Saving Private Ryan (1998); AFI #71

The next film on the list is one of the best films of any genre, Saving Private Ryan (1998). This is what I consider the best war film of all time despite how overwhelming it is to watch. Maybe it is because it is so difficult to watch, since the movie was nominated for 11 Academy Awards and received five trophies. Because of the ensemble cast and almost complete lack of women, the film was never going to garner much in the way of acting awards. Like the soldiers who they hoped to portray, these actors shouldn’t have expected much individual recognition. This movie affected me greatly, and I would like to delve into that after going through the story line.

MAJOR SPOILER WARNING!!! BECAUSE OF THE NATURE OF THE FILM, EVERYTHING THAT COULD POSSIBLY BE REVEALED AS FAR AS PLOT IS GIVEN AWAY BELOW!!!

In the present day, an elderly man visits the Normandy Cemetery with his family. At a tombstone, he falls to his knees in anguish. The establishing shots showing the mass of grave stones is overwhelming from the get-go. The movie transitions from the graveyard to a landing boat at the battle of Normandy. Be prepared because it is about to get rough.

On the morning of June 6, 1944, American soldiers land at Omaha Beach as part of the Normandy invasion. Everything goes bad immediately as machine guns and mortars literally tear the landing soldiers to shreds. Soldiers are screaming for their mothers as they die on the beach. There is no going back into the ocean so the soldiers have run into the machine gun fire. Captain John H. Miller (Tom Hanks) of the 2nd Ranger Battalion leads a breakout from the beach that makes it through to the German encampment. It is about 15 minutes of carnage and nobody will blame you if you want to forward through this until the action cools down. Elsewhere on the beach, a dead soldier lies face-down in the bloody surf; his pack is stenciled Ryan, S. It is at this point I would recommend taking a breather if you need one.

Continuing on, we are shifted to Washington, D.C., at the War Department (keep an eye out for Bryan Cranston with one arm), where General George C. Marshall learns that three of the four sons of the Ryan family were killed in action within a short time of one another. Daniel Ryan in New Guinea shortly before D-Day, Sean Ryan at Omaha Beach, and Peter Ryan at Utah Beach: all dead with letters arriving the same day for their mother. The fourth son, James Francis Ryan, is with the 101st Airborne Division somewhere in Normandy. After reading Abraham Lincoln's Bixby letter, which is meant to comfort grieving parents, aloud, Marshall orders Ryan found and brought home.

Three days after D-Day, Miller receives orders to find Ryan and bring him back. He chooses seven men from his company for the job—T/Sgt. Mike Horvath (Tom Sizemore), Privates First Class Richard Reiben (Edward Burns) and Adrian Caparzo (Vin Diesel), Privates Stanley Mellish (Adam Goldberg) and Daniel Jackson (Barry Pepper), T/4 medic Irwin Wade (Giovanni Ribisi) and T/5 Timothy Upham (Jeremy Davies), an interpreter from the 29th Infantry Division. The group moves out to Neuville where they meet a squad of the 101st engaged against the enemy and both Ted Danson and Paul Giamatti show up. THe group searching for Ryan bump into a stranded French family who try to give over their children but a German sniper breaks up the party. Caparzo is killed by a German sniper, who is then killed by Jackson (who makes the most amazing shot that legends are made of). They locate a Private James Ryan (Nathan Fillion), only to learn that he is James Frederick Ryan. On the point of giving up, the Captain starts asking random passing soldiers and learns that Ryan is defending an important bridge in Ramelle.

Near Ramelle, Miller decides to neutralize a German machine gun position at a derelict radar station, despite his men's misgivings. It does not go well and the medic, Wade, is killed in the process. They take a German soldier that they name Steamboat Willie (Joerg Stadler) who gives up willingly and pleads for his life. The men are angry and want to kill the soldier since they can’t take any extras, so, at Upham's urging, Miller frees the surviving German soldier. Losing confidence in Miller's leadership, Reiben declares his intention to desert, prompting a confrontation with Horvath, who threatens to shoot him. Miller defuses the standoff by disclosing his civilian career as a high school English teacher in a small Pennsylvania town.

At Ramelle, they find Ryan (Matt Damon) among a small group of paratroopers preparing to defend the key bridge against an imminent German attack. Miller tells Ryan that his brothers are dead, and that he was ordered to bring him home. Ryan is distressed about his brothers, but is unwilling to leave his post. Miller combines his unit with the paratroopers in defense of the bridge. He devises a plan to ambush the enemy with two .30-caliber machine guns, Molotov cocktails, anti-tank mines, and improvised satchel charges made from socks. It is basically suicide so the bridge is wired to explode in case it can’t be held.

