The Lady Vanishes (1938, Alfred Hitchcock)
27/01/2024
The Lady Vanishes is a 1938 film directed by Alfred Hitchcock.
The story is based on the novel The Wheel Spins by Ethel Lina White.
A remake was made in 1979 entitled The Lady Vanishes, directed by Anthony Page, with Angela Lansbury in the role of Miss Froy.
A train is running from the Balkans towards London when an avalanche stops it in a remote village. In the hotel where they are forced to stay overnight, they meet some English citizens: Iris Henderson, the young heiress of a rich jam producer, returning from a holiday with two friends and headed to London to get married to a nobleman; Miss Froy, amiable old lady in a tweed suit, housekeeper and music teacher for six years in that country and about to return to her homeland; Caldicott and Charters, cricket fans, very upset about the forced interruption of their trip which risks making them miss the final phase of a test match in Manchester; Gilbert, a musician with a passion for folklore who records folk songs with a little too much noise, resulting in a lively confrontation with Iris; a couple of lovers whose greatest concern is not to be recognized.
Miss Froy tries to escape into the woods, after leaving a coded message contained in the musical notes of a melody that Gilbert must learn by heart and take to the British Foreign Office in case she fails to save herself.
As promised Iris and Gilbert go to the Foreign Office in Whitehall to report the coded message.
The expiration of the contract that Gainsboroug (subsidiary of Gaumont-British) had taken over from Gaumont and Hitchcock had to complete the second film (the first was Young and Innocent) foreseen by the agreement with Edward Black.
In May 1936 Frank had proposed to Gainsboroug to buy the rights to White's novel, he had worked on the screenplay together with Sidney Gilliat but Roy William Neill, the director who had been entrust with the direction, din not complete the film.
The role of the lovable old spy was entrusted to Dame May Whutty, who would later be cast in a minor role in Suspicion.
In the role of the rich young bourgeois the director used Margaret Lockwood, under contract to the production company; in the role of the penniless musician Hitchcock would have liked Robert Donat, the protagonist of The 39 Steps, who had to give it up for health reasons; Michael Redgrave was the chosen, already famous as a young theater actor in John Gielgud's company, here at his first film test: the director liked him for his detached and casula style.
In the fundamental interview given by Alfred Hitchcock to François Truffaut, published for the first time in 1966, the director said about this film of his: "It was shot in 1938 in the small studio in Islington, on a thirty meter platform and with a wagon on top."
In addition to all his dearest themes (the incredibleity of the truth and the game of appearances, spies, travel, the relationship between a couple and love, humor) there is a strong political connotation, influenced by international current affairs: 1938 is the year of the Munich Agreement, evoked by the white handkerchief waved by the lawyer, an unpleasant neutralist who, regardless of his lover and the other Englishmen, hands himself over to the spies and gets himself killed. Finally, the main enemy of the film, Doctor Hart, alludes to Germany both his surname and in his origin ( in that same year Czechoslovakia also begins to "disappear", with the annexation of the Sudetenland to Germany, a prologue of what will happen in the following year). Hitchcock declares anti-Nazi sentiments expressed on other occasions in his films (The Man Who Knew Too Much, The 39 Steps, Secret Agent, Foreign Correspondent, Saboteur, Lifeboat, Notorious).

Propaganda
Jessie Matthews (Evergreen, First a Girl, It's Love Again, Gangway)—known as “the dancing divinity”, jessie matthews was a british musical star of stage and screen in the 20s and 30s - if you're an enjoyer of lavish art deco musicals of the likes of fred and ginger, busby berkeley etc, definitely give her movies a try they are delightful! (tantalizingly there were multiple attempts made to pair her and fred together that never came to fruition - gaumont-british tried to get fred for evergreen and mgm wanted jessie for a damsel in distress.) and for the women in tuxedos enjoyers, her 1935 movie first a girl was the first english language remake of viktor und viktoria, famously later remade with julie andrews.
Lotus Long (Tokyo Rose, Last of the Pagans, Think Fast Mr Moto)— Look at those doe-like eyes! Her abundant hair! Her perfect Cupid's bow!
This is round 2 of the tournament. All other polls in this bracket can be found here. Please reblog with further support of your beloved hot sexy vintage woman.
[additional propaganda submitted under the cut.]
