a new personal blog for various interests.

i spend a lot of time writing pieces about my ocs, and enjoy roleplaying them as well. i have a web of characters that surround my main oc, a garlean engineer for the VIth legion. i hope to share some information about them.

i'm currently looking for other fans of garleans and/or garlemald. i'd like to find other garlean writers particularly, but i welcome anyone with similar interest. i have an appreciation for ishgardians (and elezen) too, with several related ocs. for roleplayers, i'm located on the crystal data centre. i also love everything to do with lore discussion, analysis, organisation, and any new information.

i'll do some reblogging on here, and might post some of my own creations. as this is a personal blog for interests, it'll probably have an array of content aside from ocs. however, a large portion of my time is spent focusing on them.

Junelezen 2022 - Day 1 I Introduction

Noble.

Knight.

Soldier.

Heretic.

Traitor.

Warrior.

Rebel.

Hero.

Ser Faiolan of the Minor House Penderghast, Knight of the Heaven's Ward, has played many roles. From a kid dreaming of adventure he followed a path fraught with danger, betrayal, love, loss, fear, misery, bloodlust, vengeance, justice, and countless other triumphs and defeats. Sometimes bent but never broken, Faiolan has risen above all these things to become the man he was meant to be, one who protects his people and his loved ones without a second thought to how he endangers himself. His strength of character, of arms, and of will has guided him through trial and tribulation to stand amongst the people of Ishgard, Eorzea, and lands further afield as a defender of that which is right and just.

Born in Ishgard to lesser noble House, he has always lived to a high standard set by his parents and by the expectations of his people. Escaping imprisonment for allegations of heresy and enduring a self-imposed exile to Ul'dah where he was forced to trade blade and blood for gil in order to survive. Serving the heretics and so-called traitors of his people in order to bring the light of justice upon a deceptive regime during the Dragonsong War. Fighting the Empire in Ala Mhigo to gain independence for a people not his own, but ones who had similarly had their pride and their spirit twisted and crushed by those who saw themselves as superior. Standing as a bulwark against the horrors and miseries ushered in by the Final Days, never losing himself to that same despair which would consume so many others, even after losing one whom he cared for most.

These are but a few of the moments that have shaped Faiolan into who he is, and yet who he will become is yet to be seen. He has set aside all that he has ever known in search of himself, whether that be who he was all along, or perhaps a version of himself he has yet to discover. The path has been long and winding, and yet I hope dearly that he finds solace at its end... or at least the answers he seeks.

To understand the man, we must walk along that path, and to see where it ends, we must take our place at its beginning. A month dedicated to the elezen of Eorzea, which I shall use to tell what I can of the tale of Faiolan Penderghast.

In Duty, Purpose

  The snowy fields of the Coerthan Highlands were stained with the essence of fallen compeers: Ishgard was on the verge of societal collapse at the hands of its draconic foes from Dravania… those who yet smote at the gates of Ishgard would deal a devastating blow to Foundation, the Brume in tow. Many memorialized statues of Knights of Renown would lay crumbling, defaced by wyrms and their tremendous aerial assault. The rays beyond clouds overcast pierced through the dark, letting through slivers of its holy light on the desecrated battlefield below. Lord Faustin’s retinue lie haplessly on the ground outflanked by the winged cur who would see the lives of men extinguished—The Lord of House de Jardineaux’s magnificent armor gleamed in what little light it could purchase, his warworn frame held taut the grand bow his shot from singing a song of swift precision as it met with Lord Faustin’s now lifeless remains.

Within the trenches dug comrades-in-arms huddled together to shelter themselves from the bloodbath. Bridge seventeen was one of many that bridged the moat that separated the surrounding land of Drachenmoor keep. There was something unforgiving about the innate precision and mental acuity Ishgardian military had over the dragonkith: the arrows flying towards the Ishgardian push were meticulously set ablaze by Ishgardian Thaumaturges with calculated efficacy. Bolts were bent by towershields, raising bulwarks seemingly out of nowhere. While their brethren, warriors of the green unseen by the primitive stock of the draconic army, saw to it that none who dare peek over the parapet escape their lethal poisoned daggers.

