Animal of the Day!
Warty Frogfish (Antennarius maculatus)
Tumblr media
(Photo from the Aquarium Club)
Conservation Status-
Habitat- Indian Ocean coral reefs; Pacific Ocean coral reefs
Size (Weight/Length)- 15 cm
Diet- Small fish; Shrimp; Small crabs
Cool Facts- The warty frogfish is the master of coral reef camouflage. Over the span of a few weeks, they can turn their coloration to match their surroundings. Even in bleached coral reefs, warty frogfish can turn white to match the dead corals. A specially adapted lure with a bait-like juts from their forehead. Although it normally lays flat on their back, when hunting they use this lure to bring fish into striking range. Their modified pectoral fins that look like feet are used to walk across corals and the ocean floor rather than swim. In open water, warty frogfish can swim although they prefer walking when searching for prey.
Rating- 13/10 (Females have a taste for cannibalism.)

🐠 Daily Fish Fact: 🐠
The Hairy Frogfish is covered in spines, which resemble strands of hair. They allow the marine animal to camouflage itself against coral and seaweed. It can also change its color to blend in with its surroundings. Unlike other fish, this species doesn't swim. Instead they walk on their wide fins along the seafloor as they look for food.

Daily fish fact #391
Frogfish!
Tumblr media
Though they vary a lot, species can be identified by their lures! Each lure takes on a specific appearance, usually a small prey species of other fish.

I love how people try and deny evolution as if there aren't so many fish with legs at the moment

fish doggys, of the frogfish and dog-faced puffer varieties
image ID: 6 drawings of cartoon dog-fish hybrids, akin to the structure of mermaids. 3 are of frogfish with dog heads, and the front fins replaced with stumpy dog legs. One has a squashed bulldog face with dark patches, one has floppy ears and spots, and another lays on its back getting its belly rubbed. These are drawn in dark purple on a light purple background. The other three are of dog-faced pufferfish, drawn in brown lines on a yellow background. Two have a structure similar to the frogfish, including the dog head and front legs. One of them is puffed up angrily. A more complicated design has a more defined dog-like body with back legs replaced by fins, and a fish tail. The different background colors bubble into each other. End ID.