Jessie Matthews:
Tumblr media
Star of British 1930s stage and screen, she introduced classic songs by Noel Coward and Rogers and Hart to English audiences, and then played perky heroines, but today it’s her genderswapping role in First A Girl that probably gets most attention.

Peter Lorre: Imported Boogey Man, Teutonic Counterpart to Charles Laughton
Referencing "The Man Who Knew Too Much," from The Evening Star (The Washington, D.C.), September 13, 1935:

Text:
Nevertheless it was Lorre who impressed the critics. Lorre who won a fat contract with M-G-M and earned a reputation for ghoulish genius akin to that of Charles Laughton. Tomorrow the imported boogey man makes his bow before the Washington cinema public at the Belasco, and students of the satanic in acting will flock to the standard of a new leader. At an advance exhibition by the great Lorre yesterday the local drama desks discovered that he is not actually the man who knew too much in the Gaumont-British picture—that his technique is comparable to Laughton's in more ways than one. Both suggest unimaginable depravity by gentle, childlike mannerisms belied in various distorted smiles and eye-rollings. Both can produce a laugh that sounds like nothing human or of this earth. The Lorre of "The Man Who Knew Too Much" is not far removed from the Laughton of "Payment Deferred." Since the Englishman has now graduated to high comedy and heavy drama, both typified by his "Ruggles of Red Gap," there unquestionably is a place on the American screen for his Teutonic counterpart.
Students of the Satanic in acting!? I mean...
...yeah, I've got nothing. Let's just ignore his entire repertoire leading up to this point, eh?
And I guess if you wanted to stir up interest in a foreign actor who was now in America, you compare him to . . . another foreign actor who had already gotten acclaim.
There's more if you get the article:
Lorre is depicted as an arch-criminal and heartless fiend in 'The Man Who Knew Too Much,' but no motive for his acts ever Is revealed.

Working with Disney
Marc Davis (1913-2000)
Tumblr media
Marc Davis was an idea man He started working for Walt Disney Studios on December 2, 1935, and retired in 197.
Marc began as an apprentice animator on Snow White and also worked as a story sketch artist and character designer on Bambi. Because of his impressive performance in the previous film, Walt Wanted to make him an animator and so Marc was trained by Frank Tomas and Milt Khal (two of the Nine Old Men of Animation)
Tumblr media
Davis is mostly known for his iconic female character design such as Tinker Bell (Peter Pan), Maleficent (Sleeping Beauty), and Cruella De Vill (101 Dalmatians).
He was once asked to choose a favorite among his Disney ladies, and he simply answered “Each of my women characters has her own unique style; I love them all in different ways.” And that's true, none of his characters were the same.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Later in 1962, after 30 years of animating, Marc became one of Disney’s first imagineers. He would design character concepts for Disneyland attractions including Pirates of the Caribbean, it’s a small world, Haunted House, and more.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There is quite an interesting book written by Pete Docter and Christopher Merritt called ‘Marc Davis in his own words’ that explores his career and has an incredible collection of his artwork. Here is a video where the authors talk about it.
youtube
I picked Marc Davis mostly because he is also one of the Nine Old Men of Animation, but aside from that I did not know much about him. When I read that he was the man behind Cruella’s design, I got even more excited to learn more about his work.
Something I realized when reading the interview is how, as an animator, you are not always allowed to do things in your own way. As Marc said, “I think this is one of the most difficult things in a cartoon, to keep a unity of all the characters when you have many different people, with different outlooks on drawing and styling everything”.
Dave Hand (1900-1986)
Tumblr media
Dave Hand started his animation career at the J. R. Bray Studio, then moved to work on the Out of the Inkwell series. Later, he tried to pursue live-action filmmaking. However, he returned to animation and joined Walt Disney Studios in 1930 where he would stay until 1944.
Hand worked as an animator in a variety of shorts like Flowers and Trees (the first film made in three-strip Technicolor), The Chain Gang, Midnight in a Teashop, among other Silly Symphonies.
Tumblr media
Dave started directing in 1932 with Trader Mickey, and by the late 1930s Walt assigned him as supervising director of Disney’s first animated feature-length film: Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. And after, he got the same role in Bambi
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hand also got the opportunity to direct Who Killed Cock Robin? and Three Orphan Kittens. As well as animation supervisor on Victory Through Air Power.
