As a white woman, I have no right or place to decide how these fans should feel or respond, but for those saying it doesn’t matter because kpop has nothing to do with BLM, let me give you a little history lesson on kpop and the genres of music it is heavily influenced by!

Korean pop music, gayo, or kpop, however you choose to refer to it as, can be traced back to 1885 when an American missionary began teaching American and British songs at schools. More western culture was introduced after the Korean War, when U.S. troops remained in South Korea. Modern kpop began to evolved in the 1990s when Korean pop musicals began to incorporate Europop and popular American music styles. It does have roots in traditional Korean music, however it is actually heavily influenced by western music and culture! Some of the biggest genres influences on kpop include rock, jazz, gospel, hip hop, R&B, reggae, electronic dance, experimental, folk, country and classical music. 

For the sake of this, I’m going to predominantly be focusing on jazz, R&B, rock, and hop hip.

Jazz originated in black communities in New Orleans in the late 19th century and has origins in blues, ragtime, spirituals, classical, and West African music. The 1920s was known as the Jazz Age, and jazz is considered by many to be America’s classical music and one of America’s original art forms. It has many derivative forms, including free jazz, hard bop, modal jazz, smooth jazz, Latin and Afro-Cuban Jazz. New Orleans jazz specifically blends sounds from brass-band marches, French quadrilles, biguine, ragtime, and blues. Swing was also a very popular derivative of jazz in the 1930s with musicians like Cab Calloway, Duke Ellington, Earl Hines, Jimmie Lunceford, and Count Basie.

Rock music originated in the United States in the late 1940s, and began as “rock and roll.” Rock and roll’s biggest influences are black musical genres, two of the biggest being blues and R&B. I can understand why black fans want their idols to support them not getting murdered in the street by police who are supposed to protect them. 

For anyone saying that “this is America’s problem” and “leave it to America to figure out,” World War II happened because Hitler was committing genocide on Jewish people and it took ALL of the Allies, not just anti-nazi Germans, to take down Hitler and the Axis powers. The police and the government are committing genocide on black people. Systematic racism is a disease that the world, not just America, needs to fight.

Meditation is the one thing I would say works for everyone because there are so many styles of meditation. In our eyes, Prayer is meditation. Going for a walk is meditation. Acknowledging your 5 senses is meditation. Contemplating your day, gratitude lists, journaling…. all meditation! It’s all about setting aside time to breathe. Giving yourself space doesn’t always mean sitting in silence. Meditation and healthier habits don’t have to be so taboo.

I am a 25 year old mother of 3 girls. I was able to study herbal sciences in college, after receiving my GED and finishing my high school diploma. I had dropped out my senior year at 17 because of mental health issues. After finishing my high school education, I continued by enrolling in community college courses. Specializing in healing modalities I was interested in. I started a yoga teacher training with Core Power yoga and continued my alternative therapies education by learning hands on from the best of the best where I grew up; acupuncture, massage, aromatherapy, Louise Hay methods, cupping, natural childbirth, midwifery, doula services, and more.

I birthed 3 babes naturally, when my first was supposed to be a scheduled c section. At 37 weeks pregnant I dug my heels in and started researching different ways to birth rather than through a hospital and OB. No offense to western medicine but the constant opinions of “I don’t see other ways to heal” & “my body is too small to birth my babes naturally” didn’t sit well with me. I started seeing a chiropractor and acupuncturist who specialized in prenatal care and set myself up for a natural childbirth at a birthing center.

I created this Club for people like me. New moms, new and old adults, and other dynamics - teens and older generations because I kept seeing suicide and depression rates skyrocket. When I was 17 years old, I had just left my old school of 3 years, after attempting suicide, when the school experienced a shooting due to mental illness. I had lost one classmate due to mental illness, and one dear friend to tragedy, in one day. The entire school, and everyone near, but even more so, another dear friend, was severely scarred for life because of that day.

That was a life changing moment for us all. Then the problem continued happening, but in other places all throughout the United States of America.

Now, a little more about my upbringing;

I grew up in a broken home. Strict rules, religious views so strong but the deep backing was not there, and I didn’t like that I was blaming God for all of the worlds problems or losing so many family members at a young age. I moved a lot, and had a hard time maintaining healthy relationships within my family and friends. I was a serious athlete all throughout high school. I was a first team all American for softball. I trained to partake in Nationals for Track and Field at the Junior Olympics my junior year in high school. I qualified and placed in nationals. My team placed 5th in the 4x800 relay and I was 21st in the nation for the 400m hurdles. I was a big believer in good grades, until it all started to fall. I wasn’t managing my emotions well, my anger was getting the best of me. My parents were separating again, and I was being told I should move somewhere else because it would ease the stress if I wasn’t with my mom and my sister anymore. We had a rocky relationship. We fought all the time, and not just simple sibling squabbles. I felt isolated and alone, and had to move almost every year throughout my middle and high school experiences. I didn’t ever feel like I had a place, or a sense of belonging. It always seemed hard to make friends.

