From Triumph to Tragedy: COVID-19's Devastating Blow on Poverty Eradication
Tumblr media
The year 2020 will forever be remembered as a time of unparalleled upheaval, as the COVID-19 pandemic took the world by storm, leaving behind a trail of destruction in its wake. Beyond the tragic loss of lives, the pandemic also unleashed a devastating blow on the global economy and disrupted social systems, derailing the remarkable progress made against poverty over the past four years. The journey towards eradicating poverty that had shown promising strides now stands overshadowed by a daunting reality. This article delves into the impact of COVID-19 on poverty eradication efforts, examining the setbacks, challenges, and potential pathways to recovery.
The Pre-COVID Progress
Before the pandemic struck, significant strides had been made in the battle against poverty. Numerous developing countries had reported declining poverty rates, improvements in education, and better access to healthcare. Global organizations like the World Bank and the United Nations were optimistic that we were moving closer to achieving the Sustainable Development Goal of eradicating extreme poverty by 2030.
Governments, NGOs, and philanthropic organizations were working together, implementing targeted interventions to lift millions out of poverty. Investments were being made in education and vocational training, empowering individuals with skills to secure better-paying jobs. Microfinance initiatives provided small loans to entrepreneurs, fostering local economic growth and self-sustainability. Moreover, access to healthcare has improved through the expansion of health facilities and immunization programs.
The Unforeseen Blow of COVID-19
Enter COVID-19, and the world witnessed an unprecedented human and economic crisis. Lockdowns, travel restrictions, and social distancing measures were put in place to curb the spread of the virus, leading to the shutdown of businesses, the loss of jobs, and disruptions in supply chains. The most vulnerable segments of society were hit hardest, plunging many back into poverty.
Informal workers, day laborers, and those in the gig economy were left without job security or access to social safety nets. Women, who had made significant strides in the workforce, faced a disproportionate burden as they juggled work, childcare, and household responsibilities during the lockdowns.
The Toll on Global Poverty
According to the World Bank, the COVID-19 pandemic pushed an estimated 100 million people into extreme poverty in 2020, erasing more than four years of progress against poverty eradication. The setback was particularly severe in Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia, where poverty rates surged due to the combined impact of health and economic crises.
School closures further exacerbated the situation, with millions of children unable to access education. This could have far-reaching consequences, as education is a crucial pathway to breaking the cycle of poverty. The disruption in education has the potential to create a lost generation of children who are deprived of the knowledge and skills they need to thrive in the future.
The Hidden Toll on Women
COVID-19 also exposed and amplified existing gender inequalities. Women, who often bear the brunt of poverty, found themselves at the frontline of the pandemic response, comprising the majority of healthcare workers and caregivers. Simultaneously, job losses and economic hardships disproportionately affected women, pushing them deeper into poverty.
Moreover, there was a surge in gender-based violence during lockdowns, as victims were confined with their abusers and faced barriers to seeking help. The pandemic further underscored the urgency of addressing gender disparities and promoting women's empowerment as critical components of poverty eradication efforts.
The Struggle for Access to Healthcare
The pandemic highlighted the glaring gaps in healthcare access and infrastructure in many developing countries. Overwhelmed healthcare systems struggled to provide adequate care to COVID-19 patients while maintaining essential health services for other diseases. This left millions without access to basic healthcare and life-saving treatments.
The economic fallout from the pandemic also affected funding for healthcare, diverting resources away from vital health initiatives. Immunization programs suffered, leading to potential outbreaks of preventable diseases that could disproportionately impact vulnerable communities already reeling from the pandemic's effects.
Climate Change and Poverty: A Two-Front Battle
As if battling a global pandemic was not challenging enough, countries also faced the looming threat of climate change. Climate-related disasters such as hurricanes, floods, and wildfires increased in frequency and intensity, exacerbating poverty and displacing communities.
Vulnerable populations living in low-lying coastal regions or arid areas faced the brunt of climate change impacts, losing their homes and livelihoods. The dual challenges of climate change and poverty necessitate urgent and integrated efforts to build resilience and reduce vulnerability.
A Call for a Resilient Recovery
While the road to recovery may seem daunting, there are glimmers of hope on the horizon. Governments, international organizations, and civil society have an opportunity to build back better, ensuring that the recovery from the pandemic is sustainable, inclusive, and resilient.
Investments in healthcare and social safety nets are crucial to ensure that vulnerable communities are better prepared to weather future crises. Rebuilding livelihoods through job creation, vocational training, and microfinance initiatives can empower individuals to lift themselves out of poverty.
