HI I’M BACK: MOVING ON TO MY SUN-KUN AU !! Might make a masterlist on this who knows. BUT ANYWAYS ONTO AN’S EXPLANATION !!
Before we start, just a few things before we begin (again).
1) This AU takes place after Light Up The Fire (An’s recent event story), stricken by guilt and shame at their defeat with Taiga, Vivid Bad Squad decides to stay in the Street SEKAI until they get their mojo back. Kohane realizes that there are manholes in street SEKAI. This transfers them to another universe’s SEKAI. Sooner or later, they start jumping to more realities because once they start, they can’t stop. Forgetting their original dreams and motivation on why they move realities (surpassing RAD weekend for VBS as well as having Nagi still being alive with An), they become the BAD Vivids who are hopping dimensions to ruin them and cause chaos (in the eyes of others that is.)
2) The RADders previously having street SEKAI is canon in this AU. In this lore, they only had Miku (which is why Miku is the mostly distorted one) and their sekai was only limited to a street SEKAI without the cafe.
3) Taiga is an anti-hero in this AU. Think of him as the Miguel to Vivid Bad Squad’s Miles in a way but at the same time, he’s trying. He’s chilling in the main universe until suspicious things start happening and he, Ken and the vbs npcs (Kotaro, Arata and Tatsuya) team up to find vbs and bring them back.
4) Both groups (RADders + NPCs and VBS) are trying to find their ways to each other to not make the multiverse fall apart or something.
5) Other main project Sekai characters are likely not to be too important but i plan that Ena, the Tenmas and MinoHaru and MizuRui will play a more major role than the others.
An Shiraishi
(Onto my girl)
-> Resides in Dimension X, Living with her dad where Aunt Nagi and Uncle Taiga frequently come and visit. Nagi and Taiga gives An tips on performing and she aims to surpass their main event, RAD Weekend!
wait.. why is this so familiar?
-> She asks her friends: Mizuki Akiyama, a girl who seems bubbly at first but has something hidden deep down, Her friend, Rui Kamishiro, a strange inventor, and his best friend, Nene Kusanagi but they don’t have the same drive as she does and in the end, decides to perform solo for the meantime.
-> She even asks her childhood best friend, Haruka Kiritani to sing with her for a while but alas, she still feels insecure being up on stage whether for idol work or not.
-> Feeling hopeless, she starts to sing on her own for a while, until she sees a girl her age with dark hair sing in WEEKEND Garage.
-> Mesmerized by her singing, she asks if she could join her. Before Kohane could say anything, she presses play on Sun-Kun, sending them to the broken SEKAI.
-> Miku (pink haired apparently, An is confused) gives more insight about their original reality and how their dimension hopping is effecting everyone.
-> An doesn’t listen. She just can’t believe there’s a timeline where Nagi is dead. She is in denial and doesn’t want to listen to Miku, thinking this is all a dream. She kindly asks Kohane to bring her back.
-> An doesn’t join the BAD Vivids until later when all members are complete and she finally lets herself grieve and move forward. Making new memories with everyone.
FUN FACTS:
WEEKEND Garage is always in every dimension they’re in. It is either abandoned (Akito’s and Toya’s dimension) or ran by someone else (Kohane’s dimension).
Nagi is the only person who stays the same no matter how distorted the reality is. This is because she is made up of memories and not actually being effected. She’s kinda like Chiaki but also not. I’m not sure what to do with her character just yet but there ya go!
AKITO AND TOYA’S LORE WILL BE POSTED TOMORROW!! I need to do work lol

The Sky is on the Banks of the Red River / Citrus Breeze -Sunrise- ~ Cosmos Troupe 2018
Tumblr media
For the first time ever I’d been here a full month without seeing any of *my* ladies, and while BADDY was an absolutely thrilling experience worth the sacrifice, my first viewing of Soragumi felt so much like a long-awaited return home I teared up as soon as the prologue started.
