Louise Bourgeois Show Notes

· Born: December 25, 1911, Paris, France

· Died: May 31, 2010, Manhattan, New York City, NY

· Follow up after our podcast with Nestor Zarragoitia, who talked about a secret door in a stair case piece by an artist named Louise Bourgeois - who is a very famous artist and an icon of feminist success in the arts

o Most people know her giant spider statues, which are usually public works, but tower above the viewer and the leg count isn’t always accurate. These giant spiders are one of the pieces of modern art Vanessa gets asked about regularly.

o Has a lot in common with Louise Nevelson, in that she was born early in the 19th century, was an immigrant to the USA, and didn’t gain fame until later in her life. this artist deals with sex and female sexuality, the squeamish and super young may wish to avert their ears. Sorry. WE promise all artists aren’t perverts, it’s just the vast majority.

o Born in Paris to a middle class family (Irony that last name is Bourgeois-means middle class roughly-what middle class is, because Vanessa isn’t sure it exists anymore.) who restored medieval and renaissance tapestries and made a good living at it.

· Like Pablo Picasso learning to paint and draw from his artist father, Bourgeois learns to draw and think about art spatially from helping her parents reconstruct these tapestries. She said she mostly drew arms and legs, and that this visual understanding of dismemberment came to influence her later art.

· Louise’s (I would keep calling her Bourgeois, but this is a clumsy word for the American mouth, just like we murder the heck out of Louise.) father was a huge influence on her work. She didn’t talk about this influence much later in life, and denied his role at first.

o Women with Daddy issues is kinda an art school cliché. So is women making art about their daddy issues. It can be done well, but isn’t always.

o Her father wanted a son, and named her Louise after his Louis because of his disappointment at having a daughter. Though he later had a son, Louise actually became his favorite child.

· He didn’t always get along with her father and had a violent temper, which shades some of the art work. He also either hired his mistress as Louise’s tutor, or started sleeping with Louise’s tutor...I’m not real sure on this… but either way his mistress was living with the family and he had no qualms about the fact he was done sleeping with Louise’s mother. This fragrant disregard for social norms upset Louise a great deal and alienated her at a young age from their father. It also began her mental exploration of the roles men and women serve as sexual beings and how other’s sex can affect our idea of intercourse.

· she also cites a fantasy that children have of dismembering their parents, particularly the one of the opposite sex. (Do people? Really? Idk. I didn’t as a kid.) This does play into Jung’s idea that to mature as an adult you have to (Symbolically) kill your parents.

o her father and her do eventually develop a healthy relationship where they see each other more as equals and he ends up living with her in America. This in Vanessa’s mind shows how the role your parents play matures as you do. There is this point in your life where you see a living parent as a human being and gain enough life experience to sympathize with their foibles and mistakes, even if you struggle with acceptance. This may be some of the playing Louise does in her artworks, as it is easier to look back on these times with criticism and understanding.

o Another thing to think of is the role of the father, especially to someone born in 1910, as the first person to define a woman’s sexuality and demonstrate the power of the patriarchy on that sexuality. THis is another time, where the man was seen as the head of the family and his indiscretions normally ignored, whereas female sexuality was a closeted thing that was even widely believed to be non-existent (See the Stuff You Missed In History Class on Boston Marriages). So as the first male who exists in your life, the father at this time takes a rigid role in how the female defines herself and if she is allowed to exist in the public as a person with her own autonomy. For example, he denounces and refuses to pay for her education at the Sorbonne because he hates “modern art” in an attempt to force her into a more acceptable female role. While parents still do this, the issue would have probably been less pronounced if she were male (She did continue at the Sorbonne, working as a translator for English speaking students in exchange for paid tuition), and he did help fund her opening a print business next to his after she graduated.

· In 1938, while working in a print shop, an art historian named Robert Goldwater walked in, and according to Louise "In between talks about surrealism and the latest trends, we got married."

· Louise sales with Goldwater to the USA shortly after her marriage and towards the end of her life felt she needed to be defined as an American artist, because she lives the majority of her life as an American and her work matures and is influenced by the free American spirit.

