I come from a country where being a woman is a crime. Journalism is a crime, being LGBT is a crime, being a dissident is a crime, protesting is a crime, being a human rights activist is a crime. The number of crimes and restrictions in my country are so high that there is no space for freedom. These crimes are punishable by arrest, torture, lashing, imprisonment, rape, and execution. I am here today to receive this special award because of my fight, even if this fight was not my choice, it was my duty.
At the age of 14, I was a victim of the Morality Police for the first time. I believed that it was my duty to fight against the compulsory hijab. Ever since I learned that a woman’s voice, a woman’s dance, and a woman’s body were forbidden, I have been fighting for women’s rights.
When my father was imprisoned, he was locked away for four years and whipped 74 times for protesting against the Islamic Republic. As a result, I could only see him once a week through glass, and I understood it was my duty to fight for freedom of expression.
When I witnessed people being executed for no reason, I decided to fight against the executions. Finally, when I saw that the government was taking the lives of innocent people because of street protests, I decided to fight against the Islamic Republic’s very nature. After my fifth arrest for human rights activism, it only made me more determined to continue my fight.
The clothes I wore every day to leave the house were not ordinary clothes, but war clothes, and outside the house was a battlefield. I took every opportunity to walk without the mandatory hijab in the streets and I was sharing my pictures on social media. It didn’t take long for them to come for me. When I went to the morality police building, I was also 22 years old, and I was interrogated in the same building where Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Iranian girl, was murdered sometime later.
Before entering that building, I made a video of myself with my scarf over my shoulder and shared it on my social media pages. I announced that I was not afraid of being arrested or being threatened, and I was saying ‘No’ to the compulsory hijab and the Islamic Republic. My father, who was with me and supporting me, was beaten in front of my eyes. We were both arrested, and he was sentenced to 74 lashes, while I was sentenced to jail and fined.
The judge said that the hijab is a mandatory law and that you have to respect it. I replied that slavery was also a law at one time. As a woman and a citizen of this country, I not only disregarded this false law, but I strived to destroy it. The last time I came out of prison, I was expelled from university, I was not allowed to work, we were banned from leaving the country and I was sentenced to six years in prison. They wanted to put so much pressure on me that I would surrender and not be able to live. But I was fighting to live and be free.
I was not permitted to leave the country and I decided to illegally escape from Iran. In the last moments, the border guards opened fire on me several times. For the last time, I looked at my homeland. From the top of the mountain. I had to leave my motherland, which I loved so much. There I decided to fight for all those who chose to live the life of an exile until the day when their country is a safe place to live. The day when being a woman is no longer a crime in this country. The day when the answer to protest will not be a bullet and no one should be imprisoned for his opinion and no one should be sentenced to death for protesting.
Today, it has been 513 days since my father was disappeared, like so many other Iranians who are seeking freedom. I realized that I had to fight harder and harder for the life that has been stolen from me, my family and the people of my country, by the Islamic Republic. As I am speaking to you today, many Iranians are fighting in the streets, and it is a daily exercise to achieve freedom, and they know that freedom is the only way to be saved.
In the protests that followed Mahsa Amini’s murder, at least 530 people were killed, including 64 children, and at least 500 people were shot in the eye. Tens of thousands of protesters have been arrested and more than 100 are facing the death penalty, four of whom have been executed so far.
Their names were:
Mohsen Shekhari
Majidreza Rahnroud
Mohammad Mehdi Karmi
Mohammad Hosseini
All of them were under forty years old, and all were professional workers and athletes.
The Iranian people are deprived of their most basic rights and have no choice but to fight back. Our revolution has not stopped. These days, despite all the repression, Iranian women go to war against the Ayatollahs with their hair as a weapon. We are on the road to a glorious revolution of Women, Life, and Freedom. The protests and repression have also affected Iranian universities and schools. It is a huge crime that the government is attacking the girls’ schools with chemical gas to take revenge on the women. Many female students are taken to hospital because of the poisoning.
