We saw the river beating on the riverbank
For the way that it held every hard riverbed
It's cold, it's dark, it's not for people with uneasy hearts
But if you're with me on the other side
Strike up the band, we have survived

Fire Emblem's class system peaked so hard with Fates and Awakening it's not even funny.
In many of the past games, characters only had one starting class and whatever they promoted into (if they weren't already promoted). While these systems weren't very flexible, it did give units a distinct identity. Sacred Stones was neat though, because base classes had two branching paths they could take.
Meanwhile, Three Houses and Engage have very fluid class change options which let the characters be almost any class they want with enough investment. Even though this allows for a great degree of customization and personalization, it does minimize unit individuality. Not to mention, because you can just make everyone the best classes in the game, you're army doesn't end up being very diverse.
Fates and Awakening have the best of both worlds — enough flexibility to customize your army and try out characters in new classes, but restricted enough so that they still maintain their identity.

Cold Reception
I was thinking a lot about how Flora and Felicia are like....political hostages and the game barely touches up on that 😭 this dialogue from conquest is like. The best I've gotten
