“DAY-O” SONGWRITER DIES AT 95: Songwriter Irving Burgie, who co-wrote Harry Belafonte’s “Day-O (The Banana Boat Song)” and is also credited with authoring the Barbados national anthem, “In Plenty and In Time of Need,” died Nov. 29, the Associated Press reports.

Burgie, known professionally as Lord Burgess, was 95.

MARIO CRAVO NETO, ESPÍRITO SEM NOME

Mario Cravo Neto (1947-2009), o Mariozinho, nasceu e morreu em Salvador, filho do escultor Mario Cravo Júnior (1923-2018), "um aglutinador da intelectualidade na Bahia e ícone da arte moderna brasileira." Assim começa sua cronologia em Mario Cravo Neto Espíritos Sem Nome  (IMS, 2021), um livro que acompanha a exposição de mesmo nome na sede paulista do Instituto Moreira Salles (IMS), que tem em comodato sua magnífica obra que caminhou pela escultura, desenho, cinema até a fotografia, levando a arte brasileira às grande casas de cultura de várias partes do mundo.

  Segundo Marcelo Araújo e João Fernandes, respectivamente Diretor Geral e Diretor Artístico do IMS, é a primeira realização a percorrer em profundidade sua trajetória, estruturando e traduzindo para o público esse pulsar criativo que atravessa todo o percurso de Mario Cravo Neto. Um projeto necessário e urgente para o reposicionamento e a compreensão plena da obra do artista." Uma iniciativa que surge da parceria com os herdeiros do fotógrafo, firmada em 2015 com o Instituto Mario Cravo Neto, com sede em Salvador, BA, dirigido pelo seu filho, o também fotógrafo Christian Cravo, voltada para difusão de sua obra que conta com um arquivo de mais de 100 mil imagens, entre diapositivos e negativos, além de uma vasta documentação que mostra diversos momentos de sua carreira.

A curadoria é dos cariocas Luiz Camillo Osório, professor e diretor do Departamento de Filosofia da PUC-Rio e da designer gráfica Mariana Newlands, como assistente. Trata-se de uma espécie de "retrospectiva compactada que mostra uma trajetória plural que se definiu à partir de uma compreensão de que ele ia produzindo séries muito coerentes dentro delas mesmas, mas cada uma com a sua própria atmosfera, mantendo  os seus traços de articulação e nexos internos." contou o curador a este blog.

  A seleção apresenta as principais séries produzidas ao longo de sua trajetória, entre as décadas de 1960 e 1990. Cerca de 322 itens, incluindo, além de fotografias, vídeos, desenhos, álbuns, documentos e instalações, que permitem, pela primeira vez, um mergulho não somente na obra de Cravo Neto, mas na sua própria existência. O livro é recheado de documentos, anotações manuscritas do artista, imagens de família e amigos, que também compõem os diferentes ambientes de seus percursos. O projeto gráfico de Raul Loureiro e Victor Kenji Ortenblad, a impressão da gráfica Ipsis, utilizando diferentes papéis como Offset, Munken Lynx Rough e Masterblank Linho. A coordenação do projeto é do paulista Sergio Burgi, coordenador de Fotografia do IMS.

Espíritos sem nome nos mostra uma visão múltipla do artista e fotógrafo. Camillo Osório, nos explica que "para quem nunca viu o trabalho do Mario Cravo Neto, vai encontrar um artista plural e atento ao seu contexto de trabalho. Quando ele fotografa na Dinamarca a atmosfera é melancólica. Já em Nova York é mais impessoal, mais urbana. Em Salvador a atenção aos sincretismos, as pulsações cromáticas.  Ele produz heterônimos de si mesmo, a impossibilidade das diferenças, deixando o olhar construir a própria imagem. Assim, muitos espíritos sem nome vão aparecendo em várias séries."

  Em 1964 Mario Cravo Neto acompanhou seu pai em programa de residência artística em Berlim, na Alemanha, ficando lá até o ano seguinte. Faz esculturas em metal e fotografias. Ao voltar faz sua primeira individual em Salvador. Em 1966 faz um rápido estágio no laboratório fotográfico da embaixada americana no Rio de Janeiro com o fotógrafo alemão Hans Mann (1897-1966) que imigrou para a América do Sul nos anos 1930, autor de imagens da arquitetura histórica brasileira. É com ele que o fotógrafo vai aprender fotografia, técnicas de iluminação, enquadramento e  laboratório. Estudou mais adiante com o italiano Fulvio Roiter (1926-2016), um autor mais dedicado ao fotojornalismo e imagens de rua. Tais predicados são notáveis na sua refinada produção, principalmente nas imagens em branco e preto, cujo virtuosismo é  incontestável.