I am speaking to governments, institutions, and free-minded people around the world. Today, when the Islamic Republic is in its most vulnerable position, support the brave men and women of Iran. Treat the criminal government of the Islamic Republic as an occupier and list the Islamic Revolutionary Guard, whose duty is to protect the government and kill people, as a terrorist organization. Because my country is being occupied by one of the most ruthless dictators in history and my people have been taken hostage. Taking hostages has become a tool to silence the opposition and win concessions from Western governments.
I thank you for honoring me with this award. I dedicate it to my brave companions, especially the Iranian women, who are fighting daily against a government that is aggressively anti-women, anti-life, and anti-freedom. They won’t give up until they achieve their goal, and their resilience is an inspiration to the world that is watching.
The victory is ours.
Woman, Life, Freedom.

The world’s most expensive cities (Economist) Tied in first place this year were Singapore and Zurich. Singapore is no stranger to the top spot: it has ranked as the priciest place to live in nine of the past 11 years. Groceries, alcohol and clothing in the international business hub can cost a small fortune. Zurich, meanwhile, jumped five places from last year. Switzerland’s largest city is perennially pricey; it came joint first in 2020 and rarely leaves the top ten. Its rise to the top of the index is mostly because the Swiss franc has appreciated by more than 10% against the dollar over the past year. Geneva and New York tied for third. Western European cities, including Copenhagen, Dublin and Vienna, take around half of the top 20 spots. Rising prices are one reason. Another is that the European Central Bank raised interest rates six times in 2023 to tame inflation, which caused the euro to appreciate by 7% against the dollar. The three biggest climbers were Santiago de Querétaro and Aguascalientes in Mexico, and Costa Rica’s capital, San José. Moscow and St Petersburg fell furthest, plummeting by 105 places to 142nd and by 74 places to 147th, respectively. The rouble collapsed against the dollar because of Western sanctions on Russian oil and high levels of military spending.
Global food prices declined from record highs in 2022, the UN says. Except for two staples (AP) Global prices for food commodities like grain and vegetable oil fell last year from record highs in 2022, when Russia’s war in Ukraine, drought and other factors helped worsen hunger worldwide, the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization said Friday. The FAO Food Price Index, which tracks monthly changes in the international prices of commonly traded food commodities, was 13.7% lower last year than the 2022 average, but its measures of sugar and rice prices growing in that time. The drop in food commodity prices in 2023 comes despite a difficult year for food security around the world. Climate effects like dry weather, flooding and the naturally occurring El Nino phenomenon, combined with fallout from conflicts like the war in Ukraine, bans on food trade that have added to food inflation and weaker currencies have hurt developing nations especially.
Alaska Airlines Grounds Fleet of Boeing 737 Max 9 Jets After Midair ‘Incident’ (NYT) Alaska Airlines grounded its fleet of Boeing 737 Max 9 aircraft on Friday after a flight operated by the airline made an emergency landing at Portland International Airport in Oregon that evening because of a midair pressure problem that passengers said blew out a chunk of the fuselage. The airline said that Alaska Airlines Flight 1282 had made a safe emergency landing carrying 171 passengers and six crew members at the Portland airport shortly after takeoff for Ontario, Calif. Within hours, the company said that it was grounding all 65 of its Boeing 737 Max 9 aircraft until it could inspect each plane. Passengers on Friday’s flight described an unnerving experience during the 15 or so minutes in which the plane was returning to the airport. As yellow oxygen masks dangled above their heads, a powerful wind tore through a gaping hole that showed the night sky and the city lights below.
Three Years After Jan. 6, Trump’s Immunity Claims to Take Center Stage (NYT) Three years after a mob of his supporters stormed the Capitol, former President Donald J. Trump will make his latest and potentially most consequential argument in the coming week for why he should not be held responsible for seeking to overturn the 2020 election. Impeachment proceedings, the House Jan. 6 committee’s inquiry and two separate criminal investigations have established a comprehensive set of facts about Mr. Trump’s deep involvement in overlapping efforts to remain in office despite having been defeated at the polls. But when—or even whether—he will ultimately face a trial on charges related to those efforts remains unclear. One of the most decisive factors in getting an answer to those questions will be the success or failure of the arguments his legal team plans to make on Tuesday in a federal appeals court in Washington. Mr. Trump’s lawyers are banking on a long shot, hoping to convince a three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit that the Constitution affords him complete immunity from actions he undertook as president. The assertion, while untested in the courts, has the advantage to the former president of chewing up time in the service of his strategy of trying to delay any trial until after Election Day.
