Maid of Broxtowe
As well as the legendary Fair Maid of Clifton, Nottingham has a second ‘fair maid’. She is Agnes Willoughby, the ‘Maid of Broxtowe’. Unlike her Clifton counterpart, Agnes’s story is supposedly based on actual events. It is the writer Thomas Bailey, in his book ‘Annals of Nottinghamshire’, who gives Agnes the title, ‘Maid of Broxtowe’. In fact Bailey is wrong, she should realy be call the Maid of Aspley and perhaps, Nottingham’s own Juliet. Her story is set amidst the turbulent times of the English Civil War and is the tale of two houses, Broxtowe Hall and Aspley Hall.
The dwelling known as Broxtowe Hall, stood on the site of the ancient manor of Broculeston. Passing through various hands, it was never more than a large country house. It was demolished in 1937 with the building of the Broxtowe estate, to make way for the houses on Broxtowe Hall Close, (off Broxtowe Lane). Although the site at Aspley is not as ancient as Broxtowe, the house has a more interesting history. More correctly known as Aspley Woodhouse, the area was an ancient forest that stretched into Wollaton and Bilborough. The first house on the site was a ‘hunting lodge’ belonging to Lenton Priory, (a sort of country retreat for the prior and his important guests). This building was a ‘tower house’, a stone tower with a wooden hall and kitchen attached. After the Dissolution, in the reign of Elizabeth I, the lodge become the property of the Blyth family along with the valuable rights to timber and grazing. By 1600 the house had passed into the hands of a branch of the Willoughby family and was greatly remodelled. The tower remained a feature until the house was demolished in 1968. Aspley Hall was located a few hundred yards along Robin’s Wood Road from its junction with Aspley Lane. During the Civil, Broxtowe Hall was fortified and held for Parliament under the command of a dashing young puritan officer, Captain Thornhaugh. Aspley Hall on the other hand, had been fortified for the King by the devoutly Catholic, Willoughby family. It is said that the two opposing sides eyed each other with a mutual contempt that seldom came to blows. This however, is not quite true, as both properties were damage during the conflict. Agnes Willoughby was a very beautiful and pious young lady known for her acts of charity and other Christian works. One Sunday morning in 1645, Agnes set out from Aspley to take alms to a poor family who lived close by the church in Bilborough. Later that day, her mission complete, Agnes set-out to return home. At the same time, unbeknown to Agnes, Thornhaugh had set out, clutching his bible in hand, on his usual contemplative walks, and was heading in the direction of Bilborough. A little was out of the village, Agnes was set-upon by three armed rouges. Her screams came to the attention of Thornhaugh, who by this time was close by. He drew his pistol and ran in the direction of the cries. By the time he reached the spot of the affray, Agnes had already been drag from her horse and the men were about to violate her. Thornhaugh shouted a warning and shot dead one of the men. Not eager to tangle the gallant captain, the other two fled. Thornhaugh comforted the frightened girl and at great risk to himself escorted her home to her grateful father. From that moment there was an instant attraction between the two young people. Thornhaugh, under a flag of truce, returned regularly to Ashley Hall to enquire as to Agnes’s health. When duties prevented such visits, Thornhaugh would write a long letter expressing his concerns for her well-being. Clearly both were in love. It was a love that could not be. The two were not only on opposite sides in a bloody conflict, there political and religious views were diametrically opposed. Agnes prayed for her love’s soul and begged him to renounce his heretical beliefs. Thornhaugh for his part was a good and loyal soldier and puritan to the roots. Despite his aching heart he could not give these things up. Then, one cold November morning Thornaugh received orders from his commander, Coln. Hutchinson, the captain was to take his small force and join the siege of Shelford. This he dutifully did, but whilst engaged in the action he was shot through the chest and mortally wounded. When she heard of his death, Agnes was inconsolable. She took to eating simple foods, dressing plainly and resolved never to marry. Agnes lived for another 60 years and dedicated that time to good works, praying for the soul of her love and believing that God would see fit to unite them in the after-life

Bring Back the Rock Pile
I've made it back home from home.
