So currently I'm back to my Koopalings obsession, especially with Wendy, who has currently became my 3rd favorite Koopaling 💕
Its funny cause I used to really hate Wendy when I was younger, because I thought she was this whiny, super obnoxious spoiled brat (I blame the cartoons for me having that mindset), but over time, I've started growing to really like Wendy for being a Mario female character who isn't portrayed as helpless or a damsel-in-distress, and I've also started easing up my feelings towards Kootie Pie/DiC Wendy a little bit. I kinda have a soft spot for her now, but she still gets on my nerves sometimes.
While I was in a chat with some close besties of mine on Amino, I came up with a few headcanons for Wendy that are heavily inspired by elements from the New Supers games, the comics, some of the sports-themed spinoff games, and the Super Mario 3 and Super Mario World DiC cartoons.
And before I start the headcanons, yes, I am fully aware that the Koopalings are confirmed to not be Bowser's biological children, and are just his minions, but I don't care about that. I've always seen them as being his adopted children rather than just his other generic entourage of minions. It was also pretty weird with how the Koopalings themselves never really acted like siblings towards one another, and instead just acted like fellow comrades in some sort of military army.
Now for the Headcanons:
• My version of Wendy is like a mix between Chloe from Miraculous Ladybug, and Charlotte from Princess and the Frog. She's a very spoiled girl who loves expensive things like jewelry. While she doesn't cry or throw temper tantrums over the most trivial things like in the cartoons, she still has her short-tempered nature, and can be pretty scary when angry. However, she tends to not let her emotions get the best of her, and uses phrases such as, "I'm too pretty to be angry" in order to calm herself down and cope with stress.
• Just like in the DiC cartoons, she thinks of herself as Bowser's favorite child since she's the most responsible when compared to her brothers. She loves getting the spotlight and attention, and loves being congratulated by her father for her bad deeds and behavior. She also tries her hardest to impress Bowser, and her biggest fear is him being disappointed in her for not being able to get something done on time.
• And like in the DiC cartoons, she still refers to Bowser as, "Daddykins", though she mostly calls him that whenever she wants him to buy her something. Though like her brothers, she does refer to him as, "King Dad" sometimes.
• She doesn't just see Bowser as a money maker who can buy her anything she asks for, she does genuinely love him for all the stuff he does for her and the rest of her brothers. Though I like to imagine that the bond they have is similar to Mr. Krabs and Pearl from SpongeBob. Wendy gets super embarrassed by some of the stuff that Bowser does (especially if they're in public going somewhere fun like an amusement park), but she still loves him deeply in the end.
• She really doesn't like greasy foods such as fries, burgers, or pizza. She prefers to stay on the healthier side, like eating fruits. Though she doesn't like veggies that much, either.
• That doesn't mean she doesn't like candy either, Wendy enjoys her sweets just as much as she loves fruit. Her favorite type of sweets are chocolate based. She loves mint chocolate chip ice cream, hot cocoa/chocolate, and chocolate gâteau. The inspiration for this headcanon comes from Chocolate Island from Super Mario World, the area where she inhabits.
• The characters she has the most beef with are Bowser Jr, Roy, Daisy, and Peach. For Jr, the two are always butting heads with each other because of the arguments they have over who's the favorite child of Bowser. For Roy, it's because he's always trying to push her buttons because of how obnoxiously, "girly" she is. She usually claps back at him by making remarks about his low intelligence. For Daisy, she thinks that she keeps cramping her tomboy style, and sees her as a poser. And as for Peach, she just can't stand her goody-two-shoes nature, and how saccharine she acts. And the fact that her father kidnaps her not just because he wants to take over the Mushroom Kingdom, but also because he's in love with her annoys the hell out of her. That's why she never calls her "Mama Peach" like the rest of her brothers, and instead calls her by her last name, Toadstool, but in a very patronizing manner.
• When she's not battling Mario and Luigi, or starting drama with others, she enjoys hanging out on the beach, swimming, and ice skating. Wendy's favorite seasons are summer and winter. The inspiration for these headcanons comes from Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, and 2, where she serves as the final boss for the water-themed worlds. The other inspiration is from New Super Mario Bros. U/Deluxe, where she's the final boss of the ice-themed world.
• Her favorite music genres are pop-punk, and punk-rock, which is inspired by the person she was named after, Wendy O. Williams. She's the lead singer of the punk band, Plasmatics.