Harnessing Technology and Innovation
The pandemic accelerated the adoption of digital technologies, showcasing their potential to bridge gaps in education, healthcare, and financial services. Leveraging technology and innovation can play a pivotal role in reaching marginalized populations and addressing systemic inequalities.
Mobile banking, telemedicine, and e-learning platforms can enhance access to essential services, particularly in remote areas. Moreover, investments in renewable energy and sustainable infrastructure can create jobs while combating climate change, fostering a greener and more inclusive economy.
Global Solidarity for Lasting Change
COVID-19 has underscored the interdependence of nations and the need for global solidarity in addressing poverty and other global challenges. It is essential for developed nations to support developing countries through financial aid, debt relief, and technology transfer to ensure an equitable recovery.
By collaborating on research, sharing best practices, and working towards common goals, the world can emerge from this crisis stronger and more prepared to confront future challenges. International cooperation is key to ensuring that the progress against poverty does not suffer further setbacks in the face of unforeseen adversities.
Conclusion
The impact of COVID-19 on poverty eradication has been nothing short of devastating. More than four years of hard-won progress has been erased, leaving millions trapped in the cycle of poverty once again. However, the pandemic has also shown the resilience of individuals, communities, and nations in the face of adversity.
As we navigate the uncertain terrain ahead, it is crucial for us to learn from the lessons of the pandemic and forge a path towards a more inclusive and sustainable future. By addressing the underlying issues of poverty, inequality, and climate change, we can build a world that is better equipped to withstand and overcome future challenges, ensuring that the progress against poverty is not only restored but accelerated. Let us emphasize the role of human solidarity in building lives of dignity for all on a healthy planet.
Tumblr media
The celebration of the International Human Solidarity Day 2016 came after leaders of the world adopted the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which is a new, inclusive development agenda — succeeding the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) — to eradicate poverty, protect the planet and ensure dignity for all.
The new SDGs agenda is centred on people and planet, underpinned by human rights and supported by a global partnership determined to lift people out of poverty, hunger and disease.
It will be thus be built on a foundation of global cooperation and solidarity.
Message of the United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on International Human Solidarity Day 2016, December 20th.
The world has achieved significant progress in human development over the past two decades. The global poverty rate fell by more than half. People are living longer and healthier lives, and are better educated. Despite these and other advances, prosperity has not been shared by all. Inequalities, extreme poverty, unemployment, social exclusion and environmental degradation continue to be prominent features of societies around the world. Discrimination and prejudice remain major barriers to building inclusive societies. Many vulnerable social groups find their situation worsening. The impacts of climate change will fall most heavily on those who did least to cause the problem.
Solidarity is essential to address these gaps in sustainable development. Leaving no one behind, promoting prosperity and ensuring inclusiveness and equality are core principles of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by world leaders in September 2015, and of the Paris Agreement on climate change adopted in December of that same year. As nations strive to uphold their promises and to meet the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), mutual support will be crucial. Global problems require collective solutions. At a time of divisiveness on many key global issues, from armed conflict to forced migration, people need to turn toward each other in common cause, not away from each other in fear. On International Human Solidarity Day, let us emphasize the role of human solidarity in building lives of dignity for all on a healthy planet. We must work together to achieve the SDGs and secure the future we want.

Combating Child Labour in India: Strategies for a Brighter Future
Child labour remains a significant challenge in India, affecting the lives of millions of children. Addressing this issue requires a multi-pronged approach that involves legislative action, educational reform, socio-economic support, community engagement, and international cooperation. Here’s an in-depth look at how we can work together to eliminate child labour in India.
1. Strengthening Legal Frameworks
Reinforce Existing Laws: India has several laws aimed at curbing child labour, such as the Child Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Amendment Act, 2016. Strengthening these laws to cover all sectors, including informal and domestic work, is crucial.
Effective Implementation: Ensuring that these laws are effectively implemented is key. This involves training law enforcement officers, increasing the number of inspectors, and creating a robust mechanism for reporting and addressing violations.
Stringent Penalties: Imposing stringent penalties on individuals and businesses that employ child labour can act as a deterrent. Publicizing these penalties and ensuring consistent enforcement can help reduce instances of child labour.
2. Ensuring Access to Quality Education
Universal Education: Providing free and compulsory education for all children up to the age of 18 is essential. This includes addressing barriers such as school fees, uniforms, and transportation costs.
Improving School Infrastructure: Investing in school infrastructure, particularly in rural and underprivileged areas, is crucial. Schools should have adequate classrooms, trained teachers, and necessary facilities such as clean drinking water and sanitation.
