On the road: Jordan

After sending off LD and DC to officially start their honeymoon (without 3 extra third wheels tagging along), TT, MA and I left Dubai for an 8 day tour around Jordan. This was really the anchor destination of our entire Middle East trip and something that we had been planning for over a year. There was quite a bit we wanted to see in Jordan (Petra, Wadi Rum, the Dead Sea) so we used a private tour company (Engaging Cultures) to arrange everything. They organized a super efficient itinerary for us so we managed to cover a ton of territory, from Amman to Aqaba, in a short amount of time. We loved Jordan: beautiful scenery, friendly people and never tired of seeing wild camels wandering around everywhere, even when they were blocking traffic.

Where I stayed: we moved around quite a bit in Jordan as we were covering a lot of territory: the Al Qasr Metropole Hotel in Amman; Feynan Eco Lodge (Dana Nature Reserve) a very cool eco lodge in the desert that runs off of solar power (and candlelight and night) - food was purely vegetarian but delicious; private Bedouin camps in Petra and Wadi Rum; Marriott Petra (a welcome luxury after a few days of roughing it with a pool and hairdryers!); the Movenpick Tala Bay (Red Sea) - a nice change from the desert and right on the Red Sea but also super jammed with families; the Kempinski Hotel Ishtar Dead Sea (very nice with private beach access to the Dead Sea/mudding facilities but unfortunately service was horrible and the hotel also smelled badly of sewage in some parts). We had some pretty amazing views for star gazing at the Feynan Eco Lodge and the Wadi Rum camp in the middle of the desert and I’ve never seen anything quite like it elsewhere in the world. Our Petra hotel also had incredible views overlooking Petra - amazing to be able to see how far we had camel-ed/hiked/walked over the 2 days we were there.

What I ate/drank: our favourite meal was at Sufra Amman (Rainbow Street, Amman) with pickled eggplant and walnut hummus; knafe cheese desert from a street market in Amman, the most delicious freshly baked bread at the Feynan lodge; plenty of tea - a very sweet black tea (especially nice in the desert overlooking the sunset); plenty of bean stews and chicken with rice while camping in the desert, a solid falafel sandwich at the Amman airport before leaving.

What I did: Petra covers quite a large area so we spent a few days there. We entered one day through the front entrance walking the Siq to in order to come to the Treasury head on and the next day we came in through the back entrance of the park via a long camel ride and long but beautiful hike in order to see the Monastery); a sunset hike around the Dana Nature reserve; plenty of star gazing - the best I've seen anywhere in the world; explored the Wadi Rum desert where we hiked up giant sand dunes and into some of the canyons of the rock formations and camped overnight; a home visit with a local family in Wadi Rum where we met seven children aged 5-18 and made them laugh with snapchat filters and pictures of our pets back home (in return they showed us their dance moves, taught us clapping games and showed us all of their goats); some unintentional canyoning at Wadi Mujib - a beautiful walk through the canyons but you do need to cross some areas through water and there much more water than expected (like up to our chins!) so definitely recommend water shoes here; the roman amphitheatre and citadel in Amman; kayaking at the Red Sea (where we accidentally kayaked into an area with hundreds of jellyfish and then backed out verrrry slooowly); floated in the Dead Sea (so salty you just bob along the surface with no effort) and mudded afterwards (great for detoxing, bad for bathing suits so pack an old one). While at the Red Sea we were able to enjoy views of Israel/Palestine and Egypt right across the small sea and also learned that the Saudi border was just 15km away.

What I read while there: ‘Swing Time’ by Zadie Smith. TT also read ‘Married to a Bedouin’ by Marguerite van Geldermalsen and we even met the author in Petra! She said it was kind of a slow read but very good background for Jordan.

Tips:

Between the salt and the mud the dead sea will destroy your bathing suit so pack one you can throw out after

Camping in the desert can get cold at night so pack some warm stuff (thermals, socks, maybe a fleece)

Hiking boots would be best for the desert & more advanced hikes around Petra; water shoes would come in handy for Wadi Mujib and the rocky floor at the Red Sea

Even the major hotel chains in tourist hubs may not be as western as you expect so opt for more conservative pool attire

Bedouins camps may or may not have showers, towels, etc - recommend packing lots of wet wipes, hand sanitiser, dry shampoo and a small towel if you have space

Bedouin-style eyeliner takes days and days to come off :)

Bedouin-style headscarfs not only make a great souvenir but are a really good way to keep your head & neck cool in the desert. We quickly ditched out baseball caps for these early on.