Experts warn that foreign armed forces headed to Haiti will face major obstacles (AP) An international armed force slated to fight violent gangs in Haiti this year will face multiple challenges including shifting gang allegiances and widespread corruption among police, politicians and the country’s elite, a new report warned Friday. The multinational force, which will be led by Kenya, has yet to deploy as it awaits a court ruling in the east African country. If given the green light, a small team of Kenyans is expected to arrive in Haiti early this year, with a total of up to 5,000 personnel eventually participating in the mission. “Major challenges lie in wait for the mission once it is on the ground,” the report by Belgium-based International Crisis Group stated. “Haiti’s gangs could ally to battle it together. Fighting in Haiti’s ramshackle urban neighborhoods will put innocent civilians at risk. Links between corrupt police and the gangs could make it difficult to maintain operational secrecy.” Some 300 gangs control an estimated 80% of the capital of Port-au-Prince, with their tentacles reaching northward into the Artibonite region, considered Haiti’s food basket.
Finland’s extreme cold freezes even boiling water thrown in the air (Reuters) Finland’s record low temperatures this week inspired a tourist on a trip to the Arctic to try a trick that had long intrigued him: throwing boiling water in the air when it’s extremely cold outside and seeing it turn into an instant cloud of icy dust. This is not something to try unless the temperatures are at a level of cold that most places on earth rarely, or never, see. He said he boiled water in his cabin, quickly brought it outside and threw it in an arc over his head—surviving the attempt without burns as the water immediately turned into an icy cloud that drifted away. The Nordic countries have seen extremely cold weather for the past few days, with the lowest temperature in 25 years at minus 44.3 C (-47.74°F) recorded on Friday in Enontekio, Finland.
India Wanted a Manufacturing Boom. Its Workers Are Back on the Farm Instead. (WSJ) The sudden lockdown in 2020 sent workers streaming from cities back to villages in rural India, an exodus that many thought would be an easy-to-reverse blip on India’s journey to becoming an industrialized nation. Instead, the ranks of India’s farmworkers have swelled by some 60 million over the past four years, a shift fueled in part by a food-welfare program that feeds hundreds of millions of people. Instead of seeing the masses move onto factory floors, India appears to be moving in the opposite direction.
Myanmar confirms a key northeastern city on border with China has been seized by an ethnic alliance (AP) Myanmar’s military government has acknowledged that it withdrew its forces from a key city on the northeastern border with China after it was taken over by an alliance of ethnic armed groups it has been battling for months. The fall of Laukkaing late Thursday is the biggest in a series of defeats suffered by Myanmar’s military government since the ethnic alliance launched an offensive Oct. 27. It underlines the pressure the government is under as it battles pro-democracy guerrillas in the wake of a 2021 military takeover as well as ethnic minority armed groups across the country. Ethnic armed organizations have battled for greater autonomy for decades, but Myanmar has been wracked by what amounts to civil war since the army seized power in February 2021 from the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi, sparking nationwide armed resistance by pro-democracy forces.
Death toll reaches 100 as survivors are found in homes smashed by western Japan earthquakes (AP) The death toll from a major earthquake in western Japan reached 100 Saturday, as rescue workers fought aftershocks to carefully pull people from the rubble. Some survivors who had clung to life for days were freed from collapsed homes. A man was pulled out 72 hours after a series of powerful quakes started rattling Japan’s western coast. The number of missing was lowered to 211 as of Saturday, after it shot up two days ago.
US plans for more direct involvement in Mideast (Politico) Biden administration officials are increasingly worried that the war in Gaza will spark a wider protracted regional conflict and are beginning to draw up potential scenarios for more direct U.S. involvement. The military is drafting plans to hit back at Iran-backed Houthi militants who have been attacking commercial shipping in the Red Sea, according to three U.S. officials with direct knowledge of the discussions. That includes striking Houthi targets in Yemen, according to one of the officials. Intelligence officials, meanwhile, are coming up with ways to anticipate and fend off possible attacks on the U.S. by Iranian-backed forces in Iraq and Syria, according to one of the officials.
