped people were getting fired, I meant Jeff Azoff and the head of Harry's PR, not anyone beneath basically that level. I've fucked up at my job too, but accountability has to run up the chain. This wasn't an issue with the execution of a PR strategy, or the mid-level person in charge of checking that article missing some things, it was a flaw in the strategy itself, which was presumably set at the top.

I know we've been focused (rightly) on the ways this has been horrible for Harry, but it's a broader mistake than even that, I think. Harry did exactly what was expected of him and planned for him, and it resulted in a horrible situation as an extremely predictable result of that plan. They knew doing MP and DWD promo at the same time would be difficult, they should have realized Harry was on the verge of overexposure, and they should have planned at length how to avoid a situation like this. Not only has it hurt their client, Harry, it's put the entire MP team in a bad situation as well. It would be one thing if Michael Grandage hadn't already spoken about how important authenticity and representation was in his casting decisions, but he has. And now he and the rest of the cast can't really defend Harry or even defend the film without potentially outing him. It was always going to be a difficult and delicate line to walk, and this has made it nearly impossible.

Now, I'll admit that we don't know, maybe Harry has been surrounded by people warning him of these potential consequences from the start and proposing alternative strategies and he has been the one to push for this approach. I don't think it's particularly likely, but if that's the case, I take it back, sorry to those people. But Harry needs some real help to figure out how to navigate the situation that his current strategy has helped put him in (helped because like you said... we live in a society), and I don't think the team who devised the strategy that led to this should be devising the strategy to get him out of it.

It suggests to me that they don’t have a better strategy.

Thank you, thank you so much for responding.. i thought you would ignore considering i started off saying am a larrie..i hope that is the case, i hope louis really got it out of his system and healed.. i just hope he knows he is gem of a person from what I’ve seen.. you may disagree with me but i thought they were still together or got together after their definite break up(which most people does not think) in 2022 was because louis wore ‘maison’ shirt on harry’s house album release day.. now in hindsight it kind of pisses me off that he does such things.. supporting harry for his album though he has got over enthusiastic team to promote his work but harry did nothing to show his support for Louis’ album release(paraded in malls with his new person).. later in one of his concerts made a joke that there is no place for short kings in his house and dedicated the one song ‘sweet creature’ which i thought no matter what would stay louis’ to his sister.. its just unfair that louis loyal to a fault does not get what he usually gives to people..🥺🥺 and for some reason he has to face all these troubles from all directions(blacklisting, no proper team to promote his work)

For what it’s worth, I do believe that there was some contact between Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson between 2015 and 2018, even if it was just for strategic planning of their solo careers.

I do believe that some of the “coincidences” were coordinated, and Louis was talked into doing some things demanded from him (the Larry denial on Dan Wootton’s interview, for example), which turned out mostly to benefit Harry’s solo career. And whatever this stunt with Nick Grimshaw was. Maybe these were conditions set by Sony for Louis to be promoted in his own career; maybe he genuinely thought Harry would mutually reciprocate his good will.

I look back on Matt Vines’ following Jeff Azoff in December 2018, right as Louis’ judging on X Factor UK ended, and at the cusp of Louis’ releasing singles for Walls. What curious timing that was! Matt Vines doesn’t follow Niall’s or Liam’s or Zayn’s management.

I look back at the overlapped promo of Walls and Fine Line, and the probability that Harry’s promo was scheduled for his second album to be released in September 2019 (Rolling Stone cover shot in May 2019, The Face cover shoot and interview, and others) but pushed to December because the release of Walls the album was also delayed by Fizzy’s death in 2019)— the way that Sony stacked their release schedules to bury Louis’ album.

And, more speculatively, I believe in some contact throughout 2018 until Louis stopped it, based on various things. It makes sense to me from a songwriting and movement perspective. Believe it or not, there were blogs tracking their flights and locations to prove “the two week rule.” Larries’ boundless invasion of privacy was the reason they always smugly upheld Larry, until they changed their minds and told their followers that couples can spend decades apart, starting around 2018. It was obvious that Harry was in Japan for months in winter 2018, while Louis was in the UK, and Harry spent most of his time with Camille Rowe’s friends, Kid Harpoon, the Queer Eye guys, and possible new gf prospect Kiko Mitsuhara.

In 2019, Louis was still invited to perform for the Hits Live Birmingham concert (May 2019), and he still got a few spins on Hits Live. Capital FM had stopped playing any Louis Tomlinson solo music after December 2017. Louis did a charity performance for BBC Radio in 2019, but they played his solo music minimally.

I think Louis knew, after the announcement of the title of Walls was delayed so Harry could put out the Lights Up music video (on International Coming Out Day, same day as Just Like You), how Walls promo going to go. It would just be Louis and his team going up against the entire UK establishment, who are always going to side with the powerful and moneyed.

It’s funny when Larries say that Louis released Walls on January 31 for Harry’s birthday, because 1. Louis didn’t even remember the release day when he played the game with the Louie, and 2. because of what happened that day. James Corden had Meghan Trainor on Carpool Karaoke that night (her album was released the same day). While Louis was giving his concert in Rough Trade, NYC, Harry was filming a segment in Miami with James Corden’s parents, then preparing for his disastrous pre-Super Bowl gig that got flooded out, then having dinner with Rande Gerber at 1 or 2 AM in Miami, then flying to LA for a birthday party for Jeff’s gf Glenne where Harry was filmed completely blitzed. Very romantic of Harry, wasn’t it?

