cotton candy
Gon picks it up and coughs, looking at the price.
20,000 Jenny?!
But feeling Killua’s small fingers gripping his arm…
He takes it and goes to pay.
Killua’s smile alone is worth the hole in his wallet.

Everything is blurry… blood roars in his ears, and he digs his nails into the grass, trying to push himself off the ground.
He can’t even see the jerkwad anymore, but he can just feel and sense the idiot waving his glasses around before the bully throws them to the ground. A gasp leaves Killua’s lips, and he reaches for the blob of purple, grabbing the edges and holding them close to his chest.
Leorio paid a lot for them… after Killua had struggled for months, he didn’t want to be made fun of, not more. And he thought he’d look stupid and dumb, and-
He doesn’t really care about most idiots' opinions, just, just his crush; still, he felt insecure… but Leorio had cheered him up by saying they’d match now, and so Killua didn’t mind anymore; his chest felt warm, fuzzy. He poked jabs at the old man, but Killua felt happy. That he could be even a little bit like him.
“Hah! What a loser, crybaby!”
It doesn’t bother him… it doesn’t- Killua can feel the tears prick his eyes, and he bites down on his bottom lip, inhaling sharply.
He doesn’t care!
Their words are like daggers slicing his skin, but he doesn’t care…
He doesn’t… it just reminds him of home… no, that place. His real home was with Leorio.
“Hey!”
Killua digs his fingers into his sweater, his tiny fingers curled around the frame of his glasses, choking back a sob; his skin feels all tingly, his head aching from the pressure. He recognizes that voice anywhere, his heart pounding and crimson spotting his skin.
It’s only recently Gon became his friend… Before that, Killua had just admired him like all the other girls in the school behind a locker, always peeking his head away whenever Gon even so much as walked near him.
He forgot his lunch one day, and for some reason, Gon noticed and shared his…
Killua feels large warmth cup against his shoulder, and he peers up through his bangs at Gon’s blurry figure.
Gon uses his free hand to gently take the glasses from Killua, placing them on his face and smiling softly.
“Killua? You okay?”
He can’t answer. He shakes his head before nodding, and Gon chuckles softly, standing up and turning around.
“Ugh! You two make me wanna barf!”
Killua feels his heart drop to his stomach as he stares at one piece of grass, shaking his head.
“Oh? Really?”
Gon genuinely asks, and Killua snaps his head back up, conflicted emotions running through him, his eyes wide. Gon, you idiot! How can you be so-so…?
A loud smack draws him right out of his thoughts, and he stumbles off the ground, reaching out and grabbing Gon’s sleeve.
“Gon!”
He looks up at Gon, fear and worry flickering in his eyes, but Gon turns around and smiles at him, despite the fact that he has a big black eye now.
“I’m okay!”
Killua grabs his sleeve tighter, shaking his head furiously. No!
“Gon…”
Conflicted, he starts to let go of Gon’s sleeve, only for the idiot jerk face to rush forward; a gasp caught in his throat as everything happens so fast, he can barely understand, his frame trembling.
Gon steps in front of him, catching the guy’s punch, and his happy-go-lucky attitude changes like the flip of a coin, his expression determined and his jaw tight, he leans his other fist back, and Killua snaps out of his trance, wrapping his arms around Gon’s stomach.
“Gon!”
Gon freezes, slowly lowering his arm and throwing the guy's own arm away from them.
The coward sprints off, clearly having almost pissed himself, and Killua backs up, his face bright red, as he brushes his hair behind his ear, looking at the ground.
“Killua? Are you alright? He didn’t hurt you, right?”
Killua plays with the edges of his sleeves, shaking his head, chewing on his lip, and glancing up shyly.
He’s immediately reminded of the blow Gon endured for him, air caught in his throat. It looks painfully swollen…
His skin prickles and he rushes forward with a fist, raising his arm up and punching Gon in the chest.
Gon doesn’t even flinch; in fact, he’s an immovable rock against Killua’s small blow and frame.
“You idiot!”
Killua punches him again and again, tears welling up in his eyes.
“Idiot!” Punch. “Idiot!” Punch. “Idiot!” Punch. “IDIOT!”
Gon just looks down at him with a soft smile, grabbing his shoulders gently.
“I’m okay. It doesn’t hurt that bad! The guys out on the field give me concussions all the time!”
Killua looks up, puffing out his cheeks into a pout.
Was that supposed to make him feel better?
MORONIC JOCK!
B-but that’s why Killua likes Gon…
He steps away, still huffing and puffing, plopping down in the grass, tilting his nose up in the air, looking away from Gon, and folding his arms over his chest.
“IDIOT! I’m not helping you with your homework anymore!“
Gon whines, sitting down next to him.
Killua looks down at his lap, plucking out a piece of grass between his legs.
Gon hums beside him, slapping his hands down onto his knees.
“So you’re mad?”
No… he’s not… he’s just…
“No! I just! You idiot! Stupid muscle-head!” He stops pulling at the grass, curling into himself and blinking back tears.
“…stop getting hurt… for me…”
“Ehhh? But Killua?”
Killua sniffs, lifting his glasses up, and wiping his sleeves under his eyes.
“That’s what my muscles are for!”
Killua almost drops his glasses, his heart stopping and his ears burning, as he slides them back down, stringing his fingers together.
“You liar, they’re for football!”
Killua knows that… but he can’t stop how his heart pounds…
“No! Well, maybe! They used to be! But now they’re for protecting you!”
Killua looks over, and Gon gives him a flashy grin, gently reaching out and taking Killua’s forearm. Killua let’s him, let’s Gon pull him close to his chest, tears rolling down his cheeks for a different reason.
This warmth, it’s nice, it’s happy. It’s. Overwhelming. Too nice.
“Gon?”
He pulls away from the musky smell of Gon’s shirt, peeking up timidly.
“Mmm?”
“Thank-thank you for saving me…”
Gon just peers down with a grin.
“Always.”