Now is a time to take a breather if you need one because it is about to get bad again. Elements of the 2nd SS Panzer Division arrive with two Tiger tanks and two Marder tank destroyers, all protected by infantry. The small American group holds off the force the best they can, Although they inflict heavy damage on the Germans, nearly all of the paratroopers, along with Jackson, Mellish and Horvath, are killed. It turns out that Steamboat Willie joined the group and he personally kills Mellish with a Nazi youth knife (it is horrible) and shoots Miller Captain Miller as he attempts to blow up the bridge. Miller crawls to retrieve the bridge detonator, and fires ineffectually but defiantly with his pistol at an oncoming tank. As the tank reaches the bridge, an American P-51 Mustang flies overhead and destroys the tank, after which American armored units arrive to rout the remaining Germans. With the Germans in full retreat, Upham emerges from hiding and shoots Steamboat Willie dead, having witnessed him shooting Miller, but allows his fellow soldiers to flee.

Miller tells Ryan to “earn this” before dying from his injuries. As the scene transitions to the present, Ryan is revealed to be the veteran from the beginning of the film, and is standing in front of Miller's grave expressing his gratitude for the sacrifices Miller and his unit made in the past. Ryan asks his wife if he was worthy of such sacrifice, to which she replies that he is. The final scene shows Ryan saluting Miller's grave and fades to the American flag gently waving in the breeze.

I really have a hard time getting through this film without pausing and taking a breather. I saw the film in the theater when I was 18, so my friends and I were all around the age that these soldiers would have been that rushed that beach and retook France. It was truly terrifying. Now I am old and have back issues, so I wouldn’t be put on a front line, but the kids that I work with and care for would be the exact age to be caught in a draft and that scares me even more. The creative ways in which man finds to kill one another is the greatest threat to humanity.

The first two times I saw the film, I did not realize that it was the same German soldier that the group had captured who eventually killed many of the group we were following. It really changes the message in the end. I had thought that Captain Miller had showed his humanity showing mercy, but it turns out that this mercy is misplaced. Now it seems like Spielberg is saying that neither humanity, nor religion, nor innocence, nor skill, nor even intelligence can save a man in the heat of battle. The only way to live is to watch the back of your group and protect each other like family.

There was a little bit of a travesty that occurred at the Academy in early 1999, because this film lost out in the Best Picture category to Shakespeare in Love. This is the same year that also saw Saving Private Ryan, The Truman Show, Life is Beautiful, Elizabeth, and The Thin Red Line. There had to be something behind that because I wouldn’t consider the winner even in the top 5. Shakespeare in Love is considered one of the worst Best Picture winners along with Crash and The Artist. Oscars are not everything and this movie is one of the best examples of this.

When I say that some of the scenes from this movie are difficult, I really do mean it. There was a hotline set up for people who have PTSD that was triggered by the film. One of the actual members of the 101st Airborne, Major Richard Winters, was consulted about the occurrences surrounding the attack. He said that it brought up many memories that he had worked hard to suppress because he had been taught that war veterans couldn’t express the psychological pain of battle. He also said that it was an important film that revealed what war was really like.

On Veteran’s Day in 2001 and 2004, ABC aired the film uncut with limited commercial interruptions. Living in California, I was able to watch the film on both of those occasions and remember getting my girlfriend at the time to watch in 2004. The film has become like a memorial to Americans lost in the European Campaign during WW2, so I treat viewing as a badge of honor and understanding, no matter how difficult it is to watch.

This film is a pretty easy answer when it comes to the standard questions for the most part. Does this film belong on the AFI top 100? Of course. It is the new benchmark for which all American war films will be judged. It is historically accurate, it is beautifully shot and directed, and it leaves a lasting impression far longer than just about any movie I have seen. Would I recommend it? This one has an age warning. It is not appropriate for young children because the first and last battle scenes are nightmare fuel. Even worse, they are apparently very realistic. It is hard to recommend something that is so scarring, but it will keep people for glorifying battle. It is horrific and should be avoided as much as possible. And that is a lesson that I believe this movie teaches better than any other. So please give this movie a watch and feel free to take a break if you need it.

Dear Dean (Chapter 10)

Summary: After taking Saint Lo, by sheer dumb luck, Lieutenant Dean Winchester from the 29th Infantry Division, Baker Company, received a truckload of replacements for his platoon that was falling apart. Little did he know, that one recruit would change his life forever.

Chapter Warnings: Ah, it’s a whole lotta angst. Fear of loss. Fear of the future.