After 14 years with Disney, Dave left the studio in 1944 and went to England for an animation opportunity and established Gaumont British Animation in 1946.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
During my research, I was able to find a more complete interview done in 973 by Michael Barrier, and an article written about 1984. Even though David was an important figure at the studio, he was rarely interviewed, and his autobiography does not say much about his time working at Disney.
I picked Dave Hand because he mostly worked as a director during his Disney career, I thought it would be nice to see the perspective of a director instead of only writing about animators.
From reading the interviews, I could notice that Hand was very practical, and quite “ambitious” as he is described by one of his assistants. He would often push and encourage the animators and even Walt Disney himself sometimes to do the best they could to produce an excellent result. He was willing to redo his work as many times as necessary until he got satisfied with the results.
That is an attitude I admire and feel lacking in the latest Disney movies. For the last few years, it feels like none of the new films were made thinking about achieving the story’s potential, especially thelive-action ones. Most of them feel shallow and with little effort to bring back the Disney classics we all grow up with.
If I learned something from Dave Hand is that we should always keep trying to achieve our best and then go forward.
down bellow will be listed the sites I based my research on.

On this date in Classic rock history…
March 31st
2015 - Joni Mitchell
Joni Mitchell was rushed to hospital after being found unconscious at her Los Angeles home. The singer songwriter was admitted to intensive care where she underwent tests. Los Angeles fire officials said paramedics had answered a 911 call in Bel Air, where Mitchell lives, and had taken a patient whom they did not identify to hospital.
2011 - Men at Work
Australian band Men at Work lost an appeal against a ruling which found their 1983 hit single 'Down Under' was partly copied from a folk song. Australia's Federal Court upheld the decision which stated part of the song's melody came from the tune Kookaburra Sits in the Old Gum Tree. Record label EMI argued the writers did not plagiarise because the inclusion of two bars from the tune was a tribute.
1995 - Jimmy Page
Jimmy Page escaped being knifed when a fan rushed the stage at a Page and Plant gig at Auburn Hills, Michigan. The fan was stopped by two security guards, who he knifes instead. After his arrest, he told police that he wanted to kill Jimmy Page because of the Satanic music he was playing.
1992 - Def Leppard
Def Leppard released their fifth studio album Adrenalize, the first by the band following the 1991 death of guitarist Steve Clark. Former Dio and Whitesnake guitarist Vivian Campbell, was brought in as the newest member in April 1992. He appears in all promotional videos for the album's singles (except 'Let's Get Rocked'), despite not playing on the album.
1976 - Led Zeppelin
Led Zeppelin released Presence, their seventh studio album, on their own Swan Song Records in the UK. Presence has now been certified 3 times Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for US sales in excess of 3 million copies.
1964 - The Beatles
Filming for A Hard Day's Night, The Beatles played a 'live television performance' in front of a studio of screaming fans (one of those fans was Phil Collins). The four songs used in the film were ‘Tell Me Why’, ‘I Should Have Known Better’, ‘And I Love Her’, and ‘She Loves You’.
Page not 1960 - Lonnie Donegan
Lonnie Donegan was at No.1 on the UK singles chart with 'My Old Man's A Dustman', his third No.1. Donegan became the first British artist to enter the UK chart at No.1, the only other artist to achieve this feat at this time was Elvis Presley. The song which was recorded live at the Gaumont cinema in Doncaster was a music hall novelty song.
1958 - Chuck Berry
Chuck Berry's rock 'n' roll classic 'Johnny B. Goode' single was released. It entered the US charts six weeks later and peaked at No.8 on the chart. The song's original lyrics referred to Johnny as a 'colored boy', but Berry later acknowledged that he changed it to 'country boy' to ensure radio play.
1957 - Elvis Presley
Billed as the nation's only atomic powered singer, Elvis Presley played two shows (2pm and 6pm), at the Olympia in Detroit, Michigan in front of 24,000 fans.
1949 - RCA Victor
RCA Victor introduced the 45rpm single record, which had been in development since 1940. The 7-inch disc was designed to compete with the Long Playing record introduced by Columbia a year earlier. Both formats offered better fidelity and longer playing time than the 78rpm record that was currently in use. Advertisements for new record players boasted that with 45rpm records, the listener could hear up to ten records with speedy, silent, hardly noticeable changes.