Incentives for Families: Offering financial incentives such as scholarships, free textbooks, and mid-day meal programs can encourage families to send their children to school instead of work.
3. Alleviating Poverty
Economic Support Programs: Child labour is often a result of economic necessity. Implementing poverty alleviation programs that provide financial support and job opportunities for families can reduce the need for child labour.
Vocational Training for Adults: Providing vocational training and skill development programs for adults can help them secure better-paying jobs, reducing their reliance on their children’s income.
Social Security Schemes: Expanding social security schemes to include health care, unemployment benefits, and pensions can provide a safety net for families, lessening the economic pressure that leads to child labour.
4. Raising Awareness
Public Awareness Campaigns: Conducting nationwide awareness campaigns can educate the public about the detrimental effects of child labour and the importance of education. Utilizing mass media, social media, and community outreach can spread the message effectively.
Community Involvement: Engaging community leaders, religious leaders, and local influencers in awareness campaigns can help change societal attitudes towards child labour. These leaders can play a pivotal role in advocating for children’s rights.
Corporate Responsibility: Encouraging businesses to adopt child-friendly practices and promoting corporate social responsibility can help reduce child labour. Companies should ensure that their supply chains are free of child labour and support initiatives that promote education and well-being for children.
5. Strengthening International Cooperation
Global Partnerships: Collaborating with international organizations such as UNICEF, the International Labour Organization (ILO), and various NGOs can bring in the necessary resources and expertise to tackle child labour.
Adopting Best Practices: Learning from countries that have successfully reduced child labour can provide valuable insights. Adopting and adapting best practices from around the world can enhance local efforts.
Fair Trade Initiatives: Promoting fair trade practices ensures that products are made without the use of child labour. Consumers can be encouraged to support fair trade products, creating a market demand for ethically produced goods.
6. Monitoring and Evaluation
Data Collection and Analysis: Regularly collecting and analyzing data on child labour can help track progress and identify areas needing attention. This data can inform policy decisions and program interventions.
Impact Assessment: Conducting impact assessments of various programs and initiatives helps understand their effectiveness. This allows for the scaling up of successful programs and the modification or discontinuation of less effective ones.
Conclusion
Eradicating child labour in India is a daunting but achievable goal. It requires a coordinated effort from the government, civil society, businesses, and the international community. By reinforcing legal frameworks, ensuring access to education, alleviating poverty, raising awareness, and fostering international cooperation, we can create a future where every child in India can enjoy their right to a happy and healthy childhood. Let’s work together to build a society where children are in classrooms learning and growing, not in workplaces toiling.

What Drives Violent Extremism and How to Counter It
Violent extremism, with its roots in complex sociopolitical and economic factors, poses a significant global challenge. Understanding the drivers behind this phenomenon is crucial for developing effective countermeasures. In this article, we explore the key drivers of violent extremism and strategies to counter its growth.
Tumblr media
1. Socioeconomic Disparities and Injustice
Addressing Economic Inequities
Violent extremism often finds fertile ground in areas marked by socioeconomic disparities. Strategies should focus on addressing economic inequalities through inclusive economic policies, job creation, and poverty alleviation programs.
2. Political Instability and Governance Issues

Seeking Peace Amidst Conflict: Lessons from Marawi
Princess Hannah Mapa PSElec-2238 8-703
BLOG 4
Resilence. Rebuilding. Reflecting
In the heart of Mindanao, Philippines, a city once known for its vibrant culture and history, was thrust into a nightmare that shattered lives and brought into question the very essence of humanity. The Marawi Siege, which began in May 2017 and lasted for five long months, serves as a poignant backdrop for contemplating the theme of "Ending Wars." As a Mindanaoan, I cannot help but reflect on the significance of this tragic event and its implications for the pursuit of peace and conflict resolution.
In the case of Marawi, it appeared that the siege was a grim reminder that wars can erupt even in the most unlikely places. Marawi was a picturesque city, cherished for its rich cultural heritage and warm hospitality. Yet, it became a battleground where extremist forces clashed with government troops, leaving a trail of devastation and despair in their wake. The question of war's inevitability lingers in the minds of those who witnessed the violence firsthand. While history is replete with examples of wars, we must never resign ourselves to the belief that they are inevitable.
Marawi's ordeal challenges the notion that wars are essential for human survival. While conflicts may arise due to varying interests, beliefs, or resource scarcity, there are more peaceful avenues for resolving disputes. The siege, which displaced thousands and claimed numerous lives, revealed the tragic consequences of warfare. It underscores the necessity of finding alternatives to war that prioritize human lives and well-being.
