What a scrappy and gritty win for the Yankees on Opening Day. They did it with contributions from the entire lineup. Juan Soto paid instant dividends for the Yankees with his game winning throw to home plate in the bottom of the 9th to get Dubon out.
The Yankees didn't win too many of these kind of games last season. It was a promising sight.

On This Day in History June 2, 1935: Famed slugger Babe Ruth announces his retirement from Professional Baseball.
Ruth was traded to the Boston Braves with promises of future managerial opportunities and profit sharing from gate receipts. In reality the promises were hollow which were made worse by his conflicts with management and by his poor performance both on the field and at bat. Ruth would finish his last season with a .181 batting average with 6 homers and 12 RBI in 72 at-bats.

I normally do this on my @historysisco and @baseballsisco IG pages but I found this book to good not to recommend. Chasing Space: An Astronaut's Story of Grit, Grace, and Second Chances by Leland Melvin shows us why we should never quit on our dreams and aspirations. Here is how the book is described: "In this uplifting memoir, former NASA astronaut and professional athlete in the NFL, Leland Melvin offers an examination of the intersecting role of community, determination, and grace that align to shape our opportunities and outcomes. Chasing Space is not the story of one man, but the story of many men, women, scientists, and mentors who helped him defy the odds and live out an uncommon destiny. While training with NASA, Melvin suffered a severe injury that left him deaf. Leland was relegated to earthbound assignments, but chose to remain and support his astronaut family. His loyalty paid off. Recovering partial hearing, he earned his eligibility for space travel. He served as mission specialist for two flights aboard the shuttle Atlantis, working on the International Space Station. As a chemist, athlete, engineer and space traveler, Leland’s life story is a study in the science of achievement. His personal insights illuminate how grit and grace, are the keys to overcoming adversity and rising to success." #LelandMelvin #ChasingSpace #NASA #Astronaut #BooksatmyJob #NeverGiveUp #KeepMovingForward #WorkForYourDreams #Hardwork #HardWorkPaysOff #RollingUpYourSleeves #GettingYourHandsDirty #LeadByExample #Entrepreneurship #Motivation #MotivationalWords #Success #Failure #Resilience #SiscoVanilla #SiscoVanillaIsStepping (at Barnes & Noble)

Holy shit, Ian Hamilton is like the Iceman out there on the mound!!! Today was the first time I've actually paid attention to how he pitches. Man, he has ice water in his veins. Shows no emotion. I like it.

It seems like yesterday when NL Umpire John McSherry collapsed on the field during Opening Day 1996 in Cincinnati. He would subsequently pass away. This one hits a little close to home.
I was working a law firm im Yonkers,, NY and we were at a local bar in Riverdale having lunch when he collapsed live on TV. The bartender and some patrons were shocked and got up to use the payphones since McSherry was not only a native of the Bronx, but he was a regular at that exact bar.
When we got back to the office, one of the secretaries asked me what was happening with the game. I told her that an umpire collapsed on the field. She got hysterical and asked if it was "John." We told her that it was indeed John McSherry. She started crying. He lived in her building. Her and her husband Doc were close friends with him. It was truly one of the saddest moments I've beared witness to.
May you continue to Rest in Peace John "Big John" McSherry.

Happy Opening Day!!! Here is my MLB Immaculate Grid number 360!!!
Not a bad group of nine for this grid. I dont get to use "El Presidente" Dennis Martinez very often. For today I had to go back to the Montreal Expos days for a 2000K pitcher in Nationals history. I could have used him in the Cleveland 2000K box instead of Eck. But I'm happy using both choices.
Ken Hill is a blast from the past. He was a member of that amazing 1994 Expos team that never got their chance to show their abilities in the postseason. The big "What If?" for the strike ending 1994 season was potentially the Expos vs Yankees in the World Series. 🤔
Enjoy watching the ballgames today. On to grid 361.

The statue outside of Maimoneides Park commemorating the time that Pee Wee Reese put his arm around Jackie Robinson's shoulder in support of number 42 on May 13, 1947 in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Reese who was the captain of the Brooklyn Dodgers hailed from Kentucky. His act silenced the crowd when he showed that Robinson not only belonged in the Majors but that he was there to stay.
The statue was sculpted by William Behrends and unveiled on January 11, 2005.

On This Day in Baseball History June 17, 1960: The player known as the Splendid Splinter becomes the 4th member of the 500 homerun club. Ted Williams joins the Babe Ruth, Jimmy Foxx and Mel Ott with a two run homerun against the Cleveland Indians. Williams would finish his career at the end of that season with 521 homers.
In reality, Williams could have surpassed the 600 homerun mark if not 700 had he played the almost five seasons that he gave up to serve in World War II and the Korean War as a pilot.

On This Day in Baseball History July 5, 1898: 22-year old Lizzie Armstrong (August 31, 1877 – March 1919) would become the first woman to pitch for the Atlantic League which was a men's professional league. She came in relief during the 9th inning for the Reading Coal Heavers against the Allentown Peanuts (or Peaches as per another source.) Reading was leading 5–0 when Arlington entered the game and quickly loaded the bases on two hits and a walk. She managed to get the next three batters out to close the game out and preserve the shutout.
I've found two differing theories of why she stopped playing for the Atlantic League. One was that she was to play for the Newark franchise against Hartford. She was forbidden to play since Hartford didn't want to take a chance at losing to a team with a woman player. The other one is that once the allure of a woman baseball player wore off, she was let go by the league.
Armstrong would continue to play with barnstorming teams and other independents in a variety of leagues including the Boston Bloomers who were a women's traveling Baseball team.

On This Day in Baseball History June 30, 1938: The Philadelphia Phillies home park of the Baker Bowl hosted its final Major League baseball game with the a 14-1 drubbing of the Phillies by the New York Giants.
Built in 1887, ballpark had unique dimensions to fit the shape of the stadium. The outfield was 342 feet to left field, 408 feet to center field, 300 to right center field and 281 feet to right field. Right center and right field has a 40 foot high wall which was later increased to 60 feet.) For a point of comparison, Fenway Park's Green Monster is 37.5 feet tall.
The Phillies played the rest of the 1938 season at Shibe Park aka Connie Mack Stadium and would play there until the end of the 1970 season.