Amazing prologue aside, Red River was not my girl Koyanagi-sensei’s best work. Watching it I can imagine why it was tempting for her; Soragumi must be a tricky troupe to write for right now. Not only are they absolutely stacked with tracked talent, tracked?? talent, and non-tracked upperclassmen who nonetheless never fail to land high-profile roles, but they’re unusually stable. With Kiki’s move coming right after Maa’s taidan, essentially the only spot to open up in the last 3+ years has been top musumeyaku. Everyone—particularly 95th downwards—is 3+ years stronger, more polished, and more charming... but they have nowhere to go. Take that and add the retiring Magee and it’s an even bigger conundrum. Red River has A LOT of characters, and it definitely succeeded in giving every one of those people a solid principal role. However, it’s also a very long manga, and in an effort to give everyone a juicy character I think Koyanagi tried to stuff way too many storylines into a measly hour and a half. I got everything because I read the manga ahead of time, but I think it would have been difficult to understand even for a Japanese person who has not read it (it almost felt like watching the shinko of a 2-act, where they abridge it on the assumption you already know the whole story). Also unfortunate: while the characters’ storylines do all ultimately intertwine, they unfold very much separately, such that it often doesn’t make sense to have them on the stage at the same time. As a result a bunch of the major roles, while distinctly juicier somehow, wound up with less actual stage time than some of the more minor roles. On the plus side it was visually nice, pretty good for some unexpected people, and definitely gets a passing grade for stage fighting, which, I’ve recently come to appreciate, is something that gives certain troupes a great deal of difficulty, making it oh so satisfying when it’s done well (I assume? It’s possible it was only done well in my very narrow Soravision). Makaze and Madoka have also DRAMATICALLY improved their harmony sound since West Side Story. It hit me right in the chest.
People will be quick hits, as there was not exactly room for deep character exploration in this show:
Makaze seemed to relish all the campiest parts of playing a shoujo manga love interest, from her delivery of the ridiculous lines to her execution of the overly aggressive “romantic” gestures. Plus she’s just downright handsome, and absolutely believable as the greatest warrior prince given her stature.
I thought Madoka was absolutely wonderful given the limitations of the role, which winds up fairly badass but is still a sixteen year old girl. Madoka played Yuuri with amazing strength, and she’s such a natural actress even the groan-worthy manga lines came out passable. Someday I hope they let her play an actual adult though.
Kiki was a favorite less in terms of Ramses as a character and more in terms of this continued evolution of New Kiki. It was not as much of a shocking portrayal as some of her recent characters (Bernardo, whatever that dude’s name is in Yamataikoku), but still definitely a progression for how effortless it came off. Even as the nibante she’s not exactly on stage all the time, but outside of the prologue she gets the best song. A+++ on the visuals too.
Aichan as the Prince of Darkness and Akkii as Nefertiti kind of fall into the same category for me (I just realized writing that that they play siblings, but that’s not why). I feel like they both had extremely minimal stage time and storylines stuffed in at great pains (especially Aichan), and relied entirely on the wow factor of their visuals to give their roles weight—Aichan as the stereotypical dark sexy dude in an impressive floor-length wig, and Akkii as a very glitzy queen. If we hadn’t had to send off Magee and thus had one more prominent role open, I’d say the story would have benefitted from cutting the Prince of Darkness storyline entirely.
Seiko as Queen Nakia and Magee as her sidekick Urhi are the real villains of the manga, and in the rushed storytelling I think we lose a bit of how truly diabolical they are. I think I’m less frustrated with Nakia simply because I’m delighted that that’s the role Seiko landed, but Magee’s involvement felt extremely subdued.
Zunchan is once again the perfect little brother, but is betrayed and killed fairly early.