Propaganda
Katharine Hepburn (Bringing Up Baby, The Philadelphia Story, The African Queen)—This woman. I have been obsessed with her for years. I know the urban legend is a popular one at this point of her walking around set in her underwear when her pants were stolen and she was left with only a skirt, but the pants thing is honestly enough for her to be the hottest in the room in my book. She refused to wear anything else at a time when the public in general and especially the studios did not like that. She was independent, stubborn, and so so very capable. Competency kink anyone? Also, if you want one final way that Katharine's entire life was saying "fuck you" to the establishment, it started young! Her mother took her to suffrage events, and she never got rid of that attitude of justice. I feel like I have barely scratched the surface of all the ways she was such a badass that I'm turning into a rambling mess instead.
This is round 3 of the tournament. All other polls in this bracket can be found here. Please reblog with further support of your beloved hot sexy vintage woman.
[additional propaganda submitted under the cut.]
Katharine Hepburn propaganda:
Tumblr media
I'm sure one million people will submit her as an iconic Hollywood star but that iconicness might lead people to forget just how insanely hot she was like she had it ALL she was skilled she was funny she was smart she was beautiful AND she was likely bisexual
Tumblr media
The single word I would use to explain Katherine Hepburn's appeal is *range*. In her acting career, that meant covering all the ground between lush period dramas and the comedies she did with Carey Grant and Spencer Tracey. In terms of hotness, it meant an uncanny ability to bring anything from a Dietrich-esque androgyny to some of the best Classic Hollywood Glamour you will ever see.
Katharine hep was so cool. The VIBES, the INDEPENDENCE,,, living life on her own terms.
Tumblr media
she just had this.... bearing to her, this power. she could be funny, even silly (like in bringing up baby) but also so regal and elegant. she was nobody's fool and dear GOD that's so hot
Fancam link
Tumblr media
She’s not only stunningly gorgeous (those eyes that pierce your soul! a jawline you could cut glass with!) but her delivery and physical presence in roles gives off confidence and authority in such a sexy way (truly the biggest dick energy of Old Hollywood). Her fiery energy in The Philadelphia Story? Unmatched.
Tumblr media
God she's. She's so hot y'all. She has the range!!!!! Funny and dramatic and lovely
Tumblr media
She IS the transatlantic accent. Classically gorgeous and such a strong personality.
Tumblr media
She's literally one of the funniest women to ever live! She goes shot for shot with Cary Grant in Philadelphia Story and we damn well love her for it! She's the most annoying creature to ever live in Bringing Up Baby but she's so insane and funny that we simply cannot help but fall in love with her (and root for her to give Grant an aneurysm!)
Tumblr media
i know she's accounted for but i really want to be sure someone has submitted the scene in bringing up baby where she's pretending to be a gangster
youtube
She simply stuns onscreen; you cannot do anything but be captivated by her presence. Also a non-gender-conforming icon and mild tumblr celebrity by virtue of that one picture from The Warrior's Husband (stage play).
Tumblr media
Katharine Hepburn was out here casually changing the lives of young butch lesbians with her gender swag! She wore pants even when people said she shouldn’t, she refused to marry or have kids, and she wore menswear in at LEAST one movie!
Tumblr media
If I start thinking about her face for too long I will cry she is so so hot. Katherine is so charismatic and charming in everything she appears in - watch her adopt a leopard and fall in love with her. Also she has the biggest dick energy ever (she and her pal Lauren Bacall share that accolade). Also had an incredibly long and varied career from screw ball comedies to serious dramas - she’s a queen of the screen and I adore her.
Tumblr media
Someone's got to mention it, but she's won the most Oscars out of any performer and is largely considered one of the greatest actresses ever. She's got an incredible voice, an incredible presence, and she absolutely steals every scene she's in. She was private person and deemed standoffish and unapproachable, but she was also profoundly concerned for people's rights and was an outspoken supporter of abortion access. Finally, the Katharine Hepburn slacks look is just iconic. I mean look at her.
Tumblr media
(I hope someone else submits real propaganda but just in case they don't:) Cries. Screams. Wails. The woman who singlehandedly made me realize I was bi. A real "do i want to look like her. be her. or be with her.' crisis, where the answer was all three. Holy shit please all three.
Tumblr media
Jessie Matthews:
Tumblr media
Star of British 1930s stage and screen, she introduced classic songs by Noel Coward and Rogers and Hart to English audiences, and then played perky heroines, but today it’s her genderswapping role in First A Girl that probably gets most attention.
