PLEASEEE can you elaborate on the gavinners i cant stop looking at them theyre so pretty
Tumblr media Tumblr media
sometimes i forget that outside of my friends and servers, i don't really talk much about my gavinners boys* huh! so basically, i originally wanted to make them so i could beef up turnabout serenade in my roleswap au, kind of like turnabout samurai where you have a lot more characters which in turn means a lot more suspects!
but then i realized, wait, i need to make them in the canon-verse first before i could make their swap au counterparts! and so now they exist pftt
here y'all go, i'm gonna be copy-pasting the character descriptions i wrote for them during art fight pftt <3
Tumblr media
🥁 DEIDRE MINUENDO
Height: 5'7" (170 cm), 5'9.5" (176) with boots on Birthday: Jul 7 ♋︎ | Pronouns: He/Him, She/Her, They/Them
Deidre is the seemingly gloomy and stoic drummer of the band The Gavinners! At first, it could be difficult to get a read on them but despite all that, they're just like that because they prefer saving their energy. It might not look like it, but Deidre enjoys company even if they're not the most chatty with it and thrives the most when they are around other people (she prefers it if she's around the people closest to her though). Deidre is pretty sensitive and an emotional person even if they don't outwardly express it. To the people close to them, Deidre has a sarcastic streak and can be pretty snappy when it comes to teasing. She can dish it but she can't take it however as they can get slightly irritated when they're teased back. Even if they are a rockstar, they can get embarrassed when people praise or say nice things about them to their face, he tends to brush affection if even if he is secretly flattered by it (he's not gonna admit it though pftt) They also enjoy doodling here and there and like stuffed animals (they have a few of their own!)
Deidre was the closest to Daryan so the events of 4-3 affected him immensely. They felt betrayed and confused and tried to deny that Daryan would be capable of taking another person's life; they scrambled to do everything to protect Daryan from omitting information and even lying on the stand. In the end, all of their efforts were for naught and they felt incredibly guilty for what they've done, especially since she started antagonizing Preston when he was starting to suspect Daryan. They cut themselves off from the group, their job, and stardom. They ended up severely depressed and started to rarely go outside anymore. Only Doremy (Daryan's twin, also a close friend of his) was able to reach him during this time while Viva tried to but he kept refusing to see him. It took them a long time to finally be able to reconnect with the group and it took them a lot of help and support to be able to be well again. Deidre carries Daryan's betrayal to the group heavily and it took a while for her to start forgiving herself.

⚡ VIVA CHI
Age: 25 | Height: 5'9" (175 cm) Birthday: Jan 1 ♑︎ | Pronouns: He/Him
Viva is the lively and energetic bassist of the band The Gavinners! Though he may seem goofy and a little unserious, he actually is pretty responsible and is the mediator of the band (as the eldest brother of his siblings and the eldest of the band, he kind of made that his responsibility). He's a forensic scientist and has always had an interest in science alongside music ever since he was young (he thinks Ema is very pretty but she finds him annoying pftt). Viva was the last one to join the band when they were all in high school and despite his extroverted personality, felt a little shy at the time getting to know a new group of people (it's because Preston was there who he may or may not have crushed at while in high-school.) He's a lover of all things caffeinated (especially energy drinks though he should really pace himself) which isn't always the best match to the fact that he's got terrible anxiety and thinks himself down a spiral when he gets too worried.
Once the band disbanded after the events of AA4, Viva, though left in a bad place with his anxiety shot through the roof, fared better compared to the other members. He tried his best to keep in touch with everyone with varying successes despite Daryan's arrest being fresh and hurt. - visiting Daryan in prison to hear his side of the story - popping in to check at Preston in his office because the guy started to take worse care of himself - contacting Deidre even if she was trying to isolate and cut herself from everyone and looking out for Klavier even if he buried himself in his work He took a break from music like everyone else, he still hopes one day they can meet up and play music again, not even as a band, but as a group of friends who loved creating music.
Tumblr media
🦇 PRESTON KEISS
Age: 25 | Height: 6'1" (185 cm) Birthday: Oct 25 ♏︎ | Pronouns: He/Him
Preston is the mysterious yet magnetic keyboardist of the Gavinners! Tall, dark, and bewitching; Preston is aware of the impression people have of him at first glance and likes to use that preconception to surprise and even catch people off-guard by purposely being silly or crass. He has a number of odd quirks and mannerisms that he doesn't realize he has, people tend to notice but they often let it pass because he is very handsome (pretty privilege lmao). Preston can sometimes be mischievous and finds certain things amusing only to him even if others don't find it as funny. He's always had an interest in horror and the macabre ever since he was a young boy which developed into a great fascination with the special effects used in old and new horror films alike. (He can be a bit jumpy when watching movies even if he loves to do it, he can't help it if the movie gets to him!) He plays up his whole immortal vampire schtick because the fans tend to theorize if he really was one. (He is not, he'd love to be one though pftt) Preston is very stubborn and adamant about his opinions and can be difficult to sway if he thinks he's correct; he is also quite awkward when it comes to personal matters, as can be seen in his strained relationship with his older sister and whatever romantic thing he's trying to achieve with Viva. He's used to acting larger than life when the cameras are on but being raw and honest has him feeling a little embarrassed and stilted. Preston smokes and keeps it a secret. (Don't tell Viva that!)