To my VERY PLEASANT SURPRISE, Riku, Sora, and Makise, who I assumed would wind up being Nobodies 1, 2, and 3 respectively, somehow wound up benefitting from the storyline battle among the principal characters; while they weren’t exactly blessed with a wealth of lines, they were on stage a lot, and actually contributed quite a bit to the general progression of things with their wordless background acting. No idea how much of that will show up on the DVD, but in the theater it was a joy to watch. Special shout-out to Sora slow-motion kicking Moeko’s ass all the way on the right wing of the stage while Makaze and Kiki have their dramatic final wrestle in the middle.
And a few people really lucked out! I have no idea who Mitsuki Haruka bribed to land Ilbani, but that’s the most I can ever remember her doing in a Grand Theater show (not complaining, I adore her). Fuuma Kakeru was a disheveled old man, but got her OWN! SOLO! and a very passionate one at that (more solos for Kakeru 2k4ever). And Manami Hikaru, armed with youth and shortness, benefitted from the fact that Tito, a fairly major character, is a literal child.
I LOVE CITRUS BREEZE WITH ALL MY HEART.
I remember thinking right around when Tsukigumi started in the Grand Theater that Citrus Breeze is the perfect thing to follow BADDY, because one has no choice but to forgive its lack of innovation in light of Soragumi’s 20th anniversary. I TAKE IT BACK because that implies that there is SOMETHING TO FORGIVE. It’s old, and it’s definitely on the wholesome side, which is not usually my thing... but it’s perfect. I love the songs, I love the dance numbers, I love the costumes, I love the big round 1970s music variety show light bulbs screwed into the sets that radiate nostalgia. Much of it is the same old Citrus Breeze, but—and it’s possible this is because I’ve only seen past versions in the form of mediocrely rendered Sky Stage recordings—this one felt so bright and polished and perfected. I’m pretty certain it’s my favorite.
Highlights, though it’s hard not to just say all of it:
Kiki’s Paradiso scene, basically only as long as it takes to saunter across the ginkyou once, but plenty to take in in that short time (I was most struck by how expertly she spread her hand on her hat at the final pose)
Mr. Bojangles, a shoo-in for favorite if Asu e no Energy didn’t exist, for a) Kumichou center b) SPATS and c) Sora dancing on a level so OTHER that it hurt my stomach
The chuuzume, which instead of being the fire-up type is just beautiful in a heartbreaking way
Madoka’s opera. I knew she was talented but I didn’t know she had that in her. She’s so stunningly beautiful in that scene too (and something about a heartbroken Kiki throwing down a glove to duel just kinda makes you wanna cry).
Chiaki hamming up the center of the rockette with these knowing expressions that are mostly fun but definitely also a little dangerous
Asu e, I bawled through it both times and listened to it on loop through my full 8 hour work nights 3 days in a row. The old Japanese lady next to me the second night screamed WOOOO all by herself at the end of it and I was so happy. Sora’s dancing, once again, a whole other level.
More than one lovely sendoff scene for Magee
And the SUNRISE bit, a very classic otokoyaku dance in bedazzled white tails in front of a burning sun, not out of place in the wholesomeness of the rest of the revue but with just enough fire to melt you the exact right amount.
I’ve SEEN IT and I knew I’d LIKE IT but I didn’t expect to love it THIS MUCH. I could watch it 1000 times.

Top Ten Favourite Female Seiyuu
My first one didn’t do a whole lot of justice, so I decided to have another go at it! Here we go! Time to edit this up!
I notice that I didn’t include as many female seiyuu in my honourable mentions, but that’s because I had an easier time choosing here! I kind of knew what voices I liked from the beginning. I also don’t like the really high pitched annoying characters sometimes (with exceptions), so that was taken into consideration.
Some honourable mentions that I didn’t get the chance to mention were: Yuu Kobayashi, Ami Koshimizu, Chiwa Saito, Marina Inoue, Mai Nakahara, and Mamiko Noto. I love their voices and their roles, but I haven’t watched a whole lot of them either in anime or singing. I also seem to remember seiyuu more from their characters, and it’s a real shame that there aren’t as many female anime characters that are as well developed as their male counterparts which is why I don’t remember their characters as often. But most of it is just because I haven’t watched their major work yet.