August 20th, 1944

The morning came and right after reveille, his platoon stood at attention as Castiel barked out his orders. They were moving out pretty soon after, in an endless convoy of trucks. Dean guessed that they were about a day away from Brest, but as slow as the convoy moved, it could take them longer, maybe even two. If they would march, they’d probably reach it faster.

Dean couldn’t say that he’d anticipated that move. There was just so much to do and they were still more than a day away.

Bambi’d been doing better, although she hadn’t been sleeping enough. Dean commanded her to take a nap on the truck, which she agreed to do, but not without an eye roll. Those damned eyes. He hoped that her back would heal properly before they reached Brest.

Some soldiers marched along the convoy, and some were sprawled out on the flatbed of a deuce-and-a-half. They took turns rotating their marching duties to save energy for Brest.

Dean was busy walking from one truck to the other, taking and giving orders. By the time he could take a little break, Bambi was asleep and snoring in the truck bed. She was curled up against a corner. Dean took a seat a couple of feet from her, smiling as he watched her. He didn’t know if he was lucky or a stupid son of a bitch for falling in love in the midst of war. Hell, he didn’t even know what love felt like so he didn’t have an answer to that.

The convoy stopped at a small village in the outskirts of Morlaix for the night, and Castiel directed them to their harbor area. Dean walked and talked with the men of his platoon, checking if they had everything, telling them to restock on their ratios and ammos.

“Sir, are we finally marching into Brest tomorrow?” Private Fitzgerald asked with an easy smile on his face. It made Dean wonder how someone could be so happy about the fact that they were going to be shot at.

“Yes.” It was a short answer, but Dean had nothing else to add onto that.

His platoon dug a couple of foxholes to share and Dean took a walk through the village. It probably used to be a really nice village, too, before the war destroyed it. What was left were buildings that used to be a hotel and a couple of stores. The Battalion staff were occupying the rooms, though, leaving them empty handed, and Dean couldn’t really remember the last time he had a roof over his head. A real one, not some makeshift foxhole roof. Of course he had a roof in Vire, but already it seemed like ages ago.

He walked back after talking with the platoon leaders from Fox and Easy company who had set up their harbor area on the other side of the village. When he got closer to his platoon, Dean could already hear the heated exchange.

“Hey!” Dean barked, breaking into a jog. “Hey! What’s going on?” He reached their campfire where he saw Bambi standing there red faced with a frown across her forehead and already Dean thought of the worst. Was her secret out? Had she been exposed? Was it his fault?

“Bambi here, sir,” Harvelle started to speak, lifting his chin to point it towards Bambi. “We received sentry rota for tonight and we took Bambi off, because he’s obviously still weak and we’d rather he stays put, because we need him to be ready tomorrow. He was having none of it.”

“Goddamnit, I’m fine! I can do it if y’all would just let me! It’s just sentry for god’s sake. It’s not like I’m going to fight Krauts alone while y’all are sleeping. Geez!” Bambi hissed and threw her arms up in the air dramatically. Dean had a hard time holding in his laugh.

He understood that she was sick of being treated like she was delicate, but it also showed that his platoon took care of their own and Dean couldn’t lie, he was proud of that. They were family, and he couldn’t wish for a better support system away from home. He also made sure that his men behaved. After Omaha and before Saint Lo, there had been quite of a common thing that the soldiers were passing along women they freed from the Nazis and even though the girls were very grateful and acted that way, Dean could see in their eyes that they were not really enjoyed being passed along. He made sure that his soldiers knew that if he caught wind of anyone mistreating a woman that he would personally kick their asses back to Virginia. “Think about how you would treat your sisters, mothers, grandmothers.” He said to them, and then Harvelle made a face.

“Thanks for that, Lieutenant. I’ll never look at a woman the same again.”

Dean shrugged at that. If it got his men to respect them, then he did the right thing. There were a couple of trouble makers in Balthazar’s platoon who were out of line and, as luck had it, they ended up with an itching rash on their dicks for days. They wouldn’t stop complaining and whining until they reached Saint Lo and could be treated by experienced medical staff. Dean chuckled when he heard about it. Karma was a bitch and they deserved it.

“We’re just looking out for you.” Tran said, crossing his arms as if he was a little hurt that Bambi didn’t appreciate what they’re all doing for her.

She didn’t say anything, instead she looked down to her boots, but Dean could see that she was trembling. She’s probably even close to crying.

Dean cleared his throat to speak. “So, you really wanna do it, private?” He asked her, and she looked up at him. Her eyes were a little red, but she stood there, unfazed and he knew that she was not going to back down.

“Yes, sir.” The voice came out a little broken at first, but she caught herself quickly.