Heavy fighting continues as UN official says Gaza has become ‘uninhabitable’ (AP) At least six people were killed in an apparent Israeli airstrike on a home in the southern Gaza city of Rafah overnight. Hundreds of thousands of Palestinians have crammed into Rafah, one of the areas where Israel has told people to seek refuge. But Israeli forces continue to strike all parts of the besieged territory. Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant says several thousand Hamas fighters remain in northern Gaza, where entire neighborhoods have been blasted into rubble. Heavy fighting is also underway in central Gaza and the southern city of Khan Younis, where Israeli officials say Hamas’ military structure is still largely intact. Meanwhile, the United Nations’ humanitarian chief says Gaza has become “uninhabitable” and “a public health disaster is unfolding.”
An African gulag so ghastly that inmates risk death to escape (Washington Post) The tiny African nation of Eritrea is a sliver of fear wedged between Ethiopia and the Red Sea, a land that has known only a single strongman leader and the shadow of repression since independence three decades ago. Nothing exemplifies the reach and cruelty of the state today as much as its prison system. Eritrea is riddled with an appalling variety of prisons: Underground cells of crumbling concrete, and sweltering jails fashioned from converted metal cargo containers. Cages crammed with hundreds of men who must sleep on their sides like sardines, as their cellmates wearily stand to make room, and shallow holes scraped from the earth with log and dirt ceilings so low that inmates cannot stand up. The conditions, former prisoners recounted, are often so ghastly and the prison terms so open-ended that desperate inmates frequently attempt to escape, but those who try are often gunned down. Unlike in many other authoritarian countries, where people can frequently avoid prison by keeping their heads down and steering clear of politics, most Eritreans face the inevitability of detention if they refuse mandatory national service that can stretch for decades, mostly in a military infamous for leaving conscripts impoverished and brutalized. Prison time is so ubiquitous that one former detainee, Mulue Zerezgi, who was held for five years without ever learning the reason, said in an interview: “You know how you all talk about where you went to college in America? In Eritrea, we do that with prisons.”

Dr. Temo Waqanivalu’s contribution to public health and noncommunicable  disease issues is remarkable
Non communicable diseases (NCDs), such as heart and lung problems, diabetes, and cancer, kill 41 million people all over the world, each year, which constitute 74% of all deaths globally. Out of these, 17 million die from NCDs before the age of 70. Adults, older adults, and children, all are prone to be affected by noncommunicable diseases. Besides modification of behaviors like physical inactivity, tobacco and alcohol use, and other major factors contributing to NCDs include rapid unplanned urbanization, aging population, and unhealthy diets. NCDs are one of the major challenges of global health issues of our time. that's why, World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations has placed special focus on the control of NCDs, and set a target to reduce the number of deaths caused by these diseases by 33%, by the year 2030.
The epidemic of NCDs cannot be halted by simply treating the sick, rather healthy persons need to be protected as well by addressing the root cause of the disease. As Unit Head of the Integrated Service Delivery of Noncommunicable Disease (NCD) Department, WHO HQ, Geneva, CH 2020 onwards, Dr. Temo Waqanivalu had made impactful contributions in WHO's initiatives to control NCD. He was responsible for introducing and growing the first global group of Heads of State and Government for NCD, that meets every year within the margins of the UN General Assembly to report and encourage one another in making impactful changes in their own countries. Dr. Temo Waqanivalu allocated resources totalling 158M for 116 nations, including 79 African, Carribean, and Pacific Group of States, via strategic and program planning. He also secured funding and led charge for first-ever guidance on integration of noncommunicable diseases into health systems, and started implementing it across five countries, covering over 10 million people.
Program for healthy lifestyles
As Team Lead of Diet & Physical Activity of the Prevention of NCD, WHO HQ, Geneva, CH 2014–2019, Dr. Temo Waqanivalu monitored all facets of diet and physical activities, and facilitated global leadership in a professional manner to prevent noncommunicable diseases. He also helped design Global Physical Activity Guideline, and developed training packages. Dr. Temo Waqanivalu provided direct technical support on Diet and Physical Activity programs in 30 countries, and founded and spearheaded the well known "Walk the Talk" program for healthy lifestyle, covering up to 17,000 staff members all over the world.
