North Kensington has been bracing itself for the arrival of the fifth anniversary of the Grenfell Tower Fire today. The inquiry rolls on with its constant revelations about the rot at the heart of our corporate and political cultures, and the Grenfell families and survivors are left waiting for a semblance of justice. As we look back, we also look, with trepidation and distrust, towards any possibility of a better and more holistic approach to problems of building and fire safety.

St. Patrick's Day seems like a good time to say this: U.K., your government is made up of cartoon supervillains.
Say what you will about America and our horrific, deadly gun problem. At least our family-filled public housing doesn't burn down.

Graffiti at the foot of Trelick Tower, North Kensington
Whilst some of the graffiti is completely random, the wall also contains the names of those who died in the nearby Grenfell Tower fire tragedy.

Hubb Kitchen 2.0
From Scobie, Endgame:
It was a shaky start for the couple's charitable foundation, too. They launched the Sussex Foundation in the summer of 2019, but a source working on the project later told me that plans for the non-profit were ultimately shelved as Harry and Meghan didn't want to focus on providing grants, an effort that requires constant fundraising. The Archewell Foundation's launch in October 2020 came with grand ambitions to provide something different, but as the months went by they realized again that grants would become the ballast for this foundation as well. No shame in that, and the money given out has gone on to do great things, such as helping move eight thousand individuals out of Afghanistan with the Human First Coalition and providing additional resoruces to the tech-focused civil rights advocacy organization Color of Change. For a couple who want to create change around a myriad of issues, it makes sense that they have so many irons in the fire. But at the time of this writing, two and a half years into the foundation's life, the true purpose and mission of their charitable vehicle is still not completely clear. A lot of everything, but little in terms of major anchoring projects. As it turns out, the grant work they avoided at first has taught them how to support small charities and build new partnerships. Now, said the head of the foundation and former Kensington Palace aide James Holt, a 'significant change' in direction will become more visible over the next two years. Moving forward, programs are being developed with a key thread in all three areas of the foundation's work--mental health. It starts with the couple's efforts to build a better online world, which includes a project and partnership with the Social Media Victims Law Center and families who have suffered the most extreme impacts of social media. Linking back to Harry's media battles, Archewell is also seeking ways to 'restore trust in information.' As well as looking at structural reform, a spokesperson added that they want to use their platform to 'promote and highlight media organizations they think are doing the right thing.' And the third area is uplifting communities. Picking up from Meghan's work supporting victims of the 2017 Grenfell Tower fire tragedy in London, who came together to prepare food for displaced residents and the wider community, the foundation is introducing the sentiment and drive behind the Hubb Community Kitchen to communities across the United States. By mid-2023, ten projects were already quietly in pilot phases (from sewing groups to cooking clubs), with a focus on women-led initiatives supporting Afghan immigrants who fled the Taliban. Archewell's decision to work with William Morris Endeavor (WME), a powerhouse agency headquartered in Beverly Hills, has also helped the duke and duchess accelerate soem of their charitable work. 'It takes a long time to build a lasting legacy but this is their life's work,' said a Sussex spokesperson.
But no, Scobie isn't Meghan's lapdog. He doesn't know six months in advance that she is cooking with Afghan immigrants and there will be a photoshoot on Superbowl Weekend to go with her umpteenth rebranding effort.

I was watching Thunderbirds' Terror in New York City this morning and it's uncanny how that episode predicted not one but two real-life events that occurred many years later. First, Thunderbird 2's altercation with the Sentinel predicted the fate of Iran Air flight 522 in 1988,and then the collapse of the Empire State Building predicted the destruction of the World Trade Centre in 2001. Perhaps not surprisingly, this episode was pulled from Boomerang's broadcasts of Thunderbirds in the wake of 9/11, but the phrase life intimidates art certainly rings true here. And it's not the only time Thunderbirds predicated real-life events years later; City of Fire predicted the Grenfell Tower disaster, The Mighty Atom predicted Chernobyl and Operation Crash-Dive predicted the 737 MAX scandal. I wonder if some of the writers were clairvoyant!