Em dezembro de 1969, Cravo Neto muda-se para Nova York, juntamente com a dinamarquesa Eva Christensen, sua esposa ( mãe de seus filhos Lua Diana e Christian) onde fica até o final do ano seguinte, retornando ao Brasil, após um colapso nervoso. Mas já no início da década de 1970  é um nome conhecido na arte brasileira, o que o leva a participar da 11ª, 12ª e 14ª entre outras Bienais de São Paulo, entretanto com esculturas em vidro e acrílico, recebendo o Prêmio Governo do Estado de São Paulo; no Museu de Arte Moderna e de outras mostras internacionais como Art Systems in Latin America, no Institute of Contemporary Art.  Em maio de 1975 sofre um acidente grave de carro, que o imobilizaram por um ano, o que marcaria seu desenvolvimento artístico, ao produzir imagens mais introspectivas e levando-o posteriormente à uma temporada na Dinamarca, onde ele produz fotografias dos filhos, da esposa e sua família em Ny Hammershot  além de imagens de rua nesta cidade e Copenhague.

 O curador Camillo Osório nos conta que para o já familiarizado com a obra do fotógrafo, as séries feitas da Dinamarca, a série Fogo, e a série Ninhos, ambas still life,  além da série sobre o escultor mineiro Aleijadinho (Antônio Francisco Lisboa ( 1783-1814) são muito especiais a medida que mostram um artista delicado e ao mesmo tempo sofisticado e complexo. Ele também conta que para organização da mostra e livro procurou-se "Descobrir as várias poéticas, camadas desta trajetória, novos recortes interpretativos, que continuam a nos surpreender com uma obra tão livre e intensa." No entanto, revela ele, este é o primeiro desdobramento sobre a obra do fotógrafo, prometendo outros pela frente, com esta parceria entre os institutos.

O livro mostra imagens não muito conhecidas como retratos de Eva Christensen com fortes distorções, feitos em Nova York e imagens em preto e branco desta cidade, intensas de granuladas dentro do metrô, que diferem muito daquelas em cor que vemos no livro Butterflies and Zebras, publicado em 2013 por ocasião da mostra homônima na Pinacoteca do Estado ( Pina_) com curadoria do pernambucano Diógenes Moura, que também traz o que talvez seja o mais conhecido da obra do artista, a série Eternal Now, publicada por ele em 2002, com texto do curador e crítico de arte americano Edward Leffingwell (1941-2014), igualmente publicada em Espíritos sem nome.

 Na obra The Eternal/Now é visível o interesse do artista pelo corpo, que de forma dialógica alcança suas primeiras esculturas. Nas palavras do fotógrafo "No início ( até 1984) estava preocupado com o aspecto contemplativo: o que o modelo ( o olhar meio perdido) conseguia transmitir para mim, através do seu semblante. Depois fui mais eu a moldar os corpos: tensão, fuga, luta, desafios. Fragmentos sintetizados num perfil, pescoço, músculo, veia."

Com uma contribuição biográfica importantíssima, sobretudo porque une suas circunstâncias sincréticas à sua estética, o conjunto de imagens e textos, uma seleção de certa forma parcimoniosa, se pensarmos na vasta produção de Cravo Neto, apresenta momentos felizes e mais críticos, mas essencialmente significativos, dando a possibilidade ao leitor de penetrar um pouco mais fundo nos conceitos do autor, estruturado por suas questões mais espirituais e sua eclética experiência de vida, indissociáveis para o resultado de sua arte.

 "A cor, que já estava presente nas aquarelas e em algumas fotografias de Nova York, ganharia nas ruas de Salvador uma vibração única. Ao mesmo tempo exasperada e contida, a cor é corpo, é arquitetura, é natureza. Ela atiça os contrastes, mas segura a intensidade luminosa." escreve Camillo Osório sobre a questão da cor, como por exemplo, a publicada no livro Laróyè (Artes Editora, 2002).  Trazendo uma referência a divindade iorubá Exu Marabô, ao qual  Cravo Neto chama de Laróyè, uma saudação invocando sua presença e poderes. Edward Leffingwell, detalha na sua introdução: "Deslumbrantes fotografias coloridas de pessoas e lugares. Praias e mercados, ruas movimentadas, prédios antigos, crianças e adultos, dias e noites que se fundem nessas imagens impregnadas do espírito de Exu. Um livro lindo de imagens sangrentas e incrivelmente poderosas."

Quando tratamos da cor na obra de Cravo Neto, surge também a figura do fotógrafo espanhol Miguel Rio Branco, seu contemporâneo em Salvador. Para este, o artista tinha a mesma densidade dramática do teuto-britânico Bill Brandt (1904-1983). "Existia um  drama na luz, as pessoas, as coisas não estavam expostas às luzes frias dos alemães - o que está na moda hoje em dia... E não era alguém preso a uma nota só. Compunha sinfonias com montagens surpreendentes imagens e também peças individuais que nos sacudiam em surdina."

