The notion of history as a chain of events that make up the past, capable of being isolated and arranged in a historical narrative, fails to contemplate the movement of time of the historical process. Francesco Arena’s research is centred around ways of thinking about temporality, by revealing irruptions in the course of things that seem to conform to a linear development marked by causes and effects. The historical and the personal constantly overlap in the artist’s work in his attempt to represent historical events based on a factual relationship with himself. We frequently encounter the use of the artist’s anthropometric data (such as weight, body mass, height, distance from his eyes to the floor), acting as tangible figures to quantify history.
The date of September 26th, coinciding with the opening of the exhibition, marks the 78th anniversary of the death of Walter Benjamin in Portbou (Catalonia). Benjamin advanced a theory of progressive history that questioned the nineteenth-century concept of historical temporality, that is, a history according to a purpose and a subject acting in uniform linearity. He proposed instead that history errupts in moments of standstill which, in their arrest, manifest a structure of tensions to a revolutionary moment. This idea resonates throughout Arena’s pratice, where the eternal and the ephemeral meet; just as Benjamin establishes a conception of the present as “the time of the Now” (Jetztzeit), a temporal particle, the true place where history can happen.
The work, Angolo Stanco, which gives the exhibition its title, refers to the distance between the present and the death of Benjamin, breaking the continuum of history revealing the emergence and deployment of connections of distinctive temporalities, and to the configuration of history as the basis of a disruptive movement. A 78-year-old performer seated in an iron structure forming a right angle, recounts his life to the viewer. In this way, Arena analyzes the idea of celebrating the anniversary of a death through its opposite.
Past events become subject in other works in the exhibition. Regardless of their duration “the moment itself is nothing more than the continuity of time, a pure limit that simultaneously brings together and divides the past and the future “[1] . These intercepted fragments of time are comprised between different periods: one year, as we see in Marble between 1 year where a block of marble is placed between two diaries spanning one year; Metro di zucchero smezzato (78 giorni) refers to the time that Arena needs for the sugar sachets left over from his coffee to reach one meter; or in the 4’33 ” of John Cage’s silence recorded in 1299.5 cm of cassette tape, and contained in the length of the artist’s extended arms, materialized in bronze, in 8 Arms with Times.

Carta Abierta por el injusto despido de María Inés Rodriguez del Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Burdeos
En días pasados nos enteramos del despido intempestivo de María Inés Rodriguez. Aquí la carta que ha estado circulando en francés e inglés e donde varios artistas, curadores y profesionales de museos de arte invitan a adherir la carta y protestar por el injusto despido a Maria Inés Rodríguez del CAPC de Burdeos
El 8 de marzo, el día internacional de los derechos de la mujer, nos enteramos por la prensa que Maria Inés Rodríguez será pronto retirada de su puesto como Directora del CAPC, Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Burdeos. En Francia, el número de mujeres directoras, presidentes y cabezas de instituciones culturales es tan pequeño, que este anuncio marca una regresión más en la paridad del fuertemente masculino mundo del arte francés.
Estamos estupefactos ante este retiro anunciado de una excelente profesional que es reconocida interacionalmente por su curiosidad, la pertinencia de su programa curatorial, y la calidad de sus exposiciones.
Maria Inés Rodríguez ha relanzado la dinámica del CAPC, con retrospectivas dedicadas de Beatriz Gonzalez, Alejandro Jodorowsky, Judy Chicago y Franz Erhard Walther, ganador del León de Oro en la 57 Bienal de Venecia, 2017. Ha brindado un lugar preponderante a la colección, que es excepcional, y la ha hecho permanentemente visible al público. Desde que fue contratada en 2013, ha promocionado el programa de ‘Amigos del CAPC’ y ha tenido éxito desarrollando colaboraciones y patrocinios, un rasgo fundamental en el rol de los directores de museo ahora que la financiación pública se ha hecho mucho más escasa.
Nos inquietan los pronunciamientos realizados por Fabien Robert, Secretario Mayor de Cultura y Patrimonio. En un artículo publicado en Rue 89 Bordeaux el Secretario Mayor se pregunta abiertamente 'si el arte contemporáneo aún existe’ y afirma que le gustaría ver cómo el CAPC se convierte en en una 'vitrina’ publicitaria de la ciudad. Afirmó para Liberation que 'el CAPC ha sido sujeto de intereses’, y que él ha visitado el lugar por meses, para hacer 'soucing’ y 'benchmarking’, con el fin de definir la orientación.
Somos profesionales del arte, queremos a los museos y a sus públicos. Para nosotros, transmitir el goce y la inteligencia de las obras de arte al mayor número de personas es un asunto crucial. Nos revuelve el estómago ver que, a través de los años, de una directora del CAPC a otra, recurren los mismos problemas: presiones constantes sobre la dirección del museo, que queda atrapada en los corsets de la administración municipal, falta de apoyo institucional, y el debilitamiento de la estabilidad financiera. El CAPC tiene una historia prestigiosa de importancia en el horizonte internacional. Sería un error dramático cortarla por motivaciones políticas de vista corta.
A través de esta carta, afirmamos nuestra afiliación al CAPC (Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Boudeaux) y al programa de su actual directora. Nos permitimos interpelar al Ministro de Cultura Francés, Françoise Nyssen, por la situación en Boudeaux, donde la supervivencia del arte contemporáneo parece estar en juego.