Preston was the first person in the band to start suspecting Daryan which he mostly kept to himself at first but wouldn't deny when you asked him (Deidre did not like that.) After Lamirior accused Daryan in court, Preston was determined to make Deidre confront the truth (unfortunately, not taking in why Deidre might be upset and in denial about it) which caused them to have a fight (with Viva being unsuccessful in de-escalating it.) After the Gavinners disbanded, Preston didn't feel very well after Daryan got sent to prison and lost contact with Deidre (whom he hasn't talked to since the case. [he misses them.]) He seemed fine afterward with his workload seeming to increase though upon closer inspection, he's started taking worse care of himself, skipping meals, and losing his interest in music. Preston has a lot of baggage to sort through regarding his friends and his family that will be difficult and painful for him to confront, but rest assured, he's gonna come out of it happy and well.
and here's a compilation of some very old turnabout serenade drawings too :^]

apollo justice: ace attorney thoughts
over the weekend I finished playing AA4 so I wanted to try to put my thoughts in order. much to think about etc
spoilers for the whole game obv, but i haven't played AA5 or AA6 yet so any mention of those are speculation lol
I had heard some pretty mixed reactions to AA4 and I had a lot of reservations going in. It's also probably the AA game I've played that I've been the most spoiled for, which is a shame but probably an unavoidable consequence of waiting for the port while engaging with the fandom. I don't usually like being spoiled but I think knowing the broad strokes of what to expect actually helped here. I can imagine an AU where I blitzed through the first trilogy and onto 4 with no idea of what was coming and being... very upset and disappointed by the direction it took. Having several months to brace for things like Phoenix's disbarment, the 7 year gap, Trucy, etc definitely softened those blows and made me more amenable to them than I would've been otherwise.
Cases
For the most part I thought the puzzle solving was good and the pacing was solid. The puzzles were mostly challenging enough to be satisfying to solve but not so challenging as to be infuriating, and I don't think I needed a walkthrough at all. 4-1 is one of the best tutorial cases in the franchise so far (though I'd give the edge to 3-1) and 4-4 was a really cool finale. The middle two cases tbh I also found fairly charming, and there's usually a least one case in the middle that seems to drag forever, so that was a pleasant surprise. I played Investigations 1 right before this, and I thought both the puzzles and pacing in that game were frankly horrible, so AA4 won a lot of points just with that.
I did think Turnabout Corner and Serenade would be more relevant in the grand scheme of things. The half-spoilers I knew had me expecting a much bigger web of conspriacy than we ended up with -- I expected it to be more than coincidence that Phoenix got hit by a car, more than coincidence that the Borginian egg coccoons are related to poison etc ... like... I fully assumed this was going to tie into the atroquinine plot. But I guess not ... ? Lol
Characters
The new main cast are all very likable, despite my initial reluctance to have a new main cast to begin with. Klavier was an interesting change of pace as prosecutor, in that he wasn't particularly antagonistic outside of the court, nor was he particularly preoccupied with winning, but he was still fun and challenging enough to face off against. Trucy was fun and delightfully bonkers as all assistants should be. Apollo's longsuffering exasperation was hilarious. Ema is the BEST I loved having her as the detective I wish she was there all the time.
I loved Beanix, for the most part. I can see why he rubs some people the wrong way, and tbh I'm glad his last canon outing isn't ... this. But I didn't find him wildly out of character, or at least, when he was feeling "out of character" vs the trilogy it made sense given the intervening events. I also thought it was fun to see him from the outside and see what a galaxybrain 5d chess master he is. I do wish we'd gotten to see more genuine moments of him with Trucy.
Kristoph was fun as a villain, though I have to say fandom led me to believe he was much more of a mastermind puppeteer than he seemed to be in reality. I was expecting a whole decade worth of conspiracies! Instead he fucked up once and struggled to fix it for seven years, lol. I also found the Kristoph/Phoenix relationship a) very fascinating, b) not really what I'd been led to believe by fandom (shocker). I like the canon more though -- I like that instead of being a retread of the Dollie betrayal-from-someone-you-love it was two guys who hate each other being forced to play nice as part of their own schemes.
Criticism
I think it's fairly obvious AA4 was meant to be a soft reboot of the series, to pivot away from the trilogy cast and set up our new heroes in Apollo, Trucy, and I guess Klavier. I think this is probably the entire explanation behind Maya and Edgeworth (and others but lbr those are the big two)'s conspicuous absence... but that doesn't make their absence any less conspicuous. I can squint and forgive neither of them being there when Phoenix is accused of murder, even though I find that insane. I can squint around Maya maybe being off in Kurain during the Enigmar trial, even though I think they could've used a line of dialogue to explain it. But then we started playing past-Phoenix for huge portions of investigation and that started to fall apart for me. Sure, maybe he's pushing his friends away because he's depressed, or maybe he wants to keep Maya out of things because he thinks it's dangerous, or whatever -- you could at least throw in a line or two saying as much. Not mentioning them at all and setting AA4 so closely after AA3, where Phoenix fell through a bridge to save Maya and Edgeworth chartered a private jet, just feels ridiculous.