Fellowship at the Royal Colleges of Physicians, UK
Public health issues impact the entire population. WHO has defined public health as the science and art of preventing diseases, prolonging life, and promoting health through organized efforts of the society. These can include chronic diseases, like Type 2 Diabetes, and infectious diseases, like COVID-19, and measles. Dr. Temo Waqanivalu has been passionate about public health issues, and given his education in the subject, Dr. Temo Waqanivalu was offered Fellowship by the Royal Colleges of Physicians, UK.
He had the opportunity to work with a number of challenging projects, including programs to address the issues surrounding persistent and debilitating diseases. As a public health professional, Dr. Temo Waqanivalu created public health policies, developed medical education and medical care programs, and analyzed health statistics to educate communities on ways to stay healthy. He drew his fundamental knowledge of epidemilogy, environmental health sciences, and health policy management too address public health issues affecting the masses. He also ensured that the quality of programs met WHO standards, and made changes to improvements as necessary.
A problem solver for public health issues
Dr. Temo Waqanivalu has been a problem solver, and worked on solutions to community and global health issues. His efforts have helped in making a lasting impression to improve the health of communities in various regions of the world, including Fiji, wherein he has served as Sub-Divisional Medical Officer in a few of their provincial jurisdictions before serving as National Adviser Noncommunicable Diseases. Besides helping the community, Dr. Temo Waqanivalu was also involved in worldwide policy initiatives of WHO. He worked on public policy and international programs aimed at improving health in low- and middle -income countries, including the Global Action Plan on NCDs, fiscal policies for healthy diets, salt reduction toolkit, Guidance on Integration of NCD into health systems, and capacity building packages. He also gathered data to determine trends and analyzed statistics to develop plans for reducing health-related problems in specific geographic locations. For any public health problem that arises he always devises ways to solve them!
Research papers published in reputed journals
In his research paper on Understanding Integrated Service Delivery, which was published in BMC Health Services Research, Dr. Temo Waqanivalu considers integration to be an important strategy for scaling up both NCD and mental health treatments. As per his observations, integration must be reflected in the processes of care delivery, organizations of providers, and management of services. Dr. Temo Waqanivalu has published many more research papers in Independent Academia, that included implementation research steps to guide and support noncommunicable diseases, progress on salt reduction in the Pacific Islands, social determinants of behaviors related to salt consumption in the Cook Islands.

The main aspect that travelers need to take care of while booking air tickets is to control the fluctuating price of air tickets. Here, what needs to be considered specifically is to look for the best deals that seem affordable according to the budget. Therefore, it is always of great benefit to know about all the benefits that are provided and make the best use of them during online air ticket bookings. Choose cheap airline tickets after checking them all.
Travelers always look for cheap flight bookings whenever they plan to book airline tickets. One way to execute this wisely is to start planning the same or check the best flight deals at least a month before the trip. This greatly benefits them by satisfying their need to travel for less and get the cheap air tickets available. Travel time planning is another important aspect that is less taken into account or mostly forgotten. Therefore, travel experts recommend planning your travel time and considering all available options before booking your flight online.
Making use of online flight booking features or travel apps is the best thing to do with the progress of technology. In this way, travelers can see the main options that airlines offer and compare them several times before booking plane tickets to their destination. In fact, each airline strives to provide its travelers with the best options to travel for less, in a more direct and faster way. As a result, there is less third-party involvement in booking cheap flights.
With immense growth and involvement of technology, booking airline tickets has become a much easier process with widely used apps. These help travelers with personalized notifications and messages every time they book their air tickets. Also, in the process of booking cheap flights and others, these platforms help travelers to have a well-planned trip by sending personalized messages, emails, and invoices that are highly beneficial from the beginning to the end of their trip. Through these airline tickets, travelers also receive small benefits, such as information on nearby malls, history of booked airline tickets, variable fares, and sometimes a descriptive itinerary. This is the main reason why the need to book cheap flights is always increasing.