• She loves fashion and designing clothes, with 80s themed fashion being her most favorite type of clothing. This was inspired by her old DiC voice actor, Tabitha St. Germain, who voiced Rarity in MLP: FiM. Rarity is a fashionista in the show, so I'd thought it would fit Wendy lol
• In some media like the Super Mario-Kun, it's shown that she has a thing for Mario, but I just don't see it, tbh. I just like to imagine that she pretends to show affection for Mario in order to piss off Peach and make her jealous.
• Wendy enjoys singing and doing karaoke, but she's VERY tone deaf, and her brothers often call her singing, "the equivalent to nails on a chalkboard". Bowser doesn't like her singing that much either, but he's probably one of those parents who still cheers on and supports their kid, even if they aren't good at doing something.
• Wendy and Birdo are practically besties. They share the same love for expensive jewelry, singing, the spotlight, and they got similar looking bows, too. The two usually spend their time at Coconut Mall shopping for clothes, eating food, or just gossiping and spilling the tea on drama that's been going around in the Mushroom Kingdom.
• Even though she does enjoy a fair fight and will accept a loss, that doesn't she isn't cunning nor sneaky. She'll try different methods of making a competition slightly easier for herself, or her team.
• Out of all of her brothers, the only one she really gets along well with is Ludwig. The two are the most responsible out of all of the Koopalings, and they share similar leadership qualities. Wendy enjoys listening to the music that he plays on his piano, but hates it whenever Ludwig starts being brutally honest about her horrendous singing skills.
• Despite her big-headed and bossy attitude towards her brothers, she does love and care for them all deep down, and always has a blast with them whenever they take a ride in the Koopalings Clown Car, or start vandalizing the Mushroom Kingdom. She won't say it straight to their faces though, because she doesn't like to be corny or sappy lol
And that's all of my headcanons! Hope you guys enjoyed them, have a great day or night, and make sure to stay safe out there.
💍💕💋

RED VELVET and 5 ways to say I love you
Tumblr media
➛ Note: Non-verbal, mind you.
Tumblr media
IRENE
Her hand automatically reaching for a lost strand of hair you haven’t noticed yet. The fingertips feel so soft on your skin, you want to grab her fingers and kiss the top of each one. But these are just thoughts. In reality you freeze, struggling with the fast rhythm of your beating heart. Joohyun smiles softly, quickly going back to whatever it was she was busy with before.
The drastic change in her behavior when your hands pull her hips close to yours. As much as you want to lead her, you turn weak upon looking into her beautiful eyes. Joohyun’s smile melts away, letting something dangerous take place. You cannot pinpoint exactly what it is, but the sight makes your thighs tingle.
Waking up in the middle of the night. Joohyun rarely embraces you when asleep, but at that moment her hands are painfully tight around your torso. In fact, she’s so strong you can’t turn around to check her face for any sign of discomfort. All you can do is remain still, and wait for her to either speak or loosen the grip.
Turning on your phone after it’s completely charged, only to yelp in surprise at the amount of missed calls. All from Joohyun. With a bad feeling, you dial her back. She doesn’t leave you waiting for long. “Why didn’t you pick up your phone? I was worried sick!” You have to pull the phone away from your ear. Joohyun is nagging you like crazy, but you know that she just cares a lot.
The feeling of water washing over your back, as you reach for a bottle of shower gel. But instead of finding the one that Joohyun is so religious about, you pull out the one you’re used to. The realization makes you take a double look at the small shower shelf. You’re 100% sure the owner of the bathroom you’re currently using is your girlfriend, not you. Was it Joohyun’s subtle way of telling you something, or was it just her caring nature that put the bottle on her shopping list?
Tumblr media
SEULGI
Watching her throw herself face down on the spot next to yours. As soon as she turns to show you the tired smile, you’re stunned by the sheer happiness of seeing her. “What? Do I have something on my face?” Instead of answering, you extract a giggle out of her with a tight hug. “You’re going to choke me!” but you know she’s enjoying it just as much.
The plate of french toasts she went out of her way for. It’s a welcome surprise, but it also makes you feel bad. Seulgi waves away any words coming out of your mouth, her shy smile directed at the plate as she awaits the first bite. “Do you like it?” her mouth widens much more when you nod your head yes.
Blaming yourself for ruining her day when it ends with her hand pressing a bag of frozen pees to your forehead. You were supposed to to go out, have fun at a trendy place. Instead, your head collided with a corner of a cupboard you didn’t notice. “It’s okay! Stop frowning.” she gently pats your cheek with her hand. Seulgi’s smile is honest, but you can’t stop the feeling of distaste you have for yourself.