I also think, at the end of the day, the story here was focused on and pivoting around Phoenix. The core question of the game is "what the hell happened to/is up with Phoenix Wright?" I love Phoenix, so that alone isn't a negative -- except that I think it meant Apollo, Klavier and even Trucy felt underwritten. Trucy and Klavier have such personal stakes in the unfolding events with the Gramaryes and Kristoph, but we only spend a little time and hints on how that might influence Trucy, who mostly falls into the AA weird girl pattern of brushing off major trauma instantly. (Maya got this a lot too in the original trilogy.)
Klavier ... I like Klavier, but they did not do much with him. How did he feel about Kristoph going to jail? He doesn't seem to hold it against Apollo, which is uh, noble, but perhaps not believable. He says he values honesty and truth but do we know why?
Apollo, likable as he was, felt like a passenger in his "own" game, rather than a major character. He doesn't even solve much of the stuff happening in the big overarching mystery -- he is Phoenix's avatar in court, presenting evidence and clues Phoenix left for him. Unlike Trucy and Klavier, who I am pretty sure take a back seat from now on, I guess Apollo still has two more games to try and flesh himself out ... lol but I also know fan reception of those two is not great, so my expectations there are minimal.
Overall
A really solid game that I enjoyed playing, though I can see why it's controversial and not some people's favourite, if they really loved the trilogy. I think it's debatable whether this was the best/only way to continue the series after AA3. And I am excited to read and write a billion 7 year gap fics now.

could you imagine being valant in turnabout serenade. like, okay, you’re partnering with an extremely famous rockstar to perform a trick in one of his performances where he’s collaborating with another singer. sure whatever this is kinda cool. and the trick you’re doing is one where the singer disappears midway before returning; to do, that you have to pretend to be her for the first half. this is fine. except when you get your costume you realise the bracelet has the exact same pattern as the one your dead colleague had. what. Huh,
okay, so maybe that singer might be someone you thought fucking Died seven years ago, and you think wait is this why she seemed so familiar, but she doesn’t even recognise you because she has amnesia. and it’s not like you can ask her about it because her manager just got murdered. and during the investigation you talk to the defence attorney on the case and his assistant who is also your dead colleague’s daughter and you’re debating whether it’s a good idea to go “hey so I think that I just found your dead mom” until you look at the defence attorney’s wrist and he has the exact same bracelet as her mother. you are now counting down the seconds before it’s acceptable to just Leave because what the actual fuck. what

Fun fact: the headcanon that Trucy and Phoenix live in the office is not entirely unfounded. In Turnabout Serenade, when you examine Klavier's speakers in his office you get the interaction below. But the hc is not exactly canon because of how vague the information is
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Trucy mentions that at "her place" she can hear her neighbour's VCR turning on (context: Klavier has sound proof walls so if he plays music on his speakers it can be heard in his office only), she also mentions Apollo's voice training getting complaints. Because of that Apollo suggests "having a word with Mr. Wright, too". This can imply 3 things:
The office is Trucy's home, since Apollo has to approach Phoenix about complaints of his voice training.
Her two points are actually not related in terms of location, and the complaints about Apollo are from people at neighbouring locations to the office.
Apollo lives with the Wright's. That would be hilarious but it's an unhinged idea so probably not LMAO
I don't know Japanese so I can't actually check what is canon or not, so take this as you will. If you like the headcanon that the Wright's live in the office you can at least have this vague little thing

part 3 of my "m plays apollo justice" series lets go
parts 1 and 2 here
so i just finished playing through turnabout serenade! and boy. what a case
apollo is genuinely just such a little bitch?? like he says whats on his mind and he does not give a fuck if people like him or not i love that for him. man gets invited by the lead singer of a band with vip tickets n everything and he's still like "this music is hot garbage" right to klavier's face. iconic
and klavier man. first off: he doesnt even give them free tickets he offers them 20% off. why. like man youre rich as fuck you cant afford to give away two free tickets??? anyway he's also still super sweet? man only cares about the truth and he keeps pushing apollo down the path to the truth. its fascinating
also also i found myself being like "man klavier is so put together, i wonder if we'll get a chance to peel back that skin a little bit, see him less composed" and i did get that a lil bit in this case, at least in the beginning. like he's a diva but he was coming apart at the seams after the concert, first time ive seen him angry. i have a feeling that next trial is when he's really going to actually go through it
phoenix, on the other hand, continues to be mysterious. gone for most of the trial on a "secret mission" which if ive seen vague spoilers about correctly, its the jurist thing he's working on? thats about it i only have the name idk how thats gonna change up gameplay. but anyway this man shows up at the last second, gives me the last evidence i needed, and says "yeah i dont really believe in you but you got this" and then dips. iconic. awe-inspiring.
daryan. shark man with skunk boner on his head. what more do i need to say

do you have any advice for writing klavier? your characterization of him is so strong and interesting and I have an idea for a fic I want to write but I can't quite figure out his like.. voice? if that makes sense?