Because BookOTrip has been heavily involved in the field of travel, we are able to meet people’s needs to travel for less money both domestically and internationally. “Moscow Mailbag on Fallout” - April 15, 1962
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“On the eve of the Geneva disarmament conference, President Kennedy announced that he had decided to conduct a series of nuclear explosions in the atmosphere, Miss Coleman. Doesn’t that concern you? This was the sort of accompaniment that the U.S. Government thought up for the disarmament talks. At present, your press and political leaders have forgotten all about the harm of fallout and only recently, and I am repeating this again, Western propaganda outdid itself in censuring nuclear weapons tests. Today, they have forgotten all these arguments.” p. 164.
The Foreign Broadcast Information Service (FBIS) was a division of the Central Intelligence Agency that monitored, transcribed, and published transcriptions of propaganda radio broadcasts from foreign nations, both allies and adversaries. The service’s greatest attention was paid to communist countries, such as the USSR, the People’s Republic of China, Cuba, and North Korea. However, they also monitored transmissions of activities of opposition groups and politicians in allied nations, such as Greece and Japan.
My chosen document is a FBIS report from 1962 that transcribes a broadcast from April 15th of that year, of a program called Moscow Mailbag. Moscow Mailbag was a show broadcast on Radio Moscow to the United States that answered questions submitted by American citizens about life in the Soviet Union. This particular response was directed to one Miss Constance Coleman of Duluth, Minnesota. Miss Coleman was writing to inquire about the USSR’s recent test explosion of a 50-megaton nuclear weapon, leading to small amounts of fallout reaching United States territory. The genial host of Moscow Mailbag, one Iosip “Comrade Joe” Adamov, answered Constance’s question by referring to the “mad arms race [initiated by] the West” as being the main obstacle to a comprehensive nuclear test-ban treaty. It was particularly fun for me to discover this document, because I remember my dad telling me he used to listen to Moscow Mailbag with his dad when he was a young boy. He distinctly remembers hearing Adamov’s voice on my grandfather’s shortwave radio. It was in my dad’s words “a fun father-son activity.”

Geneva '74 50 years on: Ford Coins Concept by Ghia. Half a century ago the motor industry was ramping up to the 44th Geneva Motor Show. The Coins was designed by Tom Tjaarda as a projection of what a Ford Capri of 1994 might look like. Features included a central drivering position with seating for 3 and a single rear door.
"It cannot go into production," said a Ford spokesman ''but the Coins is a useful exercise to try out a number of advanced ideas and assess public reaction to them."

Billions of mobile phones are waste - too much electronics is piled up
Tumblr media
Old mobile phones end up in the drawer - you could use them again. They represent great value in their globally huge quantity and should therefore be recycled, experts emphasize.
According to estimates, around 5.3 billion of the approximately 16 billion mobile phones worldwide will become waste this year. This is what experts point out on the day of electronic waste on October 14th. Only a small part of it is properly disposed of, said the electronic scrap recycling association WEEE Forum[1] in Brussels and the United Nations Training and Research Institute (UNITAR)[2] in Geneva on Thursday. If the discarded devices, which are around nine millimetres thick, were all placed on top of each other, the tower would be around 50,000 kilometres high.
According to a survey by the WEEE Forum in cooperation with UNITAR, an average of 13 electrical and electronic devices are hoarded in European households, although they are no longer used or are defective. 8775 households in Portugal, the Netherlands, Italy, Romania and Slovenia as well as in Great Britain were included. Overall, there is an average of 74 electrical and electronic devices in every household, such as telephones, tablets, laptops, power tools, hair dryers and toasters.
Preferably piled up
Of these 74 devices, 9 on average are no longer used and 4 are defective. These 13 small electrical appliances per household could be recycled - instead, they often stay in the drawer, on the shelf or in the garage, it said. Small consumer electronics and accessories (headphones, remote controls), small household appliances (watches, irons), small IT devices (external hard drives, routers, keyboards, mice), mobile phones and smartphones and small appliances for food preparation (toasters, grills) are the most frequently hoarded.