“Fine. Then leave him in.” Dean didn’t want to argue with her. He knew that she was not going to back down. Not the Bambi he knew. No, the Bambi he knew was not scared of challenges. She was not intimidated and wouldn’t let a sore back ruin the chance of making herself purposeful and help out in any way she could. “Put me in with him. Any other questions?” Dean asked, looking around at his men.

Dean could see a Harvelle’s eyes. They were not pleased, but Dean ignored it. “No, sir.” Harvelle answered with a frown, already putting in Bambi’s name for sentry.

“Good. As you were,” Dean nodded at all of them before he went on with his duties.

Castiel sent a runner up to find him. Dean ran into him when he was rounding the corner to the Battalion staff building. “Sir, Lieutenant Novak wants to speak to you, sir!”

“Where is he?”

“Company CP, sir. At the old bakery.”

“Thank you, private.” Dean said, and made his way toward the bakery.

To say that the streets were confusing was an understatement. Dean remembered that he walked past a bakery before, but now he finds himself lost. He took another turn which led him to a cul de sac, and he couldn’t believe that he got lost twice. Eventually he arrived at the office and was probably already late.

Cas chuckled when he saw him outside of the bakery’s still intact display window. “You got lost, didn’t you?” He immediately said when Dean stepped in.

“How do you know?” He answered a little snappishly. Dean was tired and still had so many things to organized that he couldn’t delegate. He didn’t have time to get lost or patience left for Cas. It better be something very fucking important.

“I get lost every time.” Cas shrugs. “That’s why I’m staying and not going anywhere until we’re leaving. Imagine the CO who can’t even find his own damn office.” Cas walked over from his sand table to sit back on the corner of his desk. He took a deep breath before he fumbled with his cigarette tin and held it out to Dean. “You want one?”

“No, thanks.” The reply came too quick and it made Cas raise an eyebrow at him.

Dean didn’t smoke that much anymore. Actually, he stopped completely when Bambi got hurt. The last cigarette he had was when they were sitting around the campfire while he was heating up food for her and then, it was only because he didn’t want to be rude when one of his men offered him one from their already declining cigarettes in their tin packs. He gave up smoking for her, still remembering that she told him in her foxhole that she didn’t smoke and he didn’t as well, out of courtesy. He was going to stop smoking once he was back on American soil anyway - if he ever got back, that is. It just happened sooner than he thought it would be. Giving up smoking for her was not that big of a deal, and Dean would give up way more, come to think of it.

Cas shrugged as Dean denied the cigarette and lit one up for himself. He inhaled deeply, breathing out blue smoke that rose up and disappeared in the air.

“Why I called you in,” Cas cleared his throat and Dean watched him. “Jamie Blum.”

“What’s with him?” Dean shifted from one foot to the other.

“His brothers all put in his name to be contacted in case of emergency. And he’s the only one in their will. Since he’s been here, it took the news longer to arrive.”

“Cas,” Dean’s getting impatient. “Cut it. What’s wrong?”

“His brother. Jameson Blum, he’s with the 5th Infantry. He’s been MIA since they attacked and Captured Angers more than a week ago.”

Dean didn’t say anything. His heart was racing and already he thought of how he’d be able to tell Bambi.

“That’s not all.” Cas continued and Dean’s heart sank deeper. “His brother Jack, who was with the 1st Infantry, didn’t make it past D-Day.”

“Fuck.” Dean muttered under his breath. Suddenly he wanted to smoke again. Or throw up. He was undecided.

“Yeah, I don’t know if I should tell Blum that, or if you wanted to do it, since I know that you’re so close.”

Dean frowned then, looking back up at Cas. “What do you mean?”

“Dean, I have always admired you. How you work with your men.. You’re family, and I was always jealous of the relationship you had with them. I wanted to be like you, leading a platoon and have men literally line up to die for me.” Cas chuckled lightly. “You just don’t see it, do you? If you’d say jump, they wouldn’t even ask how high, they’d do the highest they can. If you go into battle face first, they are the ones who have your back no matter what. They’d all follow you, even it if meant that they’re following you to their death. They’d even thank you for it, Dean.”

“Ah, come on.”

“It’s true. I still think you’d have been a better CO.”

“Bullshit, Cas. You’re our fearless leader. Me, for one, I’d follow you no matter what. And honestly, I trust you with my life and the lives of my men.”

Cas walked around the desk and put a hand on Dean’s shoulder. “Thanks.”

“Only telling the truth, is all.” Dean shrugged, smirking a little to cheer his friend up, and Cas smiled back.

“So, you want to tell Blum or shall I?”

There was no way that Dean was going to let her hear the devastating news from Cas. Even though he didn’t really want to tell her himself. “No, I’ll tell him.” Dean was already thinking of the how.