OOOHOHOOHOHOH
putting everything under a cut because i wrote like 1.6k LOL
thank you, first of all!! im happy you like the way i write him :] and i had some trouble getting into his voice at first too! i think its because hes Not Like Other Prosecutors, within the feeling of the games, since he is immediately in your corner with no downsides and almost consistently nice to you.
one important thing about his characterization/voice i think is that "almost," though. approximately once per trial, klavier says something balls to the wall insane, rude, and tactless.
transcript from turnabout corner:
Klavier: ...How ironic that you would kill the one man capable of helping you. You're almost as careless as he was! ...Ah ha ha ha. Wocky: …… Apollo: …… Klavier: Well, now that the place is hopping… Let's get this gig started!
turnabout serenade:
Ema: You... You jerk! Just what was I in here for? Comic relief!? Trucy: Yeah! Apologize! Klavier: Ah ha ha. Oh, sorry!
turnabout succession:
Brushel: Actually, I did notice something when I visited the studio. I'd heard of poison that "takes its sweet time", see! Klavier: ...But not what I've been saying for the last few minutes, apparently.
those are just some favorites off the top of my head. my point is that it's important to not get caught up in the nice guy thing klavier has going on. i actually think he veers more toward "kind but not nice"! he absolutely is a good guy, he's there with you to find the truth and he will weather any storm his fucked up social circle brings him if that means finding the right killer, but he is also very frequently kind of a bitch.
-
his speaking voice specifically gave me grief at first. writing miles and phoenix into scenes together is easier, because phoenix talks like a normal guy who was born in the 90s, while miles is a lot more posh (although miles is also plenty rude, but that's a rant for another time). klavier is a prosecutor, famous, and evidently rich, but he doesn't necessarily sound like that. a lot of his Cool Rock Star Lingo however sounds stilted, too. he's kind of suspended between two worlds and doesn't seem to neatly fit into either of them. i don't think that's a problem that needs solving when writing him though! i think in essence klavier attempts to bring the cool, chill vibe of rock'n'roll into the seriousness of law to loosen things up, and he also brings the pedantic perfectionism of law into music to shape it to his will.
the german gimmick is part of that too, for me. this isn't supported by canon since we never see him off work there, but i just like to headcanon that his go-to german phrases (ie herr/fräulein, achtung, etc) are very much part of a deliberately constructed persona. if he isnt on a stage (and a courtroom counts as one) he has no need for those, so i leave them out. since i personally still write him as a native german speaker, occasionally he'll still slip into real german or struggle with translations for things, but all those little pleasantries he throws around for show fall away when it's just him alone.
-
back to his character, i know we all lament how little screentime he got and how the writers seem to have forgotten about him. and so maybe this was entirely by accident, but just from the way he is presented in aa4, i think klavier presents a very rich character with a lot of seeming contradictions, which of course just serves to make him more complex. here's some facts i just think say a lot about him.
his shoes look like biker boots, so he's wearing proper footwear to ride his literal harley davidson, but he is also wearing the suit he wears to court.
the glimpse we catch of his music sounds like classic hard rock to me, with his and daryan's looks supporting a glam rock edge to it. he says he likes poetry, which makes sense given the fact that he writes lyrics (this is also something the brothers have in common, so it's likely that they grew up with it).
when romein letouse's body goes missing and they have to go look for it, klavier says that he is having fun.
lamiroir's music is nothing like his own, yet klavier clearly appreciates her to the point where he felt it was an honor to perform with her.
when his trial against phoenix comes closer and closer to the point of no return, klavier repeatedly tries to give him an out. i guess this could be construed instead as him baiting phoenix into presenting the diary page, but i dont really know about that. klavier was cheeky with him and kept talking about the old versus the young, but that still implies a knowledge of just who phoenix wright is, who he was up against, and what phoenix stood for. klavier, assuming that phoenix knew that the evidence was forged, told him that he does not have to present it, that now is the time to give up and back out, and then he would have let him get away with it. it's only when the page was actually in the open that he fully succumbed to the belief that phoenix wright was crooked beyond repair, and that he had to be removed from the courts.
he personally comes to the wright anything agency the morning after the turnabout serenade concert, to give apollo the news that machi requests him as his counsel. why did he do this?? phoenix could have been there. klavier didn't have to deliver this message himself. he apologizes for how that evening went, while also fearlessly standing in the lion's den of the guy whose life he (ARGUABLY.) ruined
-
i think one of the most important things for writing klavier is that whatever facet of his life youre writing, he is feeling everything very deeply. he fits right into the artist trope for that. only his art goes further than music, and extends into law.