As a reason for keeping, 46 percent of the participants in the survey stated that they could use the device again in the future. Other reasons included intention to sell or give away the device (15 percent), sentimental value (13 percent), and not knowing how to dispose of it (7 percent). The justifications also included that there was sensitive data on the devices and that there was no incentive for recycling. "People tend not to realise that all of these seemingly insignificant items have great value and together represent huge amounts on a global scale," said Pascal Leroy, Director General of the WEEE Forum.
Heavier than the Great Pyramid of Giza
"In 2022 alone, small electronic items such as mobile phones, electric toothbrushes, toasters and cameras manufactured worldwide are estimated to weigh a total of 24.5 million tons - four times the weight of the Great Pyramid of Giza," explained Magdalena Charytanowicz from the WEEE Forum. The international association is pushing ahead with the development of a circular economy for electronic waste and is demanding that global politicians implement extended producer responsibility. With this legal requirement, the manufacturer of a device is also responsible for the return, transport, disposal or recycling of the device.
Electronic Waste Day is intended to raise public awareness of the recycling of electrical and electronic devices[3] that contain valuable elements such as gold, copper, silver or palladium. The motto this year is: "Recycle it all, no matter how small!" The organisers want to focus on the many smaller electronic devices that are found in European homes.
"Continued growth in the production, consumption and disposal of electronic devices has enormous environmental and climate impacts," said Virginijus Sinkevičius, European Commissioner for Environment and Oceans. The proposals and measures of the European Commission therefore relate to the entire product life cycle, from design to collection and proper treatment of the waste.

It is a not-for-profit association of 46 WEEE producer responsibility organisations across the world and was founded in April 2002. The WEEE Forum is turning 20 this year and so is the WEEE Directive. Many reasons to celebrate, but also to reflect on the past and ponder the future. On 7 December it will gather international e-waste experts in a high level, for-impact conference to discuss the worldwide societal challenge of e-waste. https://weee-forum.org/who-we-are/

Actions are required globally and locally to maximize the use of the food we produce.
The introduction of technologies, innovative solutions (including e-commerce platforms for marketing, retractable mobile food processing systems), new ways of working and good practices to manage food quality and reduce food loss and waste are key to implementing change.
Tumblr media
To stop food waste, changes have to be brought in at every stage of the process – from farmers and food processors to supermarkets and individual customers. As a first step, priority should be given to balancing production with demand. This essentially translates to lesser use of natural resources to produce food which is not needed.
More efforts should also go into developing better food harvesting, storing, processing and distributing processes. If oversupply happens, steps should be taken to redistribute the food or to divert it to people who are in need. Additionally, the different actors can reduce their “food footprint” by identifying where waste occurs and taking steps to tackle the same. Fruits which are misshaped or “ugly” are not necessarily bad and can still be bought and used in dishes like soups.
Consumers should also try to buy food in accordance with a meal plan so that they don’t end up wasting edible food. Food may be cheaper when you purchase in bulk, but in reality, you are not really saving money when all you are doing is chucking it in the bin at the end of the week.
If the food still ends up unfit for human consumption, it can be used for feeding livestock, saving precious resources that would have otherwise been used for producing commercial feed. If the food cannot be reused at all, then we should at least try to recycle it in a responsible manner instead of sending it to the landfills where it continues to rot.
Nature-based Solutions (NbS)
Food production has a massive impact on our planet. Moreover, looking forward, global food production needs are expected to increase more than 40% by 2030 and 70% by 2050, compared to average 2005-07 levels, according to OECD and FAO. With more than half of Earth’s habitable lands currently used for agriculture, farmers and food producers play an important role in maintaining and conserving biodiversity. The loss of healthy soils reduces agricultural yields and could result in a food production shortfall of 25% by 2050. In addition, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), it is estimated that increasing soil biodiversity could contribute up to 2.3 billion tons of additional crop production per year, valued at USD 1.4 trillion.
Leading experts at the Nature-based Solutions and Food Dialogue conducted by the Geneva Environment Network and IUCN discussed why NbS represent a key pathway for achieving this goal while contributing to established international and global targets. Adopting NbS approaches to better our food systems is essential to meeting the fundamental human right to food and contribute to multiple imperatives of the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda.