· Like Nevelson, Louise doesn’t thrive during the 40’s or 50’s. Her work has far more to do with Surrealism than the super manly Ab Ex movement that goes on in NYC under Peggy Guggenheim and Clement Greenburg’s curatorial gaze. She shows during this time, but is not taken as seriously as this infamous “boys club”, and even her obit has to include a paragraph of unnecessary gushing about how prominent these famous dudes were...which annoyed Vanessa, if only because they obscured more than they helped and that only needs to be pointed out so much.

· Louise’s husband does pass in the 1970’s while in his 60’s, and was a prominent art historian, but she remained both wistful and critical of him. THey had a good marriage, but she found his academics dull.

· In the 1940’s and 1950’s she adopts one child and gives birth to two. This results in a sculpture series in Balsa wood, which could be constructed without waking up sleeping children. This also stops her career for a decade, and is a common theme with many female artists...especially from this time...the financial, social issues, and time needed to raise children is so demanding it is hard to get a show, let alone have free time to spend as you like… so the story of a lot of women artists picks up after they either abandon their children, or reach a stable point in their lives where they no longer have to put a family before their own sanity or well being. Vanessa says this with a good deal of criticism, because even today a lot of men are allowed their “Dreams” while women struggle in the background, forced into a role of nurturing even if they don’t want it. Vanessa cant’ think of an instance where a male creative “Stopped making art to raise a family.” Please send her exceptions.

From Bourgeois’ Obit: Then, in 1966, the critic Lucy Lippard, who, like so many New Yorkers, had known her effectively as Goldwater's appendage, saw her work, was astonished by it, and included it in a show she was organizing called Eccentric Abstraction, at the Fischbach Gallery.

Toronto, Labour Day 2017

Having been to Canada 3 times already (2003 fishing trip in Nestor Falls, Vancouver, and Niagara Falls), for many years I’ve also wanted to visit Toronto. It doesn’t take much convincing to talk the wife into getting out her passport, so we booked a flight out of Milwaukee and a hotel downtown for the Labor Day weekend. Or in Canada, Labour Day.

When flying in, it was amazing seeing the landscape go from miles and miles of farmland to urban sprawl as if a line were drawn on a map. The airport was far from downtown, so we had to take public transit to our hotel. It wasn’t ideal, as the subway was a little busy and transferring trains was not fun when lugging around a 50 lbs suitcase up and down non-working escalators, but it was cheap.

Downtown Toronto was quite beautiful. There are many similarities to New York City, but more in a way that Toronto is trying too hard to be like NYC.

Much like when I found that it’s a misconception that New Yorkers are very rude, I found it’s also misconception that all Canadians are polite. Aside from the service workers in the restaurants and stores, whom were all awesome, the majority of people on the street were borderline rude to us. Not stepping out of the way when there’s little room on the sidewalk, not holding doors for us when following them into a building, and they’re not apologetic at all when they bump into you. I assumed this is just the way people are in the city, however the people in downtown Vancouver were much more polite.

I talked to a few sports fans as I was donning my Badgers and Brewers hats all weekend. I was surprised at how much they love their Blue Jays. This is something I tend to notice when we travel: how many sports fans I see and which teams they back. I saw far more Blue Jays hats downtown than I usually see of any one team’s apparel in any other city. It was not yet hockey season, so I will excuse the lack of NHL apparel seen, however it still surprised me as from what I understand the Maple Leafs’ fan base is pretty rabid. One person told me that Toronto really wants their own NFL team. I asked about the CFL, and he said it’s fun but even Canadians consider it the minor leagues of the NFL. The last night we were there, a CFL game was on every TV in the bar (Toronto vs Hamilton), but it didn’t really seem like a lot of people at the bar were into the game; no one cheered when Toronto scored [side note: Toronto won the Grey Cup this season]. We did want to go to a baseball game when we were there but the Jays were out of town.

Our first eating/drinking destination was a place downtown called the Beerbistro. Prices were a little high, but they had a fairly impressive beer menu. I started with a very good hefeweizen by Side Launch Brewing, several other random Canadian beers (including a rye called “Beer Snob”), and a La Trappe Quad from the Netherlands.