whatever klavier gavin does, he wants to do it perfectly, and he makes it his very personal responsibility if that doesn't work out. he took it upon himself to register daryan as a witness before apollo could request it. when apollo starts accusing kristoph in succession, he says he wants concrete proof, or he is "off this case." why would he stay on the case with concrete proof? that's his brother. he doesn't have to prosecute his brother. if being "off the case" is an option, then he can and should walk, but he doesn't. klavier sticks things out until the very, very bitter end, because he feels that no one else can, and that makes it his responsibility. and he does not run away from responsibility.
and he's genuine. that's one point i feel like people tend to forget when writing him. the whole rock star thing and the shiny smile can lead you into thinking that everything he does is an act, but i don't think it is. klavier cares very deeply and he shows you this openly. he doesn't fully break down while he's at work, but that only means that he is an adult with a good grasp on his self-control.
which brings me to one more point, and that is the fact that he was a professional at age 17. and not just in law, but also in music. i'm sure we've all heard music industry horror stories, now imagine you're 17 years old and deep in there through over-night fame. klavier was then already a lawyer, already had his band together, stood tall with his degree and his creativity and knew exactly where he wanted to go. but he was fucking seventeen. somewhere out there, klavier grew up really, really fast.
he evidently knows a lot about music, he is fully in charge of that concert, he writes his own songs, he potentially even mixes it himself instead of having staff to do that. he is an extremely good investigator and prosecutor, figuring out cases before anyone else does and then playing his cards so meticulously correct that he essentially puts work into his own loss. once he realizes that apollo's clients are innocent, klavier has to figure out moves to convince the entire court that he's wrong, all while keeping up appearances, and he manages.
klavier is extremely good at everything he does, because he has to be. because he was seventeen.
-
and after all that.... bro....... i think it's important to let him be happy.
i put him through a lot in exorcism. canon already puts him through a lot, and then i put him through more. i think he's complex and tragic, but he can't be only that. he plays air guitar in court! there's a still of his concert in canon where he passionately dips his microphone stand like they're dancing. he loves what he does!!! hes having fun!
he clearly has hobbies and interests and it's important to give them space between all the angst. doesn't he even say something about it being time to bury the teenage angst in the past? i think klavier actively wants to be good. he's had a turbulent life with fabulous ups and devastating downs, but he deliberately wants to come out okay.
and i think he puts in the work. because it's what he does.
so you're writing a young adult who has been a young adult for a little too long, who faces hardships with grim determination because he knows that he's strong enough to come out on top, and who makes morbid jokes and laughs about them while everybody else stares on in horror. hope this.... helps :')

I’m really excited to give my brother a copy of Turnabout Cinema, but I just realized that since he doesn’t know all of AA, I’m going to have to explain a lot of the cases to him, and some of this stuff is going to sound stupid as shit when I say it out loud.

I am once again making fanart for my own au, hallowed be thy unknown, in which Nick dies during his trial and Maya is left with only a ghost to help her after her sister dies.
The first was meant to be a scene in the trial where Maya finally gets Redd White but I never actually had the full "OBJECTION!" moment, yknow? It came out different but the art actually motivated me to write so win-win, yknow? I might actually color this one and use it as like...a banner for the fic or smthn idk lmao.
The second was a scene from chapter 3, after Maya, Phoenix, and Gumshoe leave Bluecorp. Gummy feels really goddamn bad he let Redd White backhand her TWICE so like...yeah. Considering the whole stuff with Badd and Faraday and Kay, the man has seen his share of kids getting the rough end of it, yknow? I liked being able to give Maya someone living to rely on. Plus I love Gummy and Maya as a duo coz like...they're the ones the game tends to dumb down for comedy. I want their existence to be meaningful, yknow?
Idk pls read my fic. I'm working on Case 2: Tokusatsu Haunting right now lmao. I'm not fond of PLAYING Turnabout Samurai but I think the story of it is fascinating. It shares the better end of the Third Case Syndrome stick (god the investigation portion sucks shit and drags and is confusing) with Turnabout Serenade. Alas...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[Image ID: Two pencil sketch fanart of Ace Attorney. The first is of Maya Fey calling "OBJECTION!" with the ghost of college-aged Phoenix Wright mirroring her pose behind her. The second is of a tired Maya looking away as Gumshoe (only his hand) applies a large bandage to one of her injured cheeks. He is saying "This isn't the first time I've seen things like this." /end ID.]

Ace Attorney 4-3 Turnabout Serenade, Trial 2
An impossible murder committed by an impossible killer overheard by an impossible witness. Today is the day we unpack this illusion and find the secret at the heart of this magician's trick.
This is going to be a two-parter. I want to take some time to talk about the case itself and its construction before getting into the characters in the second part.
Turnabout Serenade has more than a few bumps in the road. There's a lot that happens in this case and a lot to talk about. The consequence of almost nothing happening in Trial 1 is that everything under the sun happens in Trial 2.