The terrifying might of the lance-bearing dragoons ripped and dismembered the comparably larger bodies with ease, like a fisherman in gentle season pulling off limbs of a dead crayfish for sale.Among the soldiers of the onslaught was Aurelien, resplendent in his military-issued Temple Knight armor. His pauldrons bore the symbol of the Order and his halberd an heirloom from long past. In a clash and clang of swords, teeth, nail and claw he sought fights that seemed nearly impossible to win. The elfin Temple Knight swung in windstance. Fast sweeping strike like the aquiline swoop of a predator, both graceful and terrifying. He felled many a heretic around his form, forming a ring of death as the bodies piled around him. You would always find him in the heart of the action, for he –unlike his brother Alois—wasn’t for chairs and lavish celebratory banquets—mere ceremonious in nature, masking the ugly face of wartorn lands.

Rumor had spread through the ranks of the Order of a certain young knight of House Jardineaux precariously pushing forward with unprecedented aggression yet conspicuously avoiding certain death. Members of his company and beyond had vouched for their compeer: arrows seemed to nearly miss him, his form was ever adaptive to the fight before him. The youth of only eighteen winters, he set his gaze heavensward, to the dragoons that flew past the skies. The thrill of battle numbed the thunder of his beating heart, blood singing as the heat rose from his gauntleted feet to the very tips of his arrow pointed ears. His piercingly cerulean hues danced from man to man as he cried out swinging his sword in a crescent sweep with such force that it maimed a few while slashing through the bodies of who dared to approached his blindside….

SEA'S COMMUNITY COMPENDIUM UPDATE

We have a massive one today! Huge thanks to a close friend of mine who sent me every single bookmark of xiv resources she had. 💖

Additionally, a good handful of these resources were sourced from a list originally created by @rinhkitty, which you can find here. I have tried to include the more recent/active of the lot, so it's not a one-for-one. Thank them for a lot of the large scale resources you'll find below! ✨

As of 04/12, I have added the following resources (in no particular order) to Sea's Community Compendium for FFXIV Creatives:

LARGE SCALE

GARLAND TOOLS — Contains XIV resources such as Garland Data, everything database, crafting lists and equipment calculators; Garland Bell, gathering timers, collectable resources and hunt windows; and FFXIV Fisher, daily fishing windows, bait paths and catch checklist. Maintained by Clorifex Ezalor of Zalera.

TEAMCRAFT — Create crafting lists and collaborate with others, set gathering alarms, simulate crafting rotations, and more!

CAT BECAME HUNGRY - FFXIV ANGLER — Contains everything and anything to know about fishing including specific fish guides, location, baits, aquarium fish and more!

FFXIV - CRAFTING AS A SERVICE — Crafting information and planning for FFXIV!

FFXIV GARDENING — The FFXIV Gardening Database is a collection of everything related to gardening in Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn. It was created to organize and visualize the results obtained from crossbreeding.

SIGHTSEEING LOG HELPER — This tool will help those trying to complete their pesky Sightseeing Log by letting them know upcoming weather patterns for each zone!

EUREKA TRACKER — For everything and anything to do with Eureka mobs, tracking and weather patterns.

FFLOGOS — for tracking of items/actions related to Eureka.

FFXIVSQUADRON — A comprehensive tool that helps you assess the success rate of various squadron missions.

FFXIV CHOCOBO COLOUR CALCULATOR — Will calculate what chocobo feed you will need to get from your current colour to your desired colour. *rng not included.

FFXIV HOUSING — A site specialising in the documentation of all housing items available in game.

HOUSING SNAP — A compilation of player-made housing designs. Can be used for inspiration or places to visit!

OLD TUMBLR LAYOUT BY PIXIEL — While not XIV specific I know a lot of people aren't fans of the new Tumblr layout, so this is a fix that will revert it to an as close as possible approximation of the new one. I won't tag the creator as I don't think they're in the xiv community, but it's run by @/pixiel!

HOW TO CURSE LIKE AN ISHGARDIAN — Do you want to make the church blush? Do you want to incur the wrath of Halone? @stars-and-clouds has compiled a list of appropriate curses/swear words for you!