 Incluídos no livro como uma espécie de "fortuna crítica" estão textos da fotógrafa, crítica e curadora polonesa, radicada no Brasil, Stefania Bril (1922-1992) escritos para o jornal O Estado de S.Paulo e revista Iris Foto (1947-1999), matérias sobre Cravo Neto, publicadas em 1981, 1983, 1984, 1986, além de alguns facsimiles destes e de textos não identificados, publicados no Jornal do Brasil, em 1971 e no O Globo, em 1982; material pertencente ao acervo do Instituto Mario Cravo Neto.

Em um dos seus textos, Bril define a práxis do fotógrafo: "No trabalho em branco e preto, o fotógrafo dispõe os objetos no fundo neutro de uma velha lona de caminhão, a única ponte e contato orgânico com o mundo real. O seu humano, isolado em seu habitat cotidiano e colocado nesse universo fechado e ao mesmo tempo sem limites, por ser despojado ao extremo, penetra num clima que convida o desnudamento diante da câmera. Com exceção de alguns retratados é o próprio fotógrafo quem se desnuda, espelhando as suas diferentes faces nos olhares, posturas e gestos por ele próprio captados."

 A crítica compara a iluminação de Cravo Neto à do americano Irving Penn (1917-2009) lembrando de seu livro Worlds in a small room ( Studio, 1980). Entretanto, escreve que enquanto Cravo Neto deixa o retrato "suspenso no ar" sem nenhum apoio em algo familiar, os do americano " manequins estranhos" buscam sustento em objetos familiares que carregam dentro de seu estúdio. Para ela, o quadro do brasileiro " simplesmente acontece" e "se cristaliza num clima gerado pela fusão de nada (fundo neutro), do fotografado, do fotógrafo e da câmera." Com relação a cor, Stefania Bril comenta com precisão e muita poesia - quase uma epifania- o trabalho do fotógrafo, sintetizado brilhantemente no livro Bahia (Rhodia,1980) editado pelo artista baiano Emanoel Araújo: "Ela é toda luz e sol, calor e vento, mar e areia. Ela é o ouro das igrejas, o dourado da praia e do corpo, o azul verde, roxo e dourado do mar, o vermelho-alaranjado quente do dendê, o verde amarelo que veste o corpo da mãe-preta, vendedora de acarajé. Ela é o bronze luminoso do povo baiano. Neste passeio pela sua terra, Mario Cravo Neto capta a luz para misturá-la com todas as cores, pintando a vida baiana com pinceladas voluptuosas, quentes e impregnadas de muito amor."

 Lots of nominations are out. I do have some faves: The Grammy’s went crazy for Lizzo and Billie Eilish. The comedy recording noms went to Trevor Noah, Ellen, Aziz, Gaffigan and Dave Chappelle.**The Sag’s gave love to Leo and Brad for Once Upon a Time… In Hollywood, Of course, Joaquin was nominated for Joker. Most noms went to JJ Rabbit, The Irishman and Bombshell.  In TV there was much ado about The Morning Show, The Crown, Barry, Big Little Lies, Game of Thrones, Stranger Things, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and Schitt’s Creek.** The Golden Globes which will air on Jan. 5 were full of great choices. Fingers crossed for Joaquin Phoenix and Todd Phillips for Joker, Once Upon a Time… In Hollywood and Quentin and Brad and Leo, Knives Out, Kathy Bates, Jodie Comer, Olivia Coleman, Billy Porter, Bill Hader and Henry Winkler and Barry. I hope good things for The Crown, Succession, Patricia Arquette, Helena Bonham Carter, Brian Cox and Kieran Culkin. Ellen DeGeneres will get the Carol Burnett award and Tom Hanks will receive the Cecil B. DeMille award.

The last democratic debates of the year were here and again there was not enough time for Andrew Yang. He did well when he got the time and got to promote his book without that sounding too bad after he was asked whet gift he might give another candidate. Warren made a sound bite with her “wine cave” crack which just made her look petty. Biden and Bernie sounded the same as always. Amy Klobuchar had the best night. She was not shaky and seemed so confident.  Trevor Noah seemed thrilled that he was mentioned. The sound on the microphones was a bit prickly.

The President was impeached on Dec 18. There were plenty of objections and rants from the republicans like they were children. The idiocy that comes out of their mouths is astonishing. Doug Collins, Deb Lasko and Louie Gohmert just seem insane. I don’t understand why there was not more push back when they kept up their mantra about nothing in the Mueller report when we can all see that there was. We are not all stupid. In the end some sort of consequence was finally brought to the man who has been accused of so much in his life. In formal impeachment proceedings there is no executive privilege. Pelosi is mulling over when to send the case to the senate. It is probably a good idea to let POTUS stew over the holidays.