Honourable Mentions:
Sakura Ayane
Tumblr media
I just wanted to give a shout out to her because her performance of Uraraka is amazing, and she really nails her positive personality. She plays a range of other characters (sadly I haven’t watched most of them). I’ve been impressed by her other characters as well. Niwatori in Juuni Taisen has such an innocent personality at first, and even though it wasn’t a very good anime, she gave this character a lot of life despite being a character with only one episode of development. Haru in Nisekoi was the annoying little sister nobody wanted, but I’m proud of the fact that she makes me hate some characters that she plays because I think that’s the point most of the time. Suzuka from Tokyo Ravens is another example of this. That doesn’t mean she doesn’t have range though. Her role as Ryouko in Tsurezure Children surprised me. Roles: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yh6QDBvTn34 Singing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OpV6YFq6SrU Bonus: https://youtu.be/DRUzKPD68W0
Aoi Yuuki
Tumblr media
Range. Just range. I can’t tell it’s her ever. Just never. I originally knew her for voicing Tsuyu from My Hero Academia, but after searching her up, I realized her range. Even though I didn’t watch most of the anime she has done, just clips of it can give you the biggest shock of a lifetime. I didn’t realize she was Kayo from Erased, Madoka from Madoka Magica, Tatsumaki from One Punch Man, Diane from The Seven Deadly Sins, and Lulu in League of Legends. She apparently also games. Roles: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D7pnmeV3MD0 Singing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q1C4bmNIWyA
Aya Hirano
Tumblr media
(I couldn’t find a gif of her, but have a Haruhi)
Okay, so maybe she has fallen off the grid for a bit, but the reason for some people now hating her is really stupid. I won’t get into it, but people are allowed to have lives outside of their work. Who would’ve known? Besides that, she is a talented singer who I know for voicing Lucy from Fairy Tail and Haruhi from The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. She is also known for her role as Konata in Lucky Star and Misa in Death Note. Roles: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dcDIA_VDyXA Singing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WWB01IuMvzA (wow this song is catchy)
NOW FOR THE LIST!
10. Maaya Uchida
Tumblr media
This is slightly bias because she did just such a good job playing Hiyori. I love her voice and can’t imagine anyone else playing one of my favourite characters. With that being said, I think the best role I’ve seen from her, but she has done a ton of other roles too. Takanashi Rikka from  Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai! is another role that stands out to me. She truly makes me want to believe alongside her with her “eighth-grade syndrome”. Alluka from Hunter x Hunter is a role I didn’t expect, but I thought for the few clips I watched it was amazing and bone-chilling. I haven’t watched Rea from Sankarea, Yusa from Charlotte, and a bunch of other roles. Roles: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YkGPh-BIoHo Singing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KYSz35K8LaM
9. Mizuki Nana
Tumblr media
Wow. I have a hard time recognizing her too, but maybe that’s because of her incredible range. On top of being a singer, she’s a tremendously talented voice actor. I know her as the soft-toned Hinata, but she has so many other roles. I haven’t watched a lot of her more prominent roles, but I have watched her as Hakuei Ren in Magi, Lan Fan in Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, and Kisaki in WWW.Working! She has several other roles that I haven’t watched. The reason she has been placed this high on this list is that of the range I’ve seen in her performance and that craziness of her voice. Roles: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SZpcbDTZhbw Singing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qBO64zFAF1Q
8. Romi Park
Tumblr media
(I couldn’t find a gif)