The metal cookie box, hidden between books on a shelf. You still remember the taste of its content, although your primary reason for buying it was the retro packaging. Now, its filled with numerous polaroids of Seulgi and you, taken with her beloved instax. Beneath the photographs lie scraps of paper, with love confessions written on, cinema tickets, restaurant receipts, event leaflets. All working as some sort of proof that what you have with your girlfriend is real.
Her indifference to the fact that she just walked inside your house with a bouquet of flowers. Every week she replaces the previous one with a bunch of fresh petals, never once being brave enough to hand them to you. Instead, the first thing she does after entering, is pull out a vase and fill it with water. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.” Seulgi shyly looks away whenever you ask her about it.
Tumblr media
WENDY
That one evening when instead of letting her sit on the opposite side of the bathtub, you tug her to lean on your chest. She feels small in your hold, but the embrace you’re offering prevents her from sliding down the slick surface. Wendy giggles shyly when she notices the colorful remnants of a bath bomb falling down to reveal naked skin of her legs. “Pretty.” she mutters, the word audible only to you.
Her stiff dancing at your family’s reunion. In a different context, and after more drinks, she would be doing her best to make you laugh with her moves. Yet, curious glances of your aunts and uncles stop Seungwan from anything radical. “Oh my god they’re judging me.” “They are not judging you!” “They’re your family, of course they do!”
Swinging your interlocked fingers while passing other pedestrians on the sidewalk. The night sky is clear, stars frozen under the moon’s watchful gaze. Seungwan’s excited chatter works as a pleasant accompaniment to the walk. You’re listening to her plans, genuinely curious and just as happy to be involved in them.
Squishing her cheeks when she’s not paying attention to you. Seungwan looks offended, frowning at the little pain you’ve caused her. “What was that for?” she asks. You don’t answer, instead hugging her in the middle, and hiding your face in her neck. Bewildered, she laughs awkwardly above your head, hesitating only for a moment, before returning the embrace.
The faces she makes after you call her “baby”. Seungwan’s face is naturally expressive, always going from one extreme to the other. Always making you laugh from the amount of fondness they generate. Still, “baby” is a special type of treat. Seungwan may swear she hates the term of endearment, but you know she doesn’t mean it. Just a look at her face is enough to confirm your thoughts.
Tumblr media
JOY
Walking home late at night. Her body is leaning on yours for support after one too many drinks. Slender fingers eventually curl around your arm, as she laughs at something you said. You think to yourself that she looks the prettiest like that - smiling so widely, she struggles to keep her eyes open. Determined to keep the image of happiness as long as possible, you continue saying nonsense, hopeful her intoxicated mind finds it funny.
The afternoons she decides she wants to eat fast food. You’re not one to decline, especially since it’s her asking. You can’t even act annoyed when her red lips open widely to welcome a burger you’re holding. She has her own food, and you want to argue, but you can’t say no when her eyes are staring into your soul.
Zipping up the material on Sooyoung’s back. You’re biting down the lower lip, trying to ignore the warmth in your cheeks. It should be a normal thing to do. You’re just helping your girlfriend with a piece of clothing way more complicated than a simple T-shirt. No biggie. Then why are you so overwhelmed by everything? As you reach the neckline, your eyes meet Sooyoung’s in the mirror, and you can’t help but look away.
The feeling od disappointment you can’t shake off when the noise of your phone doesn’t announce an incoming text from Sooyoung. It’s someone else, asking you about plans. Although too shy to admit it to anyone but yourself, you’d rather meet with the person you expected to write.
Jumping not at the scare, but Sooyoung’s terrified shriek. Right after, her head hits yours, as she tries to keep down nervous giggles. The stranger sitting on your other side gives her a stink eye, but you don’t comment, instead turning towards her to smile from amusement. “I didn’t expect it, okay?” Sooyoung takes the hand you offer to her, more than satisfied with the result of a little adrenaline rush.
Tumblr media
YERI
A series of different drinks you’ve ordered to taste test, and her overdone frown after having a classic (although too sour) lemonade. She gets angry when you refuse to take a sip of the same beverage. “Suffer with me!” “No!” “Do it!” “Shouldn’t you protect me?” “Shouldn’t you join my suffering?” “That would be very dumb of me!”
Wiping singular drops of rain off of your camera lens. Yerim is shivering under her long trench coat, the cold wind pulling at her ponytail. Aside from you, the photographer, and her, the model, nobody shows up in front of Rome’s Trevi Fountain, everyone scared of the incoming dark clouds. Maybe that’s better. You have nobody to ruin pictures of your beloved.