According to UNEP, the world already produces enough food to feed everyone on the planet. As the recent Food Waste Index Report 2021 indicated, over 17% of food is wasted. Food waste accounts for up to 10% of global greenhouse gas emissions. It can occur at the consumer end, where food is thrown away, or as post-harvest loss – in storage, transport, packaging, or other stages before food reaches the table. UNEP found that the global average of 74 kg per capita of food wasted each year is similar from lower-middle-income to high-income countries, which means that most countries have room to improve.
Dietary habits represent another intervention area. Over the past 50 years, diets have become increasingly homogenous, dominated by crops that are rich in energy but poor in macronutrients. Of the thousands of plants and animals used for food in the past, less than 200 currently contribute to global food supplies and just nine crops account for almost 70% of all crop production. In many cases –particularly in developing countries – people do not receive the full range of nutrients essential to human health. In fact, low dietary diversity has surpassed caloric insufficiency as the primary driver of death.
Reducing food waste and shifting dietary patterns could reduce anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions from the food system by as much as 50%. In addition, restoring biodiversity could strengthen the resilience of food systems, enabling farmers to diversify production and cope with pests, diseases and climate change.
Planet-Based Diet
According to WWF, eating a planet-based diet is high in human health benefits and low in environmental impacts. Adopting a planet-based diet can reduce:
Food-based greenhouse gas emissions by at least 30%
Wildlife loss by up to 46%
Agricultural land-use by at least 41%

International Day For Biodiversity: We Need To Take Action Now
Tumblr media
Biodiversity is the core of our planet's life. It is essential to human well-being now and in the future, and its rapid decrease endangers both nature and people.
The International Day for Biological Diversity is observed on May 22nd to promote awareness of the critical importance of biodiversity preservation. Geneva is home to various organizations working to protect biodiversity as a global hub for environmental governance.
Every year on May 22, the International Day for Biological Diversity attempts to raise awareness and knowledge of biodiversity challenges. Although it was originally observed in late December, the United Nations General Assembly later agreed to change the date to May 22 to mark the 1992 adoption of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD).
The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the UN Post-2015 Development Agenda include the International Day for Biological Diversity. In the Rio+20 result paper "The World We Want: A Future for All," the important role of biodiversity in sustainable development was acknowledged.
The theme for International Day for Biological Diversity 2022 is “Building a Shared Future for all Life.” The slogan expresses the notion that biodiversity is the foundation upon which we may rebuild better. This is in the context of the ongoing United Nations Decade on Restoration, which stresses that biodiversity is the answer to various sustainable development concerns.
Save biodiversity to save human life.

When we examine our relationship with the environment, we must acknowledge that, despite all technological advancements, humans rely fully on healthy, diverse ecosystems for water, food, medicine, clothes, fuel, refuge, and energy. And these are only a handful of the features that nature offers us.
More than 3 billion people rely on marine and coastal biodiversity for their livelihoods, while another 1.6 billion rely on forests, according to the United Nations. Conservation of all Earth's species is no longer only altruistic; it is critical to human survival.
Although biodiversity is critical to human survival, humans are the ones who pose the greatest damage to it. Climate change has a number of irreversible effects on biodiversity.
As a result of climate change, the polar bear population in Canada has declined by 22% in the last thirty years.
Due to environmental dryness caused by global warming, up to 74 species of cloud forest frogs have already vanished. In order to incubate their eggs, these amphibians require precise humidity conditions, which are no longer present in many environments.
In just a few decades, the population of the flycatcher, a bird that resides in the Netherlands, has decreased by 90%. Once again, climate change is to blame for a shift in behavior among his food supply.
Due to intensive farming practices, such as excessive tillage and chemical use, epigeic earthworms (surface dwellers) have vanished in several fields in the United Kingdom. Their extinction entails poor soil fertility, poorer crop yields, and carbon loss from the soil, all of which contribute to climate change. These earthworms play a major role in agriculture by facilitating good crop yield through vermicomposting.
The United Nations' International Day for Biological Diversity raises awareness of this crucial issue and encourages people to take action to safeguard our planet's valuable biodiversity.
