@giftober 2023 | Day 22: yellow
[Brom] was always ready for either a fight or a frolic; but had more mischief than ill-will in his composition; and with all his overbearing roughness, there was a strong dash of waggish good humor at bottom. —The Legend of Sleepy Hollow

The basic conceit is that Irving survives Hickey’s attempt on his life, and during Tuunbaq attaq at the failed trial, he and Tozer end up witnessing Collins’ death together. I was thinking of doing this for the Big Bang coming up, but I’ve decided I can’t make myself write this much on a deadline lol, this is just for fun
This gives Irving a chance to actually react to his entire worldview being shaken by experiencing this moment of true human kindness followed by an attempted murder — and crucially, now the most religious character gets to see a man’s soul sucked out of his body, yipee!
I’m very intrigued by Irving/Tozer because Tozer strikes me as a character with a whole lot of guilt, and Irving, as someone who is having to rebuild his understanding of the world through the lens of his faith, is in the perfect position to give Tozer the forgiveness he needs. I’m also fascinated by how easily Tozer is led when he is really and truly scared, and I think putting Irving there instead of Hickey—especially if Irving is the only other person who saw what he saw—makes some really interesting emotional ties. On the other side of the coin, Tozer is in a position to have a really profound effect on Irving while he grapples with everything that he’s seen and experienced.
Also post the events of the fic they adopt a puppy named Penguin, because it’s MY fic and IM driving (see below the cut😭💖)

Dunno if this this ask makes much sense, but how do you suppose Irving’s favoritism looks day to day? Barring extreme circumstances like Anders’ escapes from Kinloch Hold…I imagine it’s probably just additional responsibility and tutorship, but I also doubt Anders would have agreed with that so maybe it depends on the individual? Maybe with some mages he thinks are promising he’ll intervene, but otherwise leave them alone? Idk
ok SO
while i have compared the two to make funney posts, there is actually a distinction between irving's Anders Style Favouritism Behaviour and his Mage Warden Style Favouritism Behaviour. irving's favouritism to anders is notable in comparison to his lack of preference for someone like jowan, clearly seeing one as dangerous and to be sacrificed for the greater good, and the other as harmless and charming and generally of value/salvageable. (irving's all or nothing perspective towards blood magic comes into play here.) irving was "endeared" to him, and it was irving who "in particular looked upon anders with sympathy", counselled the templars to make allowances for him, and warned him against going too far after karl was sent away, because at some point he would no longer be able to protect him. the style of day-to-day interaction during anders' circle days is probably shown in this from irving's codex: "he can soothe templars angered by some childish magical prank at the same time that he lauds the pranksters, and everyone walks away satisfied." irving probably let him get away with a lot when it was harmless, and his fondness shows in his continued efforts to protect a troublemaker who had been trying to flee the circle since he arrived. it's clear that he cared about the kid! and continued to care about him no matter anders' less than grateful response, even after everything: "when asked if he regretted not punishing anders more severely, perhaps with tranquillity, irving only sighed and would not discuss the matter further."
but i emphasise that irving cared because all of this is more of a personal attachment, simply an interest taken in, and a fondness for, a young mage of the circle who happened to by nature stood out. it's not suggested that anders necessarily had the specific, formal relationship or day-to-day interaction that irving and the mage warden have: mentor and apprentice. in kinloch hold, each apprentice has a specific mentor; keili mentions her mentor, you meet wynne's apprentice during her personal quest, various ambient dialogue mages discuss their mentor or their apprentice, etc. etc. and because they are the specialest little guy, amell/surana's mentor is the first enchanter himself! irving has talked about your progress personally to loghain himself prior to ostagar, wynne can potentially say at ostagar "you advanced so quickly in your training that irving never sent you to work under me" (i imagine this is suggesting wynne helps tutor most young mages), people like uldred refer to you as "irving's star pupil", duncan says "i am sure irving is very proud to have had you as a pupil", irving of course personally recommends you to the wardens and ensures your recruitment, etc. etc.
while i imagine the mage warden had many other teachers, as irving is responsible for the entire tower and also not the most powerful mage in it for a star student to learn from, irving would presumably be primarily responsible for the mage warden's education. it would be irving they went to for tutorship or if they had any difficulties. keili says that her mentor allows only a certain amount of time a day for religious contemplation, so they clearly have authority over their apprentices' daily life and curriculum. irving after all says to the mage warden after the harrowing "take your time to rest, or study in the library. the day is yours", and i would imagine he usually has more specific plans for them to... do more studying in the library. (it's kinloch, what else are you going to do?) i very much doubt irving's teaching was just magic, too! irving is a competent mage, but his greatest skills and primary interests are administration and diplomacy. there's a reason people keep recognising you as irving's favoured student; he's setting you up to be a political player, and he's the one who successfully organises you becoming a grey warden. i imagine any mage warden would have a grounding in the associated skills
it is of course up to the player's choice whether irving's favouritism for the mage warden would have also had to involve smoothing things over with the templars like he did for anders. it may also be up for hc whether anders was indeed his apprentice too; to my knowledge there's no information on a specific mentor for anders, though considering the detail with which world of thedas covers their relationship it seems odd that being his primary teacher wouldn't come into it. it's not necessarily required for anders' mentor to have been a fellow spirit healer/creation specialist, as it's not like the mage warden was specialised when they finished their apprenticeship or like they have to follow any of irving's magical preferences, so that's no reason he couldn't be. (i checked and irving actually does have more spells in creation than any other school. i'm not going to analyse that spell list too hard right now because we could genuinely be here forever.) i would assume that circle mages only tend to specialise after their apprenticeship is completed anyhow, kind of like how you'd only do a degree after you finish high school. also because, you know. why invest in specialist training before you know if the kid's going to make it through the harrowing, am i right
as an aside it kind of alters irving's vibe a lot what kind of mage warden you play. but i think it's very interesting that he clearly cared about anders and that he is so invested in the mage warden and publicly proud of their talent regardless of whether they're loyal or defiant, studious or disobedient, amell or surana

