Mayor La Guardia's war on pinball machines received a boost from World War II, when metal was in high demand. On February 21, 1942, hizzoner looked over a collection of scrap metal, including pin balls and their machines, to donate to the federal government. It was estimated that the haul would be enough to make four 2,000-pound aerial bombs.

Mayor Fiorello La Guardia and Parks Commissioner Robert Moses often didn't see eye to eye despite revolutionizing New York's infrastructure together. Near the end of La Guardia's term, Victini experiences this firsthand.

Charles Schwab House
Tumblr media
The Charles M. Schwab House was a 75-room mansion in New York City. It was built for steel magnate Charles M. Schwab and was considered the classic example of a "white elephant", as it was built on the "wrong" side of Central Park, far from the more fashionable Upper East Side.
The house was designed by Maurice Hébert in an eclectic mix of Gothic Revival and Beaux-Arts, inspired by three French castles: Chenonceau, Blois and Azay-le-Rideau. It took four years to build (1902–1906) at a cost of six million dollars.
Schwab was a self-made man who became president of US Steel and later founded the Bethlehem Steel Company. However, he was a venture capitalist and went bankrupt in the Wall Street Crash of 1929. Charles died penniless ten years later, in 1939, leaving his home to be the official residence of New York's mayors. Unfortunately for the mansion, Fiorello La Guardia, then mayor, turned it down, saying, "what, 'me' in this?" After years of neglect, the house was demolished in 1947, replaced by a large apartment complex called "Casa Schwab".
In this version for The Sim 4, I made French gardens (I found the ones in the original house a little boring :P). The interiors were a big challenge, as I only found reference images for the staircase hall, but I tried to keep the same eclecticism in all the rooms.

King George VI and Queen Elizabeth travel in a motorcade during their visit to New York. With them are New York Mayor Fiorello La Guardia and Governor Herbert H. Lehman // June 10, 1939
For reasons of safety and speed, the Royal procession bypassed Broadway and instead took a more ‘open’ route on the way to the World’s Fair in Flushing Meadows:
They seemed to know a great deal about the layout of the city, and they asked many questions about it. I don’t know whether it is just my own disappointment about not being able to take them up Fifth Avenue and Broadway, but I gathered that they would have preferred that route. As we drove up the West Side Highway both the King and Queen asked several times how far we were from Broadway, and how far from Fifth Avenue. They were very much interested in Broadway.
At one point in Queens there was a section that did not seem to be covered well, and a large crowd of people surged downhill to fill it up. One of our motorcycle policemen swung over to keep them in bounds, and the King remarked, as if voicing his thoughts:
‘Don’t worry - the crowd always takes care of itself.’
Fiorello La Guardia // quoted in Voyage of State by G. Gordon Young (1939)

Ghostbusters lore time. The ghost classes are 1 to 7, class 1 being mist, flashing lights, disembodied voices, and floating objects. Class 2 are spectral hands, stereotypical bedsheets, and are otherwise vague and incomplete. Class 3 distinct human shape and personality but no established identity, more known for occupations in life, the apple doesn't fall far from the tree with ghosts. A chef will be a chef, and a taxi driver will be a taxi driver, and so on. Class 4 is when a 3's identity is established or well known. The mayor in the movie spoke with Fiorello La Guardia, who at that point had been dead for 40 years. Class 5 are non-human entities, being formed or spawned as the result of highly emotionally charged events or are byproducts of summoning rituals, Slimer is an example of this particular type. Class 6 are the spirits of lower lifeforms, i.e., animals merged into a larger, more threatening form, like fish schooling together. Class 7 are metaspectres, obscenely powerful, and typically, malevolent older cultures know them as demons or evil gods. Gozer from the movie is one of these.

Is now a bad time to mention I never watched a Ghostbusters?

By the early 1920s, if not earlier, some New Yorkers were skeptical that stringent regulations, model tenements, and rapid transit could solve the housing problem. Indeed, wrote the Housing Committee of the New York State Reconstruction Commission, a blue-ribbon body that had been appointed by Governor Alfred E. Smith after World War I, it had long been “economically impossible” to provide working people with decent homes at reasonable rents. If private enterprise was not up to the task, these New Yorkers concluded, “what else is there left to do except for the state or municipality to step in,” namely, to build good housing for working people and rent it to them at cost. In the vanguard of the campaign for what became known as “public housing” were the socialists, among them Judge Jacob Panken, who declared that it was the only way to solve the housing problem. Other New Yorkers came to the same conclusion. As Belle Moskowitz, an aide to Governor Smith, put it, “If [New York] cannot get housing in any other way, if it cannot get it through the speculative builder, if it cannot get it through cooperative associations or any other fashion, the city will have to build it.” Smith came out in favor of public housing too, as did Fiorello H. La Guardia, president of the New York City Board of Aldermen, and Henry H. Curran, borough president of Manhattan. Even Stewart Browne, a prominent real estate man (and something of a maverick in real estate circles), who opposed public housing in principle, saw no alternative. The Nation, a Progressive periodical, agreed. Pointing out that private enterprise offered no hope for relief, that capital “must have its interest,” and that landlords “will exact the utmost farthing,” it wrote in 1920 that only the government “can give homes to the people who need them and provide the homes that will be needed in the immediate future.”

"Only a well-fed, well-housed, well-schooled people can enjoy the blessings of liberty."
Happy Birthday, Fiorello La Guardia (1882-1947)
Fiorello LaGuardia chose not to wear his Jewish heritage on his sleeve. In fact, he allowed the public to identify him as Italian, not Jewish, even under the most tempting of political circumstances. When issues of Jewish interest came up in New York or national politics, however, the "Little Flower" was an ardent advocate for Jewish rights. As mayor of New York, he was one of Hitler’s most outspoken opponents.[JVL]

Did you know? In 1799, a prosperous merchant named Archibald Gracie built a country house overlooking a sleepy, scenic bend on the East River, five miles north of what was then New York City. Now, his home is one of the oldest surviving wood structures in Manhattan and the official residence of New York City’s Mayor. Financial hardship caused by the War of 1812 forced Gracie to sell his house in 1823. The property changed hands several times until, in 1896, the City of New York appropriated the estate, incorporating its eleven acres into the surrounding park that was renamed for Carl Schurz in 1910.  After years of use as a concession stand and as restrooms for the park, Gracie Mansion was restored and became the first home of the Museum of the City of New York. When the museum moved to its new building on Fifth Avenue, “power-brokering” Parks Commissioner Robert Moses convinced City authorities to designate the house as the official residence of the Mayor. In 1942, Fiorello H. La Guardia and his family moved into Gracie Mansion. #funfactfriday (at Gracie Mansion) https://www.instagram.com/p/CjJWljuP5zC/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
