House of Okawa, 1925

This is an old build of mine (well, a few months old), but I spent a lot of time on it and thought I’d share it. It’s a light CC build. 

This is a recreation of a house currently located in the Edo-Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum, an outdoor architectural museum in Tokyo where various buildings of historical interest are preserved in a large park. You pay admission to see a museum and all of the homes, which you can walk inside and explore (to a limited extent). I went there a couple of years ago during a trip to Japan and enjoyed it so much. This house was the first we went into, a sunny yellow suburban home from the 1920s, built soon after much of Tokyo was burned in the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923. It’s of a particular style I like from the Meiji and Taisho eras which combines traditional Japanese architecture with Western elements. I thought “I want to live here” as soon as I walked through the door. But since I can’t, building it in the sims is the next best thing!

The build is only lightly furnished. I tried to keep things similar to how the home is staged in the museum. I wasn’t able to recreate some of the elements, like the built in window seat or distinctive circular pergola in the front. The bedroom should really be a tatami room as well, but I carpeted it for more usability within the game. I also removed a small closet near the maid’s room and a door for the private entrance of the maid (near the bathroom) as there were simply too many doors and not enough room for them in such a small house. 

According to my notes (picked up when touring the house) it was built by Okawa Sakae, a civil engineer for the Japanese Government Railways. The house was designed by the architect Mii Michio, a chief engineer at the Shinichiro Okada Architectural Office. The original architectural diagrams were saved at the house itself, allowing it to be restored to nearly its original design during reconstruction. (These are actually sitting on the dining room table if you tour the home). Apparently, five people lived in the house, but there is only one bedroom proper. It would be easy enough to convert the study into a second bedroom if needed, and I made enough room to place a single bed in the “maid’s room/tatami room.”

On the Edo-Tokyo website you can actually do a virtual tour of the real home and see pictures of it. This was very helpful to me in making this build. 

Required packs: Cats & Dogs, Snowy Escape, and Discover University (I only used one wall and some furniture from DU, so you might manage without it). It says it needs Dine Out but I didn’t use anything from Dine Out so I think it’s just an error.