The case against Machi is complicated (and partly rooted in inarguable bullshit, grumble grumble), and the case for Machi is even moreso. Meanwhile, the case against Daryan is that a friend of the defendant who can't have witnessed the crime said he did it. On the other hand, the case for Daryan is:
Tumblr media
As long as Daryan was onstage at the time of the murder, we're going nowhere with accusations against him. Daryan was onstage in the first set. Lamiroir was onstage in the second. Daryan was onstage again in the third. Even if we hadn't explicitly heard the gunshots during the third set, at no point were Daryan and Lamiroir ever backstage together. It cannot have happened.
As with 4-2 and 4-1, 4-3's illusion relies on a fundamental misunderstanding of the basic facts of the case. For 4-1, that misunderstanding was centered on who was even present at the crime scene, along with a shell game of bottle strikes. For 4-2, the misunderstanding centered on the seemingly three angles that the bullet could have come from, never considering a secret fourth option. For 4-4, it's a misunderstanding of time.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We have a positive ID on the killer. But unweaving this magician's trick will, ironically, require unweaving an unrelated yet pressingly important illusion cast by an actual magician. The trick does not directly relate to the crime, but it's adjacency to the crime requires us to unpack it in order to provide key evidence of what transpired.
(This idea, incidentally, is one of two pieces of the case that a Danganronpa mystery will later borrow for its own series. Danganronpa creator Kazutaka Kodaka seems to be a fan of Turnabout Serenade specifically.)
In this case, solving the magician's trick allows us to change the scene, making the impossible become possible. It lets us move the position of Lamiroir during the second set away from the stage. This is a vital change that makes it possible for her to have heard Daryan's voice.
Tumblr media
To that end, we turn to the magnificent poof who's been popping in and out of this case waiting for his turn in the next. Valant Gramarye carried out a grand illusion in the second set, during which Lamiroir became a witness to this crime.
But alas, we can't get anything from the horse's mouth because Valant saw this coming.
Tumblr media
Skipped town so fast you can practically see the dust cloud in his wake. It's hilarious that Valant is the one person involved with this crime to grab his shit and run at the first sign of trouble, but he's also completely innocent. He just doesn't want to be forced under oath to explain his trick. That's great.
So, with Valant bunkering down until it all blows over, we're left to piece the illusion together for ourselves.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's clever, the way Turnabout Serenade weaves these two illusions together. Valant was onstage acting as a body double for Lamiroir while she crept her way into position to complete the trick - singing all the while to maintain the performance. This put her in position to become a witness to the crime that our cautious killer never knew existed - And, better, yet, to capture the crime on mic.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Isolating Lamiroir's singing to find a gunshot captured in the song's recording is a lot of fun. It's one of the few times in the series where it feels like you're doing something more than simply listening to people talk and then matching statements to contrary evidence.
Which is a lot of fun, don't get me wrong; Nobody would stick around for Ace Attorney if they didn't enjoy the core gameplay loop of cross-examinations and evidence rebuttals. But I like when it gets a bit more complicated.
This is my favorite part of 4-3. Unpopular opinion, I know; Having to sit through the Guitar's Serenade over and over again is one of the more contentious parts of this case, I think? I don't know, I'm not super up-to-date on the discourse. But I love playing around with the mixing board - though the final mixing board challenge is pretty obtuse, admittedly.
Honestly, I like most of the minigames from this franchise. They're all fun to play in their own ways. Though the fingerprint dusting is mechanically tedious and should be trimmed down to just picking out whose prints might match. I think I recall they threw it out entirely though? Which is a shame.
But I digress.
Cracking Valant's illusion allows us to crack the illusion of the crime scene - with one other illusion that needs to be cracked in order to form the full picture of what happened. That brings us back to the other piece of Turnabout Serenade that Danganronpa borrowed from.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Well maybe the murder didn't happen in rhythm with a fucking song and we shouldn't be using that as the legal basis for our case.
You want to talk about evidence lacking credibility? The murderer handed us a script for how events played out and we took him at his word because we're a fucking clown show. XD
Speaking of magic tricks, this was pure con artistry. The only way to win at interpreting the song lyrics was to ignore them. Their purpose wasn't to help us solve the case, but to complicate it.
Tumblr media
In my Danganronpa revisit, I complained heavily about their take on this because it required the killer to hang out and take an awful lot of extra steps at a crime scene that was already compromised. Turnabout Serenade, however, weaves most of those steps into actions that Daryan already intended to and needed to undertake anyway. The plan was already a hop, skip, and a jump away from Gavin's song as it was.
Though the moving of the body at the end is still pretty bullshit. Especially since he had to not only transport a corpse down a well-used hallway onto the stage but then also hunt down, knock out, and position Machi up there as well - All without ever being seen doing any of it in this relatively small and locked down space full of cops.
In a case filled with stage illusions, that was shameless wizardry.
In any case, those are the three illusions layered over this crime. Now it's time to talk about what really happened on that fateful day. Courtesy of Investigation 2, we've already got a pretty strong idea of what this case is about when we go into it. In fact, the case opens with a reminder of the ominous hints it set up in Trial 1.