My current home is in North Carolina. My home town state is New York.
When I grew up, I was blessed with grandparents, aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews. We visited one another often. I had a whole bunch of relatives on Wisconsin Street, just off of East Main, all of them were members of the Keenan family. My mother was the oldest of the four Keenan children. Wisconsin Street was one of my homes.
My grandmother and grandfather on my father's side lived in Holcomb, New York. My father's sister Martha, her husband Billy and their daughter Margaret also lived in the village. Holcomb was another of my homes.
Our family lived on Parsells Avenue inthe 18th ward on the East Side of Rochester. Parsells was my first home.
My father's father bought some land on Canandaigua Lake in the 1930's and over the course of the next 30 years he built two cottages on that property. I was around for the building of the second cottage. We spent a lot of time in Canandaigua at the cottage and in the Lake. Canandaigua was yet another home for me. My parents let me bring friends with me when we went for weekends. My city friends grew to love the lake as well.
All four of the locations were distinct from one another. Although both Parsells and Wisconsin were city streets on the East side, Wisconsin Street was closer to the Main. Holcomb was a village. Canandaigua a lake city. I had a different set of friends at each locale.
Now back to the home coming home.
My brother picked me up from the airport last week. He had bought and rebuilt a third house on Canandaigua Lake, next to the original two. I stayed at his house for the duration of my trip. Next door is my cousin Margaret who everyone has called Moonyeen since she was a child. Moon is 84 now. Her husband Corky lives with her. They married immediately after graduating from Holcomb High School. Holcomb High school no longer exists nor for that matter does Holcomb. Holcomb was absorbed by the larger town of East Bloomfield.
Corky and Moon have three children one of whom is my "goddaughter". Lori also lives in Canandaigua but in the city not lakeside. Lori visits her Mom and Dad regularly and tries to intercede when her Dad starts one of his rants about driving. Corky only has one leg. He's had last rites a few times. His balance is shot. He's carrying a touch of dementia. He takes some spectacular falls. He insists that he can drive and that he's gonna get in that goddamned car and show everybody that he damned well can drive.
I was one of those gimmick Godfathers. I was only 12 myself so I imagine it was cute at the time. I hardly know Lori as she has moved around quite a bit and raised a family of her own. She has had a successful iife which I tried to take credit for by claiming that my "godfathering style" was non-interfence and because I had left her alone, she had grownup correctly.
She got it.
She laughed
She thanked me for "not being there."
I assured her that it was no problem and I would continue to not be there for her.
She said "Thank God."
That night, the remaining Keenans showed up. Tommy a retired cop who needs a walker to get around because of his bad knees and Dotty, the youngest of the cousins who travels with her husband Jeff to Las Vegas very regularly now that they've become empty nesters. They were in Vegas just a few feet away from the targert crowd when the sniper opened fire.
Dotty is the Keenan family historian.
My sister Tears and her husband Larry also showed up. They live in Rochester, preserving the roots. They live on Shelford Road. Shelford Rd is what Wisconsin Street becomes when it crosses into Irondequoit. Shelford and Wisconsin are the same street connected by a curve in the street called Wyand Crecent. After our family moved from Parsells we relocated to Wyand Crescent.
My brother bought a house on Shelford Road for my parents to live in after they soled Wyand Crescent. My father died on Shelford Road. Aside from a few years on Parsells, my mother lived her whole life on Wisconsin/Wyand Crescent/Shelford Road.
Now many of us were together once again and perhaps for the last time for my "homecoming."
We touched a lot of bases together during this particular home run.
All things must pass.....
On the last day of my visit , I had one more goal on my bucket list, a dip into the waters of Crystal Beach. My brother had told me that he had a waterproof camera so I had a mission.
I wanted to take a picture of the "rock pile."
The rock pile has been in the same place for God knows how long. It's a bunch of large rocks gathered together in such a way that when you stand on them, your head is above water. If you step off the rock pile, the water is ten feet deep.
As soon as I was old enough, my Dad took me out to the rock pile. I was scared to be in such deep water but Dad was near and he told me that I was safe.