Yes. Her range is amazing. Edward Elric was given a voice by her. She is relatable, and she’s bilingual (and possibly trilingual) too! She speaks Korean and she has studied English! I haven’t watched a lot of shows with her in it (or at least completely), but here are a few roles that you might know her from. Ganta from Deadman Wonderland, Toshirou from Bleach, Temari from Naruto, Akane from Danganronpa, Switzerland from Hetalia, Angelina from Black Butler, Hange from Attack on Titan, and so many other roles! She’s really good at singing too! She’s so talented! Side note: She often represents Arakawa Hiromu (the mangaka of Fullmetal Alchemist), and I didn’t notice until now. Wow. Roles: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tgmvx1yfr4Q Singing: (in English apparently) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tgmvx1yfr4Q (Japanese) https://youtu.be/cWbMom6MDCE
7. Tomatsu Haruka
Tumblr media
Weirdly, sometimes I have a hard time recognizing her voice. She has voiced such a large range of characters. She was one of the characters who gave me feels in Anohana where she played Anaru. I had so much fun watching a clip of Gintama’s genderbend where she played a female Gintoki. She was an independent protagonist in a shoujo as Shizuku in Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun and the Miyakoshi horrible cook who kills in WWW.Working. Other people might know her as Asuna from SAO, Megumi from Accel World, Shiro from Tokyo Ghoul, Ichika from Waiting in Summer, Rena in ReLife, Megumi from Shiki, and now you might know her as Zero Two in Darling in Franxx. But my favourite role from her is definitely Morgiana from Magi. She was such a badass, and I loved every minute with her on screen. She has so many other roles, and she sings really well too. Roles: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zQOmY_gFQrE Singing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zwEofctFN3E
6. Kana Hanazawa
Tumblr media
She has done so many characters and is really popular. I love a lot of her roles, but this list is full of only the best of the best, so number 6 isn’t that bad! I love a good number of the characters she does too. She made me absolutely despise her in Akame Ga Kill as Seryuu. She was great as Shiemi from Blue Exorcist and broke my heart a little as Kanade from Angel Beats. I loved her little side roles as Lucy from Bungou Stray Dogs and as Kougyoku Ren from Magi. Sonohara from Durarara, Natsume from Tokyo Ravens, Chiaki from Danganronpa, and Onodera from Nisekoi are just a few other roles I’ve watched from her. I hope to watch Psychopass, the Monogatari series, Orange, Sakurada Reset, and Steins;Gate. Roles: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VDC6SpI3xA0 Singing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z-caezFDfTs
5. Sora Amamiya
Tumblr media
She voices so many cool characters! Her portrayal of Akame was awesome. I was in it since then. But like all these other actors: range. I mean, Aqua from Konosuba is a character I despise, but she plays her brilliantly and makes me hate her so much. Other characters I’ve watched her play are Elise from Bungou Stray Dogs, Natsuki in Anthem of the Heart, Elizabeth in The Seven Deadly Sins, Touka in Tokyo Ghoul, and Shiho in WWW.Working. She has a lot of other roles too! Roles: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AaQsOj9RUOY Singing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q9IN61D92OY https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rb85LQHEdqU Bonus: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SQR5UM9VeyE
4. Saori Hayami
Tumblr media
She’s so cool. I’ve seen her play Chiriko from Anohana, Himawari from Boruto, Sharyuu from Juuni Taisen, and Emi from Your Lie In April. One of her most outstanding role for me was Shirayuki. I wouldn’t have it any other way because she gives her such a feeling of elegance, humility, and innocence. But one of the best roles I’ve seen from her is as Shouko from A Silent Voice. That movie shocked me and left me absolutely stunned. Her portrayal was timeless, moving, and amazing. I was hit in the feels, and her performance along with Miyu Irino will probably stay with me forever. She sings some good OPs, but she can also scream at the top of her lungs and play some insane characters. Just look at Kakegurui. I have only seen a couple of scenes from that anime, but there are so many other roles that I want to see from her! Serebryakova, Viktoriya Ivanovna from Youjo Senki, Urara from Yamada, Yukino from SNAFU, Yutsugi from the Monogatari series, Minami from Tokyo Ghoul (Jack), Shinoa from Owari no Seraph, Saki from Higashi no Eden, and several other roles! Roles: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AhBvZWG8oRQ Singing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n_9PWDkqbcs