Tumblr media
This, right here, is the key to our motive. The Chief Justice's son has fallen victim to a deadly virus. Conspicuously at the same time that a cop smuggled a miracle cure into Japanifornia and shot an Interpol officer over it. These two things are clearly related.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Taken into context, the killer's motive here is clear to see. This is about the Borginian Cocoon.
Tumblr media
Romein was investigating Lamiroir and Machi under suspicion of trafficking one of these highly illegal cocoons. Which at least one of them obviously did, resulting in a confrontation with the buyer Daryan.
Tumblr media
Specifically, our very own defendant Machi. This is one of those fun Ace Attorney cases where the defendant, though innocent of the murder charge, is in fact guilty of something else. Also, he can speak Japanese English after all.
Tumblr media
So that's two out of two performers who don't speak Japanese English until it's suddenly revealed that they speak Japanese English. Everything about these people is a lie. I don't like this particular aspect of the case.
This case gives me a lot of feels for Lamiroir and Gavin, though. The only two people who were actually here to play music, and they were both played for suckers because of it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Not that they accomplished anything by doing it.
This, right here, is what makes this case work for me so well. We have a cleverly orchestrated smuggling plot to bypass customs and get the cocoon into Japan. We have a carefully concocted murder cover-up by an experienced professional. Everything is so clever, so meticulous. And it's all for nothing.
Tumblr media
The entire plan got fucked sideways by the unforeseen detail of the guitar being vacuum packed and everything snowballed from there.
These are my favorite types of case elements. The wild card pieces. In mystery writing, it's all too easy to try and make everything that happens "part of the plan". Everyone wants to write the most genius mastermind imaginable. But a bend or swerve in the story that happened because a genius villain made it that way will never be as compelling as one that happens because of the chaotic randomness of life.
This one simple oversight destroyed five lives. The officer Romein, who was shot in a struggle while trying to find the cocoon Daryan couldn't retrieve ahead of time. The conspirators Daryan and Machi, whose crime was brought to light by the attention the murder brought down on them. And the Chief Justice and his son who will never receive the cure Daryan meant to sell to them. All of these lives took a catastrophic dive because of a simple decision Gavin and Lamiroir made in how they wanted to pack the guitar.
So Daryan shot LeTouse. Then he destroyed the evidence.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This case starts out as an enigmatic killing by an artistic maniac painting his masterpiece in blood. But when you peel back the layers, you just find crime. Mundane, banal crime. Not the portrait of a murder artist, but a desperate clean-up by a pair of smugglers who thought they'd hit paydirt before the job went awry.

For the Ace Attorney ask: 3, 4 and 10
[Ace Attorney Asks]
3: Favorite case?
Farewell, My Turnabout. The themes always get me, and I think it's rather fitting design wise. The case is centered two actors and I think it works well to convey this idea that everyone has "a role to play". The sections where the background fade to black and the characters speak directly to the player remind me of plays that have monologue sections that have a similar effect as a way to engage the audience. I think it works incredibly well, since Phoenix was formally a Theaters Arts Major and the case served to solidify his exact role in the judicial system.
It's also really nice for the smaller moments, like Phoenix admitting to himself he relies on Pearl to cry for both of them when they think about the situation Maya's in, and of course the famous "Edgeworth snatched up the bear" moment. I always feel the need to replay it because I always miss this line:
Tumblr media
For what it's worth, this case made a big influence in how I read the optional dialogue and think of lines that aren't strictly part of the progression of the story as them ad-libbing, hence some of the really insane ribbing that you see in later games.
I like a lot of cases, but this one just feels really distinct because I do chalk this up as Phoenix's first real loss in court.
4: Least favorite case?
Probably Turnabout Reminiscence (4th case of the first Investigation games). It's mostly due to Edgeworth's developing working dynamic with Gumshoe can come across a little too mean-spirited for my liking. I know in context this is their early meetings so a rocky relationship isn't unusual, but it just kind of felt off in context to the rest of the game.
In terms of frustrating leaps of logic, probably Turnabout Big Top still irritates me, the case and how it works for story telling I can deal with, but suspending my disbelief to buy the idea that once the bust fell the cape Russell Berry was wearing magically float back up and got stuck to the bust as Acro hauls it up? Not as much.
I'm actually willing to forgive Turnabout Serenade since the game warns us (via Phoenix) you'll have to use a lot less conventional means to win this case.
Though, I think it actually wouldn't have taken much to make the case flow smoother by having Apollo point out on the first day of trial that the murder weapon would have had a pretty powerful kickback. So, whoever fired the gun would have had some intense pain since this was heavily emphasized on the first day of investigation. Hell, one of Machi's sprites has him clutching his arm, which could have brought suspicion back to him.
Then, I think there was (probably) some intent to shift the suspicion back to Daryan because of him missing a cue (implied due to him feeling the after effect of the 45 caliber gun on his shoulder), though this was never brought up. But I can see him waving it off as him having an off day and then it'd force Apollo to take Phoenix's advice and approach solving the case from a different angle by unraveling all the mysteries.
10: Best villain and why?