It was close to his sentry duty at oh-one-hundred-hours, and Dean would see Bambi again. He squeezed in a nap, but he was so anxious about telling her, that it took him longer to fall asleep. When he finally fell asleep, he had to get up again. To say that he was exhausted was an understatement. Plus he snuck in to nap in Sneezy’s foxhole, because Dopey was on sentry and god, that man snored. There were times that Dean thought the foxhole would collapse on them. So sleeping in the same hole with Sneezy, that was a thing Dean ain’t going to do again. When Dean rounded up the corner he could already spot her sitting on a big stone at the most Eastern spot of their sentry point.

She sat there, looking out at the dark sky when Dean approached.

“You’re late.” She said, but she didn’t look back or up at him.

Dean sat down beside her. “Sorry,” He said. “Sneezy wouldn’t let me nap.”

“Maybe you should dig up your own hole for a change, Lieutenant.” She tilted her head to look at him then and she smiled. Dean cursed himself. She looked happy, relaxed, and he was about to ruin all of that when he told Bambi about her brothers.

Dean chuckled awkwardly, “Yeah, maybe I’ll try that.”

They sat beside each other for a while in silence, before he took her hand, threading his fingers through hers. His thumb painted soothing circles on her knuckles. “Jamie, I need to tell you something.”

She looked over to him and went still. It was a clear night, the moon shone above them and painted her in a beautiful glow. “You wanna break up with me for real, Lieutenant?”

“Bambi,” He said, already annoyed and ready to deny it.

“‘Cause if you do it’s alright. I get it, you know. No hard feelings because war and all. And I’m a man and you’re not queer and –”

“Jamie! Listen to me!” He hissed, making her flinch and stop rambling. He didn’t want to hear that from her, let alone then.

She was gasping, not used to being told that she should shut her mouth. She was spitfire and damn, Dean sometimes hated that she was so tough.

“Cas,” he said as Bambi settled herself back into listening. “I mean, Novak, he called me in. Telling me that your brothers all put you down as their emergency contact. They had trouble reaching you, because they didn’t know that you were here.”

“And?”

Dean could feel her fingers squeezing his hand unconsciously. She probably didn’t even know that she was almost hurting him with how hard she was holding on.

“Your brother, Jack. He..uh.. shit, Jamie. He didn’t make it past D-Day. He fell at Omaha beach.” Dean didn’t want to even think that Jack might have been one of the fallen soldiers that Dean had to climb over to retrieve a new rifle. Or maybe Jack was in one of the landing craft that didn’t even made it to shore. Or maybe Jack didn’t get the chance to get off that landing craft and fight when it stopped at the shore, because they had been decimated by fucking Krauts, sitting in their high bunker forts. Dean tried to shake the thought out of his head and he felt his heart sinking again when he looked over to her. Jamie had tears running down her cheeks, but she did nothing to brush them away. She also didn’t say anything. Just stared at him as if she’s trying to let the words sink in.

After a long while, she repeated her brother’s name. “Jack.”

Dean nodded. “Fuck, I’m sorry, Bambi, you know I am.”

“It’s ok.” She said and turned her head to look ahead. The sky on the horizon lit up. There was a fight in the distance. There was always a fight somewhere.

“It’s not all, Jamie.” Fuck, he hated doing this. Hated it with a passion. Then there was a squeeze of Jamie’s hand again, but she didn’t turn her head to meet his eyes. Dean mentally thanked her for that, because he wouldn’t know how to tell her more devastating news while she looked him dead in the eye.

“Jameson. He’s been MIA since Angers. They haven’t found him.”

She brushed away her tears now with the back of her dirty hand, leaving a streak of dirt on her cheek. “He’s my twin, you know that?” It was sudden, Dean wasn’t prepared. He thought that she’d break down and cry, but she didn’t.

“He is?”

She tilted her head towards Dean, grinning. “Yeah. I’m older. He’s my little brother. Not so little because he’s way taller. I got here because of him.”

So, that was how she got in. Dean could imagine Jamie pestering her brother to put down her name. Annoying the shit out of him and being a pain in the ass until Jameson did it. Maybe she didn’t do it with words, but she could sure as hell do it with with her eyes. He couldn’t blame him. Dean knew that if Bambi sets her mind on something, there wasn’t a way that she’d back out of it.

“I’m sorry.” Dean didn’t know what else to say.

“It’s fine. I know that he’s still alive.” She sounded hopeful, as if she really believed that he was alive. Maybe she was right, Dean wouldn’t know. Maybe the Krauts got him. But if Bambi believed it, he wanted to hold on to that, too.

“He is.” Dean said, and sat there in silence with her, his thumb circling on her knuckles.