3. Rie Kugimiya
Tumblr media
Okay wow. She’s amazing. Alphonse Elric has such a childish and innocent personality that was aided by her voice. She gave Taiga the perfect tsundere voice. She gives Kagura life and energy with her high-pitched voice. Those are my top three roles from her. Nobody else would ever be able to top those. Nora from Noragami is a character that I love to hate. I really want to watch her as Shana in Shakugan no Shana and as Juuzo from Tokyo Ghoul, and even though she doesn’t have as many roles that I want to catch up on, she plays three anime characters that I love. Her voice is the only one I hear when I see those three characters, and I would love to see her in other works as well. Roles: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mL6wgRNtkcc Singing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ayJdEzhqQ0I
2. Maaya Sakamoto
Tumblr media
Holy moly her singing voice is really good. Her relationship with Kenichi Suzumura is so sweet, and I wouldn’t have found out about him if it wasn’t for her. She can play little girls, boys, and wonderfully beautiful well-developed androgynous characters. Her role in Kara no Kyoukai as Shiki sends chills down my spine. It almost distracted from the fact that I had no clue about the timeline. She portrayed the craziest Crona in Soul Eater was absolutely insane. Scherezade from Magi was another role I’ve seen from her. Nino from Arakawa Under the Bridge was so quirky and wonderful, and I loved her weirdness. Haruhi was another role from her that I absolutely loved. She was calm, talented, and played a nice protagonist that I liked compared to the rest of the main cast. But I have so much catching up to do on her other roles because she has so many! Motoko from Ghost in a Shell, Falangies from Arslan Senki, Shinobu in the Monogatari series, Ciel in Black Butler, Merlin in the Seven Deadly Sins, and Eto and Sen from Tokyo Ghoul. She is such a badass because she plays a lot of cool characters. Roles: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=coN0PuJrp_o Singing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5j74CRP-QCA https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4SL_Hd4ItPw
1. Miyuki Sawashiro
Tumblr media
She is honestly such a nice person. I watched a segment with her and her brother. She sounds like an awesome older sister. She plays so many badass women. Bishamon is honestly such a caring badass goddess who takes in people because she wants to care for them. She is a respectable goddess who is one of my favourite Noragami characters. Celty is a mysterious biker who is also a badass. Even though she barely speaks literally in Durarara, Miyuki reads her texts perfectly. The quest to find what she has been missing is one of my favourite sides of the story. Seo from Gekkan Shoujo is an inspiration who I love to this day. She’s one of my favourite characters, and I always rewatch her scenes. I have also seen her as Kusaribe in Zetsuen no Tempest (which I didn’t really like), Isasawa in Angel Beats, Touko in Danganronpa, Ul and Ultear in Fairy Tail, and Ayane in Kimi ni Todoke. I want to watch a lot more anime with her in the future including Shion in Psychopass, Sugura in the Monogatari series, Toto Sakigami in Deadman Wonderland, Seri in K, Shane in Charlotte, Kira in Btooom, Leona in Yamada, Himeko in Kokoro Connect, Kana in Kiseijuu, and Kurapika from Hunter x Hunter. I love her voice and her singing. She apparently knows how to play the piano too. I can’t even express in words how much respect I have for her. Roles: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lAcgJyuO5rM Singing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4AM5OaDR-5U Bonus: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oBhlM0UpHLU
I think this concludes the list. I had such a hard time coming up with the order. I love my female seiyuu picks, and if you know anyone that I missed that I should’ve mentioned, just tell me! There aren’t that many female seiyuu Tumblr accounts though, so if you know any, send those to me too!
Shout out to @akaskira for this idea!