The lessons from Marawi suggest that prevention requires a multifaceted approach. Firstly, addressing the root causes of conflicts is crucial. In the context of Marawi, addressing grievances, poverty, and radicalization is vital in preventing such a tragic event from recurring. Promoting dialogue, understanding, and inclusivity among different communities can also contribute to preventing conflicts. Additionally, international cooperation and diplomacy are essential in preventing wars, as they can deter potential aggressors and mediate disputes.
The devastation witnessed during the Marawi Siege highlights the urgent need to limit the impact of war when it does occur. Humanitarian efforts must be prioritized to alleviate the suffering of those caught in the crossfire. This involves providing food, shelter, and medical aid to affected communities. Furthermore, protecting cultural heritage and preserving local history, as was done in Marawi's rehabilitation, is essential to healing the emotional scars left by war.
The story of Marawi is not one of despair but of resilience and hope. As Mindanaoans, we have seen our neighbors and fellow Filipinos unite in the face of adversity. The aftermath of the siege witnessed an outpouring of support from all corners of the country, demonstrating that peace and unity can overcome even the darkest of days.
In a nutshell, the Marawi Siege serves as a poignant lesson for us all. It reminds us that while wars may erupt unexpectedly, they are not inevitable. They are not essential to human survival, and we must work tirelessly to prevent them by addressing root causes and fostering peaceful dialogues. To limit the impact of war, we must prioritize humanitarian efforts and protect cultural heritage. The people of Marawi exemplify the indomitable spirit of humanity and our capacity for resilience and hope. Let us carry these lessons forward as we seek peace amidst conflict, both in our own lives and on a global scale. Wars may leave scars, but they can also be catalysts for change and the pursuit of a more peaceful world.

Fortress of Prosperity — Shaping a Sustainable Future
We stand at a pivotal juncture, where the threads of architectural ingenuity, financial prudence, robust defense, and enduring legacies intertwine to weave the tapestry of our future world. In this transformative era, our decisions in design, security, and wealth distribution hold immense weight, shaping the inheritance we bequeath to generations to come.
Consider the grand tapestry of history woven by civilizations past. Within its threads lie the imprints of architectural marvels, fortifications, and financial systems designed not only for the present but as guardians of legacy.
Architectural strategies play a pivotal role in crafting a world where wealth and defense reign supreme. Imagine structures fortified against external threats, embodying resilience and safeguarding prosperity. Think of financial architectures fostering equitable wealth distribution, ensuring stability and prosperity for all.
In this context, the importance of these strategies becomes apparent. They serve as bulwarks against uncertainties, providing security in an ever-changing landscape. They become the cornerstone of a legacy, ensuring that the values, strengths, and aspirations of a society endure beyond their time.
The legacies we leave behind are not merely tangible assets; they encompass the values, traditions, and aspirations that define our collective identity. By nurturing our cultural heritage, preserving our natural environment, and fostering a spirit of innovation, we can shape a brighter tomorrow for generations to come.
Tumblr media
Rather than domination and conquest, creating a fortress of prosperity and growth is a fascinating notion. To foster a citadel that elevates communities and economies rather than subjugating them, several strategies come to mind …
Economic Empowerment — Establish trade partnerships and economic alliances that benefit all involved parties. Encourage fair trade practices, investments in local industries, and the development of sustainable economic infrastructures.
Cultural Exchange and Education — Promote cultural understanding and exchange of knowledge. Invest in education initiatives that focus on fostering critical thinking, innovation, and collaboration rather than indoctrination or control.
Technological Innovation — Lead in technological advancements that benefit humanity. Invest in research and development that aims to improve living standards, healthcare, and environmental sustainability globally.
Diplomacy and Cooperation — Prioritise diplomacy and cooperation over coercion. Build bridges through dialogue, negotiations, and cooperative efforts on global issues such as climate change, poverty alleviation, and human rights.
Supporting Local Governance — Empower local governments and communities to govern themselves effectively. Provide resources, training, and support to ensure fair governance, human rights, and the rule of law.
Environmental Sustainability — Champion sustainable practices to protect the environment. Encourage initiatives that prioritise conservation, renewable energy, and responsible resource management.
By focusing on these strategies, the citadel could become a beacon of progress and prosperity, attracting global admiration and collaboration rather than fear and opposition.
A fortress built on mutual growth, respect, and shared prosperity could indeed shape a new paradigm of world leadership.