There was a long pause where they sat and listened to their surroundings. The harbor area was quiet, except for some whispering.

“I’d like to go swimming,” She said out of the blue and Dean raised an eyebrow, wanting to ask her why she was thinking of swimming right now, but he didn’t. He soon realized that it was a way for her to cope and she wasn’t completely different from him. Burying it deep inside and thinking of other things, that, he could.“You know, warm sand underneath my feet. The salt of the ocean in my hair. That’s what we did every so often, went to the beach with the whole family. I mean, my brothers and I.”

“That sounds nice.” Dean agreed. He never did that with Sam. He was too busy, even working on weekends to get by.

She turned her head to meet his eyes. And Jamie smiled despite the tears that were still running down. “What do you think, can we go to the beach once this is all over?”

Dean thought about it. Imagined it. “I…uh.. I’m not too fond of beaches. You know..” To be frank, he hated them since D-Day, but he was not going to tell her that. He wouldn’t tell her that he couldn’t swim, either. It had never been an issue and he could crawl like a dog to keep his head above water, unless his gear would pull him down, but swimming was not really his thing. His dad never taught him and so he couldn’t teach Sam. D-Day was the most swimming Dean did in his life. He was a lucky son of a bitch to not drown.

“I know.” Jamie said, looking ahead. “Would it help if I tell you that I really have a nice two piece swimming suit. My midriff exposed an all.” She grinned cheekily before she turned to face Dean again and he couldn’t help but chuckle.

“Bambi, you trying to seduce me with indecent images of your exposed skin?” Dean tried to sound shocked and took her hand, squeezing it. “I don’t even know if I would agree to it if you walked around naked.”

“With all due respect, sir, I’m going to change your mind.”

Dean grinned at that. “I wanna see you try.”

Later, they walked their sentry route in silence. His knuckles occasionally brushed against hers, and he felt her fingers holding on to him for a fragment of a second. That was enough. The McKeen Motor Cars were the first example of an all steel, self propelled train car design in the world. They were also the first known use of purposeful aerodynamic design in North America, and the first successful use of a motive power other than electric or steam, and in being so, they were the lead into the Diesel/Internal Combustion engine era. Mr. McKeen implemented designs like the single steel sill which (reportedly) held better than two wood sills. (A sill is the Main Center Frame)

The year was 1903, (the same year that the Wright Brothers’ first successful plane flew at Kitty Hawk,) and the Germans had started research in the field of Aerodynamic design, which proved important in the design of high speed vehicles. This information was displayed in the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis, where Mr. McKeen saw the design and noticed it’s similarity to ship hull construction. The same year (1904,) at a dinner in New York, Mr. Harriman, President of the Union Pacific R.R. and Mr. McKeen, of the Motive Power of the U.P., discussed the loses of profit when it came to running steam engines on interurban routes. Mr. McKeen talked about his idea for an aerodynamic train car, and Mr. Harriman about a gasoline engines, of which he saw a gasoline automobile the year before in France. (It is said that Mr. Harriman was more interested in the gasoline automobile than his wife.)

Mr. Harriman sent Mr. McKeen off with $385,000 to build 4 motor cars, of the discussed design, each one better than the last, and the first being of the best known design. (Adjusted for inflation, $385,000 equates to about $10,400,000 today.)

The first McKeen Car was built in 1904-5, and was reported complete in March of 1905. This car was built with a steel frame and wood body, was 31′ feet long, and sat 25 passengers. It had a Riotti 50 H.P. Gasoline engine, which, when tested in the Omaha Yards, proved too weak for a train car of that size, and in two months, a 100 H.P. Riotti engine was fitted before it was sent off to Grand Island, Neb. for further testing.

McKeen Car #2 was finished in September of 1905, was 56′ long, of all steel design, and sat 38 passengers. This car was the first to have a four axles on two trucks. Later on, cars of the short design were 55′ long, and of the long design 70′ long.

The company soon boasted about these designs in advertisements in newspapers, articles, science and railroad magazines. They talked about the knife-edge nose/semi-circle rear, the round windows, the drop-center door, the air ventilation system, the self contained engine inside the vehicle, the water-proof floor (for easy cleaning,) and the 96% mechanical efficiency from the engine to the wheel.

The knife-edge nose and semi-circle back was part of the aerodynamic design. That shape, with a pointed nose and rounded end,was tested by the Germans and showed great reductions in drag. It wasn’t until years afterward that the the round shape was moved to the front, and the point to the back, which, ironically, proved more efficient than McKeen’s design. McKeen boasted in one article that, with a flat front train car, 87.5 H.P. is spent on the air resistance, while on a McKeen car only 21.9 H.P. is spent on the air resistance. That’s a reduction to 1/4 of the amount of force needed.