Suzanne Malyon, the head of the “Stop Anish Kapoor stealing our light and colour!” campaign, accused the artist of being “mean-spirited” following the approval of his studio extension by Southwark Council. Local residents fought against Kapoor’s proposed design, arguing that the architectural extension would block natural light to their properties. “He’s part of the moneyed, connected establishment and we feel like we’re not listened to as we’re less able to afford lawyers,” Malyon told Dezeen.

Accolades
Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami, Canada’s national Inuit group, presented the 2017 Cultural Repatriation Award to Chicago’s Field Museum and the Nunatsiavut government in Labrador. The award follows the return of 22 Inuit bodies that were exhumed in 1927 and 1928 by William Strong, an assistant curator at the museum.

"Art Olympia 2017," 2nd International Open Art Competition, Set for 2017 in Japan
- International Jurors to Select Winning Artworks on June 7, 2017 -
SAITAMA, Japan, Mar. 17, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Art Olympia is a new international open art competition held once in every two years. The main goals are to discover young talented artists and to support them so that their global art careers may flourish. Art Olympia will give away a total of approximately $500,000 in cash awards and prizes to 180 selected artists from all around the world.
The second Art Olympia will accept two-dimensional artworks only. This time, photographic works will be also accepted.
Artworks, submitted from all around the world, will first be reviewed at regional entry bases and then finally will be reviewed in Tokyo. Primary reviews will be done by using the images of artworks and the final review with real artworks. Moreover, the final review will use a point rating system, allowing the public to check the reviewing process to ensure fairness and transparency.
With an eye to supporting young artists, Art Olympia has created Student Category, allowing students to apply for both All-Entrants and Student Categories. A panel of jurors, comprised of experts from various fields of the international art world, provides aspiring artists with a rare chance to get their artworks reviewed by art experts other than their fellow countrymen and women.

Hyperallergic: From Immigrant Stories to Environmental Dread, EXPO Chicago Gets Dark

CHICAGO — One of the most startling works at this year’s EXPO Chicago is a lifesize guillotine by Piero Golia, at the top of which is lodged a steely-looking blade, ready to drop. “Untitled (Evil exists where good men do nothing)” fit its surroundings well when installed in an old courtyard two years ago during Basel, but currently confined within Gagosian’s booth at a convention center, it makes for an anachronistic curiosity amid other contemporary works at this major Midwestern showcase.
It is but one of the many pieces at the Navy Pier’s Festival Hall — the fair’s nucleus — that stands out for being exactly what you wouldn’t expect at a market-driven art show. Unlike your typical New York or Miami Beach fairs, EXPO Chicago seems more inviting for exhibitors to focus less on the “commercial” part of having “commercial spaces” and instead show work that’s unusual and, at times, plain weird. There is, notably, an almost complete lack of selfie-inviting mirrored pieces, yawn-provoking minimal sculptures, and flashy neon art. The 135 participating galleries — 19 of which are local — largely give us works that are fresher and spunkier. Among booths not to be missed are those of Chicago mainstays Rhona Hoffman and Kavi Gupta as well as the German dealer René Schmitt, who is showing works by Lorraine O’Grady and A.R. Penck.
High Maintenance by Yvette Mayorga at Chicago Artists Coalition
The most thoughtful display, though (and perhaps even the best booth) is that of the Chicago Artists Coalition. The very pink installation by Mexican-American artist Yvette Mayorga is a saccharine but bitter vision of the American dream, featuring Rococo-inspired paintings and sculptures that speak to the traumatic experiences of Mexican immigrants. An ornate, innocent-looking wallpaper reveals repeating figures of ICE agents; a recurring image of a car with a body in its trunk is an unflinching portrayal of how people need to put themselves in danger as they seek better futures. You don’t typically see political work this personal and raw at art fairs, much less by young artists of color. Can we get more of this, please?
A number of standout booths are similarly transportive in how they determinedly shed their white walls for zanier alternatives. Taking the cake for the strangest is R & Company, who presents a delightful show of Italian Radical Design from the 1960s and ’70s. The eye-catching, grid-patterned stage feels like a three-dimensional, blown up Surrealist painting (or an emoji wonderland), where coatracks resembling cacti and the famous, lippy “Marilyn Bocca Sofa” are accompanied by giant blocks of cheese (Swiss). Galerie Gmurzynska, too, seems bent on eschewing the typical fair experience despite its show of more predictable works by artists including Yves Klein, Laszlo Maholy-Nagy, and Fernand Léger. At its center are four decadent, cabana-like enclosures sewn from an array of ornate fabrics that each shelters an artwork, like an illicit secret. Designed by Antonio Monfreda, the luxurious tents are meant to offer viewers a private, quiet moment with the works — and as a nice, added touch, scent sacks are sewn into the soft walls to emit soothing fragrances. It’s a mode of encounter that’s memorable for its mystery and pace.