I dropped out of high school at 17 years old. I was kicked off the softball team my senior year for missing practice due to working, and then spiraled from there. I was in a toxic and unhealthy relationship.

I attempted suicide for the 2nd time at 17, and stayed at a hospital while recovering from overdosing on medication.

There is no point where I felt like I knew what I was doing.. I am not perfect, and won’t ever claim to be. I am continuing to grow daily. I am continuing to heal every single day. I am so much different than where I was, and because of that, I share. I will also continue to reiterate; what worked for me, might not work for you, and I am not certified. I have not been educated to be a western medicine practitioner.

My healing journey began back when I was 13. When I wrote my first suicide note, and tied a bungee cord around my neck. When that cord slipped off the post.. I was remembering all the magical things I had experienced up to then. The times I laughed, the times I played, the times I saw beauty in the simple things and remembered how GREAT life can be. I wanted to keep going. I attempted and did not succeed. What a blessing.

Through the beginning of my journey I explored western medicine because that was all my mother knew well, and trusted. She did her best to get me the best care and I am so grateful for the path she chose for me, because I was able to try so many awful things for me, but also found so many amazing things that worked for me. I had to continue to research. I found many alternative healing techniques that were able to get to the ROOT of the problem and not bandage the surface. I wanted deeper healing, and I found small steps. After my friends had passed away and I moved back to Colorado from Texas, I went into a hiatus. I gave myself time to explore new things, and I have to say, I went down a dark path. It all felt so needed at the time I didn’t notice I needed help until after my 18th birthday.

I started using Chinese medicine for healing my legs during my track and field days because I had severe patella tendinitis. I met my acupuncturist, who is still a very good friend, when I was 15 years old. She has taught me many many things over the years; meditation techniques, how to do cupping, and acupressure from home when I’m unable to schedule an acupuncture session. I started studying and using herbs. I began feeling the difference in my life. I started eating more organic fruits and vegetables. Trying new ways to eat healthy and pH balancing foods. Alkaline foods. I was listening to my body. I started taking vitamins. I began dancing for fun and for healing my mind, body, and soul. I started creating healthy habits and routines that matched. Yoga, running, hiking, biking, skincare, intentional aromatherapy, energy cleansing rituals, tarot and other oracle card readings, sound healings, acupuncture, netting, therapy, chiropractic care, massage, facials, enjoying life.. SELF CARE, and not in a selfish way, but in an intentionally healthy way. I was setting aside time for my healing. I was setting aside time to figure out what I liked and didn’t like. I was discovering myself, and continue to do so every single day.

I began studying early childhood development to help heal my childhood traumas, and help me understand how my own children were developing, growing, and learning. I started feeling a pull to work with children even more, so I created Modern Spirits Meditation Club - Kids Editions and created Big Feelings Books, a series for littles, learning about all the types of BIG emotions we can experience.

The bigger picture of Modern Spirits Clubs is starting from the root. If we understand and build a stronger foundation for our children, we build a healthier society as a whole. If we heal from the ground up, we are stronger and better off.

This is a safe space for us all. We, ourselves, know what is right for us on a deeper level. Our intuition is our strongest guide. Psych student here. I keep hearing a lot about hypnotists using Neuro Linguistic Programming and how it can be used in trancey situations but... From everything I've heard, it's basically pseudoscience. Tumblr doesn't let me link to things in an ask, but there's scholarly articles dating back to the 1980's saying that. Even if you don’t decide to get a graduate degree inpsychology, this will really help you if you decide to continue in the field inany way.  

Also- good for you, psychology major, for caring if psychologyideas from hypnokink are evidence-based!* A psychology major who is not askeptic is a poorly-trained psychology major.  You are doing exactly what you’re supposed todo- questioning “common sense” and ideas that are presented to you. In a way,it’s kind of the job of the field to find the holes in “common sense” that noone else is looking for. Good job!

When people in hypnokink talk about neurolinguisticprogramming, they are talking about using a verbal technique (almost a “cheatcode” if you will) as a way of influencing people. This is how salesmen andpick up artists and trainers tend to understand nlp. But nlp actually startedout and was intended to be used as a therapy- often in conjunction withhypnosis. There is no secret,super-effective type of nlp** posted on fetlife somewhere- the nlp we all useis derived from the therapeutic modality.