That night we went to the lakefront and ate at Amsterdam Brewing Company. I sampled 8 of their beers while enjoying the spiciest Thai green curry I’ve had in my life. Interestingly, one of their beers was called “Spotted Cow.” It’s a Belgian wit, and it was decent. I really enjoyed the “Downtown Brown” and surprisingly the “Boneshaker” 80 IBU IPA. I bought a few more to go and really liked their raspberry beer.

The next day we had lunch downtown at 3 Brasseurs (3 Brewers) and I did some early sampling. They had a new “Milkshake IPA” and it was fine. I wasn’t overly impressed with many of their beers; I thought their brown and wit beers were decent, the amber wasn’t that good, but the “Bear Street Stout” was quite good. We came back to this place a few more times because the food and service were excellent and I enjoyed that stout every time.

Later we went to Goose Island Brewing. I expected to see most of GI’s regulars on tap and was surprised to see they had so much more. Also the brewery is right next to a restaurant called Bier Markt and they have an extensive tap/bottle list. We were allowed to order food and beer from there when sitting in the Goose Island beer garden. The wife decided to try “Prodromus” by Omnipollo, a deep fried graham cracker chocolate chunk caramel bar stout. She thought it was too boozy (she was right, it is 11.1%) but I loved it. I tried a “Steam Whistle Pilsner” which is the only beer Steam Whistle Brewing makes. I’m not much of a fan of pilsners, but this one was good. My favorite Goose Island beer was the “Cult Classic,” a dunkel.

For dinner, I was able to talk the wife into going to Mascot Brewery because I was determined to go to a rooftop bar. But after climbing all of the stairs, we found out they wouldn’t serve me a flight of samples up there, so we had to come back down to the restaurant. I tried 3 of their beers as well as a number of guest taps. All were good. My favorites were Mascot’s “Peach Sour,” and Nickel Brook’s “Inquiry Brett Farmhouse Saison.” Nickel Brook also had an interesting sour stout. In all I sampled 27 different beers Saturday.

On Sunday, we got on a train to Casa Loma, a beautiful castle north of downtown. When we arrived, it was closed due to a power outage. We were pretty disappointed, so I thought we’d head back down to the waterfront. On our way there, my Samsung Galaxy S6 went into a reboot loop. I spent a long time trying to get it to recover, but in the end it was dead. Now VERY disappointed, we stopped at a sports bar called Shoeless Joe’s and I had a few “Rickard’s Red” Irish ales made by Molson. I didn’t expect it to taste good considering it’s a Canadian domestic (probably on par with Samuel Adams) but I liked it; maybe it was just that I was in such a bad mood that any beer would taste good.

We took up the advice of another couple we talked to earlier and went to the Distillery Historic District. This didn’t cheer me up as it was more of an arts & crafts market than anything else. We stopped at Mill Street Brewery to sample a few beers. The “Tankhouse Ale” and “Belgian Wit” were both good, but the two others I tried were awful. A screaming kid in the beer garden hastened our departure. We went back to the Bier Markt to try to cheer me up. I had another Prodromus but I was still too annoyed to enjoy myself. Also the service there was very slow so we decided to go somewhere else for dinner. Back to the Beerbistro! A chocolate porter by Collective Arts called “Stranger Than Fiction” raised my spirits. “Captivator Doppelbock” by Tree Brewing Co also pleased me.

On Labor Day, after lunch at 3 Brasseurs, we went back to Casa Loma and were granted entrance. We climbed one of the towers, toured the castle (it is set up like a Canadian military museum), and walked the 800ft tunnel to the castle’s stables. Many movies were filmed in the castle, including X-Men, Strange Brew, and Chicago.

That night, being the last night in Toronto, we treated ourselves to a nice dinner at The Keg Steakhouse & Bar. For a place called “The Keg” I was pretty disappointed with their beer menu. I tried an IPA, then just had a few Rickard’s Reds. The food was amazing.

Tuesday I was finally able to do what I’ve always wanted to do in Toronto: visit the Hockey Hall of Fame. It’s mostly game-used hockey gear from NHL and Olympic teams, and then the Great Hall where every NHL trophy resides, including an exact replica of the Stanley Cup.

