Look, I’m not saying it’s a good thing, but “engage in major prestige projects that don’t have any immediate practical benefit but serve to demonstrate military, cultural, economic, or political strength and that a state has a capacity to do state-y things” is in fact a core function of states, and since the USSR and the US both had space programs, one of the performative prestige aspects that has attached to statehood since the 1960s is Having a Manned Space Program. It’s a sign you’re rich, technically sophisticated, that you could field ICMBs if you really wanted to, and it’s cool, so it ticks all four boxes. it’s like european monarchs funding colonial expeditions in the age of sail, or having a national airline in the 70s.

(ok maybe more it’s part of the performative theory of superpowerhood rather than statehood stricto sensu, but my point is we may be stuck with it unless and until you can convince everybody a manned space program is not, in fact, cool as hell, and great for bragging rights over smaller/poorer countries, and i’m not sure you can)

oh BOY. i'm legit sitting here trying to think of smth i haven't already loudly broadcasted to everyone sljkla. in high school, me and one of my best friends at the time (we were the bev's, i called her beverly jo and she called me beverly anne) would break into houses for fun. we never took anything from occupied houses, we never caused damage, but in a for-sale house i did steal the like pendant piece from a chandelier and i still have it in my jewelry box like 12-14 years later.

The Russian military released a pop song Saturday fantasizing about wiping out NATO and the US with its nuclear weapons.

The song and music video celebrates the Sarmat ICBM, affectionately referred to as "Sarmatushka" in the title.

It is the latest in a series of increasingly overt celebrations of its weapons of mass destruction, which have increased in salience as Russia struggles with its land invasion of Ukraine.