So- how good is the therapy itself?

If we’re looking to see if a therapy is evidence based, thebest place to look for what is evidence based is the Division 12 website of theAmerican Psychological Association (https://www.div12.org/).(Bookmark this, psychology major!) Under their “psychological treatments” tab,you can search for what are considered the best treatments available forpsychological disorders. You’ll note that nlp is not listed as an evidencebased treatment. (To be fair, nor is hypnotherapy). That’s usually a bad sign.

Let’s move on to litreviews!

If you look further at the few related literature reviews,you’ll see more bad signs. There seems to be very limited evidence basis at allwith more negative than positive results- and the positive results generallyare coming from the lower quality research. I like the one you pointed to anon! Also- This lit review is enjoyably snarky  in the discussion section. This one is more modern and seems more robust.  Either way, the evidence of effectiveness in any of these is pretty scant. (The officialnlp page on Wikipedia, which you mentioned,  is also pretty shady with those damning quotes in the referencesection.)  These lit reviews areprimarily based on nlp as a counseling practice, but there’s also negative information heretoo about individual specialized nlp techniques- like eye accessing and using submodalities.

So- if you want to learn an effective therapeutic intervention,you should probably not put too much time or money into nlp training.

However!

Can knowing nlp can be useful for your casual sexyhypnofetishy hypnotists?

Potentially!

Here are some ways:

1.      It’s a cultural signifier. Since we (and hypnotistsas a community) have decided that nlp is A Useful Thing, knowing about nlpbecomes valuable. Showing that you know nlp (even a little bit) shows that you’vecracked a book/attended a class and you have sought culturally-valuableknowledge. It gives you authority. For example- I usually ask subjects abouttheir modalities (kinesthetic/auditory/visual/some people throw in others). There’ssome mixed evidence on modalities existing but the most and best evidence saysthat the concept and the theories behind it are inaccurate. But! The communitybelieves in modalities. My subject likely believes in modalities- or at least itis a useful thing to have them believe. If I use their preferred modality, itboth shows that I’m listening to them/respecting them and it shows that I knowenough about hypnosis to be trusted. So- I’ll generally still ask about modalities and use them as though they were real.

2.       Theplacebo effect. A lot of what we do as hypnotists is exploit the hell out ofthe placebo effect and people’s pre-existing beliefsabout hypnosis. A spiral, a pocket watch, someone’s eyes- none of these thingshave any power on their own. A bunch of people see my eyes every day andthey’re not hypnotized by them. But they can be very hypnotic when me and mysubject agree that they are! Tricksy language patterns, in my opinion, often worksimilarly to  pocket watches or a spirals. Since I am a hypnotist and I am doinga tricksy language thing, the language thing works- in the same way that myeyes work in the correct circumstances. ***

3.      NLP isn’t entirely ineffective! NLP was designedby Some Bros watching a bunch of good trained counselors and deciding toreplicate their techniques.  Thus, thereis a lot of gently borrowed good counseling technique in nlp! I’ve noticed bothSFBT and ACT tend to teach some ideas that I first saw in nlp- although Isuspect that those may come from a similar parent therapy and not nlp itself.**** Utilizingsomeone’s own language, metaphors, and world concepts (their meta-model, if youwill) when working with them is a good basic therapeutic technique and is utilizedby most evidence- based practices.  Outsideof therapy, there’s very strong scientific basis for ideas like subliminal cuesand priming (although some variations- like subliminal messages- have been debunked).Those ideas are somewhat nlp-connected. 

4.      Feeling like you know a powerful thing is a confidenceboost. Sleezy pick up artists (aka all PUAs) use nlp techniques all the time-some of them successfully. The technique itself may be flimsy, but theconfidence boost of knowing a technique probably boosts their success rate. *****

5.      Increase your punning and hypnotist!joke makingability.

So in conclusion: 

NLP is a big mix of proven counselingtechniques, wild speculation, great marketing, and somewhat outdated linguistictheories all thrown together and pureed in a blender. (It’s kind of like hypnosisin that way- a big mix of scientifically-based phenomenon, artistry,  and bullshit blended together so seamlesslythat it’s hard if not impossible to sort out the active ingredients). There’s afamous book by a therapy skeptic that derides therapy as “the exchange of myths”.  In a similar way, there’s a lot of what we do that could be considered exchanging myths in a similar vein. Brainwashing is amyth. The subsconscious (at least the way a lot of people view it) is a myth.NLP is a myth******. That doesn’t mean that these things aren’t fun or sexy or eveneffective in cases. After all, myths are powerful! 

But yeah- your scientific skepticism here isvery warranted, anon.