The maddening silence of your car ride. Yerim doesn’t even look at you, gaze stubbornly turned in the opposite direction. Any words you think of feel useless, so you don’t let anything reach her ears. Even if you’re no longer angry, the atmosphere is just too awkward for you to act upon. Instead, you soak in pity, missing the normal.
Pulling the curtain away, to reveal your styling to Yerim’s expectant eyes. She doesn’t even try to hold back laughter, as you pose as ridiculously as possible. Her hand does a poor job of hiding the wide smile she’s sporting. “What? Don’t you like it?” you tease her, the boa scarf landing around Yerim’s neck in a flirty manner. “No, no.” she snickers “I genuinely love it. Can’t wait to see you dressed in that at my cousin’s wedding.”
Braiding the laces at the end of her scarf as you await a taxi. It’s a cold winter evening, but at least it isn’t snowing. Yerim’s breath takes over your vision every once in a while. You don’t make a move to escape it, content with being so close to her. Even nicer is the feeling of her hands hiding in the pockets of your coat. Specifically, of fingers drumming a tuneless melody on your thighs.

The healing touch
By Lauren Kelmar
Special to The Almanac
The 5-year-old boy was receiving treatment for cancer and staying at the Ronald McDonald House at Stanford with his family. As a treat, he and his dad came down to see the animals at Jasper Ridge Farm, arriving just as the volunteers finished setting up in the outside courtyard.
The volunteers brought along two bunnies, goats, a miniature horse and dogs — a hodgepodge of friendly creatures kept at the farm to provide therapy for visitors.
The boy, who appeared a little unsure of the animals, was coaxed by his dad to pet them. Encouraged also by a volunteer in charge of the bunnies, the boy slowly entered the enclosure and sat down.
Then, one of the bunnies, Pippin — white, with long black eyelashes and matching black eyes — hopped toward the little boy. The volunteer scooped up the friendly creature and asked the boy if he wanted to pet Pippin’s soft fur, telling him the bunny’s name and age. The boy nodded.
The child’s father smiled above the enclosure, watching his son forget, for a few precious moments, about his health struggles. Pippin stayed with the little boy for almost 30 minutes, just sitting in his lap, completely still, and letting the boy kiss and pet him. When the boy and his father eventually left, they wore ear-to-ear smiles.
Making moments like these possible is what the nonprofit Jasper Ridge Farm, located at Webb Ranch in Portola Valley, is all about.
Animals helping children
Wendy Mattes founded the nonprofit in July 2009 on a small piece of land in Woodside. She began adopting miniature horses, rabbits and other friendly creatures to help fulfill the nonprofit’s simple mission: animals helping children.
The seed for Jasper Ridge Farm was planted in 2008, when Mattes’ horseback riding student, a 13-year-old girl, was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor rendering her unable to attend riding practice. Mattes knew of the girl’s fondness for horses and how she was struggling with not being able to see one.
So Mattes devised a way to help the girl and her family: She brought a miniature horse into their home.
The smile that engulfed the girl’s face when she saw the horse enter her living room forever changed Mattes, she recalls, not only because of the comfort the animal provided, but also because her parents were happy to see their child smiling. For that hour, the family forgot about the girl’s health problems, and just enjoyed the horse’s affection.
A few months later, the little girl passed away, but Mattes was so struck by the impact the horse had on the child that she created her nonprofit to help other terminally ill children through animal therapy.
Soon enough Mattes, who still serves as founder and executive director, had adopted almost a dozen animals, the majority from the Peninsula Humane Society, for visits to local hospitals. The animals included three miniature horses, two bunnies, two guinea pigs, two goats, and a cat.
The nonprofit began bringing these animals to the Ronald McDonald House to provide comfort to the terminally ill children and their families, at no charge.
“Animals don’t judge, they love people unconditionally and can sense when something is wrong or when someone needs a little extra love and attention,” Mattes says.
A dream blossoms
In 2012, the organization started its HorseBuddies program, which uses animal therapy to help kids with mental or physical disabilities. It partnered with schools in the county for a three-week session. This was the first of many program expansions.
The nonprofit began growing beyond Mattes’ wildest dreams. But with limited operating space and a small staff, the needs became difficult to accommodate.
“We had more requests for visits than we could imagine or handle,” Mattes says.
After four years of operation, Mattes considered moving locations to accommodate more animals and a growing client list. Around the same time, the nonprofit’s lease expired in the Woodside location.