Anime Review: Rahxephon
Ayato Kamina is a normal teenage boy living a normal life in the city of Tokyo. He lives with his oddly distant mother, has good friends, and one day comes across a mysterious girl called Reika Mishima. That same day, Tokyo is attacked by a horrific being of stone and sound known as a Dolem, and Ayato finds himself wrapped up in a conspiracy that sees him whisked away to a world away from his own, through the help of a newly-awakened golem called the Rahxephon.
Pretty soon Ayato is fighting for his own life and for the continued existence of the human race, as more and more Dolems controlled by the alien Mu threaten to take over humanity once and for all. Only a small resistance of fighters, including the dedicated Haruka Shitow, slimy Makoto Isshiki and the very odd Quon, have a chance against the invaders. And pretty soon, Ayato begins to find out more and more about his own past, the pasts of the people around him, and the true power and purpose of the Mu...
So let’s see; we have a stroppy teenage boy who drives around in a big bio-robot thing, being looked after by a middle-aged woman with serious issues, working with two teenage girls one of whom is outgoing and aggressive and the other of whom is quiet and mysterious, all the while working for a secret organisation against an inhuman enemy who attack using creepy, eldritch horrors, and...there’s a reporter who butts his nose in at everything...and a harsh stern leader...and morally bankrupt people behind the leader with their own agendas and...everything seems to lead back to Ayato’s...mother...
Yeah, okay, this is Evangelion, this is Evangelion, this BLOODY SHOW tricked me into watching BLOODY EVANGELION AGAIN SON OF a-
‘slams door’
...
‘quietly opens door, sits down and continues with the review’
So yeah, uh, Rahxephon is ridiculously similar to a little show which you might not have heard of, and one which I am really not a fan of.
Does this show do Evangelion any better than Evangelion does Evangelion?
Eh...kinda. Sorta. Maybe.
Let’s start with the very best thing about this show; the visuals. Rahxephon is an early original work from Studio Bones, and like so much of their work it looks gorgeous. The animation itself is phenomenal for the early 2000s, and there is so much wonderful direction and artistry on display, in particular with the designs and animation on the Dolems themselves, which are both hauntingly beautiful and distinctly unsettling, deeply human and yet clearly artificial and earthen. Then there’s the Rahxephon itself, and as giant robots go, I think I love its design more than any other I’ve seen; it’s fluid and graceful, with a wonderful angelic motif throughout its design. If I was to pilot a giant robot, I’d want it to look like this. I also have to praise Bones for their work on the characters themselves, although I think a lot of that is down to the general style of the time, which I really like. Strong, expressive characters, all of whom look different and none of whom default to the generixpressions which you see all over the place.
The music is also rather beautiful, with an opening theme song by Yoko Kanno which does exactly what you’d expect. It makes sense for the music to be good, given the show’s overall theme of sound and the voice, and there are a lot of nice little touches and good sound design here and there, particularly with the Dolems which actually exhibit their power through voice. The one particular thing does bug me is, again, the sad comparison I have to make with Evangelion. See, there’s a particular piece in Evangelion called Decisive Battle, which is an aggressive driving timpani and brass piece playing during scenes of particular tension. Okay, so listen to that, and then listen to the piece in the Rahxephon OST called “The Chariot.”
Eerily similar, aren’t they?
I need to address the elephant in the room here; yes, while Rahxephon is trying very hard to be its own beast, it is very clearly inspired by Evangelion, in a time when there were a fair few shows trying very hard to ride on Eva’s success. There are distinct scenes and character dynamics taken straight from the former series, the story goes in much the same direction (right down to the ending  where a lot over very bad things happen to our favourite characters) and a lot of the writers and staff members were even working on the former show. It’s very hard to watch Rahxephon and say that it wasn’t in some way inspired by Evangelion’s success.
That being said, Rahxephon takes the bare-bones concept of Eva and turns the story into something all its own. The characters may be similar, but their stories and interactions are very different. The show’s concept is similar, but its aesthetic and viewpoint is something all its own.
