Top 100 Ladies of TV

Looking at old blog posts, many years ago I did a "100 favorite female characters" list, but I have met so many wonderful new ladies now that it is quite out of date and needs a major update to accommodate them. International Women’s Day seems like the perfect time to do so!

Only this time I'm restricting it to TV characters, or I will die of Overwhelm.

Epithets: Chrysostephanos

Golden-crowned, Crowned with Splendor

The compound of chryso ‘gold’ and stephanos ‘crowned.’ Many times the epithet is used in a formulaic manner, to imply beauty, sovereignty, and power on a particular deity. Much like Athene is often called Grey-Eyed, Chrysostephanos is given to a range of beautiful goddesses and nymphs, including Persephone, Phoebe, Hebe, and, most pertinent to my research, both Aphrodite and Hekate.

It also refers to a crown of gold given as a prize for a competition, or for honors done in service to the polis. Several such crowns, often in the shape of laurel or oak leaves, were given by the Athenian League to various individuals and cities to commemorate various events. This tradition carried into the Roman era.

For Herakles, His crown is symbolic of His apotheosis into an Olympian. He is crowned with divine power. Most often His crown is not one of gold, however, but oak or ivy or occasionally myrtle.

Pindar describes Hebe as ‘delightful, golden-crowned’ and associates Her with some sort of fruit, but this is only a glimpse of a story lost to time. Hesiod likewise calls Her by this epithet early on in the Theogony. I dare to think that it is more of a reference to Her beauty and youth than to Her status as one of the Theoi. She can also wear a crown of flowers.

Aphrodite is a Golden Goddess, and many of Her attributes are described as such. From Her hair to Her power, Aphrodite is arrayed in gold. This, of course, includes Her crown:

I will sing of stately Aphrodite, gold-crowned and beautiful, whose dominion is the walled cities of all sea-set Cyprus. – Homeric Hymn to Aphrodite, trans. Evelyn-White.

Again, I suspect that Love is associated with this epithet as an indication of Her power and beauty, as well as Her sovereignty. Of all the Gods known by this epithet, it is Aphrodite who I feel carries it most naturally. And it is to Her that I have offered several golden crown-like hairpieces.

Hekate, so far as I can tell, comes to this epithet late, with the PGM being the only time She bears it. Therein, we read: Swift-footed, brave, crim/son, Darkness, Brimo Immortal, heedful, Persian, pastoral, Alkyone, gold-crowned, the elder goddess, Shining, sea-goddess, ghostly, beautiful… - PGM IV 2241-2358, lines 2270-2274, Betz.

I am reminded that Hekate is called Bright-coiffed, liparokredemnos, in the Theogony. Gold is often associated with brightness in the Greek lexicon. And Hekate is also called bright, and associated with light and with fire. Also consider that Hekate is specifically honored by the Gods and Man according to Hesiod.

Khaire Hekate Chrysostephanos! Queen, Bright and True! You shine, your torches bright, Arrayed in fine gowns and jewels, Graceful mother of Virtues, Soteira! We honor you, Kalliste.