I've repeated the process with my children.
A rocky rite of passage.
As far as I am aware, no one has ever seen the rock pile other than while experiencing it under the water. I decided to try and take a picture of it. I reached its remembered location. I took a deep breath and dove down with Deke's waterproof camera .
There it was as it has always been.Looking the same as it always does. Silent and calm. Alone No time had passed since the last time although it had been at least 10 years in above the surface time. The rock pile was ready for its close up.The rock pile has always been ready.
I didn't know how to use the new fangled camera. I surface dived and got near the rock pile. I clicked the camera button a couple of times before surfacing. I don't have glasses on when I swim and the cataracts are getting worse so I had no idea if the image was in focus, if the button I was hitting was the snap button or for that matter if the entire thing was actually happening as I have/had dreamt about this moment many times in my life and the camera never works in my dreams and I get back to look at the picture and there is nothing.
I swam back to shore. I gave my brother the camera. He asked me "Did you get it."
Like Mastin Thrust answered after catapault launching a paper mache boulder at a fake T rex when he was asked the same question in The Last Dinosaur, I had only one half-blind response. "I don't know."
A few hours later I was on the plane and heading home from home.
This morning, as Jeff Bezos hurled himself into space at the cost of a few billion dollars, I received a photo message from my bro. It's the picture of the rock pile that I have included here. Seen for the first time out of the water.

Going for a walk. It’s something we Brits love to do. For some it’s their regular exercise, for others it’s the Sunday stroll with the family after a big meal, or a New Years Day amble to ward off that hangover. Some choose to walk to work and others travel the world finding the best walking spots.
There are so many reasons we step out of the door and put one foot in front of the other. We all know it is good for our physical health but it’s also great headspace.
A Walk, Not A Run
On Wednesday I had planned on going for a run. I arrived home to find a meal cooked for me and the run went out of the window. Having a dog now means there are no truly lazy days. Brew still needed a walk but I’m fed up of the limited options near our house, so we headed out into the countryside.
Radcliffe on Trent is only a few miles down the road from us. A rolling footpath leads from the River Trent, up onto a river cliff and down into pretty Shelford.
The Beauty Of It
This walk really pulled out the stops. Having climbed up out of Radcliffe we spot a path leading back down to the river and the tell tale roar of a weir. The power of water is mesmerising. Perhaps it’s the movement or maybe the white noise of the flow. It’s easy to stop, watch and stay stopped.
A small path, not shown on the OS map, leads off along the river bank. We follow the narrow clay trail, picking our way over roots and under low branches. A steep track leads us back up to the main footpath. We climb and then steadily descend towards the Trent and Shelford.
Shelford is a peaceful village. We wind in to it and then out on another path. There are few people about. I breathe deeply in the scent of freshly ploughed fields. Even the farmer waves to us from his tractor. I feel as if I have walked into a postcard.

The Sun Sets
As we rise, once more, towards Radcliffe, the sun starts to set. We may mourn the loss of summer but there is such beauty in the change of seasons. The grass is still lush and green but there is an edge of chill in the air. The sun may rise later and set earlier but it means we get to see the colourful skies more often.
Now she steadily falls, until nothing is left but her glow.
Brew bounds ahead, desperately chasing squirrels. They scoot easily out of his reach, throwing devilish taunts down from the trees. We hate to tell him that his life ambition of getting within an acorns width of one will never be realised.
I feel happy but tinged with sadness.
Only You Can Make A Change
I love the countryside. I want to be there. Not just to visit and then head back to the noise of town. It has been a novelty, living close to the city centre of late. But, it is noisy and crowded. Sitting in our front room means listening to the revving of boy racer cars and their thudding music. People row, loudly in the street. We cannot have our window open at night, for the yells and engines keep me awake.
Out here, in the countryside, I feel relaxed. The dog does too. Away from roads, he can run freely. Investigating and exploring every grass blade and fallen leaf.
Something needs to change in my life. I whisper a promise to Brew that we will be out of town soon. Only I can make that happen.
The next day…
Brew and I went back the next day and ran the route.
