I feel like putting Hattie McDaniel anywhere near the shadow realm when she didn't even get to compete in the tournament at all offends every strand of my being. She is an icon and is above all of this.

These are ALL the Black female Oscar winners. Ever. So happy for them, but this is so few Black actresses. Hattie McDaniel, the first Black Oscar winner, won in 1940. Ariana DeBose won most recently in 2022. In 80 years, only ten Black actresses have won Oscars and only one of those women, Halle Berry, won Best Actress?

C’est en 1940 que Hattie McDaniel est récompensée d’un oscar une première pour une actrice noire pour son rôle dans le film "Autant en emporte le vent". Elle ne sera pourtant pas autorisée à entrer dans la grande salle de remise des récompenses, où se trouvent tous les acteurs nominés. Hattie McDaniel sera escortée dans un hôtel à quelques pas, afin de ne pas être mélangée aux acteurs blancs, et recevra son prix dans la plus grande des discrétions. Elle jouera au cours de sa carrière dans plus de 300 films, mais ne sera créditée que dans 83. La talentueuse actrice se lancera également dans la chanson, et deviendra la première femme noire de l’histoire à être jouée sur les radios américaines. Hattie McDaniel fera face au racisme et à la ségrégation raciale tout au long de sa carrière. À sa mort en 1952, son dernier souhait être enterrée au cimetière d'Hollywood qui lui a été refusé car le cimetière était réservé seulement aux blancs.