The round windows were a key feature of the McKeen Motor Cars, and few other car manufacturers used the idea. Mr. McKeen and Mr. Harriman together patented the porthole window design for land use (Note: porthole windows existed on ships before they appeared on land. The windows had a water catch built into the frame, so as it rained, hailed, snowed, etc., the water would pour into the bottom of the frame of the window and drip out thought a hole in the outside of the frame. They were advertised as “Water-Proof, Dust-Proof, and Wind-Proof.” and they were also advertised as a better window than square windows, not only does it not warp over time, like a square window could, but the round window also lifts up, so all of the glass is out of sight, above your head. This was an improvement on the two pane square windows whereas there is always some glass obstructing your view.

The drop-center door invented by McKeen is still used in many trolley cars and buses today. The idea allows the best flow of traffic through two doors. The steps for getting up inside were recessed inside the body of the car, preventing snow, rain, hail, ice, dust, and other things from getting inside like the permanently open Pullman coaches. The Pullman coaches also had the doors on the ends of the car. This meant that in a collision with another train, the doorway would get crushed, and passengers were stuck inside until a hole was opened. McKeen put the door in the center where minimal collapsing would occur. The low steps also allowed people to step on board whether or not you were at a raised platform.

The air ventilation system utilized 2 different ventilators, one for normal all flow, and one to carry the heat from the cooling pipes from inside the coach. The gasoline powered engine created a lot of heat, which could be used to circulate through the car to warm it during cold weather. Some claims reported that the ventilation system didn’t work well, but at least one railroad in New York claimed it worked satisfactorily during the winter.

Visiting Sean’s Grandparents; Spirit Lake & Lake Park, Iowa

Stop #24, Sept 12-19

After a long [and scary] night we arrived at Spirit Lake where I could feel the nostalgia flowing from Sean. He pointed out everything in town that he had a connection with and shared stories from his childhood. We pulled in front of Sean’s grandparents house where Grandma Ghee and Grandpa Tim were waiting outside with big smiles. I was so relieved to finally be here and already felt a strong sense of comfort. I had met Ghee and Tim a few times before while going back to Omaha for an Elser Christmas and was looking forward to spending some more time with them.

We got settled in, showered, and ate some breakfast. Ghee made scotcharoos, which to me is a Christmas cookie delicacy, but now there was a fresh batch for us to enjoy all week long! I couldn’t help myself; even though we had donuts for breakfast I needed a scotcharoo too! After a little while we drove into town for a delicious lunch at Taco House around Okoboji, then drove around the lake town that Sean speaks so highly of. Being after labor day many of the seasonal activities had already come to a close as well as some shops and restaurants. I would love to come back in the heart of summer to enjoy some of that Okoboji magic!

The next morning Sean and I woke up to the most amazing smell for breakfast. Sean had mentioned how he loved Ghee’s monkey bread and POOF, it was there waiting for us for breakfast and still warm. Oh my goodness… that monkey bread was the best thing I’ve ever tasted!! Later in the day she made fresh oatmeal cookies too, and at that point I just accepted that I would put a on few [or more] pounds this week and shouldn’t bother getting back to normal eating until I leave Iowa. Because, of course, she packed up several leftovers for us to take when we leave the next day! At that point I happily accepted stretchy shorts and leggings for the next week.

Later in the day we stopped at Sean’s other grandparents home because my laptop was getting delivered that day, and in case it took longer I gave them the Iowa address we would be at latest. I got my laptop back so quickly, and its working perfectly! Wahoo! This time around the process was a lot smoother.

Sean and I shopped around town for some Kayaks hoping that an end of year sale would get us a great deal. But, with all the extra money I spent on my laptop I decided I’d rather put down a few bucks to rent a kayak when the time comes, rather than buy one right now.

The rest of our time with Ghee and Tim the five of us hung out and spent time catching up. Jaxon was so happy to be in a house with a rug where he could make any spot on the floor his own. We exchanged stories from our trip and life in general. Tim showed us his boat, which he was preparing for the trip they would leave for the next day, and shared some funny stories of Sean and his siblings going out on the boat when they were children. Ghee took out some old photos of Sean, which I especially enjoyed! He was a little Justin Bieber in his high school days!