I'm from the UK and the Grenfell tower fire is one of the few things that British broadcasters agree shouldn't be shown. Yes, there is footage of the flames, but due to how many people died and suffered in the blaze, it isn't shown out of respect.
The fact that Netflix chose to shown the tower burning whilst dozens of people were dying inside to promote themselves truly makes my heart ache.
#JusticeForGrenfell
I saw Cameron Walker say the same, and it's appalling but not surprising that Netflix used the footage. No one in that team knows the first thing about the UK, let alone how to respect them.

Okay, wow, so a bunch of new people followed me. Hi! *waves shyly*
So just for a little Podcast 101 introduction:
My name is Jennifer and I’ve been doing this podcast since the very last day of 2015. I’m a neurodivergent bisexual with a very cute beagle mix named Professor Pancakes. I like road trips, gay romance novels, and little crafty things like paint by numbers kits and mini DIY dollhouses. My personal Tumblr is @trollprincess.
Each episode of the podcast is focused on one disaster in particular, although I do sometimes stretch one disaster over multiple episodes if necessary. For example, not long ago I covered the Grenfell Tower fire, which took three episodes. I’ve also covered tangentially related emergency organizations and groups like care teams and the RNLI.
I wish I could say I get an episode out a week, but I have two other jobs, one full-time on the weekends and one part-time during the week, so episodes come out when they come out. To get them early, I have a Patreon for the podcast which can be found at the link below. I post episodes there as soon as I record them, and they’re also ad-free there.
My definition of “disaster” is pretty broad. I will cover anything from shipwrecks and plane crashes to financial disasters (“Cats” the movie is on my request list) to DashCon. Yes, I did an episode on DashCon. I couldn’t resist. (It’s episode 132, fyi.)
As an addendum to that, I also cover mass shootings. (It’s my podcast, I make the rules.) The rule for me on covering mass shootings is that the shooter’s name will only be mentioned once, if that, and that each victim will be named if possible.
As an addendum to THAT, disasters and tragedies can be very difficult subject matter. Please understand that episodes may feature death and destruction and decide accordingly if listening to each episode will be good for you and your mental health. I provide more specific trigger warnings at the start of each episode if necessary, but I will completely understand if a new episode is not something you’re comfortable listening to and you’d rather go watch Taskmaster or something.
There will be mentions of politics in episodes, but very much because emergency declarations, evacuations, regulations, etc. are an important part of disaster response. I also talk about mental health a lot, both for my own sake and to normalize talking about it. Like I said, difficult subject matter.
I am not a conspiracy theory sort of person. Don’t expect me to use the phrase “false flag” with anything other than sarcastic disdain.
You don’t have to start at the first episode! Honest. The first episodes of a podcast are almost a mess with people trying to find their footing, and this one is not any different. I’m not perfect, and I make mistakes, but I’m totally up for correcting myself if I screw up.
Every hundredth episode I cover a fictional disaster like a real one. Episode 100 was the attack on Nakatomi Plaza, and Episode 200 was the events aboard Trans American Flight 209. I’ve got a while before I decide what to do for episode 300.
Episodes I’d recommend: I’m very proud of episode 170 about United 93 (I read and watch everything I can get my hands on about 9/11, but I don’t plan to cover the whole event on the podcast because with the way I cover disasters, it’d be twenty episodes long at LEAST). I also very much recommend Episode 72 on the “Twilight Zone: The Movie” helicopter crash, mostly because someone told me to stop mentioning American movies so much so I did a whole episode in which I mentioned as many movie set disasters as possible. I’m also absurdly proud of myself for the Chernobyl series, because I never did finish the AIDS series and I learned I very much could pull it off. (I did mispronounce roentgen, but that’s on me.)
If you listen to older episodes, I have taken requests in the past but I am currently on hold with those because my request list right now is at 62 disasters. (Yes, including “Cats”.) So give it a little bit and let me get a few more done and we’ll see if we can start those back up again. 🙂
Thanks so much for being here!