Riley’s Place and Mattes had great relationships with Webb Ranch, she says. The nonprofit often used Webb Ranch horses for visits, and the Webb Ranch owners loved what the nonprofit was doing. The ranch offered Mattes a 3-acre, rent-free spot in its Portola Valley location. All the nonprofit had to do was raise the funds for a barn. So in 2013, the nonprofit began the long process of moving and building.
There were complications in the moving process, but in 2016 the structure was completed and the animals moved into their new home. At that time, the nonprofit also changed its mission slightly from “animals helping children” to “animals helping people.” Jasper Ridge Farm dedicated itself to helping adults and groups in addition to sick children.
It also adopted new animals, including a flock of chickens, two sheep and more bunnies.
“The Webb Ranch partnership has allowed Jasper Ridge Farm to grow,” Mattes says. “It was a match made in heaven.”
Now, Jasper Ridge Farm has the space to hold programs on the ranch, but still has the option of transporting the animals to the client’s location, Mattes notes.
Those who benefit
Some of the groups the nonprofit provides animal therapy to now include: homeless shelters, domestic violence shelters, the Elmwood Correctional Facility, veterans through the HorseHeroes program, high schoolers through the “de-stress” programs at Menlo-Atherton, Menlo and Castilleja high schools, blind and deaf people, senior citizens, and physically and mentally disabled children through the HorseBuddies program, in addition to terminally ill children.
In 2017, Jasper Ridge Farm served 2,654 children and adults, and the number grows every year. There are five staff members and 116 volunteers.
The farm continues to offer all of its programs at no charge, which means it relies on donations and grants for transportation, vet bills, animal food and other necessities.
Alyssa Houk, Jasper Ridge’s general manager, comes to the farm every day and oversees the day-to-day operations while working on the big-picture ideas with Mattes.
Houk cites an experience involving an 8-year-old special needs boy in the HorseBuddies program as one of her most memorable moments.
A typical HorseBuddies program includes having the kids groom, pet and eventually ride the horses at the farm. But the boy was not interested in any of the animals, Houk recalls. He couldn’t sit still or listen, and was yelling. But at a certain point, there was no more screaming.
“It was silent, and I was confused because this little boy had been yelling the majority of the time,” she says. “I walk around to see him holding onto the end of a horse’s leash with a volunteer in front of him walking the horse.”
He thought he was walking the horse alone; he and the volunteer did multiple laps around the barn, Houk says. “He was finally calm. His behavior completely changed, and he was excited to be here.”
Rachel McGillis, a special education teacher and the farm’s volunteer coordinator, had a similar experience when she took her students to a HorseBuddies program.
Her students had been looking forward to the visit all year, she says, and their behavior completely changed when they arrived at the farm.
“They were all listening and being quiet, which is very rare for them,” McGillis says. “It brought them out of their comfort zone, and they couldn’t stop talking about the visit for the rest of the year.”
Another Jasper Ridge Farm program is called HorseHeroes. This program involves animals helping veterans in partnership with the Veterans Administration Health Care System in Palo Alto.
HorseHeroes uses horses from Webb Ranch to help veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and head injuries, according to the nonprofit’s website. The program is near to Mattes’ heart because her husband is a Vietnam veteran, and she has two sons in the Air Force.
Mattes remembers an incident where an Iraq War veteran named Steve, who had suffered a traumatic head injury while serving, came to the farm to ride a horse. He walked with a cane and a service dog, and was having trouble carrying his saddle.
“I offered to carry his saddle, but he said, ‘If I can’t carry my own saddle then I don’t deserve to ride a horse,'” Mattes recalls. After some struggling, Steve made it onto the horse and rode for a while. He now comes to the farm regularly to ride, she says.
Jasper Ridge Farm volunteers and staff also visit the Elmwood Correctional Facility in Milpitas. The animals have a tremendous impact on the inmates, who are unable to show affection otherwise because of their lack of physical contact with other people, Mattes explains.
The animals also don’t know the inmates’ background or what they did; they are just there to love and respond to the need, she says. “The animals are funny and affectionate. This little goat or bunny is going to love you no matter what.”
Whenever the animals come to the prison, Mattes hears the women weeping with excitement over the chance to hold the rabbits and pet the goats, she says. One woman held a bunny for the entire duration of a visit.
A warden told Mattes that the inmates’ behavior improves before and after their visits, she says.
Mattes credits the farm’s friendly animals for helping her with her own health challenges. She has multiple sclerosis (MS) and believes being around the animals has kept her symptoms in check.
“Sometimes I feel like our biggest client!” she says. “Coming to work at such a peaceful place with affectionate animals helps me.”
