On This Day in Baseball History May 2, 1923: During pregame ceremonies, the American League President Ban Johnson celebrates New York Yankees shortstop Everett Scott. Scott became the first player in the history of Major League Baseball to play in 1,000 consecutive games.
The previous record for consecutive games during the pre-modern era was held by George P. Pinckney who played 577 consecutive games for the Brooklyn team of both the American Association and National League. His streak started on September 2, 1885 and ended in 1890. The then modern age MLB record for consecutive games played was held by Fred Luderus of the Philadelphia Phillies who played for 533 consecutive games from June 2, 1916 through 1919. The former American League record was held by Eddie Collins of the Chicago White Sox who played for 478 consecutive games.
Scott would start his streak on June 20, 1916 while playing for the Boston Red Sox. Scott’s record streak would reach 1,307 games and end on May 5, 1925. He would be eclipsed by the Iron Horse Lou Gehrig, who would play a total of  2,130 games from June 1, 1925 to April 30, 1939. Cal Ripken Jr. is the current record holder having played 2,632 consecutive games from 1982 - 1995. Scott still sits at number three on the all-time consecutive games played list.
The game would finish with a 3-0 shutout of the Yankees by Washington Senators ace Walter “Big Train” Johnson.