Damon Gant.
He only appears in one case, but there something that gets me as a "what-if" because his intents and sense of justice were in the right place, but he really showed how easily you can "stray off the path" and how it can rapidly spiral before you know it.
Once the truth has been revealed, I always think about his final lines as he laments to the Judge he'll have to cancel their lunch plans. It's just such a powerful moment, how the people running this system aren't some deities, but people.
Also, as a casual horror fan, I always adore how he has such a long and unnerving stare that makes you pause and wonder whether or not your game froze, lmao.
P.S. (boop)

im gonna do a rambly thing because this is a rambly thing thats been in my brain and its actually sort of coherent and im incapable of shutting up so i want to share it. it also happens to be ace attorney because. ace attorney is running my life rn. but see more for said rambly thing (which will make the above make more sense, probably)
as much as i love the idea of the scene where apollo and klavier first meet, apollo looking at klavier and being Very Queer and klavier being like "ive never been looked at this way by a man before" and also being Very Queer, i dont think thats exactly what it is.
as ive mentioned a tiny little bit in a previous post, kristoph and klavier are nearly identical, and its kind of eerie how similar they actually are. theyre both easy to anger (though kristoph is a little more subtle until his breakdown) and tend to show this by hitting solid objects (wall for klavier, witness stand for kristoph); they have the same hair (which klavier seems to hav copied from kristoph); they both have sprites/animations of moving their hair out of their eyes, though klaviers is more sweet and suave while kristophs is more annoyed and disgruntled; kristoph has a sprite/animation where he kind of flicks his wrist and shakes his head, and klavier snaps his fingers (in the same general area); they both wear purple; they both wear glasses (klaviers sunglasses) with the same shape. the point is that they mirror each other
but, they are also fundamentally DIFFERENT. klaviers style is obviously rock n roll while kristophs is more traditional gentlemanly, and klaviers purple is much darker in comparison to kristophs. when klavier laughs, his head is tilted downward, but when kristoph laughs (in the flashback of what happened after the trial) his head is tilted up. kristoph tends to hold himself while klavier is much more loose. while they both tend to talk down to people, kristoph is more belittling and purposeful while klavier doesnt exactly seem to realize the wwords that are coming out of his mouth and just think hes being cool, yknow, like his brother. but, point is, theres a clear difference between them
you may be saying, "ok man can you just get to your point this is really stupid and youre dragging it on and its really hard to read paragraphs when you type so poorly" and to that i say yeah! i know! just hold on!
when apollo first sees klavier, he is HORRIFIED. a man so similar to his old mentor, the man that was supposed to teach him everything there was to being a defense attorney, the man that he helped send to jail on account of MURDER, appearing out in the open, so free and smiling. apollo is in terror and klavier somehow equates this to "i must look SO fine that this guy is giving me the same look women give me 😏" (which, i dont know what that says about the women he sees but) and completely misinterprets apollo looking him up and down in shock (apollo also literally says "mr. gavin?")
the reason apollo just seems to shit on klaviers person so much is because of how goddamn similar he is to kristoph, and he cant shake the feeling. and i think he recognizes that klavier and kristoph are NOT the same person, that klavier is not the same as kristoph, but he cant change that everywhere he sees klavier, he just sees kristoph in his place. and apollo cant find it in himself to be able to put a little trust in klavier being he just gives him this Icky Feeling.
i dont think apollo WANTS to hate klavier for being klavier either!! in turnabout serenade (i think?), when apollo and trucy go to talk to klavier on the stage, klavier greets them and apollo gives him an awkward "hiya". hes trying to be nice and polite and bypass his flight or fight responses but it comes out strained and uncomfortable. its much easier to say you dont like someone because theyre arrogant and whatever as an excuse than to say that oh my god, they look/act like someone who has made lasting damage/impact on your life. some jealously aspects could come from apollo thinking that klavier has it so easy despite also being horrendously betrayed by someone close to you because klavier just seemed to bounce back just like that.
i dont exactly know where to put this point, but after the first case and kristoph gets sent to prison, klavier literally cannot be lead by kristoph anymore. his brother isnt watching his every move, and he cant use klavier anymore (whether klavier was aware or not). theres just klavier, his own person
but, ok, whatever whatever, whats with the pictures. this one i can summarize easily, actually. in thinking [all of the above], i also thought of what would break the mirage apollo has floating around klavier at all times, and i think that would be something along the lines of klavier doing something that apollo physically cannot imagine kristoph doing as well. in this case, its kneeling down in the mud trying to find his key ring and then getting mud in his hair and being so oblivious to it. kristoph just isnt the type. and i think something like that would give apollo a moment of thought and realization. and then some like rivals to lovers stuff happens idk this post is over

random thing i dont see most people bring up, between turnabout serenade and turnabout succession, phoenix didn't just abandon trucy. he actually left her with apollo. which is still kinda concerning and a smidgeon fucked up (like, really? abandoning the two kids with the worlds biggest abandonment issues????)
im getting this from these lines at the start of 4-4, btw