Would love a rare or perhaps even never seen Terror hc of your own 👁👁
You may have a small selection of Headcanons! Leftenant Hodgson prefers the Dog Watches and other night shifts. He is a night person and not a morning person and does better in the evenings. Leftenant Little quite often sleeps poorly because he is haunted by inappropriate dreams of his fellow shipmates. Some nights his mind are especially cruel and his own dreams torture him with fantasies of Thomas Jopson and his haunting eyes and deft hands. John Irving detests black tea though politely drinks it out of etiquette and expectations. He prefers peppermint or lavender or other herbal blends. Caffeine does nothing for him for he is one of the individuals that it does not impact. (Some people are naturally like that).
Thomas Blanky and Francis Crozier have had a number of flings with one another across their entire naval career. Thomas Blanky's wife is well aware and not displeased in the slightest.
Francis Crozier and James Clark Ross have had a few flings as well as is definitely his "ex". Additionally he wasn't exactly interested in trying to find someone to marry until way later when he saw his old mates all getting married and he felt singled out and tried to conform. Not to say he does not find women attractive. He simply was always around other men for prolonged periods of time. Sophia Cracroft is a lesbian. (I have logic to support this.)
James Fitzjames knows a bit of Arabic from his time in Türkiye and adjacent countries.
Dundy is John Irving's best friend (slightly historically accurate). And they actually do a ton of sketches and art together. (Those hetero watercolours....)

So i've been relistening to gallifrey and i've been thinking about how yeah its a story about gallifreyan politics, but its also a story of a bunch of outcasts making their own family together (although through admittedly not great circumstances)
Like you've got romana, and yeah she might be the president, but she was also the kid who didn't have friends in school, and though she's pretty popular among the general population, she's disliked by a lot of the other politicians on gallifrey
And then there's leela who was cast out from her tribe before leaving her planet and everyone/everything she'd ever known behind to go travel the universe. Then she ends up on a planet that is hostile to outsiders and decides to stay there
And of course there's narvin who has been described as the black sheep of his chapter. he left behind the life that was expected of him to join the cia
And with brax he's probably the closest a person can get to being a renegade while still being allowed to participate in normal time lord society
and these four somehow manage to find each other (even if they don't particularly like each other at first) and come together to form their own little group where they all do actually belong

