#writing #writing advice #polls #I'll go first: #I was reading a book and the prose and dialogue were tonally dissonant. #The villain's dialogue was very flippant and silly and childish but then they would stab someone through the head on the next page. #And then we'd go between silly antics and then someone being decapitated or ripped in half with decent detail. #The subject of the story and the tone of the prose did not match #and it took me right out of the story. #On top of this the pacing was very unsatisfactory. Through the whole book there were only two settings. #We escape setting 1 about halfway through the book. Then we IMMEDIATELY get stuck in setting 2 for most of the rest. #Wait no there was a third but it barely has a presence. #If I were to change it I would adjust the prose to match the tone or adjust the subject matter to match the prose #Either make the subject matter sillier or make the prose more serious and grounded #It took me out of it so hard that I refused to read another book in the series
