I got the email today from the ongoing (originally 6 months) Covid study that I'm in, and based on the last blood test, I still have not gotten Covid. They're really clear that the sample tests are For Science, not for one's own medical purposes, but anyway, in a non-diagnostic/non-medical, purely academic context, I am effectively vaccinated and have not contracted Covid at any point, thus far. Which feels like more of an achievment every time.

Anyway, speaking of wild action world cinema (from yesterday), this one sounds bonkers, and I'm pretty sure I haven't done any Indian films yet, so here we are.

Pongal is perhaps THE most popular Tamil festival. Marking the beginning of the very significant month of தை (Thai) in the Tamil calendar, Pongal is a three-day harvest festival that celebrates the reaping the benefits of months-long labour. The first day of Pongal is Thai Pongal and marks the beginning of the month of தை (thai). The second day is Māttu Pongal. As the name suggests, it is the day that farmers bathe their cattle, decorate them with turmeric, saffron and garlands, and feed them food to thank them for their help in producing a bountiful harvest. The final day is Kānum Pongal. Kānum literally means "see". This day is dedicated to meeting with family and friends, catch up, and just have a good time. Jallikattu, also called Manjuvirattu, is another highlight of Pongal festivities- a kind of bull chasing where players have to hang on to a running bull long enough to untie the cloth tied to its horns for a prize. If no one succeeds in doing so, the prize goes to the bull's owner. The most important thing, perhaps, is how communal and inclusive Pongal is. Pongal is a TAMIL festival celebrated by Tamils and Tamil enthusiasts globally. To label Pongal as 'Hindu' is not only a gross misunderstanding, but only adds to the harmful and flawed idea that the Tamil identity is synonymous with Hinduism, which, as we have already seen on multiple occasions, cannot be further from the truth. A common argument is that Pongal is Hindu because it's centred around thanking the Sun 'god'. Nature worship is so ancient it goes beyond the birth of any organised religion, and is a common indigenous practice worldwide, a practice that no organised religion can claim ownership over. So go ahead, eat cakkara Pongal, go out and most importantly, be grateful to the farmers who put food on our table. Jallikattu is a traditional bull-taming sport with strong cultural roots in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. This historical sport is traditionally held during the Pongal festival, a harvest festival observed in Tamil Nadu. Jallikattu has thousands of years of history and is regarded an important element of the state's cultural heritage.

The term "Jallikattu" is derived from the Tamil terms "Jalli," meaning gold or silver coins, and "Kattu," meaning package. Previously, money were connected to the bulls' horns as a prize for those who successfully tamed them. The sport includes releasing a bull into a throng of competitors, and the challenge is for individuals to try and grab the bull's hump and hold it.to it while the bull tries to escape. The individual who successfully tames the bull is frequently rewarded with gifts.

Jallikattu is more than just a sport; it is an integral part of Tamil Nadu's culture. It is regarded as a symbol of courage, power, and heroism. The sport is also thought to help identify and conserve native cow breeds, as the bulls used in Jallikattu are frequently indigenous varieties that are well-adapted to the local environment.

In recent years, Jallikattu has been the subject of controversy and discussion over animal welfare, resulting in temporary bans and demonstrations. However, the cultural relevance and emotional tie to Jallikattu have prompted efforts to preserve the ritual.The state government and several groups have put in place laws and safety measures to address concerns while also preserving Jallikattu's legacy and cultural identity for future generations. The preservation of Jallikattu is about more than simply the sport; it is also about preserving Tamil Nadu's cultural history and traditions, which have been passed down through generations.

Tragedy in Jallikattu

Jallikattu organized in the state of Tamil Nadu caused chaos. Also there was a tragedy in Jallikattu organized in Tiruchi. In Palemedu Jallikattu, one person was killed and 30 others were injured. The injured were taken to the hospital. Also there was chaos in Jaltikattu in Tiruchi. One of the villagers was killed when the bulls ran over them.
