SHIFT exhibit presents artistic perspectives on artificial intelligence Last week at Art Museum Stuttgart I saw a really cool exhibit called "SHIFT," which focused on various conceptualizations and manifestations of artificial intelligence (AI), and AI's profound ecological, sociological, political, and economic impacts on the world. The museum's website describes the project: The exhibition project developed by the Kunstmuseum Stuttgart and the Museum Marta Herford deals with artistic perspectives on artificial intelligence (AI). — Read the rest https://boingboing.net/2023/03/19/shift-exhibit-presents-artistic-perspectives-on-artificial-intelligence.html

“A Becoming Resemblance”, Heather Dewey-Hagborg Fridman Gallery, NYC
“30 portraits created by the artist Heather Dewey-Hagborg from cheek swabs and hair clippings sent to her by Chelsea Manning.”
“By algorithmically analyzing DNA extracted from Manning and using it to create 30 portraits of what someone with that genomic data might look like, Dewey-Hagborg has created a trenchant, if somewhat cerebral, commentary on not only the malleability of DNA data – the many ways it can be interpreted, and the inherent determinism of those interpretations – but also identity. ”

For "Stranger Visions," Heather Dewey-Hagborg collected discarded chewing gum and other bits of saliva-covered debris in New York City. Working with a lab to extract DNA, she gathered genetic information corresponding to physical traits and used it to render portraits. The resulting faces have, in the artist’s words, a “family resemblance” to their source, but can never be exact replicas of the individuals. Learn more about genetic surveillance and the ethics of accessing another person’s genetic information without their knowledge in "Designs for Different Futures."