Although my hopes may have been too high for the city leading me to a slight sense of disappointment, not to mention having to buy a new phone upon arriving back in Wisconsin, I was impressed with most of the food we were able to enjoy, and I was able to sample around 50 new beers.

ABC reveals their upcoming 2017 – 2018 primetime lineup, and we’ve got the details, including the announcement about Scandal‘s last season.

Upfronts 2017 continues! Yesterday, NBC and FOX announced their lineup from the upcoming season, and earlier today ABC held their showcase to do the same.

Channing Dungey, president of ABC Entertainment, unveiled the network’s new lineup this afternoon at Lincoln Center’s David Geffen Hall in NYC, and there are some shake-ups.

What stands out most to me is the changes to Once Upon a Time. After news that the majority of the series’ regular cast is departing, ABC has still renewed the show for Season 7. There are lots of questions about the nature of the reset for the new season. Incidentally, I do think the Season 6 finale does a surprisingly good job of setting the stakes and creating some buy-in from long time Oncers. In any event, Once Upon a Time will be moved from Sunday evenings to Friday at 8:00pm ET|PT. This time spot is notorious for being a death sentence to TV shows, but there’s still reason to be optimistic (more on that later…).

Also, some changes are on the horizon for Shondaland and TGiT too. The Catch has been cancelled, and while Scandal has gotten a full season order, Shonda Rhimes (Scandal’s creator and executive producer) and ABC confirm that Season 7 will be the show’s last. According to Ms. Rhimes:

“Deciding how to end a show is easy. Deciding when to finish is quite simple when the end date is years away. But actually going through with it? Actually standing up to say: ‘This is it?’ Not so much. So, next year we are going all out. Leaving nothing on the table. Creating this world in celebration. We are going to handle the end the way we like to handle the important things in our ‘Scandal’ family: all together, white hats on, gladiators running full speed over a cliff.”

Gladiators right up until the end!

In addition to their returning series, ABC is also introducing one comedy (The Mayor) and four new dramas (The Good Doctor, The Gospel of Kevin, Marvel’s Inhumans, Ten Days In the Valley) in the Fall.

We can expect ABC to bring us TWO revivals, Roseanne, plus a revamped American Idol (moving to a new network after being cancelled at FOX in 2015). Rounding out the announcement is that we can expect two Live Musical Special Events The Wonderful World of Disney: The Little Mermaid Live! (debuting Tuesday, October 3) and Rolling Stone 50.

MARVEL’S INHUMANS

“Marvel’s Inhumans” explores the never-before-told epic adventure of the royal family including Black Bolt, the enigmatic, commanding King of the Inhumans, with a voice so powerful that the slightest whisper can destroy a city. After the Royal Family of Inhumans is splintered by a military coup, they barely escape to Hawaii where their surprising interactions with the lush world and humanity around them may prove to not only save them, but Earth itself. The legendary comic book series will be brought to life in a way that has never been done before, as a version of the first two episodes will be shown globally in IMAX theaters for a two-week period beginning September 1, 2017. ABC will then air the entirety of the series on the network, with additional exclusive content that can only been seen on ABC. “Marvel’s Inhumans” stars Anson Mount as Black Bolt, Iwan Rheon as Maximus, Serinda Swan as Medusa, Eme Ikwuakor as Gorgon, Isabelle Cornish as Crystal, Ken Leung as Karnak, Ellen Woglom as an undisclosed character, Sonya Balmores as Auran and Mike Moh as Triton. The series is executive produced by Scott Buck, along with Marvel’s Jeph Loeb and Jim Chory with Buck serving as showrunner. Roel Reiné will direct the first two episodes. This series is a Marvel and IMAX project and is co-produced by Marvel Television and ABC Studios.