And in some ways it’s nice to see a different take on the same story. Whereas Eva is very much Hideaki Anno’s project, and all the ups and downs that came with it, Rahxephon is a collection of people coming together each to put their own spin on the same idea. Rahxephon is no on person’s baby; Ichiro Okouchi, Chiaki Konaka, Youji Enokido and other big-name writers and directors all had a go at certain episodes, very much making this a team effort. It’s something you don’t see that often nowadays, with people genuinely flocking to ‘the director’ or ‘the creator’ of a certain work. Collabs are cool is all I’m saying.
These new ideas and takes on Eva’s concepts continue to the characters, which in many ways are the complete opposites of Anno’s characters. Ayato is a great lead; very clearly a stroppy teenager (with the added bonus of being a tortured artist) but he is immensely relatable and often rather likeable. The show drip-feeds information about him, his past, and the past of those around him, and there is no recurring character who I could outright call unrelatable. Sure, some of them are a bit undeveloped, but it’s a large cast, and when even your slimy villains have a lot of depth to them, it’s testament to the effort going in.
I will take a brief side-note here to talk about the dub, which I ended up watching pretty much because I had the DVD and though ‘why not?’. For an older dub, it’s not half-bad; it has the ‘overly-cinematic’ feel that comes with a lot of these shows, but it’s helped by a lot of genuinely good actors. Monica Rial is good as Haruka, Hilary Haag is great as Megu, and Chris Patton steals every scene he’s in as Ayato, nailing the character to a tee. The only major player who feels a little bit off is Illich Guardiola as Isshiki; he’s not ‘bad’, per se, but his performance never feels particularly natural. I’m going to blame misdirection more than anything else because more than anything he just sounds like he’s say ing eve r ee thing com pleet lee pho ne ti ca lee. But hey, it’s listenable, and by the end of the series he’s gotten the hang of the character.
That’s the other thing with the show; for as much as it improves on the likeablility of Eva’s cast, when it comes to the story issues it suffers from a lot of the same problems. In fact the two are largely the same in a lot of areas; starting solidly, introducing the stakes, have some deeply meaningful character-driven battles and scenes, then slowly but surely pulling apart the logic and explanation until the ending happens and you’re just left there wondering what the heck you just witnessed.
It’s because of this that I can’t really call Rahxephon a ‘better’ show than Evangelion. It certainly had a lot of effort going in to make it ‘as good’, and it has a style and beauty all its own. But the characters and story do kind of follow the same formulas, and fall into the same pitfalls along the way, except that when Evangelion did it, the pitfalls matched up with the human nature of the cast. It’s hard not to watch Rahxephon and feel a little bit of artificiality; after all, we’ve seen this story before.
But at the same time, the end result is something completely different. Rahxephon’s story is, ultimately, an optimistic one; a coming-of-age tale and a fairy tale and a hopeful glance to the future. And it’s because of this that I love it far, far more than I could ever love Evangelion. Eva’s story is deeply resonant and a harsh look into the human psyche and the depths of depression, and is based off a worldview so departed from my own that I can’t help but reject the show entirely. Some people can watch Eva and find beauty and meaning. I am not one of those people. Sorry.
So it’s in that regard that I love the fact that Rahxephon exists, and, shallow as it may seem, that somebody created a show under the same idea that follows my own worldview. Rahxephon is a beautiful and well-executed show, and a solid recommendation to anyone. I can’t call it ‘great’ same as I can’t call Evangelion ‘great’; both of them have very similar flaws in story and their overall endings. However it is still well-worth a watch, with the slight caveat that you really do need to watch Evangelion first; love it or hate it, it is an experience that will stay with you and one of the most iconic shows you will ever see.
In summary: Is Rahxephon better than Evangelion? No. Did I enjoy it more? Oh yes. Which should you watch? Evangelion for the experience, then Rahxephon for a new and different take on it. Between the two, you should find something you enjoy.
(And then you should watch Bokurano because it surpasses them both)
My score: 7/10