to stop it or to touch it... (redone as all text instead 🙏)
this makes their "first & last" scenes together direct inverses to each other bc ON-SCREEN their 1st scene together is jirv walking in on hickey&gibson, & chronologically obviously the murder is their "last" moment (making the flashback we get afterward both their 1st "moment" together AND also chronologically their last scene).
but w/ this in mind it's also an inverse bc we're seeing irving finally face his fears: hickey, literally; & temptation / gay desire, subtextually. the script identifies the moment jirv confronts hickey abt "abusing" gibson as "probably the bravest thing he's ever done" (!) which we will translate here as: morally he wants to do the right thing, bc 1) well he's not a BAD person, but also 2) he sees it as his moral xtian spiritual duty now to follow it through since gibson's come to him abt it directly, VS he does not LITERALLY want to address "what happened" or have to actually confront the situation head-on at all bc hickey scawes him 🥺 & not just as self-recognition thru the other (derogatory) anymore, where hickey stands for someone who can / will unapologetically act on his desires, & basically go thru life happily and godlessly comfortable w/ who he is (we love irony <3) etc etc that whole xtian thing abt pride being one of the worst sins; but now also jirv better understands the SEVERITY!! of hickey's wickedness too, in that not ONLY does he seem kinda lazy & (vaguely) manipulative / cunning & etc etc but now jirv's ALSO just been given reason to believe hickey's abusive & predatory sexually as well as morally, gibson was DEVIOUSLY SEDUCED (honest mistake! it could happen to anyone!!) and has now allegedly been threatened / blackmailed into it ever since
( aka i don't think it's rly a stretch to say jirv is projecting his own fears onto gibson: the obvious worst case scenario of what COULD happen (even to him!!!!!) were he ever to act on Those Temptations™ + in addition to gibson's testimony of abuse extortion etc basically just a situation where he is innocent PLUS also he seems repentant 🥺🥺 so yes ofc jirv will empathize w/ that narrative... yes sodomy is always wrong BUT since it's MORE hickey's fault for seducing & taking advantage of him can gibson truly be blamed or held accountable here for any of it... plus he's sorry... so it's still not ok, but. it's ok. like it's not but yes it is... )
BUT I DIGRESS back to the bravest thing jirv's ever done: so defined here as telling hickey to cut that out and go get a real hobby (whew, done!) but NOT actually intervening (even tho he interrupted) at the time of discovery; vs "RUNNING UP BOTH TO STOP IT AND TO TOUCH IT" which ...... ok HEAR ME OUT (& if it pleases the court your honor) SHOULD also be translated as both him facing his fear of hickey et al (perhaps emboldened by the ALMOST hero moment situation of it all) AND metaphorically, he's facing his fear of... ahem, just finally taking the risk and going for it (nonsexual) (but also absolutely sexual)
which does actually sort of bring things full circle for them on both levels (textual vs unspoken / subtextual) bc if we take the "site of what is potentially fucking" of it all to its logical conclusion, "stopping it" is gonna be his default, regular brain level reaction, it's the This Seems Kinda Bad I'm Gonna Be So Brave And Actually Get Involved This Time, so then "touching it" becomes...... well it's sort of a tactic acknowledgement, right? of this whole unspoken half of the dynamic, aka if we DO interpret the murder-by-stabbing as a metaphor for penetration / fucking (which i mean... ‘tis) then we must consider and accept the implications of what ELSE irving is finally acknowledging to himself more than even hickey here, however still unspoken and probably mostly unintentional; it's not actually a yes, because well. a murder metaphor doesn't rly track for "yes," but at this moment (probably) more like "maybe" or at least "not a no." with hickey's answer seeming to be... on one hand: i do see you, and i'm even going to do you a final kindness by giving you what you want :) (on the text level meaning kind of a quick, "heroic" death at least) but he’s giving threat and malice too w/ the covered mouth, the distorted, corrupted singing, the degradation (via post-mortem mutilation) with literal emasculation... etc etc i mean this part is pretty straightforward.
& i think there's for sure a deliberate lack of closure here, because hickey wants irving to die confused, he's choosing chaos by murdering him w/out answering any of the questions irving (or anyone) might have abt the endgame here, about WHY, hello??? & in doing so refusing to clearly answer the unspoken "what are we" (altho ofc his actions are answer enough!)
anyway, in conclusion... we’ve known 💖 and why did he act it this way 💖💖