So I don’t think it’s plausible to think that Louis would consider disclosing any of his future timeline to one of his former bandmates just to be upstaged again, when his bandmate obviously had no hesitation tanking his first album (and staying quiet while his fans told Liam Payne to kill himself after LP1 came out). I think it’s pretty funny in retrospect to see that Liam and Niall had no idea— absolutely no idea— what Louis was doing professionally in 2020, which makes The Snuts’ comment that Louis is “quite private” even funnier. Obviously I think Louis wouldn’t be in a romantic relationship with Harry after all of this.

I think you mean that Louis wore a Maison Margiela shirt the day Harry’s House was released (I still can’t believe that Harry actually ripped off a Joni Mitchell title for a whole ass album). Gentle reminder that Louis has worn Maison Margiela for a long time. It is a design house with witty references that Louis has used to good effect. Famously, he wore a Maison Margiela sweater for the Walls music video (please read the post). I would think that by wearing Maison Margiela, Louis simply likes the designer or is referencing his own relationship to the designer rather than anything else. In addition, as I’ve already said, the idea of “Home” is central to Louis’ personal philosophy. As recently as 2021, Louis referenced the idea of home specifically in relation to writing Common People. I wouldn’t sell Louis short by trying so hard to connect it to Harry Styles.

In general, I feel that Louis’ music and his creative works should be considered as coming from a complete, intact artist who works for himself, with his own ideas, referencing his own life experiences, rather than in relation to anyone else.

Grand Traxelektor 2022 – „Sense”

Prológ: Az évek végén érkezik el a szelektor jutalomjátéka, a Grande Summary ideje. Ilyenkor a Zene a nappaliból 3 halmazos apollóniába transzformálódik, expanzulja magát. Az egyik szobában (Mind) középtempós underground elektronika szól, lehet rájuk táncolni, de nem muszáj, simán működnek hallgatós üzemmódban is. Nem kávéházi háttérzene – vagy ez egy ilyen kávéház - de nem is tolakszik, hogy uralja a közös teret. A kettesben buli van, tánczenék, magasabb bpm-ek illetve masszívabb darabok, Move! A harmadik a közkeletű chill-out színhelyek megfelelője: ambient és ambközeli, kortárs és experiment, downtemp elektronika. Ez a klasszikus zenehallgatás helyszíne, ezért ide kerülnek a látens gyöngyszemei ami hiedelmemnek, hogy a mindenkori elektronikus zene, túl a zeitgeist-jain, létrehoz „komolyzenei szintű” műveket, örök darabokat, mély értelmezéssel bíró alkotásokat. Sense. 85 óra 46 percnyi anyag gyűlt össze 2022-ben, ezt válogattam szét, jelentősen megrostálva az állományt.  Gyakran ér az teljesen jogos kritika, hogy a havi Traxelektorok túl széles horizontot fognak át, és randomba-krosszfédbe módban olyan művek kerülnek egymás mögé, amik kvázi ütik egymást. Ilyenkor év végén ez az ellentmondás feloldódik a hármas szintézisben.

Fú! Minden negyedik tracket visszadobott a Spotify, mintha nem szeretnék (ott valakik, a nemtudjukkik) az ambient-et. Nem örülök. Annak viszont igen, hogy elértünk a harmadik fázisba, helyezkedjenek el kényelmesen, zárják ki a dübörgő valóságot és adják át magukat a zenei élménynek! Mert ebben az online hét és félórában a tavalyi év finom underground szépségei hullámzanak át fejünk felett, lengenek körbe minket, az út befelé vezet. A telefonomon fent van mind a 6 év (2016-2022) összes Grand Traxelektora, sőt a három tematika mentén közös playlist-ek is mentve vannak. A „Sense” nevet viselő pedig komoly funkcióval is bír: stresszesebb napokon, fárasztóbbnak érzett, nem kívánt élethelyzetekben valóságos nyugtató elixírként képes hatni, ernyőt képezve (a nagybevásárlások alatt tökéletesen véd embertársaink kisszerűségeitől, a térben szükségszerűen hallható popfostól, és az egész aktus egy békés, célt szolgáló, zenével finomított eseményhullámmá alakul – slide!). Megint nem fogok neveket kiemelni, egyszerűen túl sokan vannak, és a kisebbek is képesek nagyon kellemes meglepetéseket okozni. A Spotify Playlist fontos hiányzóiról megemlékeznék: Anatolian Weapons (még mindig), Concave Reflection, Dalibor Cruz,  Gazelle Twin, German Army (3), interferenc, Jeff Mills, Marco Zenker, Paralell Manifesto (3), Sabla & Đ.K., Shakali, The Future Sound of London, The Utopian Strong, Zemög – az okok mögött ne DJ G. Soros-s gyanítsák, valószínűleg a szerzői kiadások, vagy a periférián ténykedő label-ek, esetleg a kizárólagos web-release miatt alakult így. Ezzel zárom a 2022-es évet, innentől már előre nézünk, hiszen lassan érkezik a januári Zajok a nappaliból az új megjelenésekkel. Kettőezerhuszonháromra pedig azt kívánom magunknak, hogy aktivizálódjanak újra azok az underground nagyvadak, húzónevek és szuperkreatívok, akik a covid-os év előtt meghatározták, szerzeményeikkel uralták a Traxelektorokat. Egy ötven-százas listát tudnék azokból rittyenteni, akik 2019 óta passzívak, hallgatnak, és igazából fogalmam sincs arról, mi is lehet velük? Szeretném, ha újra élvezhetnénk csillogó szellemiségüket, markáns, jellegzetes és kiforrott szerzeményeiket!