I really enjoyed Ghee and Tim’s company and loved getting to know them more. Meanwhile, Ghee made sure to fill our bellies with such delicious goodies that even Tim felt like he was on vacation! I forgot to mention we ended every night with ice cream…

The night before Ghee and Tim left for their trip we ate Sean’s favorite for dinner, Godfathers Pizza, which I have come to somewhat enjoy. I’m still a pizza snob; its in my NY blood! But this pie really was delicious, and the four of us enjoyed our last meal together. The next day they left around 7:30am and Sean and I were so sad to say goodbye. I kept telling him how fun it was to hangout with them and that they are really good people whose company I really enjoyed. Ghee told us to stay as long as we’d like and just to lock up before we leave.

After a long lazy morning of sleeping in and eating more sweets for breakfast we finally packed up and left, getting ourselves over to Sean’s other grandparent’s house only 15 minutes away in Lake Park. Coincidentally, they were already on a vacation and were getting back in a few days. So, Sean and I had a lot of down time before actually spending time with Grandma Maxine and Grandpa John.

We spent those few days between doing a variety of things. First, we took out the side by side, AKA the ripper, for a drive all around the farm. The birds were hovering over the corn, the butterflies were fluttering, and the frogs were jumping, as was the mud running through the tires and shooting in the air. After the first ride I learned to keep my mouth closed; my face got hit with mud! The farm is beautiful and really fun to explore.

That night we logged right into netflix to binge watched The Office, our absolute favorite TV show that never gets old. We’ve watched the entire series too many times to count but never cease to find something new to laugh about in every episode. That first night we also raided the fridge and freezer and found some of Maxine’s home cooked meals that we defrosted for the night and the next.

Another day to ourselves Sean spent hours working on the truck while I switched between cleaning the trailer and getting caught up with computer work. Sean could not have been happier working in his grandpa’s machine shed. He had every tool you could possibly need, and light and shelter which meant Sean could work after sunset. It also meant he could leave his tools out and just pause his work for the night not having to clean up like he needed to when he worked in the alley behind our house.

On Sunday the 15th Sean took me to the Clay County Fair for its last day running. Maxine left us two tickets, and I was so exited to check it out! I’ve never been to fair that big, let alone in the middle of Iowa! Well, it sure was huge, and way different than the fairs they had in my home town growing up. Besides the capacity there was tons of livestock competing for who knows what, cheese curd stands, and huuuuuge tractors being sold! Sean and I ate our way through the fair starting off with a smoothie to keep it “light” but then continued to fried cheese curds, a jurassic sized corn dog, and a rib sandwich. Right after we walked through the live stock barn I was all upset about the treatment of the animals, and then we walked into The Chop Shop and had those rib sandwiches. Damn, that was the best I’ve ever had!!!!! Talk about conflicting feelings…. Once we felt sick to our stomachs from the food the heat really started to kick in and we decided to leave.

Grandma Maxine and Grandpa John arrived late Monday night from their bus trip and hung out with us as we all exchanged stories from our trips. After a good nights sleep they took us out to breakfast at their favorite diner, then we spent the afternoon learning how to play the card game Hand and Foot, an Elser favorite! The night ended with a delicious meal and warm apple pie with vanilla ice cream. Both my belly and heart were full <3

The next morning we woke up to the smell of bacon, and while Sean and I were supposed to leave right after breakfast we decided at the very last minute, since we were so comfortable and in such good company, we would stay an extra day. Maxine and I went grocery shopping while Sean continued to work on the trailer, and after a few hours of errands and work we played some more cards. I also took a walk to see the butterflies on the evergreens; there were hundreds right next to their house! It was so beautiful and peaceful to see.

Sean later took me on the swing where I felt like a child again. After a few minutes of getting air and spinning we were suddenly reminded we are not children; both of us got off feeling nauseous. Our bodies cannot tolerate being thrown into the air like they used to! Later that night had our final meal together, although Maxine sent us with lots of food to go.

It was such a pleasure to spend some quality time in Iowa with both of Sean’s grandparents and on the farm. I’ve been saying things along this line, but never in my life did I think I would ever go to Iowa let a lone a farm in Iowa! During 5th grade for my school’s annual “states” project I was assigned Iowa, and all I could remember from that project was that the Iowa State Coin had not come out yet… and CORN! That the extent of my understanding until I met Sean and Josh. Well, it was a blast! Next time we will come during the heart of summer to explore more of Okoboji.

Co based in Evansville, Indiana.[9] His name was based on the fact that he developed his chair based on the science of kinetics that he used while serving in the US Air Force. His design was used by NASA for the seats in Projects Mercury, Gemini and Apollo.

His chairs were used in the ready room for these missions and can be seen in the movie Apollo 13. The Secret Service bought 50 of them for President Lyndon Baines Johnson as a Christmas gift. A Life magazine photo of President Johnson, post gall bladder surgery, has the President lifting his shirt and showing his scar while sitting in one of these chairs.