What contributes significantly to EXPO Chicago’s overall sense of thoughtful curation are the Special Exhibitions booths scattered throughout the fair, presented by non-profits, museums, and art organizations. The Chicago Artists Coalition’s show is one of these memorable displays that introduce timely social issues to this premier event, along with Itamar Gilboa’s “Food Chain Project,” a portion of which is presented by Tamar Dresdner Art Projects. The sculptural spread of foodstuffs is overwhelming, and intends to raise awareness of global issues such as hunger and obesity, with proceeds from any sales going toward Food Tank. A number of works also grapple with environmental concerns, from “A Library of Tears” — a grim yet graceful display of manmade pollution by Artadia awardee Claire Pentecost — to “White Wanderer” — a meditation on glacial collapse by local duo Luftwerk, who recently unveiled a companion soundscape by the Chicago River.

Then there are a handful of works that respond more specifically to the dark, disturbing days of our time. I spotted just one Donald Trump-inspired piece, a painting by Doug Argue at Marc Straus, which depicts the President frozen in a literal tweetstorm: Trump, shown in the infamous pose he made to mock a disabled reporter, is surrounded by fragments of his online rants, which swirl to form a nauseating vortex. More conspicuous was Anton Kern’s installation of large, square banners by Lara Schnitger, which hangs over an expansive seating area as part of the IN/SITU program. Schnitger’s “Suffragette City,” originally made for a 2015 performance, presents physical signs of the time, with each graphic banner incorporating feminist phrases like, “A Dress is Not a Yes.” The rallying cries are especially striking in this sterile setting, loud and defiant in both tone and design.
A statement you can’t miss is “Laocöon” by Sanford Biggers, courtesy of Monique Meloche. The 30-foot-long, inflated sculpture depicts a black man lying on his front, appearing to breathe as an air pump continuously fills and deflates the figure slightly. Wall text lets you know that this refers to Bill Cosby’s Fat Albert character — and thus addresses the rise and fall of his career — but also acknowledges that the piece stands as an uncomfortable reminder of how we are “confronted almost daily” with news of African Americans being killed by white police officers who typically go unpunished. Last year, writing for ARTNEWS, Taylor Renee Aldridge called out the problematic placement of this piece when on view at David Castillo Gallery during Art Basel Miami Beach. In that commercial, white-walled context, she wrote, the sculpture was just one of many examples of artworks about black bodies that risk becoming “a provocation marketed for consumption, rather than a catalyst for social change.”
At EXPO, “Laocoön” is still being shown in a commercial space, but rather than placed within a booth, it is part of the IN/SITU program, an exhibition curated by Florence Derieux that features site-specific works installed around the Navy Pier. Biggers’s sculpture is the sole occupant a room to the side of but open to the main arena, a carpeted hallway surrounded by windows that features some stairways. Unlike in Miami Beach, the figure looks toward the main thoroughfare, instead of a wall. Here, he personifies a man who has just collapsed in a lobby from some unseen blow, and left alone. The piece is disturbing — some may say triggering — for the violence it immediately evokes. For as cartoonish as the man’s expression is, it is a face that confronts passersby, and one that’s part of a slowly heaving human body. “Laocoön” is impossible to avoid, as it lies near a busy intersection in the fair’s layout. But rather than just spectacle, or backdrop to a marketplace, the sculpture implores engagement beyond just looking. The piece questions whether people will stop when confronted with a black body slumped on the ground — and will they then acknowledge the brutalities inflicted on these bodies daily? Maybe it’s a naive attempt to engage fairgoers as they run around, perhaps with champagne in hand. But at an art fair, where you don’t expect to find politicized spaces, much less ones this conspicuous, that chance for reflection is something.