FINAL FANTASY XIV SIDEQUEST GUIDE - HEAVENSWARD EDITION — maintained by @chatty-moogle, this guide explores interesting sidequests in Heavensward that will give you more information about the lore, titbits about locals and other interesting information!

TRUST BANNERS FOR XIV — If you have ever wondered how people mimic the Trust banners used in XIV, look no further! @locke-rinannis has a template for you.

MAKING USE OF RECOMMENDATIONS — created by @autumnslance, this guide will help you make your recommendations tab useful rather than annoying.

Added some additional clarification around large-scale discords/spaces; in particular: Large-scale community discords such as the XIV Reddit Discord, Hunts, GPOSE promotions and broad-space roleplay servers that harbour a large number of people and are publicly available to all. These may not have an RP focus but will assist in other aspects of the game. Also includes well-known tools/resources that are utilised by large groups of people and assist in gameplay elements.

Added a quick-jump menu to the bottom of each of the table of contents menus to assist in navigation.

The Game World is an Abstract

Various dungeons, trials, and instances, take place in regions of zones we cannot otherwise reach. We can see other parts of the world, continuations of those zones, that go off the walkable/flyable map. We only really get parts of the capital cities, more districts and buildings often visible but inaccessible. New areas get introduced all the time, such as Paglth'an in Thanalan--much of which we can't get to, only see as we fly over its golden fields.

But even in the places we can travel physically, those areas are...compressed. Made viable to move for game play purposes. It would be impossible to show the true scale of most regions, most towns, even many buildings; not only would that be a ton of dev time and resources the game cannot budget for, but it would make getting place to place extremely tedious for players.

(They tried to a degree in 1.x, but it was also a lot of "identical tiles duplicated and turned" to give the impression of massive world areas--which also made it hell to navigate in more ways than one)

A good example is the Steps of Faith, the bridges spanning the roiling abyss between mountains and foothills, Ishgard's link from its peak to the rest of Coerthas.

Now that we can fly on Coerthas, overworld, the Steps of Faith look like this:

A very narrow bridge. Not terribly impressive--nor very practical, as it would be impossible to get multiple supply and trade carts in and out (their strict isolation was only really during the most recent Archbishop's nonsense in the last 20-odd years, hence the other city-states trying to get them back into the Alliance), nor march an army across. This is meant to connect an entire city to the world.

In the ARR Steps of Faith instance--reworked as a solo duty where the WoL fights alongside the Scions and various adventurers as well as Ishgardians--the bridges are massive, capable of fielding combat units as well as the giant siege dragon Vishap.

And of course, the great battle on the Final Steps of Faith in Heavensward's patches, where two great wyrms of the First Brood are on the bridges, as well as various other dragons, Ishgard's defenders, and our own final battle against Nidhogg.

In both versions of the Steps of Faith story instances, there are statues, towers, and defenses that simply aren't visible in the overworld versions.

So! Remember: the setting is MUCH larger and far more detailed than can be seen in the maps we have access to as players. The game world is a compressed abstract, travel times reduced for story as well as practical play reasons, and you have plenty of room in your writing and roleplay to expand on and add details to it as needed!

I have a friend who doesn't play FFXIV, can't play it on her aging laptop (don't ask about her salty benchmark reaction video) and won't play FFXIV for reasons (mostly spite but we love her for it).

One day at lunch I told her about Echelons of Etheirys (a community for Regency RP) and said friend declared this was EXACTLY what her masters in regency-era literature was for and her time had come (with dramatic VFX yes), which snowballed into a thought experiment:

How easy can someone who hasn't played FFXIV roleplay within lore?

The answer: @housedeaubemarle , basically RPs written together this month using my charas and hers.

Turns out having friends who talk your ears off about the critically acclaimed MMORPG DOES give a leg up in lore, so if you'd like to read an Ishgardian tale of two related noble houses getting into Regency shenanigans give it a look and see if the thought experiment worked.

We're still taking bets she'll touch the free trial someday. Eventually. Please look forward to it.