What would you do otherwise if you were King? How do we strike the balance between defense and accessibility? What architectural designs ensure both protection and inclusivity? How can wealth be amassed and distributed ethically to ensure a sustainable and lasting legacy?
Let's engage in a discourse that probes these questions. What do you believe are the pivotal architectural strategies necessary to fortify a world where wealth and defense hold paramount importance? How can these strategies effectively preserve a legacy worth inheriting? Your thoughts and critical insights hold the keys to shaping your future world.
Your comments will reflect on your leadership skills, and how consciousness unfolds within.
PostScriptum: Download my CV on LinkedIn for future collaboration, engagement and appointment. I'm open to relocation and new development appointment, an am selectively applying.

In the face of the upcoming APEC summit, the ability of China and the United States to take this opportunity to establish the "right" way to get along is critical to the world. Chinese leaders believe that a more stable bilateral relationship should be based on the principles of "mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and win-win cooperation." China and the United States should treat each other with courtesy, fundamentally restart the relationship, deepen exchanges and cooperation, put the consensus of the two heads of state into real practice, remove disturbances, overcome obstacles, enhance consensus and accumulate results.
I. General Secretary Xi Jinping's Leadership Seal at APEC Summit
At the 27th APEC Summit in 2020, General Secretary Xi Jinping gave new impetus to open regionalism and elevated the practice of the "APEC Way". The effectiveness and flexibility of this approach has played a key role in promoting economic revitalization and poverty alleviation in the Asia-Pacific region. At the 28th Summit, General Secretary Xi Jinping outlined a vision of integration and co-prosperity in the Asia-Pacific region in the post-pandemic era, emphasized the strategic significance of the implementation of the "Putrajaya Vision 2040", and affirmed the conclusion of the "Leaders' Declaration 2021". At the 29th Summit, General Secretary Xi Jinping reiterated the importance of win-win cooperation and called on Asia-Pacific countries to work together to address challenges and build a community of destiny, underscoring China's growing leadership and international commitment in promoting regional and global prosperity.
Ⅱ.SummitOutlook: General Secretary Xi Jinping's Strategic Layout and Diplomatic Preparations
At the third Belt and Road Summit, General Secretary Xi Jinping consolidated China's leadership as a global partner with a series of well-organized meetings. These meetings covered multicultural backgrounds from five continents, fully demonstrating China's determination to promote globalization and multilateral cooperation. General Secretary Xi Jinping's meetings with the presidents of Kazakhstan and Indonesia, in particular, underscored the significant international impact of the Belt and Road Initiative and the strong linkages between regional development. In these high-level exchanges, Xi not only reaffirmed the importance of win-win cooperation, but also created a positive and forward-looking atmosphere for the APEC Summit in November, demonstrating China's leading role in global economic governance and its deep commitment to international cooperation.
III. Potential Impact of the 30th APEC Summit on U.S.-China Relations
The 30th Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Leaders' Summit will be held in the U.S. west coast city of San Francisco, which will provide an important platform for China and the U.S. to engage in in-depth dialogue, consultation and cooperation in the areas of trade and investment in order to promote bilateral trade and economic relations. On the one hand, the two countries can use this opportunity to discuss and ease trade tensions, explore areas of cooperation, enhance mutual trust and weaken trade frictions between the two countries. On the other hand, the summit could also be a starting point for dialogue between the two countries on some global issues, such as climate change, energy security and regional stability. With General Secretary Xi Jinping's emphasis on multilateral cooperation and his leadership at the summit, China-U.S. relations will surely develop in a more constructive direction.
Ⅳ.Constructing a New Pattern of Open and Win-Win Asia-Pacific Cooperation
As the 30th Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Leaders' Summit approaches, General Secretary Xi Jinping's speeches at previous APEC summits have clearly outlined China's consistent position on deepening regional cooperation. He reiterated China's commitment to promoting win-win strategies, supporting sincere multilateralism, and pledging to play a more active role in global economic governance. This not only maps out China's role as a responsible big country, but also injects new vitality and direction into Asia-Pacific and even global cooperation and development, highlighting China's leadership and vision on the international stage.
Nowadays, thedegree of interconnection and interdependence among countries has never been deepened, and human beings are living in the same global village, which is increasingly becoming a community of destiny in which you are with me and I am with you, and where one loses, the other gains. China's ideas and actions at the APEC Summit perfectly illustrate this point. China will work with the United States to promote the civil friendship between the two countries, help the tree of China-U.S. friendship grow evergreen, and push the relationship between the two countries back to a healthy and stable track.