THE MAYOR

Young rapper Courtney Rose (Brandon Micheal Hall) needs his big break. For years he’s toiled away in a small inner-city apartment, making music in his junk-filled bedroom closet. Tired of waiting for opportunity, Courtney cooks up the publicity stunt of the century – running for mayor of his hometown in California to generate buzz for his music career. Unfortunately for Courtney, his master plan goes wildly awry, ending in the most terrifying of outcomes: an election victory. With the help of his mother (Yvette Nicole Brown, “Community”) and friends, including Valentina (“Glee’s” Lea Michele), Courtney will have to overcome his hubris if he wants to transform the struggling city he loves. The series stars Brandon Micheal Hall as Courtney Rose, Lea Michele as Valentina, Bernard David Jones as Jermaine Hardaway, Marcel Spears as TK and Yvette Nicole Brown as Dina. From executive producer Daveed Diggs (Tony winner for Broadway’s “Hamilton”), writer/executive producer Jeremy Bronson (“Speechless,” “The Mindy Project,” “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon”) and executive producer Jamie Tarses (“Happy Endings”), the series is from ABC Studios. The pilot is directed by executive producer James Griffiths (“black-ish”).

ROSEANNE

Iconic comedy series “Roseanne” will return to The ABC Television Network, Channing Dungey, president, ABC Entertainment, announced today. The eight-episode reboot, featuring the original cast – Roseanne Barr (Roseanne), John Goodman (Dan), Sara Gilbert (Darlene), Laurie Metcalf (Jackie), Michael Fishman (D.J.) and Lecy Goranson (Becky) – will air in 2018. Sarah Chalke, who played the character Becky in later seasons, will also appear in another role. Roseanne Barr will executive produce, along with Sara Gilbert, Tom Werner, Bruce Helford, Whitney Cummings and Tony Hernandez. The series is from Carsey-Werner Television.

ROLLING STONE 50

For half a century, Rolling Stone has remained an iconic and important voice in American music, culture and politics. Now, the people who have told their stories through the Rolling Stone lens are coming together to reflect on the last 50 years. “Rolling Stone 50” will pay homage to the brand’s influence and impact through a curated journey of its most seminal moments. Live from New York City, the three-hour special television event, set to debut Wednesday, February 7, 2018, will showcase live performances, short films, iconic on-stage moments, never-before-seen musical pairings, and celebrities that have shaped pop culture, music and politics. The special is a production of Done + Dusted and Wenner Media. Jann Wenner and Gus Wenner of Wenner Media and Ian Stewart, David Jammy and Katy Mullan of Done + Dusted serve as executive producers.

SPLITTING UP TOGETHER

Based on the Danish series, “Splitting Up Together” is the story of a couple (Jenna Fischer, “The Office,” Oliver Hudson, “Scream Queens”) whose marriage is reignited by their divorce. Emily Kapnek (“Suburgatory”) writes and serves as executive producer of this new comedy, along with Ellen DeGeneres. The series stars Jenna Fischer as Lena, Oliver Hudson as Martin, Bobby Lee as Arthur, Diane Farr as Maya, Lindsay Price as Camille, Olivia Keville as Mae, Van Crosby as Mason and Sander Thomas as Milo. Jeff Kleeman, Mette Heeno, Mie Andreasen and Hella Joof are also executive producers of “Splitting Up Together,” which is based on the original series created by Heeno. It is produced by A Very Good Production and Piece of Pie Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television. Dean Holland directed the pilot.

TEN DAYS IN THE VALLEY

“Ten Days in the Valley” stars Kyra Sedgwick as Jane Sadler, an overworked television producer and single mother in the middle of a separation whose life is turned upside down when her young daughter goes missing in the middle of the night. THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF DISNEY: THE LITTLE MERMAID LIVE!

In a two-hour special event, ABC will take the iconic “The Little Mermaid” animated feature film and intertwine it with show stopping LIVE musical performances via cutting-edge technology for an explosive evening honoring one of Walt Disney’s most celebrated classics. Fans of “The Little Mermaid” and Alan Menken and Howard Ashman’s Oscar-winning songs will enjoy this never-before-seen live action/animation hybrid television experience featuring a soon-to-be announced roster of some of their favorite celebrity artists, whose performances will weave seamlessly throughout the original animated film. “The Wonderful World of Disney: The Little Mermaid Live!” is set to premiere on Tuesday, October 3.
